Another City is Getting Fed Up With Cruise Ships

0

Galataport, the cruise port for Istanbul, is a wildly popular and bustling destination for cruise ships sailing the Eastern Mediterranean, but reports are emerging that the local population is not fully supportive of the sights and sounds that come with the vacation-at-sea option.

The port’s cruise terminal, which opened in 2021, is an underground facility that can accommodate 15,000 cruise arrivals per day and roughly 1.5 million per year.

As in other port cities, the cruise ships that carry them often announce their arrival and departure by blaring their horns, a practice that has some city residents fed up.

Residents Critical of Cruise Ship Horn Blasts

Galataport is situated on the Bosphorus, a strait connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara, in Istanbul’s city center. A September 2, 2023 report in The Guardian pointed out that some local people have grown weary of seeing mega-ships enter and exit the port, and of hearing the horn blasts.

“Ships from one particular cruise line even honk the theme to the television show ‘The Love Boat’ as it pulls into port,” The Guardian reported, referring to a Princess Cruises’ ship.

Indeed, the roster of ships scheduled to call at the port in the coming weeks reads like a who’s who in the cruise industry, including Norwegian Cruise Line’s 2,400-guest Norwegian Jade and 3,220-guest Norwegian Viva, Princess Cruises’ 3,660-guest Enchanted Princess, Celebrity Cruises’ 3,260-guest Celebrity Beyond, and MSC Cruises’ 4,000-guest MSC Splendida and 3,600-guest MSC Poesia.

Welcoming tourists is not the problem, according to the locals interviewed by The Guardian. Istanbul is accustomed to an influx of visitors, but some object to the size of the mega-ships entering the city center.

“Even if I want to go out and get a coffee, I check the cruise ships’ schedule first. They’re like big apartment blocks sailing in, five or six stories high. They block everything,” one Istanbul resident said.

Many smaller cruise ships also call at the port on a regular basis during cruise season. In the next month, smaller ships carrying under 1,000 guests, such as Azamara Cruises’ Azamara Quest, Seadream Yacht Club’s Seadream II, Seabourn’s Seabourn Encore, and Windstar Cruises’ Star Legend, are scheduled to dock at Galataport.

Redevelopment of the Port a Concern for Locals

Galataport entered the planning stages in 2016, with government officials envisioning a full redevelopment of what had been a hardscrabble industrial area with warehouses and a decades-old ferry terminal.

The construction of Galataport brought upscale restaurants, luxury retailers, a hotel, a spacious promenade, and the underground cruise terminal, essentially privatizing the entire area, local residents say.

The high-security area obscures the water view for residents, too, with metal walls separating the cruise ships and the dock, The Guardian reported.

However, the technological accomplishment of building an underground cruise terminal is hailed by the Turkish government as a major achievement that will bring more tourist revenue into the country.

The underground Galataport cruise terminal, at about 300,000 square feet, operates with a hatch system, said to be the first of its kind in the world.

All services are underground, including passport control and customs, luggage operations, and access to ground transport, for taxis and shore excursion buses.

The residents of Istanbul who are critical of cruise ships entering the port are not alone. In recent years, several destinations have taken steps to limit cruises, and in some cases, ban mega-ships from their ports.

Venice, Italy, is one example, where government officials in 2017 banned ships of 100,000-gross tons and larger from docking in the city center, due to environmental concerns. Since the ban took effect, large ships must dock in Marghera, on the mainland, and transport guests into the city center.

Royal Caribbean Cancels Another Cruise Due to Broken Ship

Royal Caribbean International has begun reaching out to guests booked on the September 8, 2023 departure of Radiance of the Seas with the news that the sailing has to be cancelled.

This is due to the ongoing engine repair issue that began during the ship’s August 25 cruise and has already cancelled the September 1 sailing.

Another Radiance of the Seas Cruise Cancelled

Guests booked on the upcoming September 8 sailing for Radiance of the Seas have received the unhappy update that their cruise must be cancelled due to the ongoing engine repairs for the ship.

The cruise was to have been the ship’s last northbound, 7-night Alaska sailing of the season, departing Vancouver, Canada on September 8 and visiting Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Sitka, and Skagway, as well as scenic cruising by Hubbard Glacier, before arriving in Seward, Alaska, on Friday, September 15.

Instead, Royal Caribbean has reached out to booked guests to notify them of the cancellation.

Despite our best efforts, we were unable to complete the needed repairs to make it in time to Vancouver. As a result, we’ll be canceling our Radiance of the Seas September 8th, 2023 sailing,” the notification read.

At the moment, the ship remains docked in Seward, where it has been stationary since arriving at the port on September 1. That first September cruise was cancelled on embarkation day due to the undisclosed propulsion issue.

What Does This Mean for Booked Guests?

Due to the unexpected issue, Royal Caribbean is offering compensation to impacted guests for the September 8 sailing. Passengers can choose to receive a full refund of their cruise, which includes any pre-purchased packages, that will be completed in 14 business days.

If the cruise was booked using a Future Cruise Credit, Royal Caribbean will still honor the credit so that it can be used for another booking instead.

In addition, all guests can receive a 100% Future Cruise Credit (FCC) for the Radiance of the Seas cancellation, which can be used on another sailing that departs within a year. This offer will be received by September 29, 2023.

Furthermore, guests will be reimbursed for non-refundable, pre-purchased travel fees – flights, hotels, trains, rental cars, etc. – up to $250 (USD) per guest for domestic changes, or up to $500 per guest for international changes. Receipts must be emailed to the cruise line’s Guest Relations company for review before reimbursement will be authorized.

What About Additional Cruises?

With two full 7-night sailings now cancelled for Radiance of the Seas and the ship still remaining in Seward, Alaska, guests on further upcoming sailings are naturally concerned.

After the September 8 cruise, the ship’s next voyage is schedule to be a reverse southbound Alaska sailing from Seward back to Vancouver, departing September 15. Since the ship is still in Seward at the moment, this might be a feasible cruise to set sail as planned.

The following sailing is a 7-night Alaska Glacier itinerary roundtrip from Vancouver departing on September 22, and is the ship’s last sailing of the Alaska season.

Following the Alaska season, Radiance of the Seas is scheduled to reposition to Tampa, Florida, via a pair of one-way sailings.

First, the ship will move from Vancouver to San Diego departing on September 29 with calls in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California along the way. The following cruise – departing October 7 – will transit the Panama Canal and visit ports in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia.

At the moment, sailings from September 15 onward are still scheduled to depart as planned. Guests booked on upcoming sailings, however, should be sure their contact information with Royal Caribbean is updated so they can be alerted to any delays, adjustments, or cancellations as quickly as possible in case of changes.

Carnival Cruise Line Addresses Yet Another Unfounded Rumor

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald has spoken out about another rumor circulating on social media, this time addressing the cruise line’s beloved towel animals. Such rumors are easily spread but without substance, yet can still be of concern to eager cruise travelers.

Towel Animal Rumor Is Untrue

A new rumor circulating online has announced that starting November 1, Carnival Cruise Line will be implementing a new policy ending the practice of placing “towel animals” in guests’ staterooms.

Though the so-called announcement cites “Carnival corporate policy” and claims the information comes directly from a guest’s stateroom attendant, there is no such official announcement.

Carnival Cruise Line Towel Animals
Carnival Cruise Line Towel Animals

“This is 100% false, ridiculous, nonsensical information,” said John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador. “We are not removing the towel animals. They remain an iconic part of what we have been for 52 years, and they always will be.”

The reasoning given for the rumor is that the towel animals “take too much excessive time” and therefore detract from a stateroom attendant’s other duties as they clean multiple cabins.

About Towel Animals

Yes, it does take a couple of minutes to craft that fluffy white elephant, floppy-eared dog, or other towel animal. However, any Carnival guest who has attended the onboard instructional class to learn how to fold their own towel animals or seen towel-folding demonstrations knows that experienced attendants can make these creations quickly and efficiently.

Some of the favorite towel animals onboard include the long-necked dinosaur, quirky pig, romantic swans, the monkey or bat hanging from the stateroom ceiling, or even the bear, stingray, rabbit, or bullfrog.

Carnival Cruise Line Towel Animals

Among the more elaborate creations include the huge alligator some guests might find lounging on their stateroom bed or even human-like figures crafted in part from guests’ own clothing or accessories such as hats and sunglasses.

Finding out which towel animal will make an appearance each day is a fun part of the cruise for many Carnival guests. Passengers can even request their favorite towel friends, and many travelers save their menagerie throughout their cruise to enjoy a growing zoo every day.

If they prefer, guests can ask attendants to skip the towel animals altogether.

On some sailings, Carnival crew members also put together a towel animal parade or showcase, when a full range of creations are displayed on the pool deck or in one of the ship’s lounges for guests to admire.

Other Recent Rumors

Heald has addressed a variety of rumors recently, always resulting from misinformation on social media.

For example, recent discussion about gratuities offered to crew members and how those tips are related to their overall salaries had to be clarified, ensuring guests that no, Carnival Cruise Line does not use gratuities to pay team member salaries.

Heald has also needed to quell concerns about priority boarding benefits and how procedures work at different embarkation ports, and also recently addressed guests’ thoughts on cheating at onboard trivia games.

Carnival Cruise Line Deck Party

Heald, who has served with Carnival Cruise Line since 1989, is the cruise line’s official “brand ambassador” and has more than 530,000 followers on social media.

He uses his enormous presence and his dry British wit to answer hundreds of questions every day, as well as keep all Carnival cruisers updated on the company’s goings-on.

Details about loyalty VIFP gifts, previews of menu or dining changes, dress code concerns, emergency itinerary or schedule updates, behind-the-scenes looks at ships under construction, and clarifications about onboard policies are just a few of the topics Heald regularly discusses.

He also joins special sailings every year, the wildly popular “For Fun’s Sake” cruises with special events and meet-and-greet opportunities available. The 2024 FFS Cruise will be aboard Carnival Horizon in February, visiting stunning Caribbean destinations.

Cruise Ship Makes Maiden Visit to Bristol Port

UK-based Ambassador Cruise Line’s second ship, newly launched in May 2023, made her inaugural visit to the Port of Bristol. The cruise line markets itself as a premium, no-fly line geared to British cruisers looking to sail from UK ports.

Ambition Begins Six-Itinerary Cruise Series

Ambition, a 1,200-guest ship operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, arrived at England’s Port of Bristol to begin a series of sailings from the port’s Royal Portbury Dock. The ship’s current 11-night “British Isles Discovery” itinerary will take guests to destinations such as Dundee, Isle of Skye, and Isle of Mull, Scotland, and Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The ship began sailing for Ambassador Cruise Line in May 2023, and followed the launch of the line’s first ship, Ambience, which debuted in 2022. The cruise line was formed in 2021, becoming the first new British cruise line to join the industry since 2010.

Ambition is the former AIDAmira, which formerly sailed for AIDA Cruises. Ambassador announced in early 2022 that it was acquiring the ship. Prior to joining the AIDA fleet, the ship, built in 1999, also sailed for Festival Cruises, Ibero Cruises, and Costa Cruises.

Ambition will offer six sailings from Bristol in 2023, including the “British Isles Discovery” voyages plus short, two-night “A Taste of Ambassador” cruises and longer voyages as well, such as the 17-night “Jewels of the Mediterranean” cruise, departing on September 16.

The ship offers 680 cabins, including 113 suites and 125 balcony staterooms. She has two main dining rooms, specialty dining venues, a wellness center, and two pools.

Cruise Line Finds Success With No-Fly Option

The cruise line caters to guests who wish to avoid flying to an embarkation port, and offers departures from London Tilbury, Newcastle Tyne, Dundee, Edinburgh Leith, Falmouth, Liverpool, and Belfast, in addition to Bristol.

We’re seeing significant demand for Bristol sailings on our small to mid-size ships with holidaymakers from the West eager to get away this year. Our no-fly holiday options have proved a real hit, with guests telling us that they love driving to a port, parking their car and boarding our ships with a minimum of hassle, said Christian Verhounig, CEO of Ambassador Cruise Line.

Verhounig added the expansion of the Ambassador fleet to two ships shows the strength of the cruise line and the wider cruise industry in general.

We are excited to welcome Britain’s newest cruise line to Bristol Port, giving local residents of the West a quality range of no-fly cruises from the Port, said James Stangroom, Director of The Bristol Port Company.

The Bristol Port Company has two cruise ship docks: Avonmouth Docks and Royal Portbury Dock. In 2023, Bristol will see 14 cruise calls, including the six from Ambition. In 2024, the port expects 18 cruise ship calls, and seven of those will be from Ambition.

Line’s First Ship Debuted in 2022

The 48,123-gross ton ship’s inaugural sailing from Bristol follows 18 months after the launch of Ambassador’s first ship, the 70,285-gross ton Ambience. In her first season with Ambassador Cruise Line, Ambience, which accommodates 1,400 guests, sailed 18 cruises and accommodated nearly 30,000 passengers.

She entered service in 1990 and formerly sailed with the Princess Cruises fleet. The ship features 789 staterooms in six cabin categories. Together, Ambience and Ambition will visit 166 ports in 60 countries during the 2023/24 season.

Among the upcoming cruises aboard Ambition is a special two-night sailing from Bristol to London, departing on November 10 and featuring British actress and celebrity Linda Lusardi. The cruise will offer a special program of events that includes a gala dinner, performances by the Ambassador Theater Company, and a conversation session with Lusardi.

Ambassador Cruise Line is an adults-only line, except for certain, advertised multigenerational sailings, and is geared to the 50-plus market.

MSC Cruises Expands Sports Sponsoring With Miami Dolphins Deal

In a strategic move that unites the worlds of cruising and sports, MSC Cruises has teamed up with the Miami Dolphins for a multi-year partnership, starting from the 2023 football season.

MSC Cruises, already the world’s third-largest and fastest-growing cruise line, will now serve as the Official Cruise Line of the Miami Dolphins.

The move follows a trend of cruise lines moving into sports sponsorships. Just a few weeks ago, Royal Caribbean announced a deal with Inter Miami. MSC Cruises has had a deal with Formula 1 for nearly two years, and Carnival Cruise Line has a longstanding relationship with Miami Heat.

New Partnership Between MSC and Miami Dolphins

MSC Cruises, NFL team Miami Dolphins, and the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami have announced a multi-year partnership that will bring the world of cruising and sports together.

The collaboration between MSC Cruises and the Miami Dolphins includes extensive branding opportunities at the Hard Rock Stadium, including in-stadium digital signage and various commercial placements.

Besides hosting the Miami Dolphins’ home games, Hard Rock Stadium also hosts a range of world-class events, from international soccer matches to concerts, giving MSC Cruises a large platform to show off its brand.

Suzanne Salas, Senior Vice President of Marketing & E-commerce, MSC Cruises USA, shared her enthusiasm: “South Florida isn’t just home to our U.S. headquarters and many of our team members, but it’s also an important source market for MSC Cruises.”

“The Miami Dolphins is a beloved institution in Miami and for NFL fans across the nation, and we know cruise fans love football. This partnership with the Miami Dolphins will bring awareness to MSC Cruises as a perfect vacation option for Dolphins fans.”

MSC Expanding the US Footprint

The partnership coincides with MSC Cruises’ expanding footprint in the U.S. market. This winter, the cruise line will feature its most extensive presence to date, with five ships sailing from American homeports.

Three ships, including the 169,400 gross tons flagship MSC Seascape, MSC Divina, and MSC Magnifica, will sail from PortMiami.

MSC Seascape operates week-long cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean, with calls to Ocean Cay and Nassau; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; Grand Cayman; Cozumel, Mexico; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and more.

Accompanying her is MSC Divina, which sails short 3-night trips to The Bahamas and extended 11-night cruises across Central and South America. Additionally, MSC Magnifica will operate short cruises to The Bahamas and Key West.

The cruise line is also constructing a new state-of-the-art terminal in Miami, set to be North America’s largest when it opens next year.

Katharine Bohlmann, Miami Dolphins Vice President of Corporate Partnerships: “We are excited to partner once again with MSC Cruises in our pursuit to continue elevating the fan experience. As two organizations with a large footprint within South Florida, this organic partnership aligns with our organizational values and dedication to the South Florida community.”

A Growing Trend in Sports Sponsorship

MSC Cruises’ new partnership with the Miami Dolphins isn’t the cruise line’s first foray into sports sponsorships. In 2022, MSC Cruises entered into a multi-year partnership with Formula 1.

However, other cruise lines also make headway in sports team partnerships. Royal Caribbean International has a partnership with Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami Football Club.

Likewise, Carnival Cruise Line has partnered with the Miami Heat for many years. Micky Arison, chairman of Carnival Corporation, is also the owner of the NBA team, connecting three major sporting teams in Miami to the cruise industry. Holland America Line and Princess Cruises have also got involved with sports teams.

Disney Cruise Ship Changes Itinerary Ahead of Hurricane Lee

Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy will not be sailing to Bermuda as planned for her September 9, 2023 departure. With Hurricane Lee developing in the Atlantic Ocean and predicted to make a turn toward the island as a major storm, the ship will instead be sailing an alternate itinerary for a smoother, safer experience for all guests.

Disney Fantasy Itinerary Change

With Hurricane Lee now active in the Atlantic Ocean and forecast to impact Bermuda as early as September 15 or 16, Disney Cruise Line has opted to adjust Disney Fantasy‘s September 9, 2023 departure to stay away from the storm’s potential track.

“Based on the storm’s current forecast track, Bermuda and the seas around Bermuda will be potentially impacted over the next week and a half, making it unsuitable for cruise travel. As a result, we have made modifications to the itinerary that bypass Bermuda,” the notification to booked guests reads.

Instead, Disney Fantasy will now be sailing a Western Caribbean cruise, with an extra call to the cruise line’s private Bahamian island, Castaway Cay. The itinerary also includes Cozumel, Mexico as well as George Town, Grand Cayman.

The ship will also still be visiting Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, as previously planned. The sailing remains as an 8-night cruise from Port Canaveral, with no changes to the ship’s embarkation or debarkation times.

“The safety and well-being of our Guests and Crew Members is our top priority and we appreciate your understanding,” the email continued.

The 129,700-gross ton, Dream class Disney Fantasy can welcome 4,000 guests for each sailing. Homeported from Port Canaveral, the ship offers primarily Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean sailings, with occasional Southern Caribbean, Bahamas, or Bermuda itineraries.

Disney Fantasy was also impacted by what became Hurricane Idalia, when the ship’s August 26 departure became an Eastern Caribbean cruise rather than a Western Caribbean itinerary.

Compensation Provided

Many guests will be understandably disappointed to no longer be sailing to Bermuda as planned. To compensate for that disappointment, Disney Cruise Line is offering up to $200 (USD) of onboard credit per stateroom for guests to use for spa treatments, specialty dining, drinks, souvenirs, photos, or other onboard purchases.

As expected, all Port Adventures already booked for Bermuda will be cancelled and refunded, while guests may begin booking tours for Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Castaway Cay.

Each reservation will also receive a one-time 20% discount on a future Disney Cruise Line sailing, subject to terms and conditions. The new cruise must set sail within two years, is subject to blackout dates, and may not be used for special holiday cruises or maiden voyages.

First of Many Expected Itinerary Changes

While Hurricane Lee is still more than a week away from direct impact on popular ports of call, the storm’s anticipated intensity and track has cruise lines already carefully watching its development.

At the moment, Hurricane Lee is a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour (129 kilometers per hour). The center of the storm is located 1,050 miles (1,690 kilometers) east of the Virgin Islands, but is moving west-northwest at 13 miles per hour (21 kph).

Hurricane Lee
Hurricane Lee

While there is still great uncertainty about precisely how the storm will develop in the coming days as well as its exact track, Hurricane Lee is expected to strengthen significantly, perhaps to a major Category 3 or Category 4 storm that could have devastating impacts on any land it encounters.

At the moment, the storm’s predicted track looks to be skimming north of the Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic before making a hard turn to the north, perhaps heading directly toward Bermuda before coming close to Nova Scotia.

This may well cause a number of itinerary changes in the coming days, including sailings planning to visit the Eastern Caribbean, Bermuda, or Canada and New England, depending on sailing dates and exact routes.

Hurricane Lee is active during the historic peak period for the Atlantic hurricane season, which is generally around September 10. Any cruisers with travel plans in the next few weeks – no matter which cruise line – should stay alert to potential storms and their impact on cruise itineraries, homeports, and ports of call.

Carnival Cruise Line to Offer New Deployment from California

Carnival Cruise Line has announced an exciting new deployment for San Francisco in 2025, with Carnival Legend now planned for the California homeport.

The ship will offer a variety of cruises ranging from 4-15 nights, including special Carnival Journeys sailings to highly desirable bucket-list destinations.

Carnival Legend to Sail from California

Beginning in April 2025, the Spirit-class Carnival Legend will offer amazing sailings from San Francisco, including cruises to Alaska, Mexico, and Hawaii. Carnival Legend will replace her sister ship, Carnival Miracle, from the California homeport, but will still bring Carnival fun to eager cruisers.

“Carnival Miracle has been sailing from San Francisco since 2022, so we wanted to offer our guests a new option for the 2025 season – Carnival Legend is a sister ship to Carnival Miracle,” said Fred Stein, vice president of revenue planning and deployment. “She’s similar in size and layout, but offers some variety in terms of features and amenities.”

Carnival Legend measures 88,500 gross tons with 12 decks of amenities to offer guests, including Guy’s Burger Joint, the BlueIguana Cantina, Bonsai Shushi, the Serenity adults-only retreat, a 9-hole miniature golf course, a 14,500-square foot Spa Carnival facility, the Punchliner Comedy Club, and much more.

The ship can welcome 2,124 guests at double occupancy, or as many as 2,610 passengers when fully booked with all berths filled.

New Itineraries Announced and Now on Sale

With the new itineraries for Carnival Legend from California now available for sale, it’s likely these exciting destinations will ensure the ship is fully booked for many 2025 sailings.

First, Carnival Legend will reposition from Tampa, Florida to San Francisco, California with a special Carnival Journeys sailing that will depart Florida on April 24, 2025. The ship will visit Cartagena, Colombia before completing a full transit of the Panama Canal – a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many travelers.

The ship will then continue to Puntarenas, Costa Rica and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, before arriving in San Francisco on May 8, 2025, an arrival sure to be a celebratory occasion as the ship settles into her new homeport.

Carnival Legend Cruise Ship

From San Francisco, Carnival Legend will offer 4-night Baja Mexico weekend getaways, visiting Ensenada, Mexico. These sailings will alternate with 10-night Alaska sailings to top ports of call in the Last Frontier, including Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan. Alaska cruises will also enjoy scenic cruising in the Tracy Arm Fjord, as well as a stop at Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

“Carnival Legend will be a perfect addition to the port as we continue to expand our West Coast service offerings and strengthen our position as the cruise line embarking more guests than any other operator from California,” said Stein.

In addition to Carnival Legend, two other Spirit-class ships will also be sailing Alaska in 2025: Carnival Spirit and Carnival Luminosa, both offering roundtrip cruises from Seattle, Washington.

After Alaska

Following the close of the 2025 Alaska sailing season, Carnival Legend will then offer a roundtrip Carnival Journeys Hawaii cruise, a 15-night voyage that will visit four ports of call in the tropical paradise – Kahului, Maui; Honolulu, Oahu; Nawiliwili, Kauai; and Hilo, Hawaii.

Carnival Journeys Hawaii sailings offer the unique opportunity for travelers to enjoy the Aloha State without the need for a lengthy flight to reach Hawaii. These cruises include Hawaiian-themed entertainment and activities, and extra special touches to make the unique destination even more memorable.

It is unknown where Carnival Legend may sail after the 2025 Alaska sailing and her special Hawaiian cruise, but Carnival Cruise Line is releasing further 2025 and 2026 itineraries in the coming weeks, with something for every cruiser to enjoy, no matter where they want to set sail.

New Virgin Voyages Ship Indefinitely Delayed, Cruises Cancelled

The launch of Virgin Voyages’ fourth ship, which was to enter service in December 2023, has been delayed indefinitely, the cruise line quietly announced in a September 7, 2023 press statement promoting a raft of new itineraries.

Supply chain and staffing issues, and construction delays prompted the postponement of the new vessel and the cancellation of several sailings.

Brilliant Lady Cruises Cancelled Into 2024

Brilliant Lady, the fourth ship in the Virgin Voyages fleet, will not debut in December as planned, marking another ship launch delay in the cruise line’s short history. The ship is under construction at a Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa, Italy, and was floated out of its construction bay on November 25, 2022, marking the start of its interior design.

Due to ongoing staffing challenges, and supply chain and construction issues, Virgin Voyages has cancelled the ship’s cruise schedule through April 2024, and no firm launch date has been disclosed.

The cruise line, saying it is susceptible to global issues, is still evaluating possible new launch dates.

We launched Virgin Voyages in the UK two years ago and have since taken the industry by storm, but even the strongest businesses face unforeseen challenges every now and then, said Shane Riley, Vice President of UK/International Sales at Virgin Voyages.

We are sorry that our Sailors who were excited about Brilliant Lady will have to wait a little bit longer, but we know they’ll love the itineraries as much as we do. We’re also looking forward to sailing out of Portsmouth again on Resilient Lady and welcoming Sailors on-board to explore the world in true Virgin style,Riley added.

Virgin Voyages has cancelled Brilliant Lady’s two inaugural sailings, a 5-night cruise roundtrip from Miami on December 24, and a 7-night cruise roundtrip from San Juan on December 30.

The ship was to homeport in San Juan through April 2024, but the line has now cancelled sailings with departure dates of January 6, March 23 and 30, and April 6, 13, and 20.

The April 20 sailing was a transatlantic voyage from the Caribbean to Lisbon, Portugal, as the ship was slated to reposition to Europe for the summer season.

Cruise Line Offers Series of Replacement Voyages

Virgin Voyages has scheduled replacement voyages aboard Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady, offering booked cruisers a choice of similar sailings with departure dates that match, or closely match Brilliant Lady’s original cruises.

For example, guests booked on Brilliant Lady’s December 30, 2023 departure, the 7-night cruise from San Juan, can instead choose either Scarlet Lady’s 6-night New Year’s Ahoy cruise departing December 27 from Miami, or Valiant Lady’s 8-night New Year’s Ahoy sailing, departing December 30, also from Miami.

Replacement sailings are offered for every cancelled cruise, including the transatlantic voyage, as Scarlet Lady will sail from Miami on April 21 on a 14-night crossing to Barcelona.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether guests already booked on Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady replacement cruises would be affected. Also, Virgin Voyages has not confirmed what its refund policy will be for any guests who wish to cancel and not rebook on an alternate ship. It is anticipated, though, that full refunds will be provided.

Earlier Ships Also Faced Launch Delays

Virgin Voyages, an adults-only line founded by Richard Branson, currently has three ships at sea: Scarlet Lady, which launched in October 2021; Valiant Lady, which entered service in March 2022; and Resilient Lady, which debuted in May 2023.

Scarlet Lady and Resilient Lady also faced construction, staffing, and other challenges, and were delayed. Scarlet Lady’s delay was Covid-related, since her debut was originally planned for 2020, before the outbreak shut down the industry.

Resilient Lady originally was scheduled to debut in August 2022, but was postponed due to supply chain obstacles and a level of uncertainty for international travelers based on Covid levels at the time.

All of the Virgin Voyages ships are identical, at 110,000-gross tons and with 1,400 cabins accommodating 2,770 guests. The ships focus on entertainment, and broke new ground with a series of specialty restaurants that replace the industry’s main dining room tradition.

Virgin Voyages Announces 27 New Itineraries

Virgin Voyages took the wraps off a slew of new itineraries its three ships will sail through April 2025, featuring 19 new port of calls.

The new roster of cruises, announced on September 7, 2023, includes special Halloween voyages and a series of sailings from Portsmouth, in the UK.

Virgin Voyages’ Itineraries Feature 19 New Port Calls

New itineraries and ports of call, along with limited-time discounts and spending credits on some cruises, are included in Virgin Voyages’ just-released ship schedules through April 2025.

The adult-only line launched by Richard Branson in 2021 unveiled 27 new voyages that will be operated aboard Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, and Resilient Lady.

A special series of Halloween voyages this fall will operate from October 13 through November 1 on Scarlet Lady, and through October 31 on Resilient Lady and Valiant Lady.

The cruise line’s fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, now under construction in Italy, was due to enter service in December 2023. However, supply chain, staffing, and construction issues have prompted a delay in Brilliant Lady’s launch, and the ship is not included in the new itinerary round-up. The line has not disclosed when the ship will enter service and has cancelled several sailings.

In the last year alone, our repeat Sailor rates have tripled. What’s even better is these loyal travellers want more – so we’ve listened. We’re thrilled to announce more than two dozen new itineraries featuring incredible experiences that will let these discerning holiday makers enjoy destinations that may be familiar, in a completely different way – the Virgin way,” said Shane Riley, Vice President of UK/International Sales at Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages also rolled out incentives for cruises operating through spring 2025 when booked by September 28, 2023.
