Royal Caribbean Goes Behind-the-Scenes at Thrill Island

Royal Caribbean International has released the sixth episode of its “Making an Icon” series, this time offering an in-depth, insider look at “Creating Thrill Island” – one of the most hotly anticipated features of the upcoming Icon of the Seas.

Billed as a “theme park adventure” on board what will be the largest cruise ship in the world, Thrill Island includes a variety of adrenaline-inducing features for all ages and much more.

What Is Thrill Island?

One of eight distinct neighborhoods on Icon of the Seas, Thrill Island is located primarily on Deck 16, and is designed as a shipwrecked island with unique decorative details to immerse guests in the adventure.

“The whole notion behind Thrill Island is its this lost island,” said Jay Schneider, Chief Product Innovation Officer for Royal Caribbean.

Distressed wood accents, a sunken boat, vibrant colors, foliage-like shade, and beach-like pathways all contribute to the overall vibe of the space, immersing guests in a fun tropical adventure.

Small “artifacts” from famed explorers such as Ferdinand Magellan, the Wright Brothers, and Amelia Earhart can also be found in the space, adding a sense of history, exploration, and connection to the thrills as guests dive in to their vacation.

Thrill Island Features

Thrill Island is the most extensive theme-park-like space aboard any cruise ship ever designed, all based on consumer research about what families and cruise travelers want to experience with respect to thrills.

“On the thrill-o-meter, we wanted to make sure we maintained a proper balance, but we also wanted to make sure we took it all the way,” said Jennifer Goswami, Director of Product Development for Royal Caribbean. “On Thrill Island, it’s really our maxed out version of what we could do from a thrill perspective on a ship.”

One of the most thrilling features of the space is the Category 6 waterpark, the largest waterpark ever at sea with 17,010 square feet of splashtastic fun. Six record-breaking waterslides offer thrills for all, from dueling mat racing slides to the tallest drop slide at sea, the first open free fall waterslide on any cruise ship, and the first family raft slides ever at sea.

Waterslides aren’t the only key features of Thrill Island, however. Crown’s Edge is a heart-pumping ropes course, skywalk experience 154 feet above the ocean with an unexpected drop leading to a zip line. This pushes the boundaries beyond the deck of the ship, putting adventurers right over the water in an area never before accessible to guests.

Thrill Island will also include classic favorites found on all Royal Caribbean ships, including the rock climbing wall, Adrenaline Peak, with five lanes to challenge. Lost Dunes is the reimagined miniature golf course with extensive theming for more fun everyone can enjoy, and the FlowRider surf simulator is found in the starboard aft corner of Thrill Island.

Together, Thrill Island offers something for all ages, ideal for multi-generational families traveling together to enjoy the ultimate cruise vacation.

“No matter what your age, you can have a great time on Thrill Island,” said Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean.

Technical Challenges

“Creating Thrill Island” doesn’t just promote the features of the adrenaline-inducing neighborhood, but also provides behind-the-scenes insights such as the engineering and construction challenges necessary to make the space a reality.

For example, two separate towers will support the massive waterslides, which has permitted longer slide designs that will reach faster speeds for even more thrilling fun.

The weight of the space has also been a concern throughout design and construction, to ensure the safety and stability of the cruise ship overall. The more weight that is added to the upper decks of a cruise ship, the more the center of mass changes for the vessel, which can impact how it maneuvers.

Furthermore, the funnel area needed to be designed with respect to wind to ensure clean, fresh air as guests enjoy their time on the open deck.

Beyond the Thrills

Thrill Island is more than just an onboard theme park, however, and includes a full range of amenities. Plentiful seating is spread throughout the space, giving all family members great vantage points to watch the fun or take a relaxing break before jumping back into the adventures.

Guests will also find delicious food and dining throughout Thrill Island, including “Desserted” for specialty milkshakes including options for kids and adults, and “Base Camp” for burgers, sandwiches, and sides.

With so much to experience, guests aboard Icon of the Seas will have more than they could ever have imagined to experience when the ship sets sail in January 2024.

Disney Cruise Line Announces New Tier for Loyal Passengers

Disney Cruise Line has finally announced the loyalty benefits for Pearl level members of its Castaway Club program. The brand new tier is being introduced in time for the cruise line’s 25th anniversary this summer, celebrating guests who have sailed 25 magical cruise vacations.

Pearl Tier Benefits Announced

Disney Cruise Line has released details of the new Pearl level of its Castaway Club loyalty program. While none of the tiers have an extensive list of benefits, the perks Disney Cruise Line provides are well worth cruising with Disney multiple times. The new benefits will begin May 1, 2023.

For Pearl level, the first new benefit is the ability to book new itineraries four days before the general public, earlier than anyone else may be able to book a Disney cruise.

This ensures the most loyal guests have the widest variety of stateroom selections, destinations, and ships to choose from, before different options begin to sell out.

Pearl level guests will also be able to book onboard activities and Port Adventures (shore excursions) 123 days prior to setting sail on a booked cruise, which is three days earlier than the next highest loyalty level at 120 days.

This applies to specialty adult dining reservations, spa services, and other popular onboard activities that frequently sell out on every sailing.

Exclusive to Pearl level is a brand new benefit. All Pearl level guests will receive a complimentary unlimited digital photo package, ensuring they are able to capture every moment of these most magical vacations.

When purchased before sailing, the unlimited digital photo package can cost from $195 (USD) to $300 and higher, depending on the length of the cruise, as longer cruises will have more photo opportunities.

Guests can print out their digital photos for personal use under a limited license agreement, but the package does not include special occasion photography services or private portrait sessions. Digital access to photos expires 45 days after the photo is taken, and files are then deleted.

In addition to these exclusive benefits, Pearl members will also receive all the benefits awarded to lower loyalty tiers, including a dedicated member phone number for information and assistance, welcome aboard gifts, special discounts, and a complimentary dinner at Palo or Palo Steakhouse.

About the Pearl Tier

The Pearl tier of Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Club has only just been introduced, and anyone who has sailed on 25 or more Disney cruises is eligible for this most elite level of loyalty. Lower tiers start at Silver (1-4 sailings) and continue with Gold (5-9 sailings) and Platinum (10-24 sailings).

Unlike other cruise lines that calculate guest loyalty based on number of days sailed and may add extra points for more expensive staterooms such as suites or private areas, Disney Cruise Line only uses the number of cruises for their loyalty calculations.

The designation “Pearl” is very appropriate for guests sailing 25 or more cruises, as it takes time and patience for an oyster to craft a single, lustrous pearl, but the beautiful result is well worth waiting for. In history and culture, pearls represent innocence, purity, and loyalty – ideal for the image of Disney Cruise Line and its most loyal guests.

Silver Anniversary at Sea

In addition to unveiling the new Pearl loyalty tier, Disney Cruise Line is gearing up for its “Silver Anniversary at Sea” celebration. Special offerings and unique activities will be available on select sailings from May through September 2023, including exclusive entertainment, onboard activities, and commemorative retail merchandise.

The celebratory amenities will be available on all five Disney ships, but may vary on different vessels and sailings. Stay tuned to Cruise Hive for more details as they are announced ahead of the anniversary festivities!

Port Canaveral Becomes World’s Busiest Passenger Cruise Port

The record has been passed and Port Canaveral has taken over from PortMiami as the world’s busiest passenger cruise port.

The news comes as the 2022 passenger totals have been released from the Florida Ports Council, and Port Canaveral tops out at over 4 million passengers, a slim margin over PortMiami’s impressive numbers.

Busy Year for Port Canaveral

While the year began slowly with cruise lines continuing to limit guest capacity for health and safety restrictions, 2022 quickly gained momentum as cruise travel dramatically rebounded.

Thanks in part to Port Canaveral’s proximity to Orlando and the faster easing of local community restrictions in that part of Florida, compared to more stringent health and safety measures in the more populous communities of South Florida, the cruise port gained a slim lead over PortMiami to become the world’s busiest passenger cruise port.

In total, 4,072,396 multi-day cruise guests moved through Port Canaveral, edging out PortMiami’s updated 4,022,544 multi-day guests, an updated number directly from the port rather than 3,988,094 from Florida Ports Council.

“We’ve always aimed to be the best cruise port in the world, but what an achievement to now be known as the busiest,” said Captain John Murray, Port Canaveral CEO. “This historic milestone is testament to the efforts of our team and cruise partners to provide a best in class experience for all cruise guests sailing from Port Canaveral.”

Multi-day cruise guests are those passengers on a voyage lasting more than one day. Single day guests, on the other hand, are sailing on vessels such as casino boats or similar entertainment sailings but do not have overnight stays. Multi-day guests can include both homeport sailings as well as day port visits.

Other Florida Cruise Ports

Florida is home to four additional cruise ship homeports: Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale just 21 miles (34 kilometers) from Port Miami; Jaxport in Jacksonville in the state’s northeastern corner; Port Tampa Bay on the west coast; and Port of Palm Beach still further north from Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

None of the other homeports comes close to the passenger traffic of either Port Canaveral or PortMiami, though they all serve different cruise lines and offer great vacation options for guests.

Port Everglades saw 1.6 million passengers in 2022, while Jaxport, Port Tampa Bay, and Port of Palm Beach totaled 90,241, 418,200, and 188,235 guests, respectively.

Port of Key West is another popular cruise port in the Sunshine State and saw 198,411 guests, though the port is not used as a homeport, only as a port of call visit.

Totals to Rise Dramatically in Years to Come

It should be noted that all Florida’s multi-day cruise port passengers combined totaled 10.5 million guests. While this is an impressive total for a year when all cruise ships were not sailing the full year and restrictions still limited passengers, it is far below the 2019 total of 17.8 million, before the pandemic shutdown halted the cruise industry.

Florida Ports Council projects that the cruise industry in Florida ports should be close to 2019 levels in 2023, with even higher totals in years to come.

Forecasts for 2027 bring Port Canaveral to 6.4 million passengers that year, with PortMiami projected to host 8.4 million. Of course, port improvements at all Florida homeports will continue in the next few years to accommodate growth, welcome more advanced ships, and provide adequate security and safety for all vessels, crew, and guests who move through the ports.

Cruise Line Acquires Former Carnival-Owned Holland America Ship

Celestyal Cruises, a renowned Greek cruise company, has acquired the former Carnival-owned Holland America Line cruise ship Ryndam and renamed it Celestyal Journey.

The company has planned a €20 million refurbishment and technical overhaul at a shipyard near Piraeus for the vessel before it enters service. The launch date of the ship remains undisclosed.

Ryndam Will Continue Sailing as Celestyal Journey

Celestyal Cruises has acquired the former Carnival Corporation-owned Holland America Line cruise ship Ryndam from previous owner Seajets. The vessel, now renamed Celestyal Journey, is 55,819 gross tons and has space for 1,258 passengers.

The company has not disclosed whether it will expand or reduce the ship’s capacity; what is clear is that it will be investing some 20 million euros in refurbishing and overhauling the cruise ship.

The newly-refurbished vessel is expected to offer a considerable increase in premium and balcony staterooms, catering to the high demand for such accommodations on all its voyages.

The acquisition marks a strategic move by Celestyal Cruises to position itself better and to take advantage of the renewed interest in cruising that is evident worldwide.

Celestyal Cruises already has a fleet of three mid-sized ships, and the addition of the Celestyal Journey will provide the company with additional capacity to meet the expected surge in demand in the coming summer, which provides a much better opportunity for investments.

In a statement, Celestyal CEO Chris Theophilides said: “While the global events of the past few years have placed our growth plans on pause, the positive industry outlook along with strong bookings for the coming season, provides Celestyal with the opportunity to recommence the process of renewing our fleet with new vessels.”

“In addition to her expansive open decks, numerous bar & dining options as well as spacious public areas and staterooms, the Celestyal Journey provides our guests with a significant increase in premium and balcony staterooms, which continue to be in high demand on all of our voyages. We look forward to welcoming her to the Celestyal fleet!”

Ryndam, Pacific Aria, Aegean Goddess, and Celestyal Journey

The Celestyal Journey was owned by Holland America Line before being transferred to P&O Australia and renamed Pacific Aria in 2015. The cruise ship sailed on her maiden voyage for Seattle-based Holland America Line in 1993.

The ship was scheduled to join Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) in May 2021 under the new name of Ida Pfeifer. However, the transaction never materialized, as CMV had filed for bankruptcy.

Seajets later acquired the Pacific Aria in 2020 as part of a buying spree from the Greek ferry operator, which also includes the Maasdam. Ryndam was laid up in Greece as the Aegean Goddess in 2020.

Seajets sold the former Maasdam (Aegean Myth) to the new French shipping company Compagnie Française de Croisières in 2022, and it will be deployed from May 2023 under its new name, Renaissance.

The Celestyal Journey is expected to join Celestyal Cruises’ fleet as soon as the full overhaul has been completed. No tentative dates have been mentioned by the cruise line.

Celestyal Cruises was founded in 1986 and has grown to become a significant player in the Greek cruise industry. The company has won several awards over the years thanks to its unique cruising approach, which provides its guests an immersive and authentic Greek experience.

New MSC Cruise Ship to be Named in Copenhagen

MSC Cruises has chosen Copenhagen, Denmark, for the naming ceremony of its newest ship, MSC Euribia. The 6,334-guest ship will be the cruise line’s second vessel powered by LNG, one of the cleanest marine fuels available.

MSC Cruises said Denmark was selected for the honor due to the country’s efforts in environmental sustainability.

MSC Euribia Ceremony Set for June 8

MSC Cruises will officially name its newest flagship, MSC Euribia, in a June 8, 2023 ceremony at Copenhagen Malmö Port, the cruise line announced on February 23.

The Meraviglia-class ship will be the 22nd vessel in the MSC Cruises fleet and is being built at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France.

LNG also powers the 6,850-guest MSC World Europa, which launched in December 2022 and is the first ship in the highly anticipated MSC World class.

LNG virtually eliminates local air pollutant emissions like sulfur oxides (99%), nitrogen oxides (85%), and particles (98%), and cuts CO2 emissions by up to 25% compared to traditional heavy fuel oil.

In addition to using LNG, the 183,500 gross ton MSC Euribia will have other advanced environmental technologies such as a ‘Baltic Standard’ wastewater treatment system, energy efficiency measures and shore power connectivity, which enables zero emissions from the ship at ports where onshore power is available.

MSC Cruises said, “MSC Euribia symbolizes the line’s commitment to protecting the oceans and this is why the port of Copenhagen was selected as the launch location – as not only does the port have a rich maritime heritage but Denmark is a country with a deep respect for the sea and commitment to sustainability.”

The Copenhagen Malmö Port itself has taken steps that will make it climate neutral by 2025.

Inaugural Season in Norway

Following her naming ceremony MSC Euribia will spend her inaugural season in Northern Europe, sailing 7-night cruises from Kiel, Germany, and Copenhagen to the Norwegian Fjords, with calls at Geiranger, Ålesund, and Flaam.

German artist Alex Flaemig is designing a Save the Sea-themed fresco for the ship’s exterior that will reflect the cruise line’s commitment to protecting and preserving the marine environment.

The ship is named after the ancient goddess Eurybia, “who harnessed the winds, weather and constellations to master the seas,” said MSC Cruises, which added that the name mirrors the cruise line’s vision to “master the deployment of state-of-the-art sustainable technologies to protect and preserve the precious marine ecosystem.”

Technology Evolving

MSC Euribia’s emissions will be further reduced as new bio and synthetic fuels become available, said the cruise line.

According to MSC Cruises, “LNG is key to the development of low carbon solutions for shipping as emerging technologies such as fuel cells can be operated with LNG until zero emissions bio-LNG or green hydrogen become available at scale.”

The line said it already is involved in developing these technologies with regulators, academia, shipyards and industry. Along with the latest advances in energy and power, MSC Euribia also will have an underwater radiated noise management system aimed at lessening vibration effects on marine life.

The MSC Euribia will feature 12 cabin categories plus the exclusive MSC Yacht Club, 10 dining venues, 21 bars and lounges, five pools, an AquaPark, and a full children’s program.

P&O Cruises Teases Details of New Ship Naming

P&O Cruises’ much-anticipated new ship, Arvia, will be officially named next month, and the cruise line has released the names of top performers who will be hosting the exciting celebration.

The ceremony will also be broadcast live, permitting cruise travel fans around the world to get a taste of the tropics and welcome the new ship to the P&O Cruises fleet.

Top Performers for Arvia Naming

Award-winning British singer Olly Murs will lead the performance lineup for the naming of the new ship Arvia on Thursday, March 16, 2023 as the Excel-class vessel officially joins the P&O Cruises fleet.

Two of the UK’s most famous broadcasters and DJs, Sara Cox and Trevor Nelson, will also be on hand to direct the event both onboard the ship and on Heywood’s Beach, along the northwest coast of Barbados.

“For our guests watching Arvia’s naming ceremony from home and from Barbados this is a real treat,” said Paul Ludlow, P&O Cruises president. “Olly, Sara, and Trevor really do make a star-studded line up which showcases the contemporary entertainment for which P&O Cruises is known.”

While Olly Murs is sure to deliver a fantastic performance from the beach, Trevor Nelson will be hosting the onboard celebration in Arvia‘s Skydome, where he will introduce the famous bottle smash moment as the ship is christened. For the moment, the new ship’s ceremonial godmother is a closely guarded secret and has not yet been announced.

Sara Cox will be hosting the beachside ceremony on Heywood’s Beach, 11 miles (18 kilometers) north of Bridgetown and near the town of Speightstown, bringing the event to even more guests and community members.

Both Nelson and Cox will be aboard Arvia for the March 11, 2023 sailing. Not only will they co-host the naming ceremony on March 16, but both DJs will offer late-night sets onboard the ship for guests to dance the night away.

Beachside Naming Ceremony

The first-of-its kind naming ceremony for Arvia will give attendees, both online and in person, a beautiful glimpse of the tropics at a time when many eager cruisers are struggling with winter weather.

“It is not often that in the depths of UK winter you can be transported to a spectacular white sand, palm-fringed beach in the Caribbean and watch a live performance from one of Britain’s best-loved stars,” said Ludlow. “It really will be a moment to remember.”

The spectacular Heywood’s Beach is one of the most picturesque beaches in Barbados and a perfect, quiet retreat preferred by many cruise travelers, with shallow reefs, calm waters, and watersports available.

This will be the cruise industry’s first-ever naming in Barbados, and celebrates the fact that the tropical destination will be one of Arvia‘s Caribbean homeports to offer getaways visiting stunning tropical paradises such as St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Kitts, Martinique, St. Lucia, and the British Virgin Islands.

The naming ceremony will also be broadcast live online, bringing even more guests to the momentous event and allowing them to share in this historic christening.

A library, cinema, escape room, miniature golf, skywalk, thermal suite, casino, and more are all part of her amazing features.

Arvia can welcome 5,200 guests, with 1,800 international crew members providing superior service, led by Captain Robert Camby.

Cruise Ship Horn – The History and Significance

Cruise ship horns have a particularly distinct sound that is very, very loud. However, you shouldn’t mistake a cruise ship’s horn for the same purpose as your car’s horn, for example.

They are an essential part of water navigation and are crucial for the safety of the ship and other ships at sea. They have a unique significance, and different blasts mean different things.

Keep reading to learn the history and significance of a cruise ship horn, and discover the meaning of the different blasts you may hear throughout your cruise.

Cruise Ship Horn History and Purpose

As maritime vessels, cruise ships subscribe to the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea and other standard regulations.

Standardized international regulations were established to codify important vessel operation procedures. Part of this standardization includes having adequate horns on large vessels, and cruise ships are no exception.

These regulations are essential to ensure good communication between all vessels for the safety of all those onboard. The main point of a cruise ship horn is to avoid a collision at all costs.

Cruise Ship Horn – Why Do They Blast Their Horns?

There are various reasons why cruise ships blast their horns, ranging from a simple salutation to other passing ships to a warning of potential danger or an emergency.

For the most part, however, most horn blasts are to communicate with other passing ships what direction the ship plans on going. This is done using various horn signals that all vessels understand.

Why Are Ship Horns So Loud?

You’re on your cruise deck relaxing and trying to get a tan when suddenly you hear the loud blaring of the horn. While this may startle you and even be annoying, there’s an important reason that cruise ship horns are so loud.

Cruise ship horns are so loud because of how big the open sea is. They act as a warning to other boats and vessels at sea. They need to be heard in cases of low visibility and in cases of emergency.

In general, you can hear cruise ship horns from up to two miles away. Cruise ships are pretty slow to stop and turn due to their enormous size, so this much space is needed as a warning to get out of another ship’s way.

Ship Horn Blasts – What Do They Mean

You may have noticed that cruise ships have several different blasts. But what do they mean? Here’s a quick look into what the horn blasts mean.

  • One short horn blast: This communicates to another ship that you intend to pass it on your port side.
  • Two short horn blasts: This communicates to another ship that you intend to pass on your starboard side.
  • Three short horn blasts: This means that you are operating in reverse, such as backing away from the dock.
  • One prolonged horn blast: This is the first blast you’ll often hear onboard your cruise, as the blast signals that a vessel is leaving the dock.
  • Five short horn blasts: This typically signals danger and is the type of blast you are least likely to hear on your ship

Aside from these reasons, your ship might also sound its horn in times of low visibility just to make its presence known.

Wrap-Up

Although cruise ship horns tend to startle and scare people onboard the ship, there’s rarely anything to worry about. In general, the ship’s captain blasts the horn signal only to communicate.

You’re more likely to hear your captain blast the ship’s horn signal for fun than you are to be in an emergency. Either way, you now know what different blasts mean so that you can be prepared for your next cruise.

Cruise Tourism in Mexico Soars to New Heights

Mexico has always been a top destination for cruise ships and their guests, and this trend continued throughout 2022. According to Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco, 7.7 million cruise ship passengers arrived at different Mexican ports last year, representing a substantial increase from the previous year.

Cozumel has the busiest cruise port in the world, which proved true again in 2022, with almost 3 million passengers visiting the popular island. However, places such as Costa Maya, Cabo San Lucas, and Ensenada have done equally well in recovering from the hardships experienced in 2020 and 2021.

Busiest Ports in Mexico for Cruise Arrivals in 2022

Cozumel and Costa Maya in Quintana Roo, Ensenada in Baja California, Cabo San Lucas in Baja California Sur, Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco, and Mazatlán in Sinaloa are the top ports that received the highest number of cruise arrivals in Mexico in 2022. These ports alone accounted for 94.6% of the cruise passengers who arrived in Mexico last year.

Cozumel, in particular, saw a significant increase in arrivals, with 1,114 ships and 2.9 million passengers in 2022, a trend it’s continuing this year. Mahahual in Quintana Roo had 462 arrivals, with 1.23 million cruise passengers.

Ensenada in Baja California received 323 cruise ships and 744,221 passengers, while Cabo San Lucas in Baja California Sur had 227 vessels arrive with a total of 540,773 tourists. Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco received 184 cruise ships with 458,319 passengers, and Mazatlán in Sinaloa had 141 arrivals and 399,926 cruise passengers.

2022 was off to a flying start in Mexico’s cruise tourism industry. By the end of May, 2.9 million cruise passengers had already visited the country—a clear indication of Mexico’s growing popularity and recovery as a cruise destination.

Throughout the year, more than 2500 cruise ship calls were made to one of Mexico’s many cruise ports. These ships arrived in different ports of Mexico, including some lesser-known ports such as Progreso, Huatulco, Acapulco, Manzanillo, and Zihuatanejo.

Mexico is home to more than 12 ports equipped to handle the arrival of cruise ships to its shores. Each port has unique attractions and experiences to offer, making them popular destinations for cruise passengers from around the world.

Some ports, like Cozumel and Puerto Vallarta, offer beautiful beaches and water activities, while others, like Ensenada, are known for their wineries and gastronomy.

Government’s Focus on Developing Tourism Sector

The Mexican government has been working hard to ensure that the country’s ports are equipped to handle the growing number of cruise ships and passengers. Many ports have undergone upgrades in recent years to accommodate larger vessels and provide better services to tourists.

The average expenditure of cruise passengers was $76.7, which is an 8.3% increase from the previous year, showing that the focus from the government is paying off.

This spending resulted in a significant economic impact on the region, particularly in the ports that received the most arrivals. The cruise industry generated a foreign exchange income of 542.7 million dollars, significantly boosting Mexico’s economy.

Despite the challenges posed by the global pause in operations during 2020 and 2021, Mexico’s tourism industry has remained resilient. Many visitors have felt confident in traveling to Mexico and enjoying all the country offers.
