Key Aspects:
- Turks and Caicos may be receiving a multi-million-dollar port redevelopment on Grand Turk.
- The dual cruise and cargo ship project would allow for larger cruise ships to call on the island.
- The proposal is in early stages and is tied to a cruise port project involving the MSC Group.
Cruise passengers sailing to Grand Turk could soon find a much busier cruise destination waiting for them.
Officials in the Turks and Caicos Islands have revealed plans for a major redevelopment of Grand Turk’s port that would significantly expand the island’s cruise capacity, allowing it to accommodate at least two large cruise ships simultaneously.
The announcement was made during a budget debate by Premier Charles Washington Misick on April 23, 2026, who described the project as a major step forward for the island’s cruise infrastructure and broader economy.
“We are now at the Memorandum of Understanding stage on a major initiative that will see the upgrade and redevelopment of the existing commercial port in Grand Turk into a modern, dual-purpose facility, serving both cruise passengers and commercial cargo,” Misick told local media.
He said the initiative would be more than an upgrade and a “significant step change in our maritime infrastructure and, by extension, in our economic capacity.”
Under the proposal, Turks and Caicos Port Investments Ltd. would manage the development and future operations of the port.
Plans include a larger pier, upgraded docking areas for cruise ships, stronger port structures, and expanded facilities designed to handle more cruise traffic.

Officials said the goal is to make Grand Turk more competitive as cruise lines continue deploying larger ships throughout the Caribbean. The redevelopment is also tied to a larger $177.3 million cruise port project involving MSC Group, parent to MSC Cruises, CTL Maritime, and ITM Group.
Officials said the plan would convert the existing adjacent cargo pier area into a larger cruise terminal with new tourism and commercial development across its 63 acres.
Growing in Popularity
The push to expand Grand Turk’s cruise port comes as passenger numbers to the island continue climbing at a record pace.
Turks and Caicos surpassed one million cruise passengers in 2025, highlighting how quickly Grand Turk has grown into one of the Caribbean’s busiest cruise destinations since it first opened the Grand Turk Cruise Center in 2006.
By November 2025 alone, Grand Turk had recorded 1.1 million cruise passenger arrivals since January 1, 2025. It was a 4 percent increase over the same period in 2024.
Tourism officials have also pointed to a sharp increase in ship calls. During the first quarter of 2025 alone, Grand Turk received more than 410,000 cruise passengers, representing a 54 percent increase year over year.
The current Grand Turk Cruise Center, located on the southern end of the island, was originally designed to accommodate about 7,000 passengers per day, with Carnival Cruise Line the first to sail to the island.
The proposed redevelopment would allow Grand Turk to handle at least two large cruise ships simultaneously, possibly doubling the passenger capacity.
Government leaders also estimate the project could create more than 1,000 direct jobs and another 1,700 indirect jobs, with much of the activity centered around the cruise sector.
