Passenger Evacuated From Disney Cruise Ship by the US Coast Guard

Unfortunately for one family aboard Disney Magic, what was to have been a magical cruise vacation has been cut short due to an emergency evacuation airlift.

On Monday, March 3, 2025, a 9-year-old female passenger required an airlift from the ship while the vessel was on the first full day of its current sailing.

The US Coast Guard (USCG) helicopter team at Air Station Houston responded to the medevac request, safely airlifting the young girl and transporting her to the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital in Galveston.

“Air Station Houston medevaced a 9-year-old girl from a cruise ship 170 miles offshore Galveston, Monday. The helicopter crew arrived on scene and transported her to the UTMB,” the USCG Heartland team posted on X. “The patient was last reported to be in stable condition.”

At the time of the medevac, Disney Magic reversed course and headed back toward Galveston to meet the USCG team. This ensures a faster operation and can help get the patient to essential care as quickly as possible.

Because the ship was enjoying a day at sea on Monday, there is no significant impact on the 4-night Western Caribbean itinerary. Disney Magic was still able to visit Progreso, Mexico as planned on Tuesday, March 4, and will return to Galveston on Thursday, March 6 following another fun day at sea.

No further details of the girl’s medical condition have been confirmed, as is customary to protect the patient’s privacy as well as the privacy of her family, friends, and traveling companions.

While cruise ship medical centers are well-equipped, evacuations can be essential when patients may need more critical or specialized care than the ship can provide.

It can undoubtedly be scary for a young cruiser to experience such a devastating event, but the USCG teams are highly trained to perform such operations as smoothly and calmly as possible. This can help ease patients’ anxiety in very unfamiliar and potentially frightening situations.

US Coast Guard Cruise Ship Evacs

Whenever called, the USCG stands ready to medevac guests, no matter how challenging the conditions.

In January 2025, Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans shared video footage of an airlift from Carnival Valor, showing very clearly just how precise the work must be to safely carry out the operation.

Rough weather, long distances, poor visibility and other challenges do not deter the USCG teams, who take all necessary steps to safeguard the lives of those they assist, and they do not give up.

For example, in April 2023, a USCG team had to abort their first rescue attempt for Carnival Dream, due to a severe squall that blew through the region as the operation was underway. A second crew was able to complete that evacuation once the weather cleared.

USCG teams do not rest, either, and are always on call even when multiple evacuations may be necessary within a short time period.

In May 2023, Coast Guard Air Station San Diego managed three separate rescues of four total guests off the coast of southern California. Those operations involved a 47-year-old female from Carnival Panorama, a 74-year-old female and a 77-year-old female simultaneously from Majestic Princess, and an 84-year-old female from Carnival Spirit – all within a 24-hour period.

In April 2024, Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen facilitated a delicate rescue of a pregnant 35-year-old woman from Disney Fantasy who was experiencing health complications. That long-distance operation was successfully completed, which was 180 miles northwest of Puerto Rico.

Most recently, a 72-year-old man was evacuated from Holland America Line’s Koningsdam south of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Cruise Hive and all cruisers are grateful for the dedication and expertise of the United States Coast Guard and the hard-working teams who take every necessary step to offer assistance whenever needed.

MSC Cruises Names Drew Barrymore as Godmother for Massive Mega-Ship

Ever the free spirit with a “go-with-the-flow” attitude, beloved actress, talk show host, and mom Drew Barrymore is set to embrace the waves in a new role: Godmother of MSC World America.

The highly anticipated US flagship of MSC Cruises, MSC World America, couldn’t have chosen a more positive role model to bestow good luck and protection over the 6,762-passenger vessel, set to debut April 9, 2025, in Miami.

Known for her infectious smile and boundless energy, Barrymore has captivated audiences from her breakout role at age 7 in “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” to her girl-next-door presence as the host of “The Drew Barrymore Show.”

The announcement comes on the heels of Barrymore’s surprise Super Bowl ad promoting MSC Cruises alongside fellow Hollywood legend Orlando Bloom in February 2025.

“I absolutely love to travel – it fuels my soul,” said Barrymore. “Being part of something that helps people set off on incredible adventures is just amazing.”

Barrymore gushed that when asked to be the ceremonial godmother, she immediately said yes.

“Drew is the perfect godmother for MSC World America, and we are thrilled to continue to partner with her for this campaign,” said Suzanne Salas, MSC Cruises USA’s executive vice president of marketing, ecommerce and sales.

“She embodies our brand with her exquisite style and grace, and her passion for the comfort and adventure we find through travel,” Salas continued.

As godmother, Barrymore will be on hand at MSC World America’s christening, cutting the ribbon and breaking a bottle of champagne alongside Bloom at the event taking place at the cruise line’s new MSC Cruise Terminal.

“To be able to name MSC World America and send the ship off with well wishes and good luck is such an honor,” said Barrymore“There’s something so magical about cruises; they let you discover the world in this really fun, unexpected way.”

Ready to Make an Entrance

The 216,638-gross-ton MSC World America is gearing up for her big debut by wrapping up final stages of outfitting at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in France, where she has been under construction since 2022.

Passing her final set of sea trials with flying colors on February 19, 2025, the shipyard is preparing to hand over the vessel to MSC Cruises on March 27, 2025.

When it does, the World-class MSC World America will be the largest in the MSC Cruises’ fleet of 24 ships. (Two additional World-class vessels will join in 2026 and 2027.)

Specifically designed for the North American market, MSC World America will feature seven distinct districts, 19 dining venues and 18 bars and lounges, multiple swimming pools, and new thrill rides, including the Cliffhanger swing ride.

The vessel will also be the first to be christened at MSC Cruises’ new cruise terminal, which opened in February 2025

The largest cruise terminal in the world at nearly 500,000 square feet, the MSC Cruises Terminal is capable of welcoming 36,000 passengers per day on three simultaneous ship arrivals.

Following the christening, MSC World America will embark on a maiden voyage to the Eastern Caribbean, making calls in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and MSC Ocean Cay Marine Reserve.

The private destination of the cruise line will also host its own ribbon cutting during the vessel’s arrival to debut its new Marine Conservation Center. Here, guests can learn about the research and conservation work supporting coral reefs.

MSC World America will alternate sailings between the Eastern and Western Caribbean from PortMiami, with the latter visiting ports in Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico, Honduras, and Ocean Cay.

Major Canadian Port Expects Slight Drop in Cruise Traffic

0

The initial post-pandemic years brought record-breaking cruise arrivals to Vancouver, the British Columbia port that plays a vital role in the Alaska cruise market, but officials say cruise tourism will slightly cool in 2025.

The port’s season officially began on March 5, 2025 and continues into October. Predictions are for 1.2 million cruise passengers to pass through the port’s terminal, Canada Place, onboard 301 cruise ships.

In 2024, port data shows that 1.32 million cruise guests transited Canada Place on 327 cruise ships. That was a record-breaking year following another boom year, 2023, when the port welcomed 1.25 million passengers.

Even in light of the lower estimates for 2025, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority remains upbeat about the coming season.

We are thrilled to see Vancouver’s cruise sector continue to thrive—attracting visitors from across the globe for a once-in-a-lifetime Alaska experience while injecting more than $1 billion into our local economy, said Captain Shri Madiwal, Vice President of Operations and Supply Chain at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority

I want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in Vancouver cruise—to so successfully service upwards of 300 ship calls and 1 million passenger visits every year is a huge feat and one that supports jobs and businesses across the region, added Madiwal.

The first ship to call at Canada Place, on March 5, 2025, is Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wonder. The 2,700-guest ship visited Vancouver at the end of a Hawaii cruise and departed the same day for San Diego.

The ship will sail California coastal cruises until early May, when she will return to Vancouver and homeport there through mid-September 2025, sailing 5- to 9-night Alaska itineraries.

The Alaska season is a major economic driver for the Vancouver region, supporting some 17,000 jobs and representing an influx of about $3 million each time a cruise ship calls at the port.

Vancouver continues to attract more cruise ships each year. In 2025, eight ships will make their maiden calls to Canada Place — Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Jade; Silversea Cruises’ Silver Moon; Oceania Cruises’ Riviera; Seabourn’s Seabourn Quest; Viking’s Viking Venus; Villa Vie Residences’ Villa Vie Odyssey; and Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas.

Almost all of the major cruise lines, from premium to luxury to expedition, will visit Vancouver in 2025, including Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line, Explora Journeys, Princess Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, Crystal, Ponant, and Hurtigruten Expeditions.

Vancouver is a significant jumping off point for Inside Passage itineraries that typically visit the popular southeastern Alaska ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway.

We want every passenger embarking or disembarking in Vancouver to have a memorable experience while they’re in our city, said Royce Chwin, President and CEO of Destination Vancouver

Most Cruise Ships Use Shore Power Offered by Vancouver

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is committed to reducing pollution through the use of shore power technologies.

In fact, the port is a partner in the Pacific Northwest to Alaska Cruise-led Green Corridor project, which is working toward the goal of having four cruise ships powered using green methanol on the Alaska to British Columbia/Washington State route by 2032.

The Vancouver port already offers shore power connections to cruise ships via its hydro-powered electric grid. According to port data, 80% of cruise ships that called in 2024 were equipped to hook into shore power.

Since installing the technology in 2009, Vancouver has helped to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 45,000 tons. Using a shoreside electrical source enables cruise ships to turn off their engines and use local power to keep hotel operations running.

Carnival Will Not Provide Desired Luggage Perk for Loyal Guests

The more cruisers set sail, the more they might be packing – casual wear, beach attire, formal clothes, outfits for theme nights, a small fan, perhaps a CPAP machine, medications, cruising ducks, gifts for crew members, and more.

If larger luggage is needed, where should it be stored during the cruise?

One loyal Carnival guest believes there should be dedicated storage space for their luggage, rather than having the pieces in their stateroom. Of course, their loyalty is the biggest factor they consider for who ought to get such a benefit.

They reached out to Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, in response to a recent discussion about luggage, insisting that a lack of storage space creates a stressful and less-than-enjoyable cruise.

“Not every and all suitcases fit under the bed. Your response [to luggage storage] is misleading at best. Why is there no suitcase storage for diamond pax?” the guest asked.

“DH and I mostly take Journey cruises now. We always take three 26″ hard-sided suitcases and they do not fit under the bed. We have some larger and medium cases, the carry on fits into the medium which fits into the larger… like Russian stacking dolls. None of this would be stressful if you offered storage for your most frequent cruisers.”

Well… I’ve traveled with much larger than 26″ suitcases on Carnival cruises, and have never personally had difficulty fitting every piece of luggage under the bed. Larger cases, smaller cases, backpacks, duffle bags, that one time I bothered to bring an office bag – it all fit.

It may be true, however, that some ships have lower bed frames and a hard-sided suitcase might not fit as easily, particularly under the “long” sides of the bed. In that case, the foot of the bed usually has a much higher frame, and suitcases can slide under that way.

Heald responded to the guest’s concerns, acknowledging their loyalty but also explaining the storage situation.

“I do apologize, I thought all normal-sized suitcases fit under our cabin beds and if I am wrong I am really sorry,” he said. “We do not have storage areas for suitcases, regardless of how many times you may have cruised (thank you for being Diamond guests) and so we do ask guests to store their own luggage.”

The idea that such a perk ought to be available for Diamond guests – the highest level of Carnival Cruise Line’s Very Important Fun Person (VIFP) loyalty program – smacks of entitlement. Because of that, the idea does not sit well with other commenters.

Different guests do point out that if the original poster is in fact a Diamond-level traveler who takes mostly Carnival Journeys cruises, they would be very familiar with the fact that those longer sailings have the highest number of loyal guests of any cruise.

Because of the difficulty of offering every planned perk when individual cruises have many upper-level loyalty guests, Carnival often has to remove select perks from those sailings.

If luggage storage was indeed a perk being offered – which it is not and will not be – it would undoubtedly be impossible to maintain that perk for Carnival Journeys sailings.

It has also been suggested that such Diamond guests take advantage of another perk that is always offered to them in order to pack less.

Diamond-level VIFP travelers get unlimited wash and fold laundry service for free. Using that service could mean much less packing, and therefore no need to bring such large pieces of luggage.

This is not the first time Heald has addressed the idea of luggage storage. In October 2024, another guest aired similar concerns, with the same response.

“We do not have the storage space for this, we simply cannot take your suitcases,” he said.

Where Should Larger Luggage Be Stored?

Where, then, should Carnival guests store their suitcases once they’re onboard and unpacked? If indeed the cases will not fit under the bed, there are other options.

Many travelers simply put the empty suitcase in the closet, where it is easily accessible but not taking up valuable floorspace or other space in the stateroom. An out-of-the-way corner toward the back of the stateroom is another spot a suitcase could be left without being bothersome.

Particularly on shorter cruises, some guests simply choose to live out of their suitcases. Putting the case on the sofa, chair, or vanity desk in the stateroom means it is convenient for use and doesn’t need to be unpacked at all.

In some staterooms, it is possible to ask the steward to leave a pull-down bunk in the lowered position, and extra luggage or large pieces could be stored there for the duration of the cruise.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival Sailings Derailed by Tropical Cyclone

With Tropical Cyclone Alfred shaping up to be one of Australia’s most severe storms in decades, it’s much safer (and more comfortable for all onboard) to stay out at sea and out of its path.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line have now joined brands like P&O Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Cunard Line to alter itineraries to keep their ships – and the passengers onboard – far away from the inclement weather.

Currently, Quantum of the Seas is in the middle of a 7-day South Pacific sailing that embarked on February 28, 2025.

But, due to poor weather conditions caused by Tropical Cyclone Alfred, passengers will now be onboard the Royal Caribbean ship for an extra three days – meaning disembarkation has moved from March 7 to March 10.

The round-trip voyage is based out of the Port of Brisbane, which is located in Queensland Australia and is serving as Quantum-class vessel’s homeport through early April.

However, the intense weather system – which is currently a Category 2 storm with wind gusts of up to 102 miles per hour – has forced the cruise port to temporarily close.

“Due to the development of the storm, and the closure of the Port of Brisbane, we have decided to remain at sea and safely away from the storm until it moves ashore by week’s end. We will return to Brisbane on Monday, March 10, instead of Friday,” Royal Caribbean wrote to current guests.

“We’re terribly sorry for the last-minute change caused by the weather – your safety is our top priority. Please know, being onboard is one of the safest places because our ship can quickly move out of the way of any inclement weather,” continued the letter.

The 4,180-guest ship’s initial schedule would have had her returning to Brisbane right around the same time Cyclone Alfred is expected to make landfall – which is predicted to be the night of March 6 or early on March 7.

As part of the itinerary change, the 168,666-gross ton vessel will also revisit Noumea, New Caledonia, on March 7 – which guests previously had the chance to explore on March 3.

As a show of good faith, Royal Caribbean is doing its best to support its passengers through the inconveniences caused by the last-minute change.

First, all flights booked through the Air2Sea Team will be automatically adjusted without passengers needing to lift a finger.

Guests who booked directly with an airline, meanwhile, will be reimbursed up to $200 for domestic change fees and up to $400 for change fees on international flights.

Passengers were also given the option to extend their beverage and VOOM internet packages to last through the remainder of the sailing – and those that didn’t invest in a WI-FI plan were given a voucher for an hour of free internet to work out their new travel details.

Royal Caribbean Ship’s Subsequent Voyage Cancelled

Unfortunately, guests who were just days away from embarking on Quantum of the Seas’ weekend getaway cruise on March 7, 2025, got the short end of the stick.

The current sailing will get the three days that would have been used for the weekend cruise – not that the 3-day voyage would have been able to go ahead either way with the severity of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, which may yet intensity to become a Category 3 storm.

If the mini cruise had gone ahead, it would have only consisted of sea days and no port calls.

“Due to the development of the storm and the closure of the Port of Brisbane, the previous Quantum of the Seas sailing has been delayed returning to port, and as a result, our 3-night sailing has unfortunately been cancelled,” Royal Caribbean sent in a letter to booked guests.

“We’re truly sorry for the impact that this has on your vacation plans,” the Miami-based brand added.

Guests who were booked on the now-cancelled voyage will receive a full refund of their cruise fare and deposit. They will also be provided with a future cruise credit, although that amount will vary based on their stateroom category

More likely than not, the 2014-launched ship will resume its operations out of Brisbane with the 4-night Queensland Cruise scheduled to embark on March 10 – which features a single port call to Airlie Beach.

Carnival Sailings Also Impacted

They say misery loves company, and Royal Caribbean passengers will have plenty from the up to 2,826 guests who just learned that their upcoming cruise onboard Carnival Luminosa has also been cancelled due to the storm.

As with Quantum of the Seas, Carnival Luminosa is currently homeporting in Brisbane – which she will continue to do until early April.

In a story that will sound rather similar, the Spirit-class ship’s current sailing that embarked on February 23, 2025 – which is an 11-night voyage to destinations throughout Fiji, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia – has also been extended because of the weather and port closure.

While the ship was supposed to disembark on March 6, Carnival is now thinking that this won’t be able to happen until Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the soonest.

As a result, the subsequent voyage, which was another 3-day getaway cruise to nowhere embarking on March 6, has been cancelled.

“Regrettably, we have no option but to cancel Carnival Luminosa’s 3-day cruise departing tomorrow, 6 March.” Carnival Cruise Line Australia shared on Facebook.

“As the safety of our guests and crew is the priority, Carnival Luminosa’s current voyage will be delayed coming back from the South Pacific until it is safe to return to Brisbane, the earliest being Saturday morning,” the post continued.

Guests on the cancelled sailing will receive a full refund of their cruise fare and any pre-purchased packages – but it’s unclear what compensation may have been provided to the passengers currently onboard.

Depending on when the 92,720-gross ton vessel can safely return to Brisbane, she will likely resume normal operations with her 4-day sailing to Airlie Beach on March 9 or with the subsequent 3-day getaway cruise on March 13.

If additional sailings are impacted, Carnival will certainly notify guests of the changes as soon as possible.

Cruise Passengers Injured in Serious Barcelona Bus Crash

On the afternoon of Monday, March 3, 2025, a shore excursion took a turn for the worse for dozens of cruise passengers when their tour bus was hit by another bus carrying Italian students on a visit to the capital of Catalonia.

At least 53 people were injured in the collision, with four – including a child – currently hospitalized in critical condition.

While there will be a more formal investigation into what exactly happened, what we do know is the two buses collided on Barcelona’s busy Avinguda Diagonal, which provides access to the popular Sagrada Familia church.

It appears that the bus transporting the Italian students – who were visiting from Messina (Sicily) – swerved to try to avoid a pedestrian who was crossing the street illegally and ended up hitting the parked tour bus that was transporting the cruise passengers.

The cruisers’ bus was operated by Autocares Julià, and per a statement from a company spokesperson, was parked in an authorized area for passenger drop-off and pick-up at Central Diagonal Avenue.

At around 3 p.m. local time, the parked bus was in the process of loading cruise guests when it was hit with enough force to be pushed onto the sidewalk, where it then hit a tree and a lamppost.

A 60-year-old pedestrian was also hit, although it’s unclear if they were the person who triggered this unfortunate chain of events by crossing the street outside of the designated areas or just an unlucky bystander.

The scene of the crash quickly became chaotic – with 19 ambulances, 10 firefighter units, and several police officers deployed to the scene to triage and care for the injured.

“There are four critically injured, including a minor, and three less seriously injured. The rest have suffered less serious injuries for which they are being treated in various hospitals in Barcelona,” Deputy Mayor Albert Batlle, who was on the scene, told news outlets.

The injured were transported to local hospitals as needed, and the buses were removed from the scene by around 7:30 p.m. that evening.

The Impact on Cruising

Of course, the most immediate impact on the cruise industry will be to the cruise passengers who were on the bus.

According to the Autocares Julià spokesperson, their bus was carrying cruisers of various nationalities, but most passengers were either British, German, or Italian.

“They were on a cruise liner which had arrived in Barcelona earlier today and was due to leave in the next few hours. I don’t know whether there are any British tourists among the most seriously hurt. It is too early to say at this stage,” he said in a statement obtained by The Mirror shortly after the accident.

It’s unclear which cruise ship the guests were sailing with, as both Windstar Cruises’ Star Legend and Costa Cruises’ Costa Toscana called on the Barcelona Cruise Port that day.

Either way, it’s likely that at least some of the guests missed their cruise ship due to the need for medical treatment and/or to obtain a new form of transportation back to the pier.

This means they will need to either fly to the next port of call to re-board their ship or to coordinate with the cruise line to reclaim their luggage and make their way home.

Considering the unusual nature of a crash like this, both of the cruise lines would likely already be trying their best to support their impacted guests.

From a port perspective, it’s possible that the collision may reignite the fire behind Barcelona’s push to limit cruise ships.

“Very concerned and awaiting the situation of the accident between two buses in Barcelona. I am in permanent contact with Mayor Jaume Collboni and the emergency services, whom I thank for their quick action. All my support to those affected,” Catalonian regional president Salvador Illa posted on X.

Since October of 2023, Barcelona has imposed limitations on where cruise ships can dock to lessen pollution and congestion.

Since then, Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni has expressed his support of curbing over tourism further with stricter cruise ship limitations – and with this tourist bus crash one of several to occur lately – Mayor Collboni’s cause may be strengthened.

Ban On Wildlife Interactions Begins at Popular Caribbean Cruise Destination

Roatan, which is the largest island in the Bay Islands of Honduras, is an extremely popular destination for cruisers.

In 2024, it welcomed 1.7 million cruise passengers, making it the most visited cruise destination in Central America last year.

Beyond its stunning beaches and rich cultural heritage, Roatan offers unique wildlife encounters that have become wildly popular with tourists — especially cruise passengers.

The island has become particularly notable for its monkeys and sloths — so much so that many cruise lines offer specialized excursions to see these animals up close.

Here is the bad news — as of March 1, 2025, Honduras has doubled down on its new policies that protect local wildlife classified as vulnerable and endangered species.

This initially began on January 14, 2025, when five specimens of sloth bears were rescued after being illegally sent to Roatan.

On January 24, 2025, Honduras issued an official document detailing measures aimed at combating wildlife trafficking and ensuring the safety of endangered animals.

Honduras’ National Institute of Forest Conservation shared the cause of these changes, citing, “The drastic increase in the frequency of illegal trafficking, mismanagement and OVERMANIPULATION OF WILDLIFE observed in recent years on Roatan Island.”

Overmanipulation in this case is defined as “carrying and holding animals for exhibition and taking photographs.”

This applies to the critically endangered or rare wildlife species — including 2 and 3 clawed sloth bears, parrots, and monkeys, among others.

Visitors will no longer be able to handle or hold wildlife — but will still be able to observe them and even take a Sloth Selfie. Unfortunately for cruisers, one of the most recommended experiences in Roatan is about to change.

Impact on Roatan Cruise Excursions

Seeing that Roatan is popular among cruises, eight cruise lines currently offer itineraries that stop at the island.

This includes Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Virgin Voyages, MSC Cruises, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line.

Several of these cruise lines offer excursions and opportunities to visit wildlife sanctuaries — however, offerings may be changing amid the new guidelines.

Carnival Cruise Line currently offers a Monkeys, Sloths & Macaws excursion starting at $99.99 a person.

The current description of the excursion simply states that passengers visit monkeys, sloths, and macaws at their first stop. However, Carnival advises not to touch, disturb, or buy souvenirs made from marine life while on the island to support conservation efforts.

Norwegian Cruise Line also offers a Monkeys, Sloths & Macaws excursion beginning at $99 a person — a whopping $0.99 cheaper than Carnival!

Unlike Carnival Cruise Line’s excursion, which explores the island via bus, Norwegian Cruise Line’s tour takes place on boats cruising through the French Harbour.

This excursion is focused on sharing information about the local mangroves and also visits an animal sanctuary — featuring the monkeys, sloths, macaws, and various other species.

It is likely excursions like the ones Carnival Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line offer will not be affected — unless the animal sanctuaries they visit are found guilty of mishandling their animals.

There are three popular locations in Roatan among cruise goers where you can — or could — interact with sloths and monkeys.

Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout, AJ’s Monkey and Sloth Tour, and Jungle Top Animal Park are all known for their extremely interactive animal experiences — including playing with monkeys and holding the sloths.

Unfortunately, for passengers seeking to interact with this wildlife instead of going on the cruise excursions, they may find that with the new regulations put in place, interactions will be more limited.

By respecting these restrictions and choosing responsible excursions, visitors can actively support Honduras’ conservation efforts and protect Roatan’s unique wildlife.

Virgin Voyages Makes Group Cruises Simpler and More Rewarding

What could be better than sailing with your favorite crew on a cruise ship?

If Virgin Voyages has its say, the answer is its new-and-improved “Circles, Groups, and Weddings” group travel program.

Just like the catchy name suggests, this revamped program caters to circles of friends, large groups (including big families), and those looking to tie the knot on the high seas.

And it’s all been retooled to better support both passengers and travel advisors managing the big bookings.

“We made a commitment to our Travel Advisor community to always take feedback and turn it into action,” said Virgin Voyages CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu.

“This new program is a direct result of listening, learning, and making improvements,” he said.

The spruced-up Circles program that accommodates friends, family, coworkers, and other groups, now features more wiggle room for bookings.

Instead of a minimum 10-cabin booking – with deposits – on the same sailing, Circles no longer has a cabin minimum or deposit required and allows a hold on a block of cabins while passengers rally the troops and confirm their squad.

Read Also: What Are Group Cruises?

The program is designed to allow groups time to build their groups at their own pace while locking in any special promotions or pricing on up to 16 cabins.

It also gives guests 10 percent off for bookings 180-plus days out when sailing on Virgin Voyages’ fleet of three 110,000-gross-ton, 2,700-passenger ships, Scarlet LadyValiant Lady, and Resilient Lady.

It will apply to Brilliant Lady when she debuts in September 2025.

Guests also enjoy a guaranteed dinner at the fleet’s Razzle Dazzle restaurant – or the new Lucky Lotus if the booking is on Scarlet Lady following her recent renovation last November.

For groups that already have their ducks in a row, the Groups program also eliminates the need for a deposit and only asks for an 8-cabin minimum, which can be held for 30 days to lock in pricing.

This option’s additional perks include onboard Bar Tab credits based on sailing lengths, with up to $300 for Groups sailing nine or more nights.

Guests also receive one guaranteed night dining at any eatery of their choice.

Couples looking to wed with Virgin Voyage will find the Weddings program mirrors the Groups option with no deposit needed and a 30-day hold.

However, the Weddings program doesn’t have a minimum cabin requirement.

When tying the knot at sea, Virgin has three tier options. While the first and second tiers are for more intimate gatherings, the third tier can accommodate up to 50 wedding guests. This option includes an additional $200 onboard credit for the couple.

Group Getaways

Enticing groups to travel is common on cruise ships, which offer hundreds of cabins and room for thousands of guests – not to mention plenty to do and see to suit diverse personalities.

Royal Caribbean, for example, provides a cruise credit for every eight staterooms (with a minimum of 16 guests) that can be used for one person’s fare or spread across the group.

Passengers who book five cabins with Norwegian Cruise Line get 15 percent off bookings, plus onboard credit, unlimited open bar, specialty dining, and more through group travel discounts.

Cruise lines, including Virgin Voyages, also offer charter options, where large groups can book an entire vessel to themselves.

Carnival Issues Warning About Private Slot Pull Tournaments

Joining in a slot pull tournament onboard a cruise can be a fun way to enjoy time in the casino, meet new friends, and just maybe hit it big. Privately organized tournaments, however, do come with a risk, and Carnival Cruise Line is advising guests to be cautious.

First of all, unlike other organized games such as playing Left-Center-Right for bets, which is prohibited, Carnival Cruise Line does permit privately-organized slot pulls.

These do have to be approved through each ship’s casino, which can only be done onboard the ship. Typically, the organizer will get such approval for the event on embarkation day or otherwise early in the cruise.

Sometimes this may not be possible, however, and guests who had hoped to be part of the event may be disappointed or frustrated. Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, has offered some advice and warnings about such events.

“As I’ve mentioned many times, slot tournaments need to be approved by the casino on board. People that have organized these private slot tournaments through Facebook need to get the approval of the casino by visiting the casino host on embarkation evening,” Heald explained. “They will always do their best to approve this, but sometimes they say no if the casino is extremely busy.”

At times, there may be no opportunity for private slot pulls, especially on shorter sailings or when there are multiple ports of call and the casino must be closed. Other special events in the casino might also mean there is no time suitable for these events.

The difficulty comes if the organizer has already collected money from eager participants but the event is not approved by the casino manager.

If the event cannot be confirmed, any guests who have pre-paid for their entry could have great difficulty getting those entry fees returned, and Carnival Cruise Line is unable to offer assistance.

Such a situation arose recently and while Heald cannot assist guests with getting their entry fees back, he does caution guests about how they participate in these events.

“I had a case this week where 40 people had paid $20 to a Facebook group moderator or whatever their title is,” Heald explained. “The slot tournament was denied and now people are having a problem getting their $20 back. And obviously there is nothing I can do to get involved in this.”

Because these private events are not run through the cruise line, the casino is unable to assist with refunds, credit, or other arrangements if the slot pull does not happen.

“Please can I remind everybody that if you are taking part in a private slot tournament, my advice would be not to pre-pay anybody that is advertising this,” Heald said.

“I know they can be fun and all I ask is that people do not pre-pay any participation fee and for anybody arranging this to please check with the casino once you are on board.”

How Slot Pulls Work

While different organizers may put together slot pulls in slightly different ways, in general these events take place on a single slot machine. Participating cruisers then pool their money – the entry fees – to play the machine for a longer period of time.

For example, if 20 cruise guests are joining in all with a $5 entry, the machine will be played for the entire $100 of all guests together. This can increase the odds of a bigger win, and any payouts are split between all entrants.

Each cruiser joining in has their turn on the machine to be part of the fun. Usually, the organizer’s casino card or ship card is used for the play, and they accrue any associated points or account benefits. Some organizers may randomly select a participant’s card to be used for points.

During the play, the group may decide together if any winnings should be played further. The organizer may provide small prizes for all participants or for the individual who has the most profitable pull during their turn in the game.

It should be noted that privately-organized slot pulls are different than slot tournaments organized by the casino. During a slot tournament, multiple machines are used, everyone pays an entry fee, and the goal is for individual players to accrue the highest total during timed play.

I’ve joined in casino-run slot tournaments, and they’re great fun. The only skill needed is to hit the “spin” button as fast as humanly possible in the hopes of “winning” more. If you’re the top winner, you win the tournament prize, which is usually a stated amount such as $100, $250, $500, or even more. (Nope, I didn’t win!)

A privately-organized slot pull can be a lot of fun as well, but all cruisers should carefully investigate how the event will be run, what the rules are, and how the entry fee is to be collected. Always be cautious with such events, and you can enjoy them just like any other fun on your cruise.
