Norwegian Cruise Line Causes Confusion Over Alcohol

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has decided to prohibit the sale of alcohol on its ships while in UK ports. This applies to all Norwegian cruise ships visiting the UK. Passengers who have purchased drinks packages or Free at Sea packages, are also affected.

The exact reason for the ban is unclear, with NCL blaming the UK port authorities for requesting license payments with short notice.

The New Rule and Its Implications

Norwegian Cruise Line has stopped selling and serving of alcohol onboard its ships calling on any UK port. The move has caught many guests off guard. In fact, most guests did not find out what was happening until notices in bars and lounges were put up onboard ships.

Guests who purchased drinks packages or opted for Free at Sea fares, which also include a drinks package, are not exempt from this recent ban.

The precise reason behind this sudden change remains unclear, with NCL attributing the restriction to the UK port authorities’ sudden demand for license payments. Parallels to this restriction have also been spotted in certain Italian ports, and NCL had previously enforced a similar ban in Greek ports in 2022.

One point of criticism has been NCL’s communication, or lack thereof, regarding the prohibition and how they plan to address it. The statement issued by Norwegian Cruise Line says:

“Please be advised that in accordance with the laws and regulations of select ports, the sale Of duty-free goods, including alcohol beverages, is not permitted while the vessel is in port or proximity thereof. However, in certain ports of call, which will be specified onboard. guests who have pre-purchased any of NCL’s beverage packages may be served. “

The fact that Norwegian Cruise Line is now banning alcohol sales, as well as the serving of alcohol while in port, suggests that the cruise line is currently not willing to levy taxes on guests or shoulder the burden itself. While this decision may save NCL the cost of taxes, it is causing dissatisfaction among their guests.

Moreover, NCL’s lack of clear communication about the ban and the reasons behind it has led to widespread confusion. While the cruise line attributed the ban to sudden demands for license payments by UK port authorities, the existing regulations suggest that this could be a move to avoid paying duty and VAT.

To add to the current confusion, some guests who are booked on a Norwegian sailing report that they have received confirmation from the cruise line that they are allowed to be served alcohol while in port.

Cruise Hive has reached out to Norwegian Cruise Line for further clarification and will update this post as more details emerge.

The Norwegian Fleet in the UK

NCL’s decision to halt alcohol sales at UK ports directly impacts several of its ships operating in the area. For instance, the 92,250 gross tons Norwegian Dawn, which has a guest capacity of 2,340 guests, has several upcoming sailings throughout the British Isles through October 14, marking the end of its European stint for the year.

Similarly, the Norwegian Getaway has cruises scheduled from Lisbon to Southampton and vice versa, wrapping up its European sailings with a voyage from Southampton to New York, on October 22.

The new Norwegian Prima, the company’s flagship vessel, will also operate itineraries from Southampton with cruises to Reykjavik and Barcelona through October 1. Finally, Norwegian Star has seven cruises that call on or sail from UK ports through October 23.

Rules & Regulations

The UK government has regulations that allow cruise ships with an international itinerary to serve duty-free alcohol during the voyage if passengers and crew are the only ones permitted onboard. However, for cruises that do not call at any other ports besides those in the UK, duty must be paid on the quantities consumed.

The UK Government’s website reads:Where a cruise ship calls at multiple UK ports as part of a wider international itinerary, the bars, and restaurants may continue to serve excise duty-free stores throughout the cruise. This is on the condition that the only passengers and crew allowed on board are those traveling on an entitled journey outside the UK.

Intra-UK cruises: These cruises do not call at any port other than those situated in the UR. Duty-free stores can be Ioaded for these Journeys but the quantities consumed must be duty-paid.

Southampton Cruise port

This regulation is not new. One person made a Freedom of Information request to HM Revenue and Customs in 2015; the letter posted online states:

“I have just traveled from Hamburg to Southampton with Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) aboard its new brand new ship Norwegian Escape. I arrived in Southampton on 27th October and up to then had been billed for purchases made at the advertised price plus a service charge of 18%.”

“On the evening of the 27th, the ship left port and sailed in the English Channel before returning to Southampton this morning. Overnight all bills now also had VAT additionally applied and also duty tax for alcohol.”

The implications of this situation for NCL are yet to be seen. The choice to cease alcohol sales in UK ports is significant, and how NCL handles the backlash will be a major topic of discussion in the coming days and weeks.

Royal Caribbean Meteorologist Moves On, No Replacement Hired

Popular social media personality and chief meteorologist for Royal Caribbean International, James Van Fleet, has confirmed that he is moving on from his position with the cruise line and no replacement will be hired.

What will this mean for keeping guests updated about weather conditions impacting their cruises?

James Van Fleet Moving On

As of May 1, 2023, James Van Fleet is no longer with Royal Caribbean International to report on storm systems or weather updates as the cruise line’s Chief Meteorologist. The update was shared on Van Fleet’s popular Twitter feed, where he has more than 27,000 followers.

“Hey friends, quick life update, just wanted to make it official and let you know as of May first I am no longer with Royal Caribbean,” Van Fleet said, while thanking the cruise line for an amazing work experience. “That was so much fun, I enjoyed every minute of it.”

Van Fleet also thanked guests for their trust over the past 6.5 years as he provided storm updates and other information about how different weather conditions would impact their cruise vacations.

Van Fleet started with Royal Caribbean in January 2017 as the first meteorologist employed by any cruise line, and over the years has updated cruise guests and interested fans about weather-related ship diversions, itinerary changes, port cancellations, delays, and more.

Prior to working with Royal Caribbean, he worked as a meteorologist for local television channels in both Tampa and Orlando, as well as stations in Texas, giving him more than 20 years’ experience in areas with the most popular cruise ship homeports.

Keeping Guests Informed

In comments to his video announcement, Van Fleet confirmed that Royal Caribbean will no longer have a staff meteorologist, but that does not mean the cruise line will fail to notify guests of weather-related changes to their cruises.

Many cruise lines use digital apps to keep guests informed of any itinerary changes, as well as text messages, emails, and onboard announcements and communication from each ship’s captain when changes or diversions are necessary.

While Van Fleet was a comfortable and familiar “face” for such announcements, the cruise line is sure to continue keeping guest, crew, and ship safety at the forefront when weather conditions may impact cruise travel. All ship captains and operations officials at the cruise line’s Miami headquarters continue to receive updated weather information at all times.

Some guests on social media are speculating that Van Fleet’s departure may be a cost-cutting maneuver by the cruise line, eliminating a position that may not be deemed essential. There is no confirmation, however, that financial considerations were in any way a factor in the employment change.

Hurricane Season Set to Begin

Van Fleet’s departure from Royal Caribbean International comes just days before the 2023 Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season is set to begin. The official hurricane season runs annually from June 1 through November 30, though dangerous storms can occasionally form outside those dates.

The outlook for the 2023 season predicts a “challenging” season. While a strong El Nino is possible to develop, which would generally lessen the number of tropical storms, a very warm Atlantic Ocean would indicate an increase in storms.

This creates greater uncertainty for storm season predictions, but overall, a total of 13-15 named storms are expected, with 6-7 becoming hurricanes and 2-3 strengthening to “major” storms. This amounts to an average hurricane season, but there is no predicting how, when, or where storms may make landfall or impact cruise travel at this point.

Cruise travelers should always monitor weather conditions as their sailing date approaches, and be prepared for alternative travel plans and flexible cruise expectations if weather does impact their voyage.

Norwegian Cancels Months of Alaska Season for One Ship

Norwegian Cruise Line has reached out to booked guests and affiliated travel partners to notify them that nearly all of Norwegian Spirit‘s 2024 Alaska sailing season has been cancelled for a full ship charter.

A total of 12 7-night sailings are impacted, which amounts to all of the ship’s regular Alaska season, with only longer cruises left open for bookings.

Norwegian Spirit Booked for Months of Charter Sailings

In an email sent to booked guests and travel partners, Norwegian Cruise Line has announced the cancellation of most of Norwegian Spirit‘s 2024 Alaska cruise season.

“As a result of a full ship charter, Norwegian Spirit’s sailings from July 3, 2024 through and including September 18, 2024 have been canceled,” the email read.

These cancellations include all of the ship’s planned 7-night sailings for Alaska in 2024, both northbound and southbound itineraries. In total, 12 cruises are impacted.

The email does not indicate what company may be arranging so many charter sailings, but Norwegian Cruise Line works with a wide variety of businesses to offer full-ship charters.

One of the cruise line’s most prominent charter partners is Sixthman, which arranges music festivals on cruise ships as well as land-based resorts. In the past 20 years, Sixthman has arranged more than 130 music festivals at sea, bringing unique bands, artists, athletes, comedians, and other performers together with fans for unforgettable getaways.

It is also possible that more than one company is involved in the unprecedented number of charter sailings that are removing Norwegian Spirit from public booking for nearly three months.

It is important to note that because these are charter sailings, the ship is not being removed from service and will continue to host guests, but those bookings must go through the appropriate charter arrangements rather than directly through Norwegian Cruise Line.

Generous Compensation Offered

These cancellations will impact more than 24,000 guests, as Norwegian Spirit can welcome 2,032 guests when booked at double occupancy. It is common for Alaska sailings to be family cruises booked over 100% with 3-4 guests per cabin.

To compensate guests whose cruises are now cancelled, Norwegian Cruise Line is offering generous compensation with multiple credits available.

First, all impacted guests will automatically receive a full refund of the fare paid, returned to the original form of payment. If the cruise fare was paid with a future cruise credit (FCC), that credit will be returned to the guest’s Latitudes loyalty account.

Second, guests have the option to take advantage of a 50% discount for select 2023 Alaska sailings, which will be issued as a new FCC and may be applied for either Norwegian Jewel sailings (May 22, 2023 through and including September 25, 2023) or Norwegian Spirit sailings (May 24, 2023, though and including August 23, 2023).

Finally, all guests will also receive a 10% FCC for any future voyage from May 22, 2023 through December 31, 2024, on any ship cruising to any destination. The 10% discount cannot be combined with the 50% 2023 Alaska discount offer.

“We sincerely appreciate your understanding and look forward to welcoming you aboard very soon,” the email concluded.

Alternative Options

While it will be disappointing to many guests to have their Alaska cruises cancelled, by notifying impacted travelers more than 13 months in advance, there is plenty of time to make different arrangements for an amazing cruise to the Last Frontier.

Guests could take advantage of the 50% discount to sail on Norwegian Spirit this year, if they are able to accelerate their travel plans, or they could enjoy the slightly larger Norwegian Jewel for a 2023 Alaska cruise.

The 10% discount could also be applied to other Norwegian cruise ships in Alaska for 2023: Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, and Norwegian Sun.

If guests would still prefer to set sail in 2024, Norwegian Spirit will be offering longer itineraries that do visit Alaska that summer. The April 22 and May 8 departures are both 16-night sailings that include not only top Alaskan ports of call, but also Hawaiian destinations – an amazing combination for an unforgettable itinerary.

Similarly, the June 17, 2024 Norwegian Spirit cruise sails from Honolulu to Vancouver, visiting the Hawaiian ports of Kauai, Maui, and Hilo before sailing to Alaska to visit Icy Strait Point, Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan.

More From Cruise Hive

At the end of the 2024 Alaska season, Norwegian Spirit will offer one final Alaska-to-Hawaii cruise of the year, departing on September 25 for a 16-night cruise from Vancouver to Honolulu.

In addition to the remaining Norwegian Spirit 2024 Alaska cruises, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Jewel, and Norwegian Sun will again be deployed to the region next year, offering a wide range of itineraries and departure dates to choose from for any guests interested in sailing Alaska.

Mexico’s Cruise Arrivals Soar to Record Heights

Mexico’s cruise industry has hit a new milestone, with an unprecedented 2.9 million passengers arriving in the first quarter of 2023, according to a report from the Ministry of Tourism.

This impressive figure marks an increase of more than 80% compared to the same period in 2022 and an increase of nearly 10% compared to the first quarter of 2019, the busiest cruise year in history.

A Surge in Cruise Arrivals and Economic Impact

Mexico’s cruise tourism industry is experiencing an unprecedented boom, with a record-breaking 2.9 million guests arriving in the first quarter of 2023. This represents a stunning increase in arrivals and economic impact as the country’s investment in tourism pays off.

Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, reported that the arrival of 995 cruise ships in this period has resulted in a foreign exchange income of 241 million dollars, marking an increase of 104% compared to the same period of 2022.

This surge in arrivals is about more than just numbers. It signifies an impressive recovery and growth of Mexico’s tourism sector, with the average expenditure of cruise passengers increasing to 80.9 dollars, a jump of 10.1% from the 73.5 dollars registered in the same period of 2022.

Top Destinations

Mexico is home to the busiest cruise port in the world, Cozumel, but that’s not all the country has to offer. Both the Caribbean side as well as the Pacific coastline are incredibly popular destinations for cruise ships.

Certain destinations have seen particularly significant growth. Cozumel and Costa Maya on the Caribbean side, as well as Cabo San Lucas, Ensenada, and Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific side, were the ports that received the highest number of cruise passengers, accounting for a staggering 88.3% of the total.

Cozumel saw 409 arrivals and over 1.28 million guests. This is 18.9% more cruise ship arrivals and 115.1% more cruise passengers than in 2022. Despite receiving fewer vessels than Cozumel, Costa Maya reported 145 arrivals with nearly half a million guests, an increase of 48.5% over the first quarter of 2022.

On the Mexican Riviera, Cabo San Lucas welcomed 100 vessels with over 300,000 guests, showing a 26.6% in ships and a 132.4% increase in passengers compared to 2022.

Puerto Vallarta saw the arrival of 72 cruise ships with over 220,000 guests, a growth of 28.6% and 113.8% compared to the first quarter of 2022.

Ensenada, with 92 cruise ship arrivals and 274,352 passengers, dramatically increased 253.8% and 506.1% in the number of ships and guests compared to the same period in 2022. The massive increase in Ensenada can be attributed to the unrest that spoiled much of the cruise season last year.

Mexico Heading for a Record-Breaking Year

All in all, Mexico could be heading to the biggest year in history, possibly beating the impressive arrival numbers of 2019. In that year, Mexican ports received 2,951 cruise ships; these ships brought with them 8,926,617 passengers.

With the 995 cruise ships that visited Mexico in the first three months of the year and the 2,9 million passengers, the country’s ports are well underway to surpass those numbers.

However, the initial months of the year typically witness a peak in arrivals, with the summer months seeing a slowdown. This pattern is due to the popularity of Alaska and European cruises during the warmer months. Still, the data suggest that Mexico’s ports are on a promising course to a record-breaking year.

Cruise Ship Passenger Captured Climbing Between Balconies

An unusual video from Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras has been circulating online in recent days, and could lead to the passengers involved being banned for life from the cruise line due to their risky and unauthorized behavior of climbing between balconies. Details of the incident are not clear, however, and there is much that could be going on out-of-sight.

Video of Risky Incident

A video circulating on social media shows risky behavior by a group of guests aboard Mardi Gras. Posted to TikTok in mid-April, the video has gained traction through dozens of social shares, and may be highlighting dangerous and prohibited behavior.

Just under a minute in length, the video – apparently taken from a different cruise ship by the viewing angle – shows a group of cruisers on a balcony. One of the cruisers, apparently a male guest, is climbing on top of the stateroom balcony area, outside the railing of the next higher deck’s balcony staterooms.

You can watch the footage below:

The climbing guest briefly interacts with a guide from a higher stateroom, seeming to retrieve a small white object – possibly an earpod or something similar. The climber then returns to the lower balcony, stepping onto a chair another guest put in place for assistance.

Worth Reading: Teenagers Caught Climbing Cruise Ship Balcony in Shocking Video

In total, five guests appear to be from the lower stateroom, and they appear to be younger cruisers, perhaps in their teens, both male and female, but ages are indeterminate.

Several of the guests are clapping and cheering when the climber reaches the balcony floor. The hashtags #mardigras #havingtoomuchfun and #carnival are posted with the video.

What Happened?

Because the video begins as the climbing guest has already reached the next deck, it is unknown what behavior led to this incident.

It appears the young cruisers may have been tossing an earpod or earbud around and it inadvertently landed one deck up on another stateroom’s balcony.

Carnival Cruise Ship Passenger balcony Climbing
Carnival Cruise Ship Passenger Balcony Climbing

The climbing appears to have been an attempt to retrieve the item, but there is no explanation or indication that the guests tried any other, safer way to get it back, such as going upstairs through the ship’s hallway to knock on the stateroom’s door or calling Guest Services for assistance.

They may not have known anyone was inside that upper stateroom at the time and could have believed they had no other options, but such risky behavior is never acceptable.

Will There Be Consequences?

At this time, it is unknown whether or not there will be consequences for this very risky, obviously unacceptable behavior. While the guests in the video were not taking selfies or otherwise playing on the balcony or railings, climbing across dividers and up to another deck is most definitely prohibited behavior.

This could be considered a violation of Carnival Cruise Line’s Code of Conduct, which explicitly states:

“Consistent with our commitment to safety, disruptive behavior is not tolerated and any guest whose conduct affects the comfort, enjoyment, safety or well-being of other guests or crew will be disembarked at their own expense and banned from sailing on Carnival in the future.”

In general, “disruptive behavior” has been interpreted as fighting or violence, but the broad term could certainly be applied to this situation. Guests in violation of those guidelines can be subject to a $500 fine, stateroom confinement, or removal from the ship.

This incident follows just weeks after other unacceptable behavior was videoed from a Carnival Cruise ship, when a guest filmed fishing exploits off their balcony while docked in Nassau. Those guests were banned for life from sailing with Carnival.

What Could Have Happened

While it may seem that the video is an “all’s well that ends well” situation with the guest returning safely to the lower stateroom balcony and not demonstrating any further outrageous behavior on camera, the situation could have ended very differently.

The railings and outdoor fixtures of a cruise ship – such as the small ledges the guest is climbing on – can be very slippery, and it would have been easy for the guest to fall and be severely injured, or worse.

This behavior could also have caused damage to the ship through bent railings that are not meant to support that much weight, especially as when the guest climbs back down, he appears to step on the balcony door handle.

Glorifying the video could also lead to copycat acts and imitations, with additional guests staging similar stunts for social media fame. Doing so would create additional risks and dangerous situations, and it would be only a matter of time before a tragedy could occur.

Parents should always speak with their children – even older teens who may be more mature and responsible – about what is and is not acceptable behavior, and all guests should abide by cruise ship rules and safety guidelines at all times.

Details Announced for Newest MSC Ship Christening Ceremony

MSC Cruises is ready to welcome its newest ship, MSC Euribia, at a stunning naming ceremony on June 8, 2023, in Copenhagen. The cruise line has announced the ship’s ceremonial godmother as well as other special events that will be part of the very special evening.

MSC Euribia to Be Named in June

On Thursday, June 8, 2023, MSC Euribia will be named in an elegant, gala event in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The honors will be done by the ship’s godmother, Hollywood icon and Oscar-winning actress, Sophia Loren. MSC Euribia will be the nineteenth ship Loren has named, furthering her long-standing history with the line that began in 2003 with the naming of MSC Lirica, and emphasizing the classic and enduring elegance of the new ship.

Everything about the evening’s celebration has been carefully curated to inaugurate the ship in style, starting with the location. Copenhagen was chosen as the ship’s launch location due to its rich maritime heritage and dedication to sustainability, which aligns not only with the values of MSC Cruises, but also with the innovations of the ship as the cruise line’s most energy-efficient design ever.

The naming ceremony will also feature other key events, including the attendance of local dignitaries, international media, and cruise line officials. Well-known Danish television host Sarah Grünewald will serve as the Master of Ceremony for the evening.

Traditional elements will include the time-honored tradition of breaking a bottle of champagne over MSC Euribia‘s bow, as well as a gala dinner and live entertainment. To enjoy the energy of the evening, world-renowned French DJ and record producer Bob Sinclar will DJ late-night dancing and celebration.

Inaugural Voyage and Beyond

MSC Euribia‘s first voyage will commence on Saturday, June 10, 2023. This first cruise is a 7-night roundtrip sailing from Kiel, Germany, calling on Copenhagen and three stunning ports in Norway before returning to Kiel.

The new ship will remain in northern Europe through at least October 2024, offering a variety of sailings from different homeports and with amazing destinations to visit, including Kiel, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Southampton, Zeebrugge, and Paris.

Onboard, guests will be treated to MSC Cruises’ most innovative and unforgettable ship ever, with incredible features such as specially commissioned LED artwork, panoramic views from The Carousel Lounge, more than a dozen dining venues, five pools, the coral-themed Ocean Cay Aquapark, dedicated spaces and an educational lab for kids and teens, world-class entertainment, and much more.

Of special interest is Galleria Euribia, the longest LED Dome at sea, housing the ship’s retail spaces and both restaurant and entertainment venues in an intriguing and immersive space.

The Meraviglia-plus-class vessel is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and includes multiple state-of-the-art environmental features, including special hull painting to reduce organism growth that could bring invasive species to different marine habitats.

Advanced onboard wastewater treatment systems, extensive waste management handling and recycling, and the elimination of single-use plastics onboard all ensure minimal residue and pollutants from the ship, while an innovative underwater radiated noise management system reduces overall impact on the marine environment.

All of these measures add up to the one of the most environmentally-responsible cruise ships ever built, very appropriate for a vessel named for the ancient Greek goddess Eurybia who harnessed the winds, weather, and constellations to master the seas.

MSC Euribia will join her sister ships in the Merviglia-plus class, MSC Grandiosa and MSC Virtuosa, both of which measure 181,541 gross tons and can welcome 4,842 guests at double occupancy and as many as 6,334 passengers when fully booked. Onboard, 1,700 international crew members provide excellent, thoughtful service.

Several new dining and beverage offerings will also make their debut on the Carnival Venezia, including the new specialty restaurant, Il Viaggio, which offers a menu inspired by the diverse culinary regions of Italy.

Another Oversold Royal Caribbean Cruise – What’s Different?

Yet another Allure of the Seas sailing may be oversold, as Royal Caribbean International has reached out to booked guests with a “special offer” to entice them to change their travel plans.

But something very significant is different this time compared to recently oversold cruises – what is it?

Allure of the Seas Special Offer

Guests booked aboard the May 21, 2023 departure of Allure of the Seas have received email communication about a special offer, described as “pretty sweet options” for flexible guests.

“Ahead of your Allure of the Seas May 21st, 2023 sailing, we’re looking to see if you and your travel party have flexible travel plans,” the email reads. “If your travel plans are set in stone, mark this email as ‘Read’, and gear up for your upcoming adventure – although, there are some pretty sweet options below.”

Photo Credit: BA Arts / Shutterstock

Unlike prior communications for previously oversold cruises – as recently as for the May 14, 2023 departure – there is no mention of an “unexpected inventory error” or specifically using the word “oversold.”

The intent is the same, however – to offer guests enticing compensation if they’re able to switch their cruise vacation plans to a different vessel or a different sailing.

The impacted cruise is a 7-night roundtrip voyage from Galveston, departing on Sunday, May 21 and visiting Roatan, Costa Maya, and Cozumel, before arriving back in Texas on May 28.

The Options for Booked Guests

The special offers are enticing indeed, with multiple choices to encourage guests to take advantage of the unique (or not so unique, with how often this has been happening) opportunity.

The first offer is a 100% refund of the booked Allure of the Seas sailing, plus a $300 onboard credit per stateroom to move to a select Voyager of the Seas sailing, also departing from Galveston.

The replacement cruises are only 5-night sailings, however, and visit only Costa Maya and Cozumel. The July 10 and July 15 Voyager of the Seas departures are available for this offer.

This option gives guests a full refund of their booked cruise, a free transfer to Voyager of the Seas (guests must still pay for taxes, fees, and gratuities) in a similar stateroom, and $300 of a non-refundable onboard credit.

The second option is to transfer to either the July 30 or August 6 departure for Allure of the Seas, which are both identical to the May 30 sailing date.

This offer does not include any refund or onboard credit, but if the new cruise is a cheaper rate, the price difference will be refunded back to the original form of payment.

The third option is to cancel completely, with a 100% refund of the booking. As an added incentive, guests who select this option will also receive a 100% future cruise credit (FCC) for any future Royal Caribbean sailing.

The amount of the FCC will be equal to the fare paid for the now-cancelled cruise, and will be valid for any sailing departing through May 15, 2024.

For all options, Royal Caribbean International will also reimburse guests for non-refundable, pre-purchased travel expenses such as flights or hotels.

“Please note that this special offer is time-limited and subject to availability,” the email concludes. “If you’re happy to be excluded from the special offer, please disregard this email – no further action is required.”

Interested guests must reach out via a special survey to indicate their preferred option, but doing so is not a guarantee that they will receive the offer.

If interested travelers are not contacted by Royal Caribbean by May 18, they remain booked on the original cruise with no further compensation or adjustments.

New Booking Strategy?

With these “special offers” applying to so many Allure of the Seas sailings in recent weeks, speculation is high about why. An “inventory error” could be an explanation for one cruise, maybe two, but this is becoming a regular occurrence.

The oversold cruises are not just on Allure of the Seas, either – Wonder of the Seas and Rhapsody of the Seas have also experienced similar situations.

Could this be a new booking strategy by Royal Caribbean International to ensure ships are sailing at above 100% capacity? Or are there deeper issues with online booking engines, group sailings, or even charter reservations that may be impacting stateroom availability?

The fact that the latest email language does not mention an error may indicate a new approach to cruise reservations, or could simply be a way to make the communication more encouraging to invite passengers to accept the offers.

Only time will tell if future cruises continue to be impacted and more special offers extended to additional guests.

Royal Caribbean Announces When It Will Return to China

Royal Caribbean International has made the exciting announcement that it will resume operations in China. The voyages will start with the Spectrum of the Seas, sailing from Shanghai starting April 2024. Also, in late 2024, Anthem of the Seas will be sailing in Asia for the first time.

The return of Spectrum of the Seas to China is a significant milestone for the cruise industry in Asia. The cruise ship is both the biggest and one of the most popular ships to have operated in China before the global pause in operations. It quickly became a favorite among Chinese families after its initial debut in 2019.

Spectrum of the Seas Returns to China

Royal Caribbean International has announced its return to China starting in April 2024. The Quantum-Ultra-class cruise ship, currently sailing from Singapore, will operate a series of cruises from Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Spectrum’s itinerary includes 4- and 5-night cruises from Shanghai to various destinations, including Fukuoka, Okinawa, Nagasaki, Osaka, and Tokyo in Japan.

Come December 2024, Spectrum of the Seas will also operate eight sailings from Hong Kong to ports such as Ishigaki and Miyazaki in Japan, Taipei in Taiwan, and Nha Trang in Vietnam.

Bert Hernandez, senior vice president, International, Royal Caribbean International: “This is the moment we – along with Chinese holidaymakers – have been waiting for. Our return to China is an exciting milestone that could only be marked with Spectrum of the Seas, which became a household name with Chinese families and travelers alike when it debuted in Shanghai as the latest and greatest Royal Caribbean ship in 2019.”

Spectrum of the Seas first set sail on its maiden voyage on April 18, 2019. It was constructed at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, and at 169,379 gross tons, it became the fifth-largest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet upon delivery. The vessel can accommodate 4,246 guests at double occupancy.

Spectrum of the Seas has a range of features that make it so popular with families in Asia. There is an array of restaurants featuring regionally inspired menus and entertainment.

It boasts the likes of Hot Pot, Teppanyaki, Sichuan Red, and a karaoke lounge named Star Moment. Guests can also enjoy production shows at the Royal Theater.

Anthem of the Seas: New to Asian Waters

In late 2024, the Anthem of the Seas will sail in Asia for the first time, embarking from Singapore. Royal Caribbean has not revealed the itineraries she will sail on.

However, it seems likely the ship will take over Spectrum of the Seas‘ itineraries that range between three and nine nights, and sail to Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand.

“We thank the government of China for establishing a pathway forward and continue to be committed to expanding the cruise industry in a region we have sailed from for more than a decade.”

”This has also opened up a world of opportunities to expand the variety of holidays in Asia, as another award-winning ship sets sail in the region with the introduction of Anthem of the Seas in Singapore,” Bert Hernandez continued.

Anthem of the Seas embarked on its maiden voyage on April 22, 2015. At 168,666 gross tons, it can accommodate 4,180 guests at double occupancy.

Onboard Anthem of the Seas, guests can enjoy live music at the Latin-themed club Boleros, Brass & Bock, and the Olivier Award-winning musical We Will Rock You.

The ship also features SeaPlex, the largest indoor activity space at sea. The huge variety of dining options includes Solarium Bistro, Johnny Rockets, Cafe Promenade, Chops Grille, Izumi, and Wonderland.

Royal Caribbean’s return to China is a significant development in the global cruise industry. As one of the largest cruise operators in the world, Royal Caribbean’s re-entry, together with other cruise lines, into the Chinese market signals a positive turn in the industry’s recovery efforts. Moreover, it is expected to substantially boost tourism in the region, offering more options for cruising in Asia.

Bookings for these new itineraries on Spectrum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas will be available in the coming weeks.
