PortMiami Shows No Sign of Slowing With 10 New Cruise Ship Debuts

Key Aspects:

  • Port Miami has announced a new roster of ships for the 2025-2026 cruise season.
  • Ships from ten cruise lines will make their debut at the port, including from major brands like Virgin Voyages, MSC Cruises, Holland America Line, and more.
  • The new ships will make their Miami debuts from October 2025 through February 2026, bringing thousands of guests to the Cruise Capital of the world.

To quote William Shakespeare, “Why then, can one desire too much of a good thing?”.  Well, the cruise capital of the world sure is taking the bard’s words to heart.

For the 2025-2026 season, a whopping ten new cruise ships will make their debut at PortMiami, the busiest cruise port in the world. Notably, five of the ten newly announced ships are new build vessels.

Beginning in October 2025, Cunard Line’s Queen Elizabeth and Virgin Voyages’ brand new 2,700-guest Brilliant Lady will make their Miami debuts.

From the busy port, Queen Elizabeth will sail a 12-night Eastern Caribbean voyage that embarks on October 16, 2025.

The next day, Brilliant Lady will launch from the port with an 8-day round-trip cruise stopping in Philipsburg, St Maarten; Tortola, and Bimini Island on October 17.

Following in November, the port will host Holland America’s Zuiderdam, Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Xcel, and Oceania Cruises’ Allura.

Holland America’s Zuiderdam will kick off the month with a 7-night Eastern Caribbean voyage, which sets sail on November 1st.

Celebrity Cruises’ newest ship, the 140,600 gross-ton Celebrity Xcel will follow on November 8 with a 7-day round trip cruise stopping in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, St. Thomas Island, US Virgin Islands, and Amber Cove in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

Finally, Oceania Cruises’ Allura, the newest vessel in their fleet, will offer a 12-day round-trip Caribbean cruise on November 16.

Rounding out 2025 on December 5, PortMiami will welcome MSC Cruises’ Grandiosa, though the details of this sailing have not been announced.

Sailing into 2026, Windstar Cruises’ new Star Seeker will sail from the port in January.

Holland America’s Eurodam will join the fun in February, followed by Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest Prima Plus Class ship, Norwegian Luna in March.

Silversea Cruises’ Silver Nova will round out the new additions in May 2026.

“We are excited to welcome these new ships and their passengers to Miami,” said Hydi Webb, PortMiami Director and CEO. “Each new arrival underscores the strong partnerships we’ve built with our cruise lines and reaffirms Miami’s role as the world’s premier cruise destination.”

These new additions only bolster PortMiami’s status as the Cruising capital of the world, a title the port seems eager to hold on to.

PortMiami Continues Growing

These highly anticipated ship calls are a good sign for the world’s busiest cruise port, which continues to experience record-breaking growth.

The port welcomed a record-breaking 8.2 million passengers in the 2023-2024 season, and has already broken records in 2025 with the busiest cruise day on record in February.

Hosting ten ships in one day, and funneling through nearly 68,000 guests, the port managed the landmark day with ease and professionalism.

You’d think the port might want to slow down and take it easy after having already achieved so much success. However, it seems they’re all too eager to keep pushing forward full steam ahead with growth and expansion.

In July 2025, construction began on the brand new Royal Caribbean Terminal.

This new terminal will greatly expand Royal Caribbean’s operations from the port, with the capacity to process up to 7,000 passengers and host the larger Icon-Class vessels such as Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas, and the highly anticipated, 250,800 gross-ton Legend of the Seas, which is set to debut from Civitavecchia, Rome in 2026.

This comes just three months after opening the new MSC Terminal, which is currently the largest cruise terminal in the world, in April 2025.

If it’s indeed possible to have too much of a good thing, PortMiami will surely be the first to find out.

Voting Opens for the 2025 Cruise Hive Awards

Feedback is critical to cruise lines as they develop new amenities, plan diverse itineraries, or design completely new ships with brand new experiences.

The Cruise Hive Awards is our reader-driven annual ranking of the best of the best – what you, as experienced cruisers, love best about cruising!

Voting is now open, but you can only cast one vote in each category. You do not, however, have to vote in every category if you just don’t have an opinion on a particular ranking.

Voting will close on December 24, 2025, and winners will be announced the following week. Stay tuned to see if your picks take the top honors!

2025 Cruise Hive Awards
2025 Cruise Hive Awards

Best Cruise Ship Feature of 2025

Cruise ships are filled with amazing features, from pools and waterslides to dry slides, unique spaces, thrill rides, and much more.

So much so that we’ve limited the voting to the newest and most popular option from each cruise line, such as MSC Cruises’ adrenaline-inducing Cliffhanger and Royal Caribbean’s daring Crown’s Edge.

In 2024, Carnival’s BOLT roller coaster took the top honors. Can it hang on to the top spot for 2025?

Best US Cruise Homeport of 2025

Embarkation and debarkation at a homeport can make or break a cruise vacation. Nothing sours what should be a fun sailing like problems at embarkation or damages cruise memories like a troublesome debarkation. So which US homeport does it best?

This does not have to be your personal homeport (the one you live closest to), nor does it matter if you fly or drive to the homeport, just so long as it offers the best experiences.

Port Canaveral has taken these honors five times already, every single time the US homeport category is offered. Will it be a six-peat for the central Florida homeport in 2025?

Best Cruise Line App

While some cruisers prefer paper menus and daily newsletters, there’s no denying that apps can be convenient and helpful, packed with even more information, such as deck plans, account statements, and photo previews. But which cruise line has the very best app?

This is the very first year Cruise Hive has offered this Award category, so vote wisely – whichever one you choose, this should be the cruise line app to beat!

Best Cruise Line Private Island/Destination

The exclusive vibes of a private island or destination can be a very special experience for all cruise travelers. Some destinations offer very relaxed, chill vibes, while others have more excitement with waterparks, swim-up bars, and plenty of energetic fun.

Different cruisers enjoy different types of destinations and experiences, but Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay was the undisputed winner in 2024. Will another private destination be a successful challenger this year?

Best Overall Cruise Ship

This category is the broadest and you can enter any ship at all. You might prefer a bigger ship or a smaller ship, a newer ship or an older ship, an expedition vessel or a classic cruise liner, they’re all eligible!

Be sure to enter the ship’s complete name, or there might be some confusion if different cruise lines have similarly named ships, such as Disney Magic and Carnival Magic, or Star of the Seas, Star Princess, and Norwegian Star.

Celebrity Beyond was voted the very best in 2024, but will a different ship take the award for 2025?

Best Overall Cruise Line

Consider the whole cruise line experience, from diverse itineraries to outstanding crew to amazing ships to fantastic dining to showstopping entertainment.

In 2024, Carnival Cruise Line was voted the best of the best, but will policy and loyalty changes in the past year impact if the line can take the honors in 2025? Your votes will decide!

Best New Cruise Ship

Some spectacular vessels have joined various fleets this year, but which is the very best? Choose carefully – these ships won’t be eligible for this award next year after even more new ships debut.

It’s no surprise that Icon of the Seas took this honor in 2024, but will Royal Caribbean keep the honors for 2025 or will a different cruise line be the best this year?

Most Anticipated New Cruise Ship

With new ships already on the horizon and the new year fast approaching, which cruise ship is the one you’re looking forward to most in 2026? Multiple cruise lines are launching new builds in the new year, so which one is most on guests’ minds?

Star of the Seas was the star last year, and Icon of the Seas took the honors as the most anticipated new ship for 2024. Will Royal Caribbean make it a three-peat for the Icon class, or will another ship sail to the top spot even before it has ever set sail?

Europe’s Largest Cruise Terminal Opens in the Canary Islands

0

Key Aspects:

  • The new Las Palmas Cruise Port spans 150,000 square feet over two levels and can handle up to four ships at once.
  • Operated by Global Ports Holding, the terminal marks a €40 million investment in Canary Islands cruise infrastructure.
  • The new terminal first welcomed the 2,910-passenger Celebrity Apex, operated by Celebrity Cruises, on October 2, 2025.

The Canary Islands is a regular fixture on European cruise itineraries, with passenger traffic from ships increasing rapidly year over year.

With more passengers arriving, Gran Canaria has proudly and officially opened the largest cruise terminal in Europe, welcoming Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Apex during an 11-night cruise as its first vessel to arrive at its new Las Palmas Cruise Port on October 2, 2025.

The 2,910-guest ship’s arrival at Santa Catalina Pier marked the terminal’s operational debut and a milestone for the Canary Islands.

“With this terminal, we strengthen the Canary Islands’ position in the Mid-Atlantic and establish Las Palmas as a key hub for both homeport and transit cruise operations,” said Beatriz Calzada, president of the Las Palmas Port Authority.

The Las Palmas Cruise Port is part of a €40 million modernization plan to upgrade cruise facilities across Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote, and is considered a turning point for the island’s maritime industry.

Operated by Global Ports Holding, the largest cruise port operator in the world, the two-level terminal spans 150,694 square feet and features three boarding bridges, with capacity for up to four ships at once.

Beyond the main structure, the development includes an exterior esplanade of over 191,600 square feet of landscaped areas, pedestrian walkways, and a restored palm grove linking the terminal to the city’s waterfront promenade.

The new terminal, which GPH operates in partnership with SEPCAN, a local port services company based in Las Palmas, encourages guests to explore nearby shops and restaurants after disembarkation.

A plaque exchange ceremony took place aboard Celebrity Apex to commemorate the event, and was followed by a tasting of Gran Canarian specialties. The vessel continued its itinerary with a call at the island of Tenerife the following day.

Cruise Arrivals Surge

Cruise tourism in the Canary Islands has grown steadily over the past decade, positioning the archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean as one of Europe’s key year-round cruise destinations.

The islands’ location, mild climate, and proximity to both Europe and Africa have made them a favored stop for ships repositioning between continents, as well as a popular embarkation point for itineraries exploring Atlantic and Mediterranean routes.

According to data from the Las Palmas Port Authority, the port handled 489,714 cruise passengers and over 291 calls following the pandemic in 2022.

Between January and July 2023, Las Palmas alone recorded 854,560 cruise arrivals, a year-on-year increase of 92.9 percent.

In the first half of 2025, the Las Palmas Port Authority reported 1,187,066 cruise passengers across its province, up nearly 25 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

Of those, more than 550,000 were in Gran Cararia. The authority expects over 2 million cruise guests by the end of 2025.

The new terminal will be able to accommodate the growing demand, and was built with sustainable facilities designed to handle the increased traffic while preserving the islands’ environment and cultural heritage.

The design incorporates eco-friendly construction materials, energy-efficient systems, and solar panels to minimize the environmental impact of millions of guests descending up the islands each year.

Sapphire Princess Emerges from Dry Dock with Two New Dining Venues

Key Aspects:

  • A two-week dry dock has added two acclaimed specialty restaurants to Princess Cruises’ Sapphire Princess: Makoto Ocean and Crown Grill.

There are two more specialty restaurants for guests to enjoy onboard Princess Cruises’ Sapphire Princess, a 2,670-guest ship that has emerged from a two-week dry dock renovation.

The Gem-class ship, which entered service in 2004, now features the line’s popular Makoto Ocean and Crown Grill, both of which will begin serving guests on November 16, 2025.

The dry dock, completed at a shipyard in Portland, Oregon, provided general maintenance across the ship, but the addition of the two eateries was the highlight of the refit.

Makoto Ocean is situated on Deck 7 in the space formerly occupied by the ship’s Internet Café, while Crown Grill was installed in the former Savoy dining room on Deck 5.

Both of the new venues come with a cover charge of $60 per person, but are included in the line’s Princess Premier package, which enables guests to enjoy unlimited dining at all specialty restaurants.

Crown Grill is a steakhouse offering entrees of premium aged beef and chops, along with fresh seafood, and is a traditional favorite among the line’s guests.

Makoto Ocean is Chef Makoto Okuwa’s Edomae-style sushi venue that was introduced on the line’s Sun Princess when she debuted in 2024 and is offered on the just-launched Star Princess. Its celebrated cuisine features items such as truffle salmon, snow crab temaki, and toro tartare.

Princess Cruises announced in August 2025 that it was planning to add Makoto Ocean to Sapphire Princess and Diamond Princess before the two ships begin their dual-deployment to East Asia in early 2027.

Both ships are Japanese-built. Diamond Princess, also a Gem-class ship that accommodates 2,670 guests, is traditionally based in the Japan market, but in 2027, the line will double its capacity in the region as it adds Sapphire Princess to its East Asia program.

“With the addition of Makoto Ocean and Crown Grill, our guests aboard Sapphire Princess will enjoy two of our most popular dining experiences, elevating the culinary journey across her itineraries,” said Sami Kohen, vice president of food and beverage at Princess Cruises.

“We’re especially proud to bring these enhancements as Sapphire Princess prepares for remarkable seasons ahead, including our historic dual-ship deployment in Japan in 2027,” added Kohen.

Sapphire Princess and Diamond Princess together will operate 78 cruise departures from the Tokyo region in 2027, with many itineraries taking advantage of Japan’s spring cherry blossom season and its summer festivals.

Sapphire Princess to Sail Seasonal South America Cruises

As Princess Cruises looks forward to boosting its Japan capacity in 2027, the newly renovated Sapphire Princess has an ambitious schedule before her East Asia deployment.

The ship will depart for South America on November 16, 2025, sailing a 36-night Andes & Cape Horn Grand Adventure, ending in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The repositioning cruise sets up the ship for a series of South America cruises until March 2026, when she deploys to Rome.

The ship will sail the Mediterranean until May 2026, when she begins operating Northern Europe cruises for the summer 2026 season. In September 2026, Sapphire Princess will cross the Atlantic to Boston and offer fall itineraries to Canada/New England with cruises between Boston and Quebec City.

In December 2026, the ship will reposition to Southeast Asia for her series of cruises roundtrip from Tokyo and between Tokyo and Singapore through most of 2027.

Are Paper Newsletters Wasteful? Carnival Cruise Guests Respond

Key Aspects:

  • One environmentally-concerned guest believes Carnival Cruise Line should discontinue printing the FunTimes newsletter because “NOBODY” reads it.
  • On the contrary, thousands of guests responded and prefer the paper copy, whether it is easier to read, more convenient, less glitchy than the app, or just a fun souvenir.
  • Carnival Cruise Line previously discontinued printed newsletters after the pandemic, but brought back the FunTimes in early 2023.

In years past, the daily ship newsletter was the only way guests knew what was going on aboard their ship, from games and contests to special events, showtimes, dining themes, retail sales, art auctions, and much more.

Now, as more cruise lines rely heavily on their own apps, are newsletters a waste of paper? One Carnival guest thinks so, and reached out to John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, with their concerns.

“Just back from my Legend cruise. Don’t you agree by now Carnival should have come up with some kind of alternative to wasting ALL that paper in the Funtimes. NOBODY reads it,” the guest claimed. “We must protect nature, we must protect the rainforests. You have the Carnival app so why can’t you present this info to people only electronically. There just has to be a better way?”

The guest notes that they are a “proud member” of an environmental organization that seeks to protect ecosystems and combat global warming. There’s no doubt that wasted paper can be a conservation concern, but the key is whether or not Carnival’s FunTimes paper newsletters are useful.

While Heald did not express his personal thoughts on paper newsletters or environmental issues, he did open the discussion to his more than 640,000 followers, asking them:

  • A – Yes, I still like the paper copy of the FunTimes.
  • B – No, I only read FunTimes on the app.
  • C – I do not read the FunTimes at all.

I voted A myself, as I enjoy the paper copy and find it easier on the eyes than a glowing screen. I also think it is more convenient to quickly skim the paper for all the day’s highlights, rather than needing to scroll-scroll-scroll to find out what’s going on.

In just a few hours, more than 2,300 comments from other Carnival fans shared an overwhelming agreement that the printed FunTimes should stick around.

“My wife and I just had this conversation last night. We prefer the paper copy,” one guest noted with an interesting reason. “Carnival’s App is still glitchy at best so until that App works 100 percent perfect 100 percent of the time paper it is.”

It’s true that the Carnival Hub app can be challenging at times, especially if the ship’s internet service is less than reliable.

Many people also prefer to unplug as completely as possible while on vacation and may not always have their phones available (or charged!) to check activities. The paper FunTimes is easy to tuck into a pocket for reference.

In addition to just reading the newsletter onboard each day, guests even shared other uses they have for them. Some guests keep the FunTimes as a souvenir to remember their cruise, or even add it to a scrapbook. Others show them to friends and family members as a way to encourage them to try cruising.

Are FunTimes Recycled?

While it’s true that plenty of paper is needed for printing the FunTimes newsletter, Carnival Cruise Line does recycle.

“Carnival does an awesome job at recycling. I did the Behind the Fun tour and saw if first hand,” one guest noted. “Kudos and a big high five to Carnival and the awesome crew members who sort through all our trash and recycle it all appropriately!”

Of course, the recycling is more than just the FunTimes. Cans and bottles, other paper advertisements, packaging, and more are all carefully sorted for recycling.

Several guests did suggest that Carnival offer an “opt out” feature so guests could alert their stateroom stewards that they don’t need a paper copy. This might help reduce some paper use and provide a good compromise for those who prefer just to use the app.

This isn’t the first time the FunTimes (remember when it was called the Caper Paper?) has been criticized. In fact, Carnival Cruise Line stopped printing the newsletters following the pandemic as part of measures to limit how many people were in and out of staterooms.

The printed copies were so missed, however, that printing was resumed in early 2023 and the FunTimes has been printed ever since. The Carnival Hub app is also updated, so guests can use both options as they wish.

What Happens to Cruising Ducks That Aren’t Found?

Key Aspects:

  • One cruise fan raised an interesting question about the cruising ducks game: What happens when the rubber ducks are not immediately found?
  • While some cruisers had active imaginations regarding this answer, the ducks are usually left for guests or crew members onboard the next voyage to find.
  • The cruising ducks game continues to grow in popularity.

The point of hiding rubber ducks on a cruise ship is to bring joy to the other passengers or crew members who find the adorable toys – but what happens to ducks that aren’t found before the cruise disembarks?

“Does anyone know what staff does with any unfound ducks after the ship empties?” one cruise fan inquired in a Royal Caribbean forum on Reddit.

Personally, I was quite impressed with how creative – and on theme with the Halloween season – some of the responses got.

“They gather them in a circle, light candles and perform a RC Séance. Summoning good seas and high tips on the next cruise,” one person joked.

“Séance of the Seas confirmed?” someone chimed in next, referencing Royal Caribbean’s naming convention for its fleet.

But all jokes aside, the real answer is actually a lot less exciting.

As long as the ducks aren’t somewhere dangerous or creating an obstruction, they will typically be left in their hiding spots for guests embarking on the upcoming voyage to discover.

In fact, one option in the cruising ducks game is actually to re-hide the ducks for other guests to find instead of taking them home.

Most people label their ducks with their hometown and voyage, and it can be fun to see how far and long the ducks you find have sailed.

“A couple cruises ago, we found a duck that was dated from 4 months earlier. If they’re hidden well enough that other cruisers don’t find them, they’ll just sit there until someone does,” one recent passenger shared.

Alternatively, sometimes crew members will also pick up the odd duck to brighten their day and/or as a souvenir for a child or loved one waiting for them at home.

Popularity of Cruising Ducks Soars

While cruising ducks have been around for a long time, it’s really only in recent years that the game’s popularity has truly begun to take flight.

Highlighting this, some cruisers have started to bring giant ducks on their sailings in addition to the small, rubber variety.

In August, a giant 3-4-foot duck was spotted on a private balcony onboard Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas.

And just days ago, Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald shared a photo on his public Facebook page of another giant duck.

This time, a guest of Carnival Valor was wearing an inflatable duck costume while pretending to hide.

“I hid the biggest duck on Valor for Halloween!” the guest wrote to Heald.

“And people say the duck thing is out of control. Nonsense,” the brand ambassador cheekily replied.

Large Cruise Ducks
Large Cruise Ducks

There are occasionally times when duck hiding crosses the line from good fun into annoying or dangerous.

Most recently, Carnival publicly asked guests to stop a cruel prank where guests would hide ducks with fake tags that said the finder had won one free drink.

This joke unfortunately only led to frustration and confusion when the finders realized that they weren’t actually entitled to their drink.

Alternatively, Royal Caribbean has banned duck hiding in the Central Park area on Oasis-class and Icon-class cruise ships.

The purpose of the ban is to protect the plants that beautify Central Park, which can be damaged when guests hunt for the small toys.

Finally, Disney Cruise Line is really the first and only cruise line to outright discourage the game.

But considering I’ve found at least a quarter of my duck collection on Disney ships, the game appears to be alive and well onboard the most magical ships at sea.

Royal Caribbean Reveals Revised Itinerary Following Storm Delays

Key Aspects:

  • Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas has been stuck in Cape Liberty, New Jersey, due to a strong coastal storm.
  • After days of waiting, the cruise line has confirmed that the Oasis-class ship will finally set sail on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at 11 a.m. EST.
  • Unfortunately, the mega-ship will only be able to call on Perfect Day at CocoCay because of the delay – taking the itinerary from three port calls down to just one.

After what has surely been a frustrating start to the current cruise, passengers onboard Symphony of the Seas finally have some answers.

The Oasis-class vessel embarked on a 7-night Bahamas voyage in Cape Liberty, New Jersey, on October 12, 2025.

But due to a powerful nor’easter that has been wreaking havoc along the US East Coast, the Royal Caribbean ship has been stuck in the cruise port.

The Port of New York and New Jersey is expected to remain temporarily closed through the morning of Tuesday, October 14, when the worst of the stormy weather should have run its course.

This means that the 2018-launched ship will spend a second additional night in the cruise port, instead of just one.

“We have been monitoring a low-pressure system off the east coast of the US which impacted the Port of Cape Liberty this weekend,” Royal Caribbean wrote in a letter to current guests on October 13.

“Unfortunately, even with our best efforts and constant communications with the port pilots, the Port of Cape Liberty will remain closed today, so we will be staying alongside until 11:00 AM tomorrow,” the update states.

Obviously, this news makes the scheduled port call in Port Canaveral, Florida, on October 14 impossible.

Relatedly, the subsequent visit to Nassau, Bahamas, on October 15 has also been cancelled.

“Our new departure time means we’ll have to skip our visits to Port Canaveral (Orlando), Florida, and Nassau, Bahamas and we’ll arrive mid-morning on Thursday to Perfect Day at CocoCay,” the cruise line confirmed.

Perfect Day at CocoCay, which is Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas, was already on the itinerary for Thursday, October 16.

However, the 5,518-guest ship is now expected to arrive at 11:30 a.m. EDT instead of 7 a.m. EDT, as was initially planned.

Compensation Offered

The powerful nor’easter that has brought strong winds, heavy rain, and flooding to much of the East Coast is expected to release its grip and start moving east over the Atlantic Ocean by the afternoon of Tuesday, October 14.

However, the East Coast will continue to feel the effects of the coastal storm through Tuesday.

It’s no secret that the cruise lines are able to make sudden itinerary changes without providing compensation, especially for safety reasons.

However, Royal Caribbean has offered some compensation as a goodwill gesture, especially since the itinerary has gone from including three ports to just one.

First, all guests will receive a Future Cruise Credit for the total value of two days’ worth of their cruise fare, which can be put toward a future sailing that will ideally have much better weather.

This discount is meant to reflect the two days that the 228,081-gross ton vessel was stuck in port.

Additionally, a la carte drink prices onboard have been slashed by 50% for October 13, and those who purchased a Deluxe Beverage Package will receive a $35 non-refundable onboard credit.

And as always, any Royal Caribbean shore excursions that were purchased for Port Canaveral and Nassau will automatically be cancelled and refunded.

The funds will first be returned as an onboard credit, and any remaining amounts at the end of the voyage will be refunded to the credit card on file within 14 business days after disembarkation.

Carnival Cruise Line Clarifies Evening Beverage Offering

Key Aspects:

  • One Carnival guest is upset that hot chocolate is not available for free throughout the day on the Lido Deck.
  • Though they didn’t realize it during their cruise on Carnival Liberty, John Heald did clarify that free hot chocolate is available after 6 p.m.
  • Hot chocolate can also be purchased anytime from the onboard coffee shop or ordered for free from the continental breakfast room service menu from 6-10 a.m.

Enjoying a hot mug of one’s favorite morning beverage can be a real treat on a cruise, whether you have that first sip while watching the sunrise, enjoying the breakfast buffet, or attending a morning trivia.

But while coffee is by far the most popular hot morning beverage, it isn’t the only option. One Carnival guest, however, has noticed that their drink of choice has gone missing – or has it?

The guest contacted John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, to express their disappointment. Every week, Heald responds to hundreds of inquiries, comments, requests, and complaints, from issues as somber as spreading a loved one’s ashes at sea to the silliness of the butter or margarine debate.

While a morning beverage might seem to be on the sillier side, many people are very loyal to that first wake-up drink: just take away their coffee and see what happens. But what if their preferred drink isn’t coffee?

“Top of the morning to you! Just got off the Liberty yesterday. Noticed that Carnival took [away] the hot chocolate machines on Lido and put in a coffee shop that costs $5 for hot chocolate,” the guest explained. “For those of us that don’t drink coffee, we are all very sad.”

Carnival Liberty is homeported year-round from New Orleans, offering Bahamas and Western Caribbean sailings. The cruise the guest just departed would have been the ship’s October 5 departure, a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary to visit Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel and returned on Sunday, October 12.

Now, I happen to drink both coffee and hot chocolate, and I enjoy both. While I don’t necessarily get “very sad” if one is not available (grumpy is more like it), it can certainly be disappointing for cruisers when something they like may no longer be available.

Fortunately, Heald was able to clarify that hot chocolate is available, just not necessarily as the morning beverage the guest expected.

“We still have the free hot chocolate. It’s still there,” he said. “Someone else said the same thing recently and I confirmed with the ship and they still have the complimentary hot chocolate available after 6 pm on the Lido deck.”

That explains it – hot chocolate may not be available for free all day long on the Lido Deck (Deck 9 on the Conquest-class ship), but it is complimentary in the evenings.

Morning Hot Chocolate

If guests want a fix of hot chocolate in the morning, they can instead head to the onboard coffee shop. On Carnival Liberty, this is the Jardin Cafe starboard on Deck 5, Promenade Deck, near Club O2.

On other ships, the coffee shops may have different names, and the JavaBlue Cafe is a popular one on most Carnival vessels. In addition to coffee and hot chocolate, these cafes also serve a selection of decadent desserts for small extra fees.

Cruise Drink

While the coffee shop’s hot chocolate is not free, it is also not as simple as the powdered-mix-and-hot-water offered on Lido Deck each evening. Topped with whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup, it’s a more decadent drink worthy of a cruise vacation.

Milkshakes and specialty coffees, including spiked coffees, blended frappes, espresso, and cold brews are also available.

Guests can also order hot chocolate from the room service menu for that good morning sip right in the comfort of their stateroom. Delivery charges apply for much of the menu, but the good news for morning hot chocolate drinkers is that the continental breakfast is free from 6-10 a.m., including hot chocolate!

‘This Is Just One Cruise’: Carnival Unveils the Lost-and-Found Pileup

Key Aspects:

  • John Heald has shared a rare behind-the-scenes look at the processing of lost items onboard Carnival Conquest on debarkation day.
  • Popular items left onboard include sunglasses, jewelry, clothing, toys, shoes, water bottles, and much more.
  • The process to reunite a guest with their lost items can take several weeks, depending on the ship’s individual sailing schedule and homeport.

Most experienced cruise passengers have done it at least once: lost an item onboard and hoped they might get it back. Lost-and-found claims can take some time to process, but why?

It can be especially frustrating if you know exactly where you left the item, such as that lip gloss I left on the top shelf in the bathroom, yet days later it still hasn’t been located or returned (honestly, I didn’t care about getting the lip gloss back).

One anxious guest wrote to John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, about their frustrations on how long it has taken to track down their items.

“My husband and I were on the Glory. We left behind two bags of souvenirs,” the guest explained.

“I filled out the form on the very same day that I disembarked, describing the items in detail and explaining exactly where in my cabin I had left the bags. That was eight days ago and we still have not had the souvenirs returned. What is taking so long. This is not good customer service.”

Homeported from Port Canaveral, Carnival Glory offers 3- and 4-night Bahamas sailings. Based on the timing of the guest’s inquiry, they were likely on the ship’s September 29, 2025 departure, a 4-night trip that visited Celebration Key and Nassau, along with a fun day at sea.

Heald opted not to share the guest’s question right away because he knew he would be aboard several ships in mid-October and would have the opportunity for a firsthand look at the lost-and-found processing onboard.

Now, he’s shared a video showing exactly what goes on at the Guest Services desk when lost-and-found items are turned in.

While Heald was onboard Carnival Conquest rather than Carnival Glory, the two vessels are sister ships in the same class with the same guest capacity of 2,980 travelers at double occupancy, making their operations very similar.

First, Heald showed the piles and piles of items that were left onboard this one single cruise. Multiple boxes of lost-and-found items were stacked in the office, including:

  • Sunglasses
  • Jewelry
  • Portable fans
  • Water bottles
  • Charging cables
  • Walkie-talkies
  • Cell phones
  • Clothing
  • Neck travel pillows
  • Shoes
  • Children’s toys
  • An umbrella

“This is just from this cruise,” Heald confirmed. “And there is more stuff that is going to come.”

All the items are collected as the housekeeping teams clean out staterooms, making them ready for guests embarking that day.

Throughout the cruise, crew members would also have been collecting and turning in other items that might have been left behind in the casino, tucked under poolside loungers, dropped in the show lounge, or forgotten in other public spaces.

What Happens After Items Are Found?

Once a lost item is discovered, no matter where it was found, it will be turned in. That may first be to a supervisor in the immediate area, such as a casino manager, and later to Guest Services.

Each individual item is then catalogued with notes on where and when it was found, what sailing, and which ship.

“Then it all has to go back to Miami,” Heald noted. “But it won’t go off this cruise, it will go off next cruise because it has to go through customs and all the other paperwork has to be done. And then – and THEN – we will try and get it back to you.”

Since Carnival Glory is homeported from Port Canaveral, when the original poster’s items actually left the ship would have been after the next sailing, on October 3. At that time, the packages would have been transported to Carnival Cruise Line’s headquarters in Miami.

That might take a day or two, depending on how the items were transported and when they were picked up from Port Canaveral.

Heald has previously explained what happens to lost items at the cruise line’s Miami headquarters. They must be sorted and logged by ship and sailing date again, and staff works to match up individual items with lost items reports that guests have submitted.

Once confirmed, Carnival does return the items to guests. The entire process can take two weeks or longer, even when items are lost aboard ships on shorter itineraries.

If a ship is sailing longer itineraries, such as a Carnival Journeys cruise or a transatlantic voyage, it may be even longer before lost items can be returned.
