Carnival Cruise Line Shuts Down Ridiculous Luggage Fee Rumor

Key Aspects:

  • A rumor that Carnival Cruise Line will begin charging for checked bags in August 2025 has begun circulating online.
  • John Heald has confirmed the rumor is untrue and there is no fee to check bags when setting sail with Carnival.
  • All guests can use the self-assist program and there is no need to check bags if travelers can manage all their luggage.

Remember when airlines didn’t charge for checked luggage? Those were good days, when there wasn’t as much of a mad scramble for overhead bin space. Fortunately, cruise lines still don’t charge for larger bags, but is that about to change?

That is the focus of a recent rumor about Carnival Cruise Line, that new baggage fees are coming soon to a cruise terminal near you.

So persistent is the rumor that one concerned guest reached out to John Heald, the cruise line’s brand ambassador, to check if it was accurate.

“In one he said that he has an inside source that has told him that in August Carnival will start charging an extra $20 for every checked bag on short cruises that are less than 6 days,” the guest explained.

“I thought I would give you a chance, John Heald, to say if there is any truth in this.”

While Heald does not identify the exact content creator who has claimed to have this “inside source” his response does indicate that the individual is known to be unreliable.

“The silly chap is once again talking nonsense and please, please ignore him,” Heald said. “We are not charging for checked bags. He does not have a ‘inside source’ and you can bring your bags on cost-free as always.”

The so-called “inside source” is not identified, as is often the case with unfounded rumors. A friend of a friend who went on a cruise and talked to their waiter, who got it from the guest services clerk, who spoke with a junior plumber, who heard it for certain from a casino host, and so forth.

How Can Such Rumors Start?

While it’s clear that this latest rumor is just that, a rumor, and Carnival Cruise Line will not be charging for checked bags, how do such rumors get started?

It may be that the original source could have been a first-time cruiser asking about paying the porters at the cruise terminal and how much is appropriate.

First off, the porters who take your bags at the curb and ensure they get onto the correct ship are not cruise line employees. Therefore, Carnival Cruise Line has no say in any money that might exchange hands.

Second, cruise guests do not actually pay porters for their service. Any money offered is a voluntary tip for the convenience porters provide. Their assistance can be especially valuable for families or older cruisers who might have more difficulty managing unwieldy bags.

Because there is no set amount to tip a luggage porter, the answers can vary from $1 per bag to $5 for larger or heavy bags or even $20-30 or more for a full family or group.

Depending on how it was worded compared to the original question, it could seem like such an answer would mean a required payment for checking a bag with a cruise terminal porter, even though it is not true.

To be clear, no Carnival cruise guests are required to check bags, no matter what their size. The cruise line offers both self-assist embarkation and debarkation, which means guests keep their bags with them the entire time.

I’ve used self-assist dozens of times. While it can be a hassle to lug bags around for the first hour or two of a cruise, it is nice to know your luggage is always secure under your control.

The only caveat is that self-assist is truly that. You must assist yourself, as there is no additional help available to move your bags through the security checkpoint, across the terminal, up the gangway, onto the ship, and to your stateroom.

Staterooms are generally available from 1-2 p.m. If guests are boarding the ship earlier in the afternoon, they must carry their bags around until they are able to access their cabin.

On Carnival Cruise Line, travelers in suites or those who purchase the Faster to the Fun program have the benefit of dropping their bags in their stateroom immediately, even before the rooms are officially open.

That same perk is also available to guests who have reached the Platinum or Diamond level of the Very Important Fun Person (VIFP) program, though the program is being sunsetted and will not be available after May 31, 2026.

Humpback Whale Swims into Sydney Cruise Port, Causes Delays

Key Aspects:

  • A young humpback whale was spotted in Australia’s busy Sydney Harbour on July 16, 2025.
  • Ferry service was temporarily disrupted, but Carnival Splendor’s cruise operations appeared to be unimpacted (aside from giving cruisers something extra cool to see).
  • Local experts escorted the whale on its “grand tour” of the harbour until it exited safely.

Cruise guests of Carnival Splendor may have gotten to partake in a surprise whale watching experience in Sydney, Australia, while disembarking from a 9-night sailing and embarking on a new 4-night sailing on July 16, 2025.

At around 8 a.m. local time, a juvenile humpback whale was spotted in Fort Denison in Sydney Harbour, not far from the famed Sydney Opera House.

More likely than not, this whale was migrating south, and had potentially even been in the harbour as early as the night of July 15.

However, the initial sighting came about an hour and a half after cruise tracking data shows that the Carnival cruise ship arrived at the Port of Sydney at approximately 6:30 a.m. that morning.

But rather than making a quick visit, the whale instead went on a grand tour of the harbour and cruise port that lasted for several hours.

Along the way, the whale was supervised by the New South Wales (NSW) National Parks and Wildlife Service for its own safety.

“Most will hang out around Manly and then work out it’s not in the right place and swim away, but this one is having the full harbour experience,” said Dr. Vanessa Pirott, a whale expert who was on one of the boats that shadowed the marine creature throughout its adventure.

Starting in the morning and into the late afternoon, the animal swam by Circular Quay, which is home to the ferry terminal and the Overseas Passenger Cruise Terminal.

It then swam east to the defence base of Garden Island and to Watsons Bay before turning north to explore Balmoral Bay.

By the late afternoon, the young humpback had backtracked to explore Rose Bay in the East.

Ferry operations were temporarily suspended during the morning commute at around 9 a.m., but the ferries were up and running again shortly thereafter.

Meanwhile, it appears that the 3,619-guest Carnival cruise ship was docked during the delays.

She set sail on her next voyage on time at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time on July 16, which was to Moreton Island.

Carnival Splendor has also already visited the cruise port one more time to begin a 12-night sailing to Fiji and the South Pacific on July 20.

Protecting the Whale’s Safety

Humpback whales only recently made it off the endangered species list in Australia in 2022, thanks to significant growth in their population, but it’s still important to keep these animals safe.

An estimated 20,000 whales of various species around the world are killed by ship strikes annually, although it’s unclear how many of these are from cruise ships.

In order to prevent this curious whale from meeting that unfortunate fate, authorities supervised the whale’s movements until it safely left the harbour and returned to the “Humpback Highway” that runs along Australia’s east coast.

“NSW Maritime and NSW National Parks and Wildlife are literally escorting a school bus-sized mammal out of the harbour. It’s so easy for vessels to strike whales,” Dr. Pirott explained.

“They do things when you least expect it – [we’re] making sure it has space and is escorted out of the harbour, because this one is very inquisitive,” she continued.

In addition to temporarily halting ferry traffic while the whale was blocking the route, the experts stayed in a formation around the side and rear of the animal to prevent other vessels from getting too close.

The whale migration season in Australia runs annually from May to November, and while most whales do not make any side quests into the busy port, there have been four other humpback sightings in the busy port this year.

This instance was just especially unique because this whale was much more inquisitive and curious than previous marine visitors.

New Entertainment Venues Revealed for Upcoming MSC World Asia

Key Aspects:

  • MSC World Asia will debut the first retro-inspired venue in the fleet, The Clubhouse, with amazing game and activity options.
  • Luna Park and The Harbour are both being updated and enhanced for the new vessel to offer even more entertain choices.
  • Popular entertainment venues such as the World Theater, the World Promenade, and more than 40 bars, lounges, and restaurants will be featured.

MSC World Asia will be the third World vessel, following her sister ships MSC World Europa and the just debuted MSC World America.

True to her name, MSC World Asia will reflect Asian culture, art, and stunning geography with subtle design details, though the ship is scheduled for Mediterranean itineraries once she sets sail in December 2026.

The new ship will be visiting all the top ports in the Mediterranean, from Barcelona to Rome, including Marseille, Genoa, Sicily, Naples, and Valletta.

While the ship’s Mediterranean schedule is very port-heavy, as is customary for any sailings in the region, most weeks will still feature at least one day at sea to give guests plenty of time to try out all the new ship will offer.

Of course, eager travelers can also arrange a back-to-back (to-back-to-back-to-back!) sailing so they are sure to have ample time aboard the 216,700-gross ton vessel.

MSC World Asia is currently under construction at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in France. While a great deal of work remains before the ship debuts in just under 17 months, excitement is continuing to build and guests around the world are waiting for this new World-class vessel.

Can Carnival Guests Get Perfect Trivia Scores Without Cheating?

Key Aspects:

  • A recent Harry Potter trivia perfect score has once again raised accusations about players cheating.
  • John Heald has offered a poll about whether guests should swap papers to grade trivia answers.
  • Harry’s wand is, in fact, 11 inches long, which is mentioned in two different books.

Trivia is a go-to onboard activity for many cruise lines, and Carnival Cruise Line often offers specialty and themed trivias for movies, television shows, music types, and more.

One such popular trivia that often fills a lounge to overflowing is Harry Potter Trivia. With so many guests enjoying the activity and the beloved franchise, it is important to remember that only one team will win.

And if that isn’t your team, does it mean another team must have cheated? One recent guest thinks so, and reached out to Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, John Heald, to address trivia cheaters.

The incident happened on Carnival Vista while Heald was onboard for the inaugural visit to Celebration Key. While the details of the first guests at Carnival’s new private destination took top headlines, this guest was upset enough about the trivia to air their grievances.

“This morning I went to the Harry Potter trivia. I love Harry Potter, so does my wife. There were a ton of teens and families who clearly did too,” the guest explained.

“We missed only one question which was impossible to know. Unsurprisingly, a man and his teenage kids claim to have gotten every question right. They cheated! The question was how long was Harry Potter’s wand.”

The guest described how groans were heard around the lounge when the difficult question was asked. This is often the reaction to very challenging questions. But did the winning family really cheat?

“This family had a phone on their table. They were cheating. Carnival should have the papers graded by staff or by other players to stop this from happening,” the guest suggested.

The guest does not confirm if the winning family was using their phone during the trivia game, only that they happened to have one on their table.

In today’s high-tech world and with the Carnival Hub app being so important onboard, most guests do in fact carry phones with them almost all the time.

But the assertion that they must have cheated simply because they knew the length of Harry Potter’s magic wand is absurd.

Passionate fans easily know this answer, which is found on page 84 of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, when the young soon-to-be wizard is visiting Ollivander’s wand shop to buy the critical item.

“Holly and phoenix feather, eleven inches, nice and supple,” Ollivander describes as he pulls what will become Harry’s wand from the shelf.

Did you miss that reference? In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, all the Triwizard Tournament champions have their wands tested before the competition begins. On page 310, Harry reminisces about first purchasing his wand.

“This one, which was made of holly, eleven inches long, and contained a single feather from the tail of a phoenix,” he remembered.

It’s true that the wand measurement is not mentioned in the Harry Potter movies. Fans who have read the books over and over, however, wouldn’t likely have too much difficulty with the question.

As a point of pride, my family has gotten perfect Harry Potter trivia scores, without even owning a phone at the time. Our most challenging questions have included “Who is Molly Weasley’s favorite singer?” (Celestina Warbeck) and “How many staircases are in Hogwarts?” (142).

How Can Cheating Be Discouraged?

The original poster believes that having crew members grade answer sheets or exchanging papers with other guests at the end of the contest can eliminate cheating.

Heald does assure the guest that he will speak to Carnival Vista‘s entertainment staff as well as the “Mother Ship” about the issue in case more can be done.

“It is fun, but I do understand that if somebody was allegedly cheating, it can be a little bit upsetting,” he responded.

He notes, however, that the crew members running the trivia do not have time to grade papers individually. When Harry Potter trivia can easily draw 50+ players, individual grading would be impossible.

Heald also includes the idea of how to grade trivia papers as part of his daily poll, asking whether or not guests agreed that papers should be swapped so no one is grading their own answer sheet.

In less than two hours, just 2% of votes (approximately 800 votes) agreed that papers should be swapped, while 13% (more than 5,300 votes) feel such a step is not necessary, as it’s just not serious enough.

This is not the first time Heald has addressed trivia cheating, as it can be a common concern for fans of the popular activity. In July 2023, he discussed similar concerns but still emphasized that the point of the activity is just to have a little fun.

Norwegian Goes Big for 2027 With More Ships, Ports, and Overnight Stays

Key Aspects:

  • Norwegian Cruise Line ships will operate from 30 homeports around the globe.
  • Its new build, Norwegian Luna, due to debut in 2026, will sail from New York during summer 2027.
  • Several ships will offer voyages to Alaska, from Seattle, Vancouver, and Whittier.

From Bermuda to Barcelona, Scandinavia to Santorini and scores of places in between, Norwegian Cruise Line ships will call at more than 150 ports across the globe during spring and summer 2027, offering a choice of destinations designed to impress even the most discerning travelers.

The cruise line on July 23, 2025 rolled out ship deployments for 500-plus voyages in 2027, with 20 ships sailing from 30 homeports and visiting a total of 59 countries. All of the newly minted cruises have opened for sale.

The key phrase in the cruise line’s description of its latest offerings is “more,” as in more freedom, more destinations, and more experiences.

The line has designed its seasonal cruise roster, from April to October 2027, to include more than 170 overnight stays in port, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in a destination’s culture and cuisine.

A wide choice of voyage lengths caters to those seeking a quick getaway as well as those looking for a longer exploration of a particular region.

Whether guests are hopping between European cities nearly every day, taking in Alaska’s natural beauty from ships custom-built to bring the outdoors in, or kicking back on the beach with family and friends at one of our two resort-style destinations, there’s no shortage of ways to relax, explore, and create unforgettable memories, said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line.

Most of the cruise line’s Caribbean itineraries will feature calls at one of the line’s two private island destinations, Harvest Caye, in Belize, and Great Stirrup Cay, in the Bahamas.

Norwegian Cruise Line is in the process of adding significant enhancements to Great Stirrup Cay, with the updates slated to be unveiled in late 2025.

With hundreds of voyages on offer, let’s look at some of the highlights, by region and ship.

Sailing from New York to Bermuda, the cruise line’s newest ship, Norwegian Luna will sail 4- to 7-day voyages with one or two overnights at the Royal Naval Dockyard. The 3,500-guest ship is under construction at a Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and is due to enter service in April 2026.

Besides Norwegian Luna, Norwegian Breakaway will sail to Bermuda from Boston and Norwegian Pearl will operate Bermuda sailings from Philadelphia.

Highlights of the cruise line’s Caribbean offerings include weeklong Norwegian Aqua sailings first from PortMiami and then from Port Canaveral, while Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Escape sail 3- to 5-day voyages from PortMiami and Port Canaveral, respectively.

One ship, Norwegian Spirit, will be based in the South Pacific, sailing 11- to 13-day cruises between Sydney, Australia; Lautoka, Fiji; Papeete, French Polynesia, and Honolulu, and offering embarkation at various ports.

Four Norwegian Cruise Line ships will deploy to Alaska, answering the call for more so-called “coolcations.”

Three ships — Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, and Norwegian Joy will sail 7-day voyages roundtrip from Seattle, while Norwegian Jade operates 7-day voyages between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Whittier, Alaska.

Favorite ports such as Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, and Skagway are featured destinations, along with scenic cruising at various glaciers.

Europe voyages will, of course, play a key role in the cruise line’s summer 2027 line-up.

Four ships will deploy to the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Norwegian Prima will make maiden calls to Dubrovnik and Split, Croatia, and Kotor, Montenegro, and offer several Northern Europe voyages to Iceland and Norway from Southampton.

Norwegian Viva will sail the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, offering calls at classic destinations and multiple embarkation options, including Barcelona, Istanbul, Rome, and Venice.

Norwegian Sun, meanwhile, will operate voyages from Rome and Venice (Ravenna), while Norwegian Jewel sails Baltic Sea cruises between Copenhagen and Helsinki.

Ambassador Itinerary Changed Due to Unexpected Fresh Water Shortage

Key Aspects:

  • Ambition is swapping the order of two ports of call on her current sailing to take on additional fresh water supplies.
  • No onboard water conservation measures are necessary as adequate water supplies have now been arranged.
  • There is no mechanical problem with the ship’s reverse osmosis system, but that system is not operated in port due to safety and hygiene reasons.

Getting extra water on a cruise ship may not seem desirable, but in fact, ships require a great deal of water for onboard operations. When that water runs short, it can be challenging to ensure an adequate supply.

Just such a situation has arisen with Ambassador Cruise Line’s Ambition, currently sailing an 11-night Normandy and British Isles itinerary roundtrip from Newcastle. The ship departed on Saturday, July 19, 2025, but was unable to set sail with enough water for her voyage.

Guests have been kept apprised of the situation in great detail, including an itinerary shift to take on additional supplies.

“Due to events beyond our control, we were not able to load the normal volume of fresh water in Newcastle at the beginning of the cruise,” the cruise line notified guests.

“Ambition manufactures fresh water from the sea using Evaporators and Reverse Osmosis equipment, but for safety and hygiene reasons we do not use these systems in all ports and sea areas.”

Instead, the cruise line explained how additional supplies are brought onboard to supplement the fresh water supply throughout a cruise.

Because not enough water was able to be loaded at the beginning of the cruise, however, the ship faced two possibilities: either ask everyone aboard to conserve water, or to change port visits in order to load more supplies. It is the second option that will now be happening.

“To maintain standards of comfort, we have changed the order of our calls at Fowey and Portland to allow us to take on more fresh water supplies in good time,” the cruise line confirmed.

Now, Ambition will call on Portland on Friday, July 25, instead of Saturday as originally scheduled. Likewise, the calls to Fowey will be moved to Saturday instead of Friday.

“Your safety and comfort are always our top priority and this alteration will allow us to maintain normal stocks of fresh water and avoid potential restrictions,” the cruise line explained.

Those restrictions could have included options like limiting ice, reduced laundry services, closed restrooms, or other conservation measures.

Tours at both Portland and Fowey are being adjusted as needed for the new timing, and guests of any changes to their excursions.

No other port visits have been impacted. Ambition is still scheduled to visit Cherbourg on Sunday, July 27, followed by Honfleur on Monday, July 28. A day at sea will follow before debarkation at Newcastle on Wednesday, July 30 as planned.

Not the Usual Water Problem

Ambition is not the first cruise ship to have run short of fresh water. Following Carnival Spirit‘s dry dock in March 2025, the ship experienced fresh water shortages during her return transatlantic sailing. This was due to continued maintenance that may have been impacting the reverse osmosis system.

In June 2023, Carnival Elation also ran short of fresh water during a 5-night Bahamas sailing from Jacksonville, Florida and diverted to Port Canaveral to load extra supplies.

Other “water events” have happened on various cruise ships, from broken pipes to storm flooding to accidental sprinkler activations. Of course, these often involve too much water rather than too little, but each one can be a wet blanket on a cruise vacation!

My favorite? The six-deck pool overflow on Harmony of the Seas in January 2023 due to a sudden course correction. What a sight that waterfall must have been!

Celebrity Cruises Lures Guests Away From Overbooked Sailing

Key Aspects:

  • Celebrity Millennium’s 12-night voyage through Japan that embarks on March 16, 2026, has been oversold.
  • Celebrity Cruises is making tempting offers to encourage some of the booked guests to change their travel plans, including switching to a new sailing for a partial refund or cancelling their trip for a full refund and a 200% future cruise credit.
  • Guests who do not want to change their plans do not need to worry, and not everyone who volunteers to accept the offers will be approved.

Celebrity Cruises is following in its sister-company Royal Caribbean’s footsteps in how the brand is dealing with high demand during peak cruise seasons.

Throughout the summer, Royal Caribbean has made multiple hard-to-resist offers to tempt passengers to change their travel plans and voluntarily opt out of overbooked sailings.

Now, Celebrity Cruises has come out with a can’t miss offer of its own for a presumably overbooked voyage onboard Celebrity Millennium, which will be sailing through Japan in spring of 2026.

The specific cruise in question embarks from Tokyo (Yokohama), Japan, on March 16, 2026, on a 12-night sailing to Osaka, Kochi, Hiroshima, Jelu Island, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, and Shimizu.

Even though the cruise is still just under a year away, spring-time cruises to Japan often sell out because the famous cherry blossoms are in bloom and the weather is particularly pleasant.

“If your travel plans are flexible, you may be able to take advantage of our special offer,” the cruise line teased in a letter to booked guests.

The first option the more than 2,000 passengers have is to put off their cruise vacation by a year in exchange for a 50% refund of the cruise fare and a $200 onboard credit per stateroom.

Instead of sailing as planned in 2026, they would switch to the 12-night Japan cruise that embarks from Tokyo, Japan, on March 2, 2027.

The replacement voyage features calls on Osaka, Kochi, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, and Shimizu in Japan, as well as Busan, South Korea.

Alternatively, guests can cancel their booking entirely in exchange for a full refund and a 200% future cruise credit to book a different Celebrity Cruises voyage that sets sail on or before March 16, 2027.

In both cases, documented airline change fees will be reimbursed (up to $350 USD per person), as well as other non-refundable travel-related costs (up to $500 USD per stateroom).

Should Booked Guests Worry?

Especially for less experienced cruisers, receiving a letter asking them to change their plans can be a bit anxiety-inducing.

“Flights are booked and we have made arrangements with work for this trip, but now I’m curious what this email could mean. Has the cruise over sold / not sold enough tickets,” one guest, who booked the sailing as their honeymoon, asked on Reddit.

“Is there a problem with the ship? I’m worried now that the cruise will get cancelled leaving us in a difficult position closer to the time,” they continued.

Celebrity Millennium

Others worried that the cruise line would change their reservations without their approval, or that if they chose to stay, the sailing would be overly crowded.

But when the offers are this good and made this far in advance, the cruise line should not have any issues finding enough takers.

In fact, the letter suggests the cruise line expects more volunteers than they will actually need, as not everyone who expresses interest will be able to take advantage of these offers.

“Please note that this special offer is time-limited and subject to availability,” the cruise line advised.

“If you’re successful, we’ll reach out by either phone or email and send an updated booking invoice to your given email. If you haven’t heard from us by August 5, 2025, you will remain booked on your existing Celebrity Millennium Sailing.”

Guests who do not want to change their plans can ignore the invitation with no penalty or impact to their reservations.

Cruise Guests to Get Front-Row View of Historic Battleship at Galveston

Key Aspects:

  • USS Texas will be permanently berthed at Pier 15 at Port of Galveston beginning in 2026.
  • Pier 15 is between the Royal Caribbean and (upcoming) MSC Cruises terminals.
  • A museum, onboard exhibits, and tours will be part of the historic battleship’s new home.

Cruise guests setting sail from Port of Galveston will have a unique and amazing opportunity beginning in 2026 to see and experience a new ship at the port, even if they won’t be able to sail on her.

Galveston Wharves and the Battleship Texas Foundation have reached an agreement for the permanent berthing of USS Texas, the only BB-35 ship of her kind remaining and an important piece of maritime history.

The battleship, which was commissioned in 1914, will be berthed at Pier 15 as her new home once restoration work is complete and she can properly display her long history in all her glory.

“As restoration work continues across the channel, we look forward to relocating her next year and continuing our mission to create a world-class historic destination,” confirmed the Battleship Texas Foundation Group.

“The Battleship Texas … is a powerful symbol of our nation’s history and permanently berthing her to Galveston is a true honor.”

Pier 15 is between the new Royal Caribbean cruise terminal, which opened in late 2022 and the new Cruise Terminal 4 that is currently under construction for MSC Cruises and planned to open in November 2025.

This gives guests aboard both Royal Caribbean ships as well as MSC Cruises ships the unique opportunity to be berthed within feet of astonishing naval history.

USS Texas is the only remaining American battleship to have served in both World War I and World War II. She participated in the Battle of Normandy, was the first US battleship with anti-aircraft guns, and provided support during the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

The battleship is currently undergoing significant restoration just across the channel (literally 4,000 feet away) at the Gulf Copper Shipyard facility, where she has been located for repairs since August 31, 2022.

Battleship Location at Port of Galveston
Battleship Location at Port of Galveston

The agreement to confirm a permanent home for the retired naval vessel has been ongoing, though negotiations broke down in October 2024. The impact hurricanes could have on an aged ship that cannot be evacuated from the coastal port was a significant part of the concern.

Now, however, the protective system to safeguard the vessel will be re-engineered for her new location and the potential for stronger storms. Previously, USS Texas was moored at the San Jacinto Battleground, 35 miles northwest of what will become her new location at Port of Galveston.

Further work that needs to be completed before the battleship can once again receive visitors includes dredging at her upcoming location, superstructure repairs, deck replacement, repainting, and the installation of interior exhibits.

Can Cruise Guests Visit the Battleship?

Part of the reasoning for moving USS Texas is that her visitor numbers were dwindling at her previous location. It is expected, however, that she may attract twice as many (or more!) guests when she has been restored and reopened.

Cruise guests will likely be a significant part of that number as it will be very convenient to visit the historic ship before or after a sailing. In addition to the ship herself, there will also be a museum featuring educational programming, exhibits, and artifacts showcasing the ship’s more than 30 years of active service.

In addition to Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises, other cruise lines that homeport from Galveston include Disney Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Princess Cruises.

No firm date has yet been decided for USS Texas‘ grand reopening. Any weather-related delays, the extent of the restoration work, and additional funding challenges may yet delay the ship’s debut at her new home.

Bermuda Arrests Involves Four Cruise Ship Passengers

Key Aspects:

  • Four Carnival Cruise Line passengers were arrested in Kings Wharf port, Bermuda.
  • Bermuda Police Services said suspects were said to be carrying deadly drugs with intent to sell.
  • If found guilty, the guests face severe penalties under both US and Bermudian law.

Four cruise passengers aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship were arrested in Bermuda after allegedly attempting to bring a stash of illegal drugs ashore.

According to local police, the cruise line’s onboard security detained the passengers and turned them over to authorities upon the ship’s arrival in Bermuda.

Carnival Cruise Line has several ships that regularly call in Kings Wharf, Bermuda, including Carnival Pride and Carnival Sunshine with overnight calls on the island.

But the four passengers detained spent their arrival behind bars after police confirmed the group was in possession of cannabis, THC vape pens and gummies, and a package containing carfentanyl.

The police believe the passengers planned to sell the drugs while they were in port.

Acting Detective Superintendent Derrick Burns of the Bermuda Police Service highlighted the dangers of the substances found on the passengers in a statement.

“Carfentanyl is about 100 times stronger than fentanyl and was originally used to sedate large animals like elephants,” she said.

The Bermuda Police Service says its Narcotics Unit is actively investigating the case. No further details have been issued by the police or Carnival Cruise Line.

Serious Penalties May Follow

Both US and Bermudian authorities maintain strict policies regarding the possession and transport of illegal drugs but others took to social media to complain that US Customs and Border Control should have found and seized the drugs before they left the US.

“How on earth did the US miss such a huge bust on their side?” wrote one.

Still, many praised the collaborative work of the Carnival Cruise Line crew and Bermuda authorities.

“Good job, heads up for catching these criminals,” said a Bermudian local. “We don’t want any type of drugs on this little rock. Glad they seized the drugs.”

Bermuda has a zero-tolerance stance on drug importation and the cruise guests face criminal charges that can lead to heavy fines and prison time, according to the US Consulate General Bermuda.

“Many drug-related arrests of American citizen visitors are made each year, and there are several American citizens serving extensive prison sentences in Bermuda,” it said.

The detained cruise passengers are actually subject to enforcement under both jurisdictions.

In the United States, US Customs and Border Protection enforces federal laws and the Controlled Substances Import and Export Act is one such law with fines up to $5 million and prison sentences from up to 20 years to life.

Carnival Cruise Line also has a zero-tolerance policy due to the federal regulations. Not only are passengers found in possession reported to authorities, but they are also removed from the ship and banned from cruise line for life.

Said the cruise line in a statement, “We follow a zero-tolerance drug policy, as we strictly comply with all applicable laws and regulations, and we also advise our guests that they can be personally subject to local law enforcement actions.”

The passengers are also responsible for all expenses to return home with no refund for unused cruise fare.
