Showing what the US Air Force is capable of, the 920th Rescue Wing (RQW) of the Air Force successfully executed a high-stakes medical evacuation from a cruise ship over 350 nautical miles off the eastern coast of the United States.
On May 4, 2024, the 920th Rescue Wing, Air Force Reserve Command’s only combat search and rescue wing, received an urgent request for assistance. A medical emergency onboard the cruise ship Carnival Venezia necessitated the patient to be taken off the ship and brought to shore to receive the type of care not available onboard.

Carnival Venezia had set sail from New York on April 26 for a 10-day cruise to the Bahamas and the Caribbean. After calls to Nassau, Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, and Amber Cove, the ship was underway to homeport New York when an emergency happened onboard, forcing the Captain to make a call for help.
The Air Force 920th Rescue Wing answered the call. The wing is trained and equipped to locate and recover U.S. Armed Forces personnel during both peacetime and wartime, while this is not necessarily what you would associate with a guest onboard a cruise ship, the service men and women stepped up anyway.
Based at Patrick Space Force Base in Florida, Air Force personnel quickly assembled a comprehensive rescue force comprising two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, two HC-130J Combat King II aircraft, and expert teams of combat rescue officers and pararescuemen.
Captain Dylan Gann of the 301st Rescue Squadron, who piloted one of the rescue helicopters: “Everyone in the wing mobilized with exceptional speed. By uniting our efforts, we saved crucial time, delivering life-saving assistance six hours ahead of other response teams. Our collective determination and efficiency ensured the successful rescue and transport of the individual in need.”

The entire rescue mission became a combined effort by pilots of the two helicopters and airplanes, weather experts back at the base to plot the best possible route, and flight doctors to find the right treatment facility for the patient
According to the 920th Rescue Wing, one of the most challenging aspects of the mission was the need for multiple helicopter air-to-air refuelings due to the distance between the vessel and the Air Force Base. At 350 nautical miles or 403 land miles, Carnival Venezia was out of reach of the safe flying distance that an HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter can do.
A Helicopter Air-to-Air Refueling (HAAR) involves a probe from the helicopter connecting to a drogue on the HC-130J aircraft, allowing the transfer of fuel mid-flight. This technique is important to ensure the helicopters can operate for extended periods over open water.

Upon reaching the Carnival Venezia, the mission commander assessed the situation while two HC-130Js circled overhead. The HH-60s approached the ship and lowered pararescuemen to prepare the patient and his mother for evacuation. The patient received immediate medical attention in the helicopter and while underway to the hospital.

The two helicopters and the two support aircraft flew over 1200 nautical miles to ensure the Carnival Venezia guest reached safety and received the medical care needed.

The fact that the guest was saved, is a feat in itself. While the US Coast Guard is known to perform medivacs from cruise ships regularly, this is typically done much closer to land. With the distance from land, the 920th Rescue Wing proved to be more than capable of fulfilling the role.
Carnival Venezia returned to New York City on May 6 and has since set sail on her next voyage, an 11-night cruise to St. Thomas, San Juan, Grand Turk, Amber Cove, and Half Moon Cay.
Alaska is a top sailing destination for many cruisers, and now there is a new port of call to enjoy with the opening of the Port of Klawock on the central western shore of Prince of Wales Island. The 16-acre site and deepwater port is capable of hosting large ships and is modeled after the successful destination of Icy Strait Point.
The Port of Klawock officially welcomed its first ship, Seabourn Odyssey, on Monday, May 6, 2024. Up next on the port’s schedule is a visit from Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Explorer planned for Friday, May 17. Oceania Cruises’ Oceania Regatta will also visit in June, while Oceania Riviera and Seabourn Quest each have multiple visits planned for 2025.
The port is located near the Tlingit village of Klawock, 60 miles (96 kilometers) as the crow flies west-northwest of Ketchikan, but on the opposite side of Prince of Wales Island. It was built on the site of the old pulp mill, and the space has been reused and updated to service a new industry.
This strategic location, which offers two separate scenic fjord entrances, could be an option for either northbound or southbound ships and presents a unique destination for travelers who may have visited Alaska many times.
With a population of fewer than 800 people in the village, Klawock offers unspoiled beauty and a deeply immersive experience for visitors.
A variety of activities are available, including sport fishing, totem carving, wildlife viewing, whale watching, hikes, and much more, including one of the largest Totem Parks in Alaska. Because the port is connected by a bridge to the island’s road system, a wider variety of tours exploring the island and visiting other communities are possible.
The community is also home to the oldest hatchery and first salmon cannery in Alaska, providing a unique insight into the region’s history and how traditional industries are still vital to the local way of life.

It is hoped that the addition of the port facilities will enhance the economic revival of the area, bringing new opportunities to residents and introducing visitors to local culture. In addition to the dock, the port infrastructure includes a welcome center, historical displays, retail space for local artisans, a cafe, walking trails, and a bus stop for tour access.
The Port of Klawock has been developed as a 50-50 joint venture between Alaska Native corporations Doyon, Limited and Huna Totem Corporation, ensuring local voices and input into the facility, how it operates, and future development or expansion.
Cruising to Klawock
While only five luxury cruise ships are scheduled for Klawock so far in 2024 and 2025 – with multiple visits from all five in their various seasons – it is possible that other ships may divert to the new destination if conditions are not favorable at other Alaskan ports such as Ketchikan, Juneau, or Icy Strait Point.
Cruise lines typically plan itineraries two or more years in advance, and it is likely that more ships will begin to offer Klawock as a destination. A new port of call always generates interest from frequent cruisers looking for new and exciting places to visit.

Princess Cruises is headed back to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the winter 2025-26 season, when it will deploy Grand Princess for a series of Southern Caribbean voyages. With an intense focus on port calls, the ship’s 7-day itineraries will feature just one day at sea and visits to five exotic destinations.
The homeporting of Grand Princess, a Grand-class ship with a capacity for 3,100 guests, represents the first time in more than a decade that Princess Cruises will have a seasonal presence at the San Juan Cruise Port.
Two alternating weeklong sailings from October 12, 2025 to March 29, 2026 will have only one repeat port call, Barbados, meaning that the voyages will likely appeal to cruisers looking for a 14-day vacation at sea, as back-to-back bookings will provide an exciting variety of port visits.

One itinerary calls at Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. Kitts; Dominica; Grenada; and Barbados, and the second calls at St. Thomas; St. Maarten; Antigua; St. Vincent; and Barbados. The cruises will open for sale on May 16, 2024.
“Our return to San Juan after more than a decade not only reconnects our guests with a port rich in history and charm, but further expands the variety of departure points across North America that our guests can sail from,“ said Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer for Princess Cruises.
“Puerto Rico remains one of the fastest-growing destinations in the Caribbean and continues to attract new airlift from source markets across the U.S. as well as markets in Europe and South America, which makes it a great fit for Princess,” Thornton added.
The cruise line also noted that San Juan offers great options for pre- and post-cruise add-ons.
Before the May 7, 2024 announcement that the line will deploy Grand Princess in San Juan, the ship had been scheduled to operate Australia, New Zealand, and South Pacific sailings for the 2025-26 season. The cruise line did not reveal a specific reason for the change.
Tourism officials in Puerto Rico welcomed the news that Grand Princess will return to the destination, bringing positive economic benefits to the island.
“This announcement underscores our commitment to cement San Juan as the leading homeport in the region, where guests can sail throughout the wonderful ports of the Eastern and Southern Caribbean. Furthermore, the sailings will help drive economic development for both Puerto Rico and our regional partners,” said Carlos Mercado Santiago, executive director of Puerto Rico Tourism Company.
San Juan Port In Line For Major Upgrades
The San Juan Cruise Port in February 2024 finalized its agreement with Global Ports Holding (GPH) as its new operator. As part of the pact, several improvement projects are set to get underway. Some of the upgrades could be completed in time for Grand Princess’s arrival, although a firm timeline has not yet been revealed.
The financial accord is a public-private partnership that includes a 30-year concession agreement with the Puerto Rico Ports Authority. Under the plan, about $100 million will be invested into infrastructure upgrades and repairs at the port’s Pier 4 and Pan American Piers, along with improvements to existing terminal buildings.

A second round of investments is planned after the port meets certain criteria, including a recovery to pre-pandemic cruise arrival levels. When that happens, the cruise port will raise and invest an additional $250 million to build new cruise piers and a new terminal. The new piers will accommodate the world’s largest cruise ships.
Grand Princess is an older ship that launched in 1997. One of seven vessels in the Grand-class, the ship offers seven cabin or suite categories and guest favorites such as The Sanctuary, Sportscourt, and Movies Under the Stars.
Specialty dining includes Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria, the Crown Grill steakhouse; Chef’s Table Experience; Crab Shack; and Vines Wine Bar. The ship also offers MedallionClass, a wearable device that enables conveniences such as touch-free boarding and other enhanced services.
The cruise series from San Juan is eligible for the Princess Plus and Premier inclusive packages, which offer savings on gratuities, Wi-Fi, packages, beverages, and other amenities and services.
This fall, the Disney Cruise Line fleet will be getting a spooky makeover to celebrate the spirit of the season.
As part of Disney’s “Halfway to Halloween” celebration, which kicked off on Monday, May 6, 2024, Disney Cruise Line announced that its “Halloween On the High Seas” themed cruises will officially be returning for 2024.
Throughout September and October, the cruise line is offering select sailings that are all about celebrating Halloween in a fun, family friendly way – with plenty of treats and no tricks!
The celebration will include visits from members of the Fab Five in spooky attire, as well as special appearances from rare characters like Cinderella’s wicked stepmother and stepsisters and the Sanderson Sisters, who starred in Hocus Pocus in 1993. This year, the characters are also getting new and improved Halloween costumes.

“Mickey and Minnie are both dapper and spooky in their new, batty ensembles. Never to be outdone, Donald has put together a gentleman spider costume sure to impress Daisy Duck. All of his spidery legs are ready to boogie!,” wrote Katie Martin, public relations manager at Disney Cruise Line.
This year’s festivities will also feature the return of Mickey’s Mouse-querade, a special “scare-a-bration” where everyone is invited to dress up and party with their favorite Disney pals, and a night of trick-or-treating at sea.
There will also be additional Halloween activities, such as themed crafts and movie screenings, and a plethora of Halloween-inspired drinks, desserts, and snacks for guests of all ages to indulge their sweet tooth.
Disney’s fleet will also be decorated from top to bottom, with pumpkin trees in the atrium, overlays on the porthole windows, festive lights and garlands, and classic Halloween music filling the air.
Disney’s “Halloween On The High Seas” Itineraries
Throughout September and October of 2024, there will be 35 different sailings across Disney Wish, Disney Magic, and Disney Fantasy that will be part of the “Halloween On the High Seas” celebration. The itineraries range from one to seven nights.

Disney Magic will kick off the festivities with a 4-night Bahamian cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which embarks on September 9, 2024. Throughout the sailing, Disney’s first cruise ship will call on Nassau, Bahamas, and Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, the cruise line’s new private destination that will open this summer.
On select dates throughout September and October, Disney Wish will offer 3 and 4-night Bahamas cruises round-trip from Port Canaveral, Florida. On all itineraries, the 5,555-guest ship will visit Nassau and Castaway Cay, Disney’s first private destination in the Bahamas.
Disney Fantasy, which joined the fleet in 2012, will offer a 7-night Eastern Caribbean Cruise that includes Halloween itself. The sailing, which will embark from Port Canaveral, Florida, on October 26, 2024, will call on Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Castaway Cay.
After Halloween passes, the Disney fleet will undergo another makeover to transition to “Very Merrytime” in early November, the cruise line’s Christmas celebration at sea.
When Disney Treasure sets sail on her maiden voyage to the Eastern Caribbean on December 21, 2024, she will do so with a much anticipated Haunted Mansion experience onboard.
The Haunted Mansion Parlor, which is not currently available on any other Disney cruise ship, will welcome guests with specialty spirits and spooky decor that was inspired by the beloved attraction in Disney theme parks around the world.
As part of Disney’s 2024 “Halfway To Halloween” celebration, which the company partakes in each year to announce what the upcoming spooky season will have in store, the cruise line is giving guests a more detailed look at the Haunted Mansion Parlor than it ever has before.

In never-before-seen renderings, the cruise line shared the vision for its haunted aquarium and the ghost fish that “live” inside, its eerie art collection, and special drinkware inspired by the new ghosts who will haunt this lounge.
The aquarium pays homage to an idea once had by Disney Legend Rolland “Rolly” Crump in the early stages of designing the Haunted Mansion ride. At the time, the ride was envisioned as a “Museum of the Weird” walk-through exhibit, which Crump thought should include an aquarium with ghost fish.
“As the final design took shape, many of Rolly’s initial ideas were realized throughout the attraction. However, a few of his concepts remained in the vault, living on thanks to dedicated fans and Disney historians,”wrote Jacqueline Logan, Public Relations Manager for the Disney Parks Blog.
“One such concept was a mysterious aquarium, filled with ghost fish. More than fifty years later, the sketch Rolly developed was referenced by a new generation of Disney Imagineers to create a modern ‘Aquarium with Ghost Fish’ for the Haunted Mansion Parlor,” added Logan.
Crump died in 2023 at the age of 93, and the cruise line had previously announced that the lounge would feature a Haunted Mansion-style bust of his likeness to honor his memory and career as a Disney Imagineer.
The new art gallery displays the portraits of the ghosts who have taken up residence on Disney Treasure. Big Disney fans may already recognize The Mariner, who was created by Disney Legend Marc Davis and is a familiar face from the Haunted Mansion attractions in Walt Disney World Resort and Tokyo Disney Resort.
Aquarium with Ghost Fish
Guests will also see photos of the good natured sea captain, whose life was cut short, and his enigmatic bride-to-be, who is inspired by Marc Davis’ iconic “cat lady” that is featured in the theme park attractions. Cruisers will get to learn their stories as they take in the decor and ambience of the parlor.
“The collection of works will be reminiscent of the quintessential paintings inside the Haunted Mansion attraction, mimicking the art stylings used by Disney Imagineers in 1969. The portrait gallery will also incorporate present-day technologies to allow the ghostly residents to entertain guests in new ways,” continued Logan.
The ghostly drinkware, which will be used to serve unique drinks and spirits, will also feature the likeness of The Mariner and The Bride.
Previously, the cruise line had shared that the lounge would have a special cocktail menu, some of which will feature flavored smoke and contain secret messages for guests to decode as they sip.
More New Experiences To Be Had Onboard Disney Treasure
Beyond the Haunted Mansion Parlor, there will be plenty of new happy haunts for passengers to explore once the 4,000-passenger Disney Treasure sets sail in late December.
Disney Cruise Line is known for offering Broadway-Caliber productions, and Disney Treasure will be no exception. In fact, the new addition to the fleet will offer a brand new musical called Disney: The Tale Of Moana.

But that’s not all. There will also be a Coco-themed two-night dining experience at Plaza de Coco, which includes dinner and a show. The event will pick up where the colorful 2017 Pixar movie ended with a new adventure while guests enjoy Mexican-inspired cuisine.
For thrill seekers, the 144,000-gross ton cruise ship will feature the brand new, 760-foot AquaMouse water coaster, which functions as both a water slide and roller coaster. Guests will ride on a raft through a slippery adventure inside the “Mysterious Temple of the Golden Egg.”
For couples over 18 or parents who need a break from the kids, Disney is expanding on its typical adult-only onboard venues with Sarabi, a Lion King-themed lounge named after Simba’s mother.
During the day, the lounge will be home to musical performances, comedy acts, and family game shows. But at night, it will become the wildest adult-exclusive haunt on the ship with live entertainment catered to more mature audiences.
Los Angeles, California, may be known for the glamor of Hollywood movies and the laid-back culture of Venice Beach, but the city is also home to one of the most important cruise ports on the West Coast of the United States – the Los Angeles Cruise Port.
Situated in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles, this major cruise port serves as a gateway to some of the world’s most highly visited cruise destinations, including the Mexican Riviera, Hawaii, the Panama Canal, and more.
Today, we will examine everything you need to know about the port and its two terminals, including detailed breakdowns of port facilities, terminal locations, and the best ways to get to them. We will also explore some of the nearby attractions cruise passengers can visit during their time in this famous Los Angeles cruise port.
Los Angeles Cruise Port actually consists of two dedicated cruise terminals – the Port of Los Angeles World Cruise Center and the Outer Harbor Cruise Terminal. Both terminals fall under the umbrella of the Port of Los Angeles, which is the collective name for the main seaport for the City of Los Angeles.

The Port of Los Angeles World Cruise Center is by far the larger of the two terminals. It was initially constructed to act as a passenger terminal for ferries and other passenger vessels, but it was converted into a dedicated cruise ship facility in the 1990s.

Following a significant renovation and improvement project in 2003, Los Angeles World Cruise Center emerged as the largest dedicated cruise port on the West Coast. Covering 18 acres of land and offering over 1,500 feet of space for cruise ships to dock, it remains one of the largest cruise ship ports in the United States.
The cruise port is situated in the city’s San Pedro Bay, offering clear views of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The location is ideal for cruise ships and easily accessible from some of the city’s major highways, making it ideal for visiting passengers.

Reserved for overflow and additional docking during peak cruise season, the Outer Harbor is significantly smaller than the World Cruise Center Terminal. Located directly across the water beside the Vincent Thomas Bridge, it offers far less sophisticated facilities than the state-of-the-art Los Angeles World Cruise Center, making it a much less desirable embarkation point.
Since Los Angeles World Cruise Center is the homeport for four cruise lines and Harbor Cruise Terminal is only used for spillover and situations where port traffic is overly busy, there is a much higher chance that your own cruise will depart from the former.
Still, it is worth understanding that there is a second terminal and double-checking your itinerary to make sure that your ship is actually at the Los Angeles World Cruise Center.
Number of Terminals and Piers
Los Angeles World Cruise Center features two primary terminals, each designed for different purposes. Although the port is based around a single pier, it is long enough to handle two ships at any given time. To help with organization, the pier is divided into two berths, each with its own terminal building.
Berth 91 is the first, and it is used primarily for the disembarkation process. The other, Berth 92, is used mostly for embarkation. It is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for passenger convenience, including a highly organized passenger processing area that is over 100,000 square feet in size.

The two terminal buildings at Los Angeles World Cruise Center offer everything from passenger information booths to cruise line help desks. The building at Berth 92 even features an expedited US Customs security clearance zone and baggage inspection system. It is far more efficient than you would typically expect at a cruise terminal and almost acts more like a well-organized airport than a cruise port.
The Outer Harbor Cruise Terminal operates as a single pier with basic facilities, which explains why it is only used for smaller vessels and spillover when Los Angeles World Cruise Center can’t handle the volume of cruise ships.
Terminal Facilities and Services
When the Los Angeles World Cruise Center was upgraded in 2003, the main intention was to provide passengers with a comfortable and seamless experience, so, unsurprisingly, the port boasts some awe-inspiring facilities.
Numerous well-maintained bathroom facilities are scattered throughout the port. The entire Los Angeles World Cruise Center is fully ADA-compliant, offering ramps, elevators, and parking spaces for passengers with accessibility needs. Although the port itself does not provide wheelchairs, cruise lines that use it as a home port can usually assist passengers directly. Consider contacting your cruise line ahead of time.

There are plenty of air-conditioned seating areas within the terminal buildings, which is not always true with some less advanced cruise terminals. Unfortunately, Los Angeles World Cruise Center does not offer free public Wi-Fi, but most visitors find mobile reception reasonable throughout the port.
For American travelers, you should be able to access mobile data without any issues. If you require Wi-Fi, there are several restaurants a short distance from the port that offer it.
Parking
Los Angeles World Cruise Center offers overnight parking close to the port. The parking lot is patrolled with overnight security, so your vehicle will be safe as you enjoy your cruise.
The port also operates a courtesy passenger shuttle from the parking lot to the terminals. There are several drop-off and pick-up zones, and parking is complimentary for the first hour.

Although there are over 2,500 spaces, booking ahead is a good idea, especially if you are traveling during peak season. Parking rates are $20 per day, but they can vary for oversized vehicles. Remember, this is one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, so you’ll want to plan ahead if you need overnight parking.
Getting from the Airport to the Los Angeles Cruise Port
One of the Port of Los Angeles’s main appeals is its close proximity to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
Even with Los Angeles’s notorious traffic issues, the 20-mile drive from the airport to Los Angeles World Cruise Center takes roughly 35 minutes. If you are driving yourself, use the following directions:
From LAX, take the 405 South, then the I-110 South. Exit at Harbor Boulevard., continue straight through the intersection, and turn right into the gate for Los Angeles World Cruise Center.
Transportation Options Between LAX and LA Cruise Port
As a major commuter city, LA has many transportation options for visitors. Taxis at LAX are plentiful, with flat rates of $50 and a 30 to 45-minute drive; depending on traffic, it is a straightforward option.
Rideshare services, like Uber and Lyft, are also widely available. While they are slightly cheaper, you can usually save time by just getting into the taxi line at the airport.

For those wanting a more streamlined experience, private shuttle services can be booked ahead of time through Prime-Time Shuttle and SuperShuttle. Individual cruise lines also operate direct shuttles between the airport and the terminal, but you should contact your cruise line ahead of time to ensure they are offered and available.
Although public transit exists, it can take hours and several transfers, so most cruise passengers avoid it. However, if you want to save money, you would take the Metro Line from LAX to the Green Rail Metro C Line, then transfer to the Gray Bus on the Metro J Line, which has a drop-off outside the port.
Getting from the Downtown Los Angeles to the Cruise Port
At nearly 24 miles, the downtown core of Los Angeles is a little bit further away from the cruise terminals than LAX. You also have to contend with more traffic as you commute through South Los Angeles, so you will want to give yourself at least an hour to be safe.

If you are driving, use the following directions: Get on the 110 South, exit at Harbor Blvd., continue straight, then follow the signs for the Los Angeles Cruise Center and turn right into it.
Which Cruise Lines Operate Out of the Los Angeles Cruise Port?
As mentioned, Los Angeles Cruise Port is one of the busiest in the United States, so it is no surprise that it is used by many of the most well-known cruise lines. Here is where you will find the majority of them within the port:

Summer (June to August)
Daytime temperatures tend to be between 79° and 85°F, and there is plenty of sunshine. Wear lightweight, breathable clothing, and do not forget to pack sun protection, such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
Fall (September to November)
Temperatures drop to roughly 65° to 80°F, making for mild and pleasant outdoor weather. Rainfall is limited throughout the year, so you should be OK with light layers and comfortable footwear. You may want a jacket for the evenings.

The floating maritime museum is built directly into the famous battleship that gives it its name. Visitors can learn about the ship’s storied past while exploring the decks and interior. Take a tour or explore for yourself.
The Museum offers entertainment for the whole family, including child-friendly interactive exhibits that break down naval history in ways that are enjoyable for people of all ages.
Tickets are less than $40, and it only takes a few minutes to walk from the main cruise terminal building to the entrance of the USS Iowa, so it is well worth a visit.
Wander around Point Fermin Park
While you may want to take a taxi the 3.5 miles to the park, it is a great place to take in California’s famous sunshine. Located near the southern entrance of Los Angeles Harbor, the oceanside cliffs of Point Fermin Park provide stunning views of the ocean and Santa Catalina Island.

Children will enjoy exploring the tidal pools along the waterline, and if you’re lucky, you may even be able to spot a whale. The part is also home to the Point Fermin Lighthouse and the Korean Friendship Bell, both worth seeing as you stroll around the 37-acre park.

Take a Walk to the San Pedro Fish Market and Restaurant
This iconic seafood restaurant and market is less than a mile from the Los Angeles World Cruise Center, making it easily walkable. Opened in 1956, it’s a must-see attraction for seafood lovers. Enjoy a tray of its famous fresh shrimp while taking in a view of the ocean from the numerous waterfront tables and benches.
If you’re lucky, you’ll get to experience the live music. Even if you don’t like seafood, have a cold beer on the patio and take in the atmosphere. You can also just take a quick look around, then walk up West 7th Street to the ever-popular Raffaello Ristorante for a delicious plate of pasta.

Carnival Cruise Line is celebrating 30 years of fun cruise getaways from New Orleans, with Carnival Liberty kicking off the festivities on her very first departure from her new year-round homeport.
Local leaders and Carnival VIPs were on hand for the occasion and welcomed Carnival Liberty in style to celebrate the milestone, including a live jazz band and a traditional plaque exchange to mark the ship’s maiden voyage.
Carnival’s Chief Communications Officer Chris Chiames, along with New Orleans native and former Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald, thanked the community for their support of Carnival Cruise Line through the years. Carnival first began year-round sailings from the Big Easy in 1994.

In the 30 years of partnership between the city and the cruise line, nearly 7 million passengers have set sail aboard a Carnival cruise from New Orleans.

Now with the arrival of Carnival Liberty, travelers will now have a new option from the popular Louisiana city, joining her sister ship Carnival Valor. The first sailing for the newly homeported vessel is a 6-night Western Caribbean cruise to visit Costa Maya, Belize, and Cozumel.
The 110,000-gross-ton, Conquest-class ship will be offering a variety of sailings, including 7-night Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean itineraries, with select departure dates featuring 6- or 8-night cruises. Carnival Liberty will be visiting ports of call such as Roatan, Key West, Nassau, and Jamaica, depending on the exact sailing date.
On December 1, 2024 and November 30, 2025, the ship is offering longer 14-night Carnival Journeys cruises to the Panama Canal, with visits to Aruba, Curacao, Colombia, and Costa Rica, as well as other ports along the way.

On every sailing, Carnival Liberty can welcome 2,974 guests at double occupancy, or up to 3,966 passengers if fully booked with all berths filled.
Carnival Cruise Line’s influence goes far beyond just the cruise terminal in New Orleans, however. To celebrate 30 years of departures from the city, the cruise line donated $30,000 to the Emeril Lagasse Foundation to support New Orleans’ education and culinary programs for youth.
Lagasse himself – Carnival Cruise Line’s Chief Culinary Officer – was on hand and led a tour of Carnival Liberty‘s galley for local students, helping inspire them for where culinary careers could lead.
“Even before joining the team, I knew well that Carnival has been a great partner to our incredible city,”said Lagasse.“We’ve all seen and enjoyed the growing popularity of cruising from our port over the years, which continues to bring more people here to enjoy all the rich culture our city has to offer.”
Lagasse further celebrated the cruise line’s partnership with the city by cutting a special anniversary cake, decorated in Carnival’s signature red, white, and blue colors and featuring Mardi Gras masks as accents.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is commemorating Teacher Appreciation Week in the U.S. and Canada by introducing a new Teacher Cruise Discount. The special offering provides a year-round discount on cruise fares and onboard credit exclusively for educators.
The discount will offer a 5% reduction on any NCL voyage worldwide, along with a $50 onboard credit.

NCL’s new Teacher Cruise Discount is available to a range of education professionals, including classroom teachers from PreK to 12, principals, assistant principals, school employees, and college and university professors. Eligibility for the discount requires verification through ID.me and enrollment on Norwegian’s website.
The discount is combinable with Norwegian’s Free at Sea promotion, which includes perks like specialty dining, shore excursion credits, and free airfare for the second guest.
Five Years of ‘Giving Joy’ and Nominations for Teacher Appreciation
Concurrently, the cruise line celebrates the fifth anniversary of its “Giving Joy” campaign, which honors outstanding teachers with free vacations. The contest will award 20 teachers a free vacation aboard the soon-to-launch Norwegian Aqua in 2025.
From May 6 through June 7, NCL is accepting nominations for educators across the U.S. and Canada. Educators can nominate themselves, or entries can nominate an inspiring educator. Nominations must demonstrate why an educator is a passionate, dedicated, and engaged influence on students.
Nominees and nominators are invited to share submissions on social media to help encourage votes.
The top 20 educators, as voted by the public, will be invited to a special event aboard Norwegian Aqua. This event includes a two-night inaugural event in Boston from April 4 to 6.

For the five grand prize winners, educators will receive a three-night Norwegian Aqua cruise and attend the ship’s christening celebration. Norwegian Aqua is scheduled to sail on this celebratory voyage from Miami, Florida, April 13 to 16, 2025.
Since its inception in 2019, the Giving Joy campaign has received nearly 60,000 nominations and more than 1.8 million votes. More than 250 educators have been awarded vacations, and NCL has donated more than $445,000 to support educational initiatives.
Currently under construction at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, the 156,300-gross-ton Norwegian Aqua will homeport in New York, Port Canaveral (Orlando), or Miami and will spend much of its time in the Caribbean. Recently celebrating its float out and ship’s blessing, the ship will offer roundtrip cruises from Manhattan to Bermuda, Miami to Belize and Cozumel, and longer voyages to destinations in the Bahamas, U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, and Dominican Republic from Orlando.

Royal Caribbean International is expanding its offerings for Yeshiva Week in 2025, with six available sailings on four different cruise ships from four different homeports. These sailings will feature a broader selection of kosher dining options so travelers can enjoy the cruise line’s outstanding culinary variety while adhering to their dietary requirements.
A North American phenomenon for Jewish communities and Jewish day schools, Yeshiva Week is a school holiday typically scheduled in late January and offers a break similar to the Christmas and New Year’s holiday period at public schools. It is a great opportunity for families to relax and recharge, and tropical vacations – including cruises – are immensely popular that week.
Wonder of the Seas
Royal Caribbean International offers specific kosher dining sailings during Yeshiva Week to better appeal to Jewish travelers. In 2025, four different ships from four different homeports will offer a total of six select sailings specifically to meet Kosher dining needs.
Wonder of the Seas will offer two 7-night cruises that will feature extra kosher dining options. The January 12 departure is a Western Caribbean itinerary visiting Cozumel, Roatan, and Costa Maya, while the January 19 departure is an Eastern Caribbean cruise with visits to St. Maarten and St. Thomas. Both sailings will also visit the cruise line’s private Bahamian destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay.
The 236,857-gross-ton, Oasis-class Wonder of the Seas is homeported from Port Canaveral. The ship can welcome 5,734 travelers at double occupancy, or up to 6,988 guests when fully booked with all berths filled.
Two other Oasis class ships will also offer these special sailings: Harmony of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas. Harmony of the Seas‘ January 19 departure from Galveston is a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise to Roatan, Costa Maya, and Cozumel.
Two sailings aboard Symphony of the Seas are included: the January 12 and January 19 departures. The ship will be sailing from Miami, and the January 12 cruise is a 7-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary to Cococay, San Juan, and St. Maarten. The next departure on January 19 is also a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise, but will visit CocoCay, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten.
Both ships can welcome roughly 5,500 guests at double occupancy, or just over 6,680 travelers when fully booked.
The last ship that will offer these special kosher dining sailings for Yeshiva Week is Odyssey of the Seas for a single departure, her January 16, 2025 sailing from Cape Liberty, New Jersey.
That 11-night Southern Caribbean cruise will be visiting St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Barbados, and St. Kitts, with six fully days at sea for passengers to enjoy all the outstanding features of the 167,704-gross-ton, Quantum-Ultra-class cruise ship. Odyssey of the Seas can host 4,200 guests at double occupancy, or up to 5,510 passengers when fully booked.
Dining Options Onboard
Guests on these select sailings will be able to purchase the Glatt Kosher Dining Package to ensure fresh kosher meals. The exclusive package is $80 per person, per day ($40 for kids ages 6-12, and free for children 5 and younger), and must be purchased for the entire sailing as individual night bookings are not available. An 18% gratuity will be applied to all purchases.
It must be noted that the available of the fresh kosher program is limited, and is likely to sell out long before the 2025 cruises set sail. Interested passengers should reserve their spaces as soon as possible to ensure availability.
Dinner seating time options are 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. Kosher buffets will also be available at the Solarium Bistro. Meal preparation supervision will be provided either by Rabbi Dovid Weberman or a representing rabbi as necessary.
According to Jewish News Syndicate, Weberman provides training to cruise ship crews prior to sailing so they can better understand kosher labeling and the requirements of kosher food preparation.
The appropriate kitchens are made kosher one day before each scheduled cruise to ensure proper preparation of all included food. Weberman, whose great-grandfather owned a kosher deli in New York, has also hired his own crew of translators to ensure guests on these sailings are comfortable and understand their options.
