Carnival Cruise Ship Delayed for Clean-Up After Soot Discharge

Carnival Cruise Line crews are in clean-up mode after Carnival Magic accidentally discharged soot while preparing to depart the pier in Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos Islands. The vessel has been delayed, and the cruise line confirms it’s likely due to a brief power outage.

Carnival Magic Delayed After Soot Discharge

Passengers onboard Carnival Magic were met with an unexpected situation after the cruise ship discharged soot into the water, causing what initially looked like a significant oil leak coming from the Dream-class vessel.

The incident occurred after a brief power outage on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, as the ship was preparing to leave port. The news first broke on social media through Cruise Hive’s dedicated Carnival Cruise Line Group, with photos posted by passenger James Robinson onboard.

“There was a power outage. The power was out for one minute,” Robinson described. It came back on, everything normal. But now there is a giant oil slick on the back of the ship. The officers were on the pier, visibly upset.”

Robinson’s description of the discharge as an “oil slick” was prior to the assessment by the ship’s environmental team that identified the debris as soot.

The Carnival Magic team is working on the clean-up of a soot discharge from the ship’s Exhaust Gas Control Systems (EGCS) that occurred while preparing for departure today from Grand Turk. A momentary power outage likely contributed to the incident,a statement from a Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson said.

“The ship’s departure has been delayed while we complete the clean-up, and all appropriate authorities have been informed. We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and will complete the proper clean-up and address any technical issues with the ship’s EGCS equipment. Carnival Magic’s itinerary should not be impacted.”

Carnival Magic was to have departed Grand Turk at 6 p.m. after spending the day in port, but did not leave until shortly after 8:30 p.m. once the cleanup was completed.

Undoubtedly, an investigation will be held to determine exactly how the power failed, what systems were affected, and what, if any, safeguards did not function as intended that resulted in this unfortunate incident.

Both cruise lines and port communities take environmental concerns very seriously, and any necessary changes will certainly be made to prevent such an incident from happening again.

Itinerary Not Impacted

The 128,000-gross-ton Carnival Magic is currently sailing a 6-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary that departed Miami, Florida on Sunday, October 29. The ship has already called on Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, and Grand Turk was the vessel’s second port of call.

Following Grand Turk, Carnival Magic will spend Thursday, November 2 in Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic. Despite the delay in departing Grand Turk, the ship’s scheduled 8 a.m. arrival in Grand Turk is not expected to be impacted, as the two ports of call are just 112 miles (180 kilometers) apart.

The cruise ship’s typical cruising speed is 22.5 knots (26 miles per hour / 42 kilometers per hour), meaning the ship can cover the distance between Grand Turk and Amber Cove in just over four hours. Even with the later than planned departure, the ship still has more than 10 hours to reach the Dominican Republic on time.

Amber Cove is the ship’s last port of call on the current itinerary, and another day at sea will bring the vessel back to Miami on Saturday, November 4.

Royal Caribbean Announces Four-Ship Line-Up for Alaska 2025

Royal Caribbean International has unveiled its plans for the summer of 2025, announcing a four-ship line-up for Alaska cruises.

Anthem of the Seas will make its Alaska debut alongside returning ships Quantum of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, and Serenade of the Seas. The cruises, sailing between May and September 2025, will offer a variety of 7-night vacations starting from Seattle; Vancouver, and Seward.

A New Addition to Alaska

Royal Caribbean announced its plans for the 2025 Alaska cruise season today, November 1, which will bring three familiar cruise ships to Alaska, and one new addition. Quantum of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas, and Radiance of the Seas are all regular visitors to Alaska. In 2025, Anthem of the Seas will make her debut in the Northern Frontier.

The 168,666 gross tons, Quantum-class cruise ship Anthem of the Seas will be sailing roundtrip from Seattle, offering two different 7-night itineraries. Cruises onboard Anthem of the Seas will include visits to Sitka, Skagway, Endicott Arm fjord, Dawes Glacier, Juneau, and Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Like her sister Quantum of the Seas, guests can enjoy everything that Alaska has to offer in a unique way, enjoying onboard amenities such as RipCord, the skydiving simulator, and the North Star glass observation capsule, which reaches 300 feet above the ocean.

Anthem of the Seas will be taking the long way around on her way to Alaska. After she completes her New York cruises to the Caribbean in 2024, she will reposition to Europe for a series of cruises around Northern Europe, Spain, and Portugal, sailing from Southampton.

She will then transit to Dubai, starting October 2024, sailing on to Singapore, from where she will offer guests several months of cruises around South East Asia. Starting May 9, 2025, she will already have arrived in Seattle for the first of her Alaska cruises, following a month-long repositioning period.

Return to Alaska for Three Cruise Ships

Three ships will be making their return to Alaska, including the 168,666, 2014-built Quantum of the Seas

Quantum of the Seas will also offer guests 7-night roundtrip cruises from Seattle, Washington. Itineraries include visits to Sitka, Skagway, Endicott Arm fjord, Dawes Glacier, and Juneau in Alaska, and Icy Strait Point and Victoria in Canada.

Serenade of the Seas also returns to Alaska, sailing from Vancouver after a unique 16-night Panama Canal cruise, with the first cruise setting sail on May 4, 2025.

During the 16-night repositioning, which sails from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Serenade of the Seas will call on George Town, Grand Cayman; Cartagena, Colombia; Colón, Panama; the Panama Canal; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The first cruise in Alaska takes guests along the Inside Passage to explore destinations like Sitka, Tracy Arm Fjord, Haines, and Ketchikan, Alaska.

Last but not least, Radiance of the Seas offers alternating northbound and southbound cruises from Seward and Vancouver, with destinations including Juneau, Sitka, Skagway, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, and Hubbard Glacier. The first cruise in Alaska for the Radiance-class cruise ship sets sail on May 9, 2025.

Before or after the 7-night cruises, guests can extend their adventure with a Royal Caribbean Cruisetour to Denali National Park.

While Royal Caribbean International has scheduled several visits to Sitka in 2025, it remains to be seen if those visits will happen, after locals raised another petition to severely limit the number of ships and passengers that can visit the popular Alaskan port.

Royal Caribbean Ship Changes Only Port of Call on Cruise

Guests aboard Royal Caribbean International’s Anthem of the Seas will not be visiting the only port of call scheduled for their cruise vacation.

Due to a poor weather forecast, the ship will be unable to visit CocoCay as planned, and instead is heading for Freeport as an alternative destination in the Bahamas.

Anthem of the Seas Itinerary Change

Because of poor weather at CocoCay, Anthem of the Seas will not be able to visit the private island destination on her very first sailing from Cape Liberty, New Jersey, her new winter homeport.

The Quantum-class ship departed New Jersey on Monday, October 30, 2023, for a 6-night Bahamas sailing. The only port of call on the itinerary was to have been Perfect Day at CocoCay, but now satellite tracking data as well as passengers onboard report the ship headed for Freeport, instead.

The first two days of the sailing are days at sea while Anthem of the Seas makes her way to the Bahamas, 1,000 miles (1,610 kilometers) away. Thursday, November 2 was to have been the visit to CocoCay, followed by two more days at sea as the ship returned to her new seasonal homeport.

Instead, however, the ship is aimed at Freeport – 70 miles (113 km) northwest of CocoCay. Anthem of the Seas is showing an estimated arrival time of 10:30 a.m. on November 2, though rough weather along the way may influence the final arrival time.

It should be noted that the 168,666-gross-ton Anthem of the Seas has also had engine difficulty in recent months that has meant cancelled ports of call and adjusted itineraries as the ship modifies her maximum cruising speed. The change on this sailing, however, does not appear to be due to engine or propulsion issues.

Anthem of the Seas can welcome 4,180 guests at double occupancy, and up to 4,905 travelers when fully booked. The ship will remain homeported from New Jersey until late April 2024, offering 7-night Bahamas itineraries.

On April 28, 2024, the vessel will depart for the last time on a transatlantic cruise to Southampton and the beginning of her next season in Europe, after which she will be deployed to Singapore and will not return to North America at least until Summer 2025.

Poor Weather Forecast for the Bahamas

On Thursday, when Anthem of the Seas will be in the Bahamas, weather forecasts are predicting a mostly cloudy but very windy day, with winds expected from 20-30 miles per hour (32-48 kilometers per hour), and even stronger gusts likely.

While the weather will be similar at both Freeport and CocoCay, the difference is in the docking facilities. At the Freeport cruise terminal, the harbor is somewhat protected and therefore strong winds are blunted and it is safer for guests to get on and off the ship.

In contrast, the pier at CocoCay is open and exposed, and while this makes for great photos of the island and easy access for ships, the pier can be subject to very rough waves that make it unsafe to walk across. Similarly, winds pushing on a docked ship cause movement that may make it necessary to close the gangways at times, even if the ship is docked.

These types of itinerary changes are not uncommon, particularly later in the year when the end of hurricane season generates storm systems that, while not full-blown hurricanes, still have high winds and rain that can disrupt cruise ship calls.

Guests setting sail at this time of year should always remain flexible with their travel plans and expectations, ready to enjoy an amazing cruise vacation no matter where they may visit.

Carnival Cruise Line Honoring Veterans With Homeport Tributes

Carnival Cruise Line is hosting a week-long series of tributes to military veterans in six different homeports in early November, leading up to Veterans Day on November 11, 2023. The events will happen on six different Carnival ships and will honor hundreds of veterans in each port community.

Carnival Offering Homeport Veteran Tributes

When six different Carnival cruise ships spend the day in their homeports in early November, each vessel will host a special onboard tribute for local veterans. The events will include recognition of the veterans’ service with a special ceremony, and a delicious luncheon for attendees to enjoy.

“We’re so proud to carry more active and retired military service members than any other cruise line, so we wanted to honor our hometown heroes in some of our port communities for Veterans Day this year,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “These tribute events serve as our thanks for the sacrifices made by local veterans, active military personnel and their families.”

The onboard events will begin aboard Carnival Horizon in Miami and the newly renovated Carnival Paradise in Tampa on Sunday, November 5, and continue throughout the week.

Carnival Breeze will host veterans in Galveston on Monday, November 6; Carnival Miracle will host her tribute event in Long Beach on Tuesday, November 7; and Carnival Valor will welcome veterans aboard in New Orleans on Thursday, November 9.

The final event will be aboard Mardi Gras at the world’s busiest cruise port, Port Canaveral, on Saturday, November 11 – the actual date of Veterans Day.

Special Community Donations

In addition to the special onboard tribute events, Carnival Cruise Line is seeking to make a difference for veterans in these homeport communities by donating a passenger van to each local VA office to help provide transportation to local veterans to reach VA programs and services, including health care.

Carnival Cruise Line has long been a supporter of Operation Homefront, a nationally recognized nonprofit that supports America’s military families with financial assistance for housing, providing holiday meals and holiday toy drives, helping with transitional housing, and much more.

Onboard Carnival cruises, guests can easily donate to Operation Homefront. A portion of the proceeds from special group photos purchased from onboard military appreciation events as well as purchases of the exclusive “Heroes American Pale Ale” brewed aboard ships equipped with breweries are donated to the charity organization.

Onboard Events Across the Fleet

While only six ships will host special events for veterans in the community, every Carnival cruise ship hosts a Military Appreciation Gathering on every sailing, including during the week of Veterans Day.

These onboard events welcome all military veterans and active service members and their families, and offer an opportunity not only for well-deserved recognition, but for camaraderie and sharing experiences.

Carnival Cruise Line US Flag

Special recognition is paid to the longest-serving military member in the room with the presentation of a special hero coin, and all veterans in attendance receive a commemorative pin. Even better – all service members are entered into a drawing for a free Carnival cruise, which is given to one entrant each month!

“This is just another way to say thank you to those whose courage and bravery allow all of us the freedom to cruise and to have fun,” said John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador.

Carnival Cruise Line began the Military Appreciation Gatherings in 2016, and now hosts more than 1,500 such events each year that are attended by tens of thousands of guests. Many of these events are held in the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge on ships that feature that specially-themed venue.

In July, the cruise line announced that the single events are being expanded to full-day tributes, and each Military Appreciation Day will include special messages on ships’ Seaside Theater screens, raising the U.S. flag in the atrium (on sailings of four nights and longer), and other special activities throughout the day.

This ensures that Carnival Cruise Line, which carries the most service members of any cruise line in the world, continues to honor veterans not just on Veterans Day, but on every sailing year-round.

Carnival Cruise Line Announces Fleet Holiday Decoration Schedule

Holiday cruises are much beloved traditions for many cruise passengers, and a wonderful way to enjoy the cheer of the season without the stress of cleaning, cooking, decorating, and other preparations.

Ahead of the official start of the 2023 holiday season, Carnival Cruise Line has announced the dates for when each ship in the fleet will be decked out in its holiday finest.

Carnival Cruise Line Christmas 2023 Decorating Schedule

With the holiday season fast approaching, cruise guests with sailings booked in late November and early December are curious whether or not their ship will be showing off wreaths, garlands, bows, and festively-lit trees when they embark.

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald has announced the holiday decorating schedule for each of the line’s 25 current vessels, as well as when the upcoming Carnival Jubilee will also be showcasing festive décor.

“I wanted to share the Christmas decorating schedule with you as our professional decoratists deck the decks with holly, ivy and of course the big tree,” Heald said.

The schedule for 2023 Carnival ship Christmas decorations is as follows (by cruise departure date):

  • November 24 – Carnival Conquest, Carnival Radiance
  • November 25 – Carnival Breeze, Carnival Horizon, Mardi Gras, Carnival Miracle, Carnival Spirit
  • November 26 – Carnival Celebration, Carnival Dream, Carnival Glory, Carnival Panorama, Carnival Vista
  • November 27 – Carnival Elation, Carnival Liberty, Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Valor
  • November 30 – Carnival Venezia
  • December 2 – Carnival Magic, Carnival Paradise
  • December 3 – Carnival Legend, Carnival Luminosa, Carnival Pride
  • December 4 – Carnival Freedom, Carnival Splendor, Carnival Sunshine

The new Carnival Jubilee – which just completed her conveyance down the Ems river ahead of her upcoming sea trials – will be decorated beginning December 20, 2023, as she welcomes dignitaries and VIPs onboard for her initial sailing.

The very first guests to sail on the new ship, which debuts from Galveston, Texas on December 23, will be the first ever to see her holiday celebrations.

Why Are Ships Decorated on Different Dates?

The schedule for decorating different cruise ships for the holidays depends on a variety of factors. Because seasonal decorations are not stored onboard, ships can only be in port while the decorations are loaded and set up.

Furthermore, most cruise lines employ separate professionals to hang holiday decorations, as regular crew members already have full schedules with their assigned duties. This ensures the ships can be fully decorated in just the few hours between when one cruise ends and the next begins later the same day.

Occasionally, decorations must be shipped to different homeports, and that may delay a ship’s decorating schedule until later in the season to ensure the proper materials and supplies arrive for the full decorating ensemble.

When Are Holiday Decorations Removed?

Carnival’s ships will remain fully in festive mode through January 1, 2024, but will typically lose their decorations on the first turnaround day in the new year, even if that is January 2 or 3.

Just as the initial decoration dates vary, so too do the dates when decorations are removed, but in general, all holiday decor is stowed away within the first week of January.

On rare occasions, it may be necessary to remove decorations before the new year officially begins, such as if a ship is entering a dry dock or beginning an extensive longer sailing that will take it far from where holiday decorations may be stored.

In these rare situations, however, it is more likely that decorations would simply be packed away onboard after the new year, and removed from the ship at the first available opportunity to be stored until the next holiday season.

Royal Caribbean Raising Gratuity Rates for All Passengers

Royal Caribbean International is quietly raising its daily gratuity rate for all guests next month. Travelers who have prepaid gratuities for an upcoming cruise, regardless of the sailing date, are not impacted, and guests with upcoming cruises can prepay to lock in the current lower rate but must do so before setting sail or they will be subject to the new, higher rate once onboard.

Royal Caribbean Gratuity Rate Increase

Beginning on Saturday, November 11, 2023, the automatic gratuity rates for all Royal Caribbean guests will increase $2 (USD) per person, per day regardless of passengers’ age or stateroom category. This will make the new rate $18 for all non-suite staterooms (interior, ocean view, balcony, etc.) and junior suite classifications, and $20.50 for guests in suites.

The previous rate, which began September 7, 2022, was $16 per person, per day for most stateroom categories, and $18.50 for suites. Before that, gratuities were $14.50 per person, per day in most staterooms, and $17.50 per person, per day in suites.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Deck
Royal Caribbean Cruise Deck

Gratuities are added to guests’ onboard accounts daily and are shared among various staff members, including dining servers, stateroom attendants, and several behind-the-scenes positions who work very hard to ensure all passengers have a memorable cruise vacation.

According to Royal Caribbean’s website, “The automatic daily gratuity is based on customary industry standards. Applying this charge automatically helps streamline the recognition process for the crew members who work to enhance your cruise. We hope you find the gratuity to be an accurate reflection of your satisfaction and thank you for your generous recognition of our staff.”

It should be noted that the automatic gratuity applied to beverage purchases, mini-bar items, and spa and salon purchases is not changing and remains at 18% of the charge at this time.

Pre-Pay to Save

Guests who choose to pre-pay their gratuities prior to sailing will be able to do so at the previous, lower rate, at least for the time being. The language of pre-paying is unclear, and after November 11, 2023, it is possible that all guests – whether they are pre-paying or paying onboard – may be assessed gratuities at the increased rate.

This does give guests with future bookings the opportunity to pre-pay now, however, and take advantage of the lower rate. Onboard, no matter what the sailing date, guests who pre-pay are not assessed any additional gratuity charge other than for beverage purchases, items from their in-cabin mini-bar, or if they make purchases at the ship’s spa or salon.

Royal Caribbean does permit guests to modify the daily amount at their discretion onboard, “in the unlikely event that a guest onboard being charged the daily automatic gratuity rate does not receive satisfactory service.”

Passengers may pre-pay gratuities up to 48 hours before their cruise departure date. After that time, no pre-payment is possible and automatic gratuities will be charged to guests’ onboard accounts during their cruise.

Rates Now Comparable to Other Cruise Lines

With this rate increase, Royal Caribbean’s gratuities are indeed aligned similarly to other cruise lines.

Carnival Cruise Line, for example, charges service gratuities of $16 per person, per day in standard staterooms and $18 per person, per day in suites, while Norwegian Cruise Line charges $20 for the highest suite levels, $18 for mid-level suites, and $16 for all other stateroom types (all rates per person, per day).

Disney Cruise Line has noticeably lower rates of $14.50 per person, per day in most stateroom types, while concierge staterooms and suites are charged $15.50 per person, per day. Disney Cruise Line does already have notably higher fares than other cruise lines, however.

Once one cruise line raises rates, it may not be long before other cruise lines follow suit and travelers may see increases on other mainstream cruise lines in the coming weeks and months.

Carnival Cruise Line Addresses Bitterness Over Sweet Souvenir

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald has offered guests advice and commiseration about reportedly watered-down vanilla purchased in Cozumel, Mexico, but with a bittersweet reminder that the cruise line has no control or authority over local retailers in ports of call. How can travelers be sure they’re getting quality merchandise?

Carnival Cruise Line Deals With “Vanilla Gate”

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald fields hundreds of questions, comments, and requests from guests nearly every day. Some requests are simple, some are outrageous, and some spark great controversy among other loyal Carnival cruisers.

Lately, comments about a very popular souvenir – Mexican vanilla – have begun to be more forceful and distressing.

Apparently, some guests have been communicating that the vanilla they have purchased while on a cruise to Cozumel, Mexico, has actually been watered down and is of far inferior quality and what travelers come to expect from this sought-after flavoring, typically marketed as “double strength” “pure” “two-fold” “gourmet” or “baker’s vanilla” – sometimes all on the same label.

Guests have commented to Heald that shops selling the lesser quality vanilla should be shut down and that the cruise line should do something about the practice. Heald has graciously responded to the upset guests, being clear about the cruise line’s influence and responsibility.

“We do not own the shops in Cozumel, we don’t have any control over what they sell, and we cannot close them down,” Heald said. “Please shop carefully!”

The comments are apparently being associated only with Cozumel – the busiest cruise port in the world – but may also apply to vanilla purchases in other Mexican ports of call.

Is Vanilla Really Being Tampered With?

It is possible, however, that the impacted guests may have inadvertently purchased a different variety of vanilla with a different manufacturing process that may result in various concentrations or flavor profiles.

While unscrupulous practices and actual watering-down of the vanilla could also be at play, but no evidence of tampering or substitutions has been provided.

It is also possible that guests may be misreading labels or misunderstanding how the vanilla is bottled. It is common for the ingredients to include pure vanilla, ethyl alcohol (as a preservative), and water. This does not mean, however, that the vanilla is “watered down” or otherwise of lesser quality.

Cruise visitors should always be conscientious when they shop. Checking labels carefully, as well as noting whether the bottle’s seal is intact, is essential to ensure a safe and authentic purchase. Guests can also check the bottom of a bottle for any sign of tampering, such as unknown holes or punctures that could indicate a contaminated bottle.

Choosing to shop at port retailers in duty free areas is another way to help ensure one is buying authentic Mexican vanilla from a reputable retailer, rather than venturing outside the port area for an unlabeled and possibly unregulated store. The prices may be cheaper, but the quality may also be suspect.

Mexican vanilla is a popular souvenir for many cruise guests to buy, and often family members, friends, and neighbors may request a few extra bottles when they know someone is going on a cruise.

The “double strength” vanilla, made by using twice as many beans in the manufacturing process, is richly flavorful and can be used at half amounts in North American or European recipes (only half a teaspoon is needed if a teaspoon is called for in the recipe, for example). This makes using Mexican vanilla economically wise for many frequent or professional bakers.

Using the vanilla at full strength also adds a much stronger flavor to cakes, cookies, pies, fudges, and other recipes, but without extra liquid that could unbalance a delicate recipe or cause texture changes.

Mexican vanilla is also available in a clear variety, ensuring the flavoring does not discolor icing or dough so treats are true-to-color. Bottles are available in various sizes, so every traveler can stock up as needed for their own baking and cooking preferences.

Many bakers – even casual home cooks – are loyal to particular, time-tested ingredients. Once switching to Mexican vanilla, however, few will switch back to other varieties. Running low is a great reason to book another cruise to Mexico!

Royal Caribbean Clarifies Venue Access for Loyal Guests

After several recent changes to onboard exclusive lounges have led to confusion about which guests can access which lounge at which time, Royal Caribbean International has issued more clarification on the loyalty lounges.

While there are no further changes at this time, the clarification can help travelers better understand which spaces are available to enjoy.

Lounge Access Clarified

The Crown & Anchor Society Director, Courtney Brant, has reached out to members of Royal Caribbean’s loyalty program to clarify exclusive onboard lounge access.

The ability to enjoy an exclusive space with dedicated service and special events is a popular perk of the upper tiers of the Crown & Anchor Society, but more crowded ships and more passengers reaching top tier status is requiring some adjustments to who is able to access which lounge at different times.

“I know many of you have questions about a new policy we recently implemented on a small number of sailings, which makes temporary adjustments to the access of certain venues, such as the Crown Lounge, Suite and Concierge Lounges, Suite Sun Deck, and Coastal Kitchen,” Brant acknowledged.

Royal Caribbean Diamond Lounge
Royal Caribbean Diamond Lounge (Photo Credit: Jerry Sharp / Shutterstock)

Each of these spaces is reserved for certain cruisers, either depending on their loyalty status or what type of stateroom they have booked.

The Crown Lounge – formerly known as the Diamond Lounge – will only be available to Diamond Plus and Pinnacle Club members during the evening hours, with beverage service from 5-8 p.m.

Brant stresses, however, that “the lounge and its services will remain fully accessible to all Diamond and above members at all other times.”

The morning continental breakfast, daily snacks, and concierge service hours will still be available to all qualifying travelers.

Points May Determine Access

Similarly, the Suite Lounge or Concierge Lounge, Suite Sun Deck, and Coastal Kitchen will be limited to only guests in qualifying suites along with top Pinnacle Club members onboard, which will be determined based on cruise points.

This may mean that not all Pinnacle Club members on the same sailing may have access, depending on overall occupancy and how many points individual guests have accrued.

Royal Caribbean’s Pinnacle Club is the elite of the elite, and travelers must have a minimum of 700 cruise points to join those ranks. A guest with 900 points, however, would be granted Suite Lounge access before a traveler with 725 points, however, despite both being members of the Pinnacle Club with the same overall benefits.

Royal Caribbean Diamond Lounge
Royal Caribbean Diamond Lounge (Photo Credit: Joni Hanebutt / Shutterstock)

Access will also depend on how many suite guests are onboard each individual sailing, and how many total guests are in each Pinnacle Club guests’ stateroom. All guests in the room – even if they have not all achieved the same number of points – will be extended lounge privileges.

Changes Not Universal

All loyal Royal Caribbean cruisers should note that these restrictions to lounge access are both intermittent and temporary, and will vary greatly between individual sailings. On cruises with fewer suite staterooms or fewer top-tier loyalty members, for example, it may not be necessary to restrict access at all.

The cruises most likely to be impacted are those aboard the line’s newer vessels, particularly Wonder of the Seas and the two upcoming ships in 2024, Icon of the Seas in January and Utopia of the Seas in July.

Brand new ships always attract great interest from experienced cruisers who are eager to try out a new vessel and see what changes and innovations it brings to the fleet.

Similarly, certain sailings – maiden voyages, transatlantic crossings or transpacific cruises, holiday itineraries, etc. – are also more popular with experienced cruisers and may need more lounge access restrictions to compensate for that increased popularity.

Depending on how restrictions must be invoked, travelers will be notified either in the days before they set sail or else with a welcome aboard letter onboard as to any changes in lounge access or other loyalty benefits for their specific cruise.

Massive New Carnival Cruise Ship Completes Complex Milestone

Carnival Jubilee has set a fleet first before even officially joining Carnival Cruise Line as she has completed a tricky navigation of the river Ems in northwest Germany, reaching the North Sea where her sea trials will take place. The new ship is the first ever in the Carnival fleet to complete the conveyance, as the ship is the first to have been built by the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

Carnival Jubilee Conveyance Successful

The 182,800-gross-ton Carnival Jubilee successfully transferred down the River Ems from Papenburg, Germany to Eemshaven, Netherlands from early Monday morning, October 30, 2023, until her arrival in Eemshaven early Tuesday morning.

The tricky conveyance involved manuvering the massive ship not only through the river’s twists and turns, under a number of bridges, and through narrow channels, but also sailing backward for better navigation along the challenging route.

Two tugboats supported the journey and assisted with maneuvering as needed, and a group of Ems River pilots from the Pilot Brotherhood of Emden led the procedure with their expertise and state-of-the-art technology.

Sea Trials Just Days Away

With Carnival Jubilee now successfully at the mouth of the river in the Wadden Sea, preparations are underway for her first round of sea trials – slated to begin on Sunday, November 5, 2023.

The ship’s sea trials will test her full functional capabilities, from straight cruising to emergency stops, turns of different degrees and swiftness, navigation, maximum speed, and much more. These tests are critical to ensure all the ship’s systems are functioning properly and work together for most efficient operation.

Carnival Jubilee

The length of sea trials can vary from just a day or two to as long as two weeks, depending on the extent of the testing, local weather conditions that may cause delays, and how the ship performs, including whether or not any individual tests need to be redone.

During the sea trials, the ship’s full complement of officers, technicians, and engineers will be onboard for the testing as well as to begin familiarizing themselves with the vessel’s operation, layout, and procedures. After successful testing, Carnival Jubilee will be one step closer to her December 23, 2023 maiden voyage from Galveston, Texas.

Completion Work Continues

Even as the sea trials get underway, Carnival Jubilee is continuing to be refined as shipbuilders onboard the vessel continue with finishing details and interior work.

This includes décor for the ship’s different venues, including her ocean-themed “Currents” and “Shores” neighborhoods and their immersive artwork, LED lighting, and unique sound designs.

Seating, fixtures, and signage is being put in place for the new and exclusive Dr. Inks, Ph.D and Golden Mermaid bars, as well as the popular Emeril’s Bistro 717 – a variation of the Emeril’s installations onboard Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration.

Finishing touches are also being put on the Ultimate Playground with BOLT, the Ultimate Sea Coaster, the ship’s SportSquare facilities, and the WaterWorks aqua park, not to mention the intimate and immersive Grand Central space, the fan favorite Guy’s Burger Joint, and so much more the ship will offer.

Debut Less Than Two Months Away

Carnival Jubilee is scheduled to welcome guests for the first time on December 23, 2023 with her first sailing, a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise from Galveston. In addition to three full days at sea for passengers to enjoy all the new ship has to offer, the itinerary includes visits to Roatan, Honduras and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.

The new ship will remain homeported in Galveston year-round at least through April 2026 offering the same 7-night itinerary, though port orders change depending on departure date. On each sailing, the ship will be able to welcome 5,282 guests at double occupancy, or as many as 6,465 travelers when fully booked.

Bringing the Excel-class vessel to Galveston shows Carnival Cruise Line’s commitment to the Lone Star State, as does the ship’s unique bow decoration that will forever connect her to the Texas homeport.

It will indeed be a jubilant day when the new ship arrives in Texas in less than two months!
