Find Out How Huge Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas Really Is

The ship has more than 40 restaurants, bars, and lounges across eight neighborhoods, plus seven pools and nearly 30 types of cabins and suites.

Royal Caribbean brings larger-than-life adventures to avid cruisers yet again, with another massive cruise ship that crams as much fun into one floating vessel as humanly possible. After much anticipation, the latest Icon-class ship has launched.

If you’ve never traveled on an Icon-class ship before, and are wondering if these ships live up to the hype, let me assure you: They most certainly do. I’ve found these ships are exactly as advertised: jaw-droppingly huge, endlessly entertaining, and exactly where you want to be.

So how big are we talking? Let’s get into the specifics regarding how impressive Legend of the Seas’ size really is.

How Big is Legend of the Seas?

Technically, Legend of the Seas is now the biggest cruise ship in the entire world. Yes, many rank it next to its sister ships, Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas.

However, while all three of these ships have about the same gross tonnage, this third Icon-class ship is just a tiny bit longer than its sisters. Therefore, we have a new biggest ship in the world on our hands. Fun fact: It’s also the largest ship to debut in Europe ever.

The Gross Tonnage

Built at Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland, Legend of the Seas’ size in gross tonnage is 248,663 GT.

If you’re not very familiar with the ins and outs of cruise ships, you may not be familiar with this measurement. Essentially, gross tonnage reflects the ship’s internal volume, rather than its weight.

If you’re looking at lists of the biggest cruise ships in the world, you’ll find that this is the measurement most broadly used to rank ships by size.

The Stats: Length, Width, and Height

Legend of the Seas measures in at 1,196 feet long, or 364 meters. That’s more than three times the length of a football field. It will take you at least five minutes to walk the length of the ship, if you’re walking at an average pace with absolutely no stops.

If you were to prop the ship upright, it would be taller than landmarks such as the Gateway Arch, the Space Needle and the Washington Monument. And I’m not talking by a little. The ship would be about double the height of each of these landmarks, when balanced on its end.

Meanwhile, the ship is 219 feet wide, or 66 meters. The ship’s draft is 29 feet, or 9 meters.

What is draft, you ask? The draft is the vertical distance between the ship’s lowest point and the waterline. Draft is important to know because it affects the ship’s performance, including stability, speed and maneuverability. It also influences which ports the ship can visit.

The ship is 20 decks high, with 18 being open to the public.

It’s difficult to find an exact measurement in terms of how tall the ship is in feet or meters, but it’s safe to assume that this third ship in the Icon class is about the same as the others, so around 248 feet or 75.6 meters. This makes the ship, just as it is, floating in the water, about four times taller than the Great Sphinx of Giza.

Passenger and Crew Capacity Onboard

At double occupancy, this massive ship can hold 5,610 guests. Double occupancy assumes, of course, that not every single bed in every single cabin will be taken up. If that were to be the case, though, and the ship was completely sold out, the ship would hold around 7,600 passengers, on top of its 2,350 crew members.

Add it all together and you have a ship that can hold just about 10,000 people. For reference, some states allow populations to incorporate as a city with just 5,000 residents. So, when someone refers to the ship as a floating city, that’s quite an accurate assessment!

How Does Legend of the Seas’ Size Compare?

As already mentioned, this record-breaking ship is now the largest cruise ship in the world, with the other Icon-class ships following closely behind.

But how does its size compare to that of other large cruise ships from other cruise lines? Let’s take a look.

Legend of the Seas is Packed with Fun

The Icon Class definitely prioritizes fun for all ages and, because these ships are so large, they can truly deliver something for everyone.

I know, I know. When any travel or cruise writer like myself says “something for everyone,” you might tend to roll your eyes. Can a ship truly offer something for everyone? Really?

In this case, I’ll guarantee it. I’ve never been on a ship where there was so much that I wanted to do, at any given time.

Think of the ship as a Caribbean beach resort, party city, amusement park and relaxing retreat, all wrapped up into one. Meanwhile, it doesn’t really feel that crowded, like you might expect. You’ll find 40-plus restaurants, bars and lounges.

Then, there are seven pools and whirlpools. There’s the most expansive pool at sea, the Royal Bay pool, measuring in at 5,813 square feet. There are also two infinity-edge pools and an adults-only swim-up bar.

As for entertainment, you’ll choose between visiting the theater for an iteration of Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”; the AquaTheater for aerialists’ death-defying feats and a 55-foot waterfall; and Absolute Zero, the largest ice arena at sea.

And that’s just the start. You’ll also find 46 musicians and comedians hard at work across this ship.

Organization With Neighborhoods

As is the case with all of Royal Caribbean’s ships, Legend of the Seas is broken down into neighborhoods. The Icon Class introduced a few new neighborhoods to the cruise line, and today you’ll find eight across the Icon-class ships’ decks. All of them feature either some kind of first-at-sea element or an element that’s notable due to its size.

Chill Island

Chill Island stretches out over Decks 15 and 17 and includes four of the ship’s seven pools, as well as the buffet and a few other restaurants. The views aren’t half-bad either.

Surfside

Surfside is a family-focused neighborhood that first premiered on Icon of the Seas. I really love that now there’s a whole portion of the ship dedicated to families with younger kids. It benefits both the families who want kid-focused amenities and fun, as well as adults who would rather avoid having children running underfoot.

In addition to splash areas, the arcade and carousel, there are also a few dining options here.

The Hideaway

In contrast, The Hideaway is the adults-only neighborhood on the ship. If that name sounds familiar, it may be because Royal Caribbean has an adults-only beach on its private island in the Bahamas, also called The Hideaway, which opened in 2024.

On the ship’s aft, The Hideaway neighborhood features a suspended infinity pool, a favorite feature of mine, a bar and other spots to kick back and enjoy the view and some music.

AquaDome

On Decks 14 and 15, the AquaDome sits on the opposite end of Legend of the Seas and provides 220-degree ocean views, entertainment in the evening, food stands in the AquaDome market, and more.

Thrill Island

This is the amusement park-style portion of the ship. On Decks 15 and 17, you’ll find the largest waterpark at sea, called Category 6, mini golf, rock climbing, a surfing simulator and Crown’s Edge, an attraction that’s basically a skywalk and ropes course that takes you out over the edge of the ship.

As much as I’m a fan of shiny, new attractions on cruise ships, Crown’s Edge was a hard no from me.

Central Park

One of my favorite neighborhoods on any Royal Caribbean ship, Central Park is a lush oasis across Deck 8. A garden-set destination, it’s decked out with 33,000 total plants, inclusive of four living plant walls. Plus, I love the walk-up window for sushi, Izumi in the Park, and the walk-up bar for Champagne, Bubbles.

The Royal Promenade

This eye-catching dining, drinking and mingling hub connects you to restaurants, bars and lounges, the theater and shopping. With so much to do over the neighborhood’s two decks, chances are likely that you’ll end up spending a lot of time here.

Easily one of the first things you’ll see? The Pearl, the world’s largest kinetic art sculpture that sits right in the center of it all.

The Suite Neighborhood

Lastly, there is the Suite Neighborhood, which is exactly what it sounds like: home to the ship’s suites and a variety of venues and spaces that are only accessible to suite guests.

Accommodations

And that gets us into staterooms! There are a whopping 29 types of accommodations aboard Legend of the Seas. Many of these are the same you’ll find on Icon of the Seas, but no less impressive.

A lot of the accommodations options are quite large, and can easily fit four or more cruisers.

The Ultimate Family Townhouse is one of the highlights, fitting eight cruisers across an expanse of 1,772 square feet. That’s literally larger than a lot of cruisers’ houses. It features its own in-suite slide, wrap-around terrace, three full bathrooms, a cinema, dining room and kitchenette, across three levels.

If you don’t need quite that much space, maybe opt for the Family Infinite Ocean View Balcony room, which has a bunk space, split bathroom and gorgeous views. It can sleep up to six guests.

Final Thoughts

I’ve loved the Icon Class ever since Icon of the Seas’ debut and Legend of the Seas is no exception to the rule. I can’t wait until 2027, when the next ship in the class, Hero of the Seas debuts, to see how Royal Caribbean will just continue to impress me.

If you want to experience a larger-than-life ship where you really don’t even need to step off in port in order to have a great time, this ship is sure to delight you.

That said, that does relate to one small caveat that I’d be remiss not to mention. This ship’s initial itineraries include Rome and Barcelona. Some worry that the busy European itineraries won’t allow for cruisers to balance fun and relaxation on the ship with exploring in port.

As such, if you look at the first itineraries and have those same fears, and want to experience the ship to the fullest without worrying about in-port fun, wait to cruise until the ship repositions to Fort Lauderdale.

Virgin Voyages Names Amsterdam Homeport for First-Ever Scandinavia and Baltic Season

Virgin Voyages has announced six new sailings for its first-ever Scandinavia and Baltics season.
The 110,000 gross-ton Valiant Lady will sail from Amsterdam, a new homeport for the cruise line.
The cruise line is also expanding its popular Summer Season Pass to include the new itineraries.

Virgin Voyages is heading north with six new sailings beginning in summer 2028. The adults-only cruise line announced on Tuesday its first-ever Scandinavia and Baltics season aboard Valiant Lady.

The 110,000 gross-ton vessel, which just completed a two-week dry dock renovation, will sail from Amsterdam on four separate seven- to 12-night itineraries. Amsterdam is also a brand new homeport for the cruise line.

The first sailing of this new season is a twelve-night Scandinavia and Stockholm itinerary from July 19, 2028 through July 31, 2028. This sailing will depart from Amsterdam and visit Oslo, Copenhagen, Gdańsk, Stockholm, Berlin, and Aarhus.

Next up is a seven-night Norwegian Fjords itinerary from July 31 to August 7, 2028. Sailing again from Amsterdam, this itinerary will visit Molde, Nordfjordeid, Flåm, and Bergen.

After that, the cruise line will offer a seven-night Scandinavia and Hamburg itinerary from August 7 through August 14, 2028. This sailing will visit Oslo, Copenhagen, and Hamburg from Amsterdam.

Last, but not least, is an eleven-night Arctic Circle and Norwegian Fjords sailing from Amsterdam August 14 through August 25, 2028. This voyage will visit Tromsø, Honningsvåg, Trondheim, Åndalsnes, and Olden. This final sailing will be capped off with a marquee Arctic Circle crossing where guests can experience the 24-hour sun with a midnight sun deck party.

“Northern Europe felt like the right next step,” said Nirmal Saverimuttu, CEO of Virgin Voyages. “We’ve built these voyages around the kinds of experiences that make people fall in love with a destination, from the fjords and Baltic capitals to sailing beneath the midnight sun.”

Bookending these new itineraries are two ten-night repositioning cruises. The first heads to the new homeport of Amsterdam from Barcelona on July 9, 2028. This cruise stops in Casablanca, Lisbon, La Coruña, and Cherbourg.

The second crossing, following the new northern itineraries, departs from Amsterdam on August 25, 2028. This sailing hits all the same stops in reverse, but swaps Casablanca for a closing call in Tangier.

Virgin Continues Growing and Expanding Their Offerings

These sailings represent a collection of firsts for the cruise line. Oslo, Copenhagen, Gdańsk, Stockholm, Berlin, Aarhus, Molde, Nordfjordeid, Flåm, Tromsø, Honningsvåg, Trondheim, Åndalsnes, Olden, and Cherbourg are all brand new ports for Virgin Voyages.

Bookings for these new cruises open August 14, 2026. Virgin Voyages expects suites and balcony cabins on the 2,770-passenger-capacity Valiant Lady to sell out quickly. Virgin Voyages has grown in popularity in recent years. Earlier this year, Cruise Hive reported on the highest booking month in the cruise line’s history.

This popularity and growth are further exemplified by the debut of its fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, in 2025. Signifying another first for the cruise line, the 110,00 gross ton ship embarked on its first-ever Alaska season in May 2026. These new northern sailings mark another significant expansion for Virgin Voyages.

Virgin Voyages’ Summer Pass Expands To Northern Itineraries

With these brand new itineraries, Virgin Voyages has also renewed its popular Summer Season Pass for 2028 to include the new voyages. The pass, first introduced in 2024, saw high demand shortly after launch. It has since become a popular way for cruisers to experience the brand’s Mediterranean itineraries.

Now, the cruise line has expanded this pass to include the new Scandinavian itineraries. The pass allows guests to experience all four new itineraries back-to-back for one price. For the 2026 season, the Summer Season Pass prices ranged from $26,000 up to $38,000 depending on the time window.

Pricing for the 2028 season has not been announced yet, but will be on August 14, when the new itineraries officially open for booking. Summer Season Pass holders booking the new northern itineraries will receive a number of additional benefits.

Benefits Summer Season Pass holders can expect include a Central Sea Terrace cabin, priority boarding, upgraded WiFi, complimentary excursions, and a welcome package from Virgin Voyages.

While these passes come with a hefty price tag, many cruisers feel the benefits and value are worth it. The pass has completely sold out in previous years for the cruise line’s Mediterranean seasons.

Royal Caribbean Ship Drops Bonaire, Adds Rare Colombia Port

The “ABC” itinerary that visits Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao is a highly coveted schedule for cruise travelers, but guests onboard one upcoming sailing of Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas will now be missing a letter in their cruise vacation. A substitute port has been added instead, giving them a rare port visit opportunity.

Booked guests on the ship’s Saturday, January 23, 2027 sailing have received notification of the itinerary change for their 7-night roundtrip sailing from Colon, Panama.

“On Day 3, we’ll now visit Santa Marta, Colombia instead of a Sea Day, arriving at 8:00 AM and departing at 5:00 PM,” the email noted. “As a result, we’ll enjoy our Sea Day the following day in place of our previously scheduled visit to Kralendijk, Bonaire.”

The ship’s departure from Colon is unchanged, as is the first port visit scheduled for Cartagena, Colombia on Sunday, January 24.

Now, the 1,992-guest vessel will visit the second port in Colombia the very next day, on Monday, January 25. A day at sea will follow, which was to have been the visit to Bonaire.

The stops in Willemstad, Curacao and Oranjestad, Aruba on January 27 and 28, respectively, are unchanged. Similarly, the ship’s return to Colon for debarkation on Saturday, January 30 is also unchanged.

Royal Caribbean has noted that any pre-paid shore tours booked through the cruise line for Bonaire will be automatically cancelled and refunded back to the original form of payment.

Why Is Bonaire Dropped?

No exact reasoning for the schedule change has been confirmed. Royal Caribbean only notes that “from time to time, updates are necessary as we finalize scheduling, port arrangements, and operational details.”

Grandeur of the Seas was to have been the only vessel docked in Bonaire on Tuesday, January 26, so port crowding at that destination is not impacting this particular itinerary. It is possible that maintenance, dredging, construction, or other non-cruise port traffic may be causing the schedule change.

Bonaire is also not listed under any elevated US Travel Advisories, only a “Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions” advisory, so the change is not due to safety or security concerns.

The Dutch Caribbean island is the most distant on the itinerary, however, at more than 800 miles from the ship’s Colon homeport. Cruise lines will occasionally adjust itineraries to improve fuel efficiency and conservation, which could cancel distant destinations.

Because Grandeur of the Seas is still visiting Curacao, however, this explanation is also unlikely. Willemstad and Kralendijk are just 42 miles apart, hardly worth a fuel savings change.

Guest feedback, port taxes, shore tour availability, and other factors are all part of itinerary refinements.

Cruise Hive regularly reports on similar itinerary changes, most recently aboard Royal Caribbean’s largest and newest ship, Legend of the Seas. Staying informed on such changes can help guests confidently plan their cruise vacations.

Visiting Santa Marta

While some guests may be understandably disappointed in this change, the opportunity to explore another port in Colombia is a rare option.

Founded in 1525, Santa Marta, Colombia, is the second-oldest city in South America and offers a rich history for visitors to explore, including being the place of death of Simón Bolívar.

It is not, however, a frequently visited cruise port. In January 2027, only three other ships are scheduled for Santa Marta: Oceania Marina, Ambassador Cruise Lines’ Ambience, and Star Clippers’ Star Clipper.

Though she is the oldest and smallest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet, the 73,817-gross-ton Grandeur of the Seas will still be the largest ship to visit the city that month.

Royal Caribbean is planning new shore tours for the destination that will be available for guests to book through the Royal Caribbean app and the cruise line’s website in the coming days.

Royal Caribbean’s Newest Ship Forced to Make Last-Minute Port Cancellation

Royal Caribbean has not confirmed the reason behind the change, but current guests believe weather is to blame.

A last-minute itinerary change is rocking the boat for Royal Caribbean’s newest addition.

Passengers who are currently onboard Legend of the Seas for an 8-night sailing from Rome, Italy, to Barcelona, Spain, have reported that the planned call to Naples, Italy, on July 28, 2026, has been unexpectedly cancelled.

Cruise tracking data confirms that the 248,663-gross ton ship has turned around and is now sailing away from Naples.

“8 hours earlier we received a notification that we would not be stopping in Naples. We had booked and paid for the tours,” one of the frustrated passengers posted on Facebook.

“I am on Legend of the Seas and it is 11:45 pm and they canceled our port stop at Naples tomorrow with no warning. We had booked a very expensive day and it is all lost,” another shared on Reddit.

For context, Royal Caribbean will typically refund guests for any cancelled shore excursions that were booked directly through the cruise line.

However, guests who booked with independent tour providers are subject to the outside companies’ cancellation policies.

Reasons for the Sudden Itinerary Change

Royal Caribbean has not publicly commented on the itinerary change, but current guests onboard the 5,610-guest mega-ship have said that weather may be to blame.

“Rough waters, Italian authorities won’t allow us to dock,” one guest commented as a brief explanation.

According to marine forecasts, the port is expecting winds of around 13 knots when the Icon-class ship was scheduled to arrive at around 7 a.m. on July 28, which is nothing a ship of this size can’t handle.

However, gusts of 32 knots are also expected, which is when things start to get dicey. Strong winds increase the likelihood of potential collisions with port infrastructure or other vessels in the vicinity.

Adding to the confusion, some guests thought that there was a ban against the Royal Caribbean ship in Naples because of how the itinerary change was explained.

“The captain said there was a ban against the ship? Or is that just the hallway rumor for why the stop was cancelled,” one cruiser asked.

“It is not a rumor. I am on the boat and the Captain came on the PA and that is what he said,” a current guest replied.

While it’s possible that port authorities blocked this specific visit due to potentially dangerous conditions, there are no cruise bans in Naples.

In fact, Legend of the Seas is scheduled to visit Naples four more times in August, with calls scheduled for August 7, August 14, August 21, and August 28.

What’s Replacing Naples?

Per current passengers, the ship didn’t skip Naples without another destination in mind. Guests have been told that they will now be spending the day in the Provence region of France.

“Unfortunately we are heading for Provence, France instead. We will definitely be visiting Italy in the future,” one passenger commented.

“We are almost there and will turn around to Marseille,” another passenger said.

This also isn’t the first time that this itinerary had been adjusted. Cruise Hive previously reported that this sailing, which embarked on July 25, was updated due to operational adjustments.

Most of the original ports remained on the itinerary and were reordered, aside from Alicante, which was replaced with a visit to La Spezia (Florence/Pisa).

The visit to La Spezia already happened on July 26, with the final port calls in Palma de Mallorca and Malaga, Spain, expected to occur as scheduled on July 30 and July 31.

Disembarkation will take place on the morning of August 2, 2026, in Barcelona.

Residential Cruise Line Confirms Second Ship for 2029

Villa Vie Residences has announced a second residential cruise ship joining its fleet.
The new ship, Villa Vie Legacy, will be unveiled during a special two-year anniversary event later this year, and will launch in early 2029.
The cruise line has also expanded and introduced programs to entice potential customers of the new ship.

Residential cruise line, Villa Vie Residences, has officially announced its second residential cruise ship. The new ship, to be named Villa Vie Legacy, is set to enter service in early 2029. Legacy will be officially unveiled during Villa Vie Odyssey’s “Two-Year Sailaversary Celebration” later this year.

Details of the new ship are currently slim, however Villa Vie Residences promises a more luxurious, premium offering compared to its first residential ship. Legacy is expected to offer 50% larger residences compared to Odyssey, as well as expanded dining venues, larger public spaces, and enhanced wellness facilities.

It’s unknown at this time whether the new ship will be constructed from scratch, or renovated from an existing ship. Their first vessel, the 24,344-gross-ton Villa Vie Odyssey, was originally purchased from Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines in 2023.

More details, renderings, and itineraries for Legacy are expected to be revealed at the ship’s unveiling later this year. It seems that Legacy is just the first step in a much wider plan for Villa Vie Residences. Mike Petterson, the cruise line’s founder, alluded to a larger fleet expansion in the future.

“Our objective isn’t simply to build another ship,” said Petterson. “It’s to build a fleet that gives residents more choice while rewarding those who believed in this vision early. Legacy is the first step in that future.”

Additionally, Villa Vie Residences is offering existing residents an interesting option to explore the new ship. As a residential cruise line, Villa Vie operates a bit differently than most cruises, and trying out a new ship isn’t as simple as buying a ticket. These world cruises operate more like floating condos, where residents onboard directly own, lease, or rent their cabins.

Ownership costs are expected to average 30% higher on Legacy than Odyssey, presenting a difficult choice for current lifetime residents who may be interested in the new ship. With that in mind, Villa Vie has expanded its lifetime, all-inclusive Endless Horizons program.

This program offers guests perpetual, lifetime travel in a guaranteed outside cabin. Additionally, all meals and access to all activities onboard are provided for a one-time lump sum starting at $349,999 for single occupancy.

Endless Horizons is now expanding to Legacy. Existing and future program participants will automatically receive permanent residency rights aboard the new ship when she launches.

In addition to the expansion of the Endless Horizons program, the cruise line is introducing what they call the Legacy Bridge program. This new program will only be available to the first 24 new ownership purchases made on or before September 30, 2026. Legacy Bridge would grant immediate residency aboard Villa Vie Odyssey.

It will also grant a guaranteed right to transition to Villa Vie Legacy at the time of her launch for no additional cost. Time will tell if these incentives will be enough to entice potential lifetime cruisers.

Villa Vie Residences’ Rocky Journey So Far

The announcement of the new ship comes nearly two years after the company’s first residential cruise ship, Villa Vie Odyssey, first set sail in October 2024.

The ship was originally constructed as Crown Dynasty for Crown Cruise Line in 1993. She was subsequently transferred to several different cruise lines over the years, including Cunard Line, Majesty Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Commodore Cruise Line. She then landed with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines in 2001 as Braemar.

Villa Vie Residences purchased Braemar in 2023, beginning a multi-million-dollar renovation to transform her into its first residential ship. The eventual launch of Odyssey got off to a rocky start, however.

Cruise Hive covered the widespread controversy that surrounded seemingly endless delays that pushed her launch date from May 2024 all the way to October. Low initial sales then prompted the cruise line to expand its offerings with trial cruises and new ownership plans.

Then, the ship faced another setback when she failed her first CDC inspection in July 2025. This inspection uncovered 44 total health and safety violations involving food, refrigeration, housekeeping, and pools.

However, Villa Vie Residences has since recovered from these early setbacks. The cruise line now reports that more than 85% of the available residences onboard have now been sold.

“When we launched Odyssey, we set out to prove that residential cruising wasn’t just possible—it was sustainable,” said Mike Petterson. “Two years later, with Odyssey more than 85% sold, we’ve reached an exciting milestone.

Villa Vie Odyssey operates a three-and-a-half-year continuous world cruise spanning 425 destinations across 147 countries. She is currently sailing around Southeast Asia, exploring Island Archipelagos, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

With two years of experience operating residential world cruises under its belt, perhaps Villa Vie Residences can avoid the early setbacks faced by Odyssey with its newest ship.

An intense moment unfolded on a Maltese-flagged cruise ship midday on Friday, July 24, 2026. According to Greek news outlet Argolida Planet, reporting from information provided by the Spetses Port Authority, a Filipino crew member lost his balance and fell around 3 meters (approximately 10 feet) onboard the ship.

The incident occurred and was confirmed while the ship was anchored off the coast of Spetses Island in Greece, about 47 nautical miles from the popular cruise port of Piraeus. The 43-year-old man, who was serving as the ship’s helmsman, suffered serious head and spinal injuries as a result of the fall.

Other crew members jumped into action and administered first aid onboard. He was then transported to the port facilities at Kosta Argolida, about 1.7 nautical miles from Spetses.

Once in Kosta Argolida, the man was rushed 82 kilometers (about 50 miles) by ambulance by Greece’s official emergency transportation service, EKAB, to the General Hospital of Nafplio, to undergo additional examinations and treatment. The current state of recovery for the crew member is unknown.

While it is currently unknown which cruise ship the fall occurred on, several Maltese-flagged cruise ships were sailing in the region on Friday, including Marella Voyager, Marella Discovery, Star Flyer, and Sea Cloud 2.

One of the more likely candidate ships is Star Flyer, which was visiting Hydra Island on July 24, just 19 nautical miles from Spetses, on the sixth day of her seven-day, round-trip Southern Cyclades cruise from Piraeus.

Star Flyer, operated by Star Clippers, is also a traditional four-masted sailing ship, without some of the features of more modern cruise ships, which may explain how such a fall could occur onboard. It is important to reiterate, however, that the specific ship involved has not been confirmed.

Weather does not appear to be a factor in the fall. According to Weather Underground‘s recent history for the region, wind speeds were only at around five miles per hour and skies were clear on the day in question. The incident is currently under investigation by port authorities to determine how exactly the workplace accident occurred.

Other Recent Cruise Ship Accidents in Greece

It’s been a difficult year for cruise ship accidents, with Greece seeing some particularly noteworthy cases. For instance, Cruise Hive reported on another fall in Corfu in late June, when the mooring lines of a cruise ship broke, causing a female guest to fall from the gangway, sustaining minor injuries. This resulted in the arrest of the ship’s captain.

Earlier in May, aboard Enchanted Princess, a burst pipe caused intense flooding across two decks of the ship, while she was docked in Santorini. Most recently, Greek authorities opened an investigation after a 62-year-old passenger was found deceased in her stateroom aboard Oceania Regatta, as the ship approached Santorini.

Serious accidents onboard cruise ships are rare, and cruise lines are well-equipped to deal with them as they arise, from onboard doctors and medical professionals to specific protocols for handling overboard situations and relationships with local coast guards around the world.

According to local outlet Faro de Vigo, a female crew member became ill on Friday, July 24, around the time the Disney ship arrived in Vigo, Spain.

She was initially treated onboard, where she allegedly told the medical staff that her water bottle had been tampered with. The Argentinian national was then transported to Fátima Hospital for further treatment.

After being discharged from the local hospital, the crew member filed a complaint with Spain’s National Police claiming that she had been poisoned. She also identified a fellow crew member as the potential suspect.

At this time, the crew members’ identities have been kept private, and it’s unclear which roles they filled onboard.

An Investigation Is Underway

Upon learning of the alleged poisoning, Spain’s Civil Guard boarded the 129,690-gross ton Disney Dream to begin an investigation. However, it’s unclear if the Civil Guard or the National Police will lead the investigation going forward.

As part of this process, the water bottle in question has been taken by authorities so that the contents could be examined and officials could determine what substance, if any, was present.

The report says it’s believed that the substance may have been chlorine, but this has not been officially confirmed by laboratory testing.

The crew member would have had access to chlorine, as it is used to sanitize swimming pools, hot tubs, and even the tap water supply onboard the DCL ship.

The small amounts of chlorine used to treat pool water and the fresh water supply aren’t dangerous. However, MedlinePlus states that drinking or inhaling high amounts can cause the chlorine to react with moisture within the body to form highly corrosive acids.

At this time, the investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.

Disney Cruise Line has not publicly commented on the situation, but has a strict zero-tolerance policy against any crime or violence that occurs on its ships.

Disney Dream Continues Normal Operations

The alleged poisoning occurred during a 7-night, one-way sailing from Barcelona, Spain, to Southampton, UK, which disembarked on time on July 27, 2026. Per cruise tracking data, the investigation did not impact the now-concluded itinerary.

Also on July 27, the 4,000-guest ship is setting sail on a 7-night round-trip sailing to the Norwegian Fjords, which includes visits to Rotterdam, Maloy, Alesund, and Bergen.

The vessel will continue to homeport in Southampton until September 14, when she repositions to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This will be her homeport until mid-April 2027, from where she will offer sailings to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

Guests who have booked the popular “Mystical Wells” tour to explore the famed landmarks in Sintra, Portugal will now need to rely on public transportation rather than a private tour bus to enjoy their excursion from Lisbon, even though they’ve booked the tour through Royal Caribbean.

The cruise line has reached out to guests who have booked the tour to inform them of the change and how it will be managed.

“Due to new regulations not allowing commercial buses into the center of Sintra, guests will now need to take a public bus between the parking lot and the city center,” the notification explained. “A guide will pay for the bus directly and this extra fee is included in the rate of the tour.”

Because of the transportation shuffle, the tour’s length is now expected to be five hours rather than the previously published four hours.

This could have an impact on guests who may have planned multiple tours during their visit to Lisbon. Similarly, guests who may have additional plans on the same day, such as specialty dining reservations or spa treatments, will want to be aware of the change if they need to make adjustments to their schedule.

Royal Caribbean does note that “all other tour content will remain the same.” This means no elements of the popular tour are changed to accommodate the longer time and guests will still receive the full tour experience.

The notification was sent to guests booked on Liberty of the Seas and likely applies to all of the ship’s forthcoming visits. Liberty of the Seas is currently homeported from Southampton and is offering both Western Europe and Norwegian fjord sailings through mid-October.

Because this change is due to regulations in Sintra that went into effect on July 8, 2027, all tours visiting the area are likely impacted regardless of specific ship or exact cruise line. This is also likely impacting private tours from land-based companies, not just cruise guests.

Designated areas have also been added for ride-hailing services such as ride shares and taxis, which will impact any cruise guests who may be planning to explore the area independently.

Ultimately, the purpose of the change is to “improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and provide a more comfortable visiting experience for residents, workers and visitors,” including cruise guests.

Cruise lines visiting Lisbon in the coming weeks include Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, MSC Cruises, TUI Cruises, and Virgin Voyages.

How Will Guests Use Public Transportation for a Group Tour?

No details are yet offered on how the logistics of using public transportation for the tour may work. For example, if a Royal Caribbean ship tour group has 25 guests, what will happen if a public bus only has seats available for 15 at the time of the tour?

It does appear that a guide will accompany the group on the public bus because “a guide will pay for the bus directly” but delays or other difficulties may be possible as the shift is implemented.

Other potential impacts to the ship-booked tours could be changes in price related to the public bus fares or other transportation logistics, as well as possible changes in group size or tour availability.

If booked guests prefer not to take the excursion due to this change, they can contact the shore tour desk for alternatives.

The “Mystical Wells” tour is a chance to explore what Royal Caribbean describes as “two of Portugal’s most enigmatic landmarks” at the Quinta da Regaleira estate.

A scenic drive starts the tour, and while at the estate, a knowledgeable guide leads guests through the remarkable landscape, including descending the spiral wells and their winding stone staircases.

“Hidden grottoes, labyrinthine passageways, and lush gardens that whisper secrets of alchemy and ancient rites” are described as part of the intriguing tour.

The tour is described as a strenuous excursion and is not recommended for guests with mobility limitations or cardiac, respiratory, or orthopedic issues. Guests must be at least three years old to participate.

Investigation Underway in Greece After Guest Found Dead in Cruise Ship Cabin

What should have been a day to enjoy the stunning destination of Santorini started with a tragic discovery aboard Oceania Regatta when a 62-year-old woman was found deceased in her stateroom as the 30,277-gross-ton ship approached the port.

According to the Greek Coast Guard, port authorities were notified of the incident on Sunday morning, July 26, 2026. Because Santorini is a tender port, a small boat was used to bring the woman ashore.

The woman was then transported to the General Hospital of Thira, just one mile from the center of town. She was officially pronounced deceased, and an investigation was begun, as is standard procedure.

Authorities ordered the body to be transferred to the Forensic Medical Service of Piraeus for an autopsy to help determine the official cause of death. There is no indication at this time that foul play may be suspected, but undoubtedly all possibilities will be investigated.

The woman’s name has not been released, but she was noted to be a UK citizen. It is not uncommon for cruise lines and authorities to withhold personal information to protect the privacy of the individual, their traveling companions, and family members at such a distressing time.

Which Cruise Ship Was Involved?

Authorities have not officially identified which cruise ship the woman was sailing aboard, but only three vessels were anchored off Santorini on Sunday: Celebrity Infinity, Oceania Regatta, and Celestyal Discovery.

The ship was noted to be flagged in the Marshall Islands, which confirms the vessel as Oceania Regatta. Celebrity Infinity is flagged in Malta, while Celestyal Discovery is flagged in Italy.

Oceania Regatta is currently sailing a 14-night one-way itinerary from Monte Carlo to Istanbul. The ship departed Monte Carlo on Friday, July 17 and has already visited destinations in Italy, Malta, Croatia, Montenegro, and Greece.

The July 26 visit to Santorini was the ship’s third port in Greece, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. that day. There appears to have been no delay to the ship’s itinerary and the vessel moved on to her next port visit in Mykonos as planned on Monday, July 27.

Additional stops at Izmir and Bozcaada Island in Turkey will follow before Oceania Regatta arrives in Istanbul on Thursday, July 30 for an overnight stay prior to debarkation on Friday, July 31.

Oceania Regatta first entered service in 1998 with the now-defunct Renaissance Cruises. She was transferred to Oceania Cruises in 2003.

The luxury vessel can welcome 684 guests at double occupancy or up to 824 guests when fully booked with all berths filled. Also onboard are roughly 385 international crew members to provide exceptional service.

The ship will conclude her service with Oceania Cruises in August, at which time she is being chartered for an extensive world cruise through My Cruises Explorations by Norwegian. That epic voyage will depart Sydney, Australia on February 17, 2027.
