Royal Caribbean Officially Orders New Discovery Class Cruise Ships

Key Aspects:

  • Royal Caribbean has signed agreements with Chantiers de l’Atlantique for the new Discovery Class of ships.
  • No details have been yet been confirmed about the size or design of the new class.
  • The first Discovery Class ship will set sail in 2029 and the second in 2032, with four more optioned for the future.

The long-standing rumor whispered through social media and onboard some of the world’s largest cruise ships is now confirmed: Royal Caribbean has officially announced the new Discovery Class of ships in agreement with the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France.

Two orders have now been made with the first of the new class to debut in 2029, followed by her sister ship with delivery in 2032. The orders are subject to standard conditions, including financing arrangements.

“The Discovery Class represents our continued commitment to shaping the future of vacations,” said Jason Liberty, Chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group. “These ships will be a showcase of what’s possible when design meets purpose, ultimately bringing the world closer to our guests.”

The agreements include options for four additional ships, but no expected dates are yet announced for those future vessels because they are not officially ordered.

No further details have been announced about the class, but rumors abound. With Royal Caribbean having focused on bigger-is-better ships since the Oasis Class debuted in 2009, the most prevalent expectation is that the Discovery Class will be smaller both in gross tonnage and guest capacity.

This idea is supported by the language being used to describe the new class, including the name itself: allowing guests to better “discover” the world, ports of call, and amazing cruise memories.

“The Discovery Class introduces a bold new concept that puts our guests at the center of it all,” said Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean.

“It will deliver extraordinary, one-of-a-kind experiences — from cutting edge design to immersive moments — every detail crafted to surprise and delight guests in ways they’ve never imagined, all while visiting truly breathtaking destinations around the world.”

The shipyard itself confirms just how different the new ships will be from vessels currently in the fleet.

“Royal Caribbean Group has been keenly focused on disrupting the vacation industry with their innovative and bold vacation offerings,” said Laurent Castaing, Chief Executive Officer, Chantiers de l’Atlantique.

“Partnering with Jason and Michael to bring the Discovery Class to life is an opportunity to showcase the future of shipbuilding. Together, we are shaping a new generation of ocean vacations that will lead the industry toward a more innovative future.”

Discovering More Itinerary Options

It is likely that if the new class is a smaller, more intimate ship, Royal Caribbean may introduce more port-forward itinerary options to unique destinations or entirely new sailing regions.

The great success of the 274-night World Cruise in 2023-2024 aboard Serenade of the Seas showcased just how eager cruisers are for more unique opportunities and unusual destinations. For context, the 90,090-gross-ton Serenade of the Seas is one of the smaller ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet and first debuted in 2003.

Loyal-to-Royal guests are reacting eagerly to the announcement, hopeful for new ports to explore.

“Great news, hopefully starting a trend of returning to smaller ships that can get into smaller and more interesting ports,” one guest commented.

“This is very exciting news. Cant wait to see what this means for cruising in Asia, Australia and the Pacific,” another hoped.

Long History With Chantiers de l’Atlantique

What is not a surprise about the new class announcement is the partnership with Chantiers de l’Atlantique to design and build the new vessels.

In 1985, Chantiers de l’Atlantique built Sovereign of the Seas, and in the past 40 years, the shipyard has added 21 ships to the Royal Caribbean Group, including Harmony of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas, and Utopia of the Seas as well as Celebrity Xcel and Celebrity Ascent.

“Through our partnership with Chantiers de l’Atlantique, we are leveraging France’s world‑class shipbuilding ecosystem and new technology to, once again, reimagine the industry for decades to come,” said Liberty.

Reimaging will be key, as Royal Caribbean is well known for adding new features and design elements to make its vessels truly one of a kind.

“These ships are going to change everything!” Bayley confirmed.

In addition to their vessels with Royal Caribbean Group, Chantiers de l’Atlantique has also constructed unique and innovative ships for other cruise lines, including MSC Cruises’ MSC World America and Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2.

New details about the exciting new class are sure to be announced in the months to come; stay tuned to Cruise Hive for all the updates!

Cruise Line Apologizes After Autistic Guest Was Removed From Cruise in Mexico

Key Aspects:

  • A mother is speaking out after her adult son with autism was kicked off a Celebrity Cruise ship due to a misunderstanding.
  • He was booted from the ship on Christmas Eve in Cozumel, Mexico.
  • Royal Caribbean Group apologized to the family and promised additional training for crew members.

A New Jersey mother is speaking out after her autistic son was kicked off a cruise ship during a Christmas cruise.

Carolyn Piro’s family was enjoying a 7-night Caribbean sailing onboard a Celebrity Cruise ship to celebrate the holidays and Piro’s 60th birthday. For context, Celebrity Cruises is a sister brand to Royal Caribbean.

It’s unclear which specific ship the family was onboard, but itinerary details suggest that Celebrity Xcel is a likely candidate for the Florida-based sailing.

Piro was traveling with her eldest son, Sean Curran, who is 31-years-old with Autism. The mother also had her three other sons onboard to celebrate, one of whom has mosaic Down syndrome and another has fragile X syndrome.

All was well until four days into the cruise when Curran was kicked off the ship in Cozumel, Mexico, on Christmas Eve after his attempts to be nice to another passenger went very wrong.

“With all of the information about autism, there was no compassion. They treated him as a fully functioning adult,” Piro said to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Curran’s mother and another sibling disembarked with him to help Curran make his way back to Florida, where they reunited with the rest of the family when the sailing disembarked.

What Went Wrong?

Autism is a spectrum and functionality and understanding varies from person to person. It’s unclear how the disorder specifically affects Curran.

According to Piro, her son was asked by an unidentified teenage girl to buy her a Long Island iced tea. Allegedly, Curran did not know that this drink contained alcohol and happily complied with her request.

Curran was alone at the time the girl approached him because he had been on three other sailings and his family felt that he was capable of roaming independently.

He continued to socialize with the minor in one of the ship’s hot tubs, where the girl allegedly touched his chest and stomach and used inappropriate profane language. He also playfully carried the girl.

Confronted By Security

The girl’s parents found the duo in the hot tub and began yelling at Curran, who was quickly escorted to a security office. Piro joined him there to advocate for her son.

“I have autism and I was just trying to be nice,” Curran wrote in a statement that was given to the ship’s security team.

Ultimately, security leadership decided that Curran would have 90 minutes to pack his bags and debark from the cruise ship early.

The family was initially only given an incident report and told that the FBI and Homeland Security would be notified of what had occurred. No charges were ever filed.

Piro did discipline Curran once they returned home. She continues to insist that his behaviors were wrong and needed to be corrected, but did not come from a place of malicious intent.

A Not-So Autism Friendly Cruise Experience

Part of the reason the family chose Celebrity Cruises is that the brand is known for being accessible for guests with autism, which is also what makes this experience extra disappointing for them.

“We’ve proudly achieved the Autism Friendly Cruise Line status, having completed certification with Autism on the Seas,” Celebrity Cruises’ website states.

“This is awarded to cruise lines that ensure their products and services are accessible for participation by the autism and developmental disability community.”

Piro says the family also did their best to plan ahead for accommodating the different needs in their travel party, such as requesting special seating in the dining room to keep the family separated from loud noises and larger groups.

Royal Caribbean Apologizes

After Piro spoke out about this unfortunate incident, Royal Caribbean apologized and said that its crew members would be better trained on how to deal with guests who have mental disabilities.

While Royal Caribbean has a zero-tolerance policy for behaviors that could potentially endanger other guests or crew members, this was a unique situation because Curran did not fully understand what he was doing.

The company “concluded we could have been more sensitive to [the family’s] needs during the debarkation process,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The spokesperson also said that crew members would receive additional training to “ensure this experience doesn’t happen again.”

Piro has also asked to be reimbursed for the $20,000 she spent on the cruise and related expenses, but it’s unclear if Royal Caribbean will grant this request at this time.

Carnival Venezia Guests Notified of Early Itinerary Shift for Southern Caribbean Cruise

Key Aspects:

  • Carnival Venezia is adjusting two ports on her February 21, 2027 sailing.
  • Both Antigua and St. Kitts are being shifted in days and times, but the ports are not cancelled.
  • No other ports on the 14-night Southern Caribbean cruise are affected at this time.

Carnival Cruise Line has alerted guests booked on Carnival Venezia‘s February 21, 2027 sailing that they have a slight itinerary change to be aware of, though no ports are being cancelled.

The 14-night cruise is a Southern Caribbean voyage from Port Canaveral, with visits to eight amazing ports of call. Two of those ports are shifting their visit dates and times, but Carnival Venezia will still be at the outstanding destinations.

“We have made a slight adjustment to your itinerary,” the email notification confirmed. “The days visiting Antigua and St. Kitts have changed with adjusted port times.”

Originally, Carnival Venezia was to have enjoyed the visit to Antigua on Wednesday, February 24, 2027, while the visit to St. Kitts was to have a week later been near the end of the voyage on Wednesday, March 3. Both visits were scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The updated itinerary dates and times will be published on Carnival Cruise Line’s website as soon as the details are finalized. Given that the sailing is more than a year away, there should be no difficulty for guests to rearrange any plans they might have for either port visit day.

Other ports on the immersive Carnival Journeys itinerary include St. Thomas, Dominica, Grenada, Barbados, St. Maarten, and San Juan.

Carnival Journeys cruises are sailings more than 10 nights. In addition to visiting more unique destinations, these cruises also include more themed programming and activities onboard, including popular “throwback” events to long-since-gone fan favorites and other fun.

Shore Tours to Be Adjusted

Early cruise planners who have already booked pre-paid shore excursions through Carnival don’t need to worry, as the cruise line will automatically adjust those tours for the new port days and times.

Exactly when that adjustment will happen isn’t clear, but the notification assures guests that it will be taken care of “prior to sailing.”

If, however, guests have arranged for independent tours or transportation with local operators, they will want to reach out to those companies to update their plans once the new visit information is confirmed. Again, since this change is made so far in advance of the ship’s departure date, such updates should not be difficult.

As a matter of interest, a similar 14-night itinerary in February 2026 has no changes at this time, nor are any other longer itineraries confirmed to be adjusted.

Why the Change for Carnival Venezia?

Carnival Cruise Line does not offer details about exactly why the two ports of call have been adjusted. Such itinerary tweaks are not uncommon, however, especially well ahead of a sailing when there is plenty of time for plans to change without much difficulty.

It is possible that overall berth availability might be a concern as more ships get scheduled for future visits, or else port maintenance plans might now impact a previously confirmed visit.

For example, if pier maintenance or construction is necessary or if harbor dredging is planned, that would most definitely have an impact on how and when ships could visit. Those plans are up to the port, not the cruise line, and may not be known when a cruise line initially plans and confirms future itineraries.

Carnival Venezia homeports from Port Canaveral in the winter, offering 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages, as well as the occasional longer Southern Caribbean sailing.

The 135,225-gross-ton, Vista-class ship can welcome 4,208 guests at double occupancy or up to 5,260 travelers when fully booked. Also onboard are roughly 1,200 international crew members eager to ensure everyone has an amazing cruise getaway, no matter what the itinerary may be.

Bahamas Reveals MSC’s Bold Plan for a New $450 Million Cruise Development

Key Aspects:

  • MSC Cruises appears poised to develop a new cruise terminal in Freeport, Bahamas.
  • The Bahamas’ prime minister puts the investment at $450 million.
  • The new terminal is to be built on an existing man-made island in Freeport Harbor.

Envisioning a lucrative future on Grand Bahama Island, MSC Cruises is making a major investment in Freeport Harbor, where it plans to build a new cruise facility and beach club.

In a media update about development across the island, Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis revealed some details about the cruise line’s plans for Grand Bahama’s cruise-tourism industry.

Those plans, according to the January 27, 2026, statement, include an estimated investment by MSC Cruises of $450 million. A new cruise terminal proposed for the Billy Cay property, a man-made island in the middle of Freeport Harbor, will be allocated $400 million, while the remaining $50 million will go toward a beach club and the renovation of the harbor’s retail village area.

The renovation will include cruise ship berths, food and entertainment areas, and other visitor-focused services such as a transportation logistics center, likely for shore excursions and independent island tours.

The project is designed as a multi-user facility, supporting operational flexibility and positioning Grand Bahama to capture greater cruise activity, higher passenger volumes, and wider economic spillover into transportation, hospitality, culture, and small business, said Philip Davis, prime minister of the Bahamas.

The broader role MSC continues to play in strengthening Grand Bahama as a serious maritime and logistics hub,Davis added.

He noted, too, that MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company), the cruise brand’s owner, has already invested in upgrades to the Freeport Container Port. MSC is the world’s largest container shipping operator.

The prime minister indicated that the Bahamas and MSC Cruises had signed an agreement, but MSC Cruises has not commented on plans for the cruise terminal development.

MSC Cruises Also Investing in Marine Reserve Upgrades

MSC Cruises is hyper-focused on broadening its presence in the Bahamas, a goal welcomed by government officials looking to expand the country’s cruise industry.

Their efforts are working. In addition to its plans for the Billy Cay property, MSC Cruises announced on January 28, 2026 it will finance enhancements to MSC Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, its private island destination in Bimini, Bahamas.

Multiple new dining venues, an expanded cruise ship pier, a family beach area, and an adult-only retreat are all part of the plans to upgrade the reserve. The changes are due to be completed by late 2027.

MSC Cruises offers voyages to Grand Bahama Island, including aboard the 4,488-guest MSC Meraviglia in November 2026. A combination 4- and 10-night cruise sails roundtrip from Miami on November 11, 2026.

The 4-night cruise calls at the line’s marine reserve and at Freeport before returning to PortMiami. Guests booked on the 10-night sailing remain onboard to enjoy additional port calls at Turks & Caicos, Nassau, Bahamas, and another visit to the reserve.

MSC Cruises is not alone in betting big on the Bahamas, as virtually all of the major brands have a presence there. Carnival Cruise Line in summer 2026 opened its $600 million Celebration Key, a private destination on Grand Bahama Island.

Royal Caribbean features its Perfect Day at CocoCay on a private island in the Bahamas, along with Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay and Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay, among several others.

MSC Cruises Announces Big Enhancements and Pier Extension at Ocean Cay

Key Aspects:

  • MSC Cruises is adding new family-friendly and adults-only features to Ocean Cay.
  • The current pier is being extended to accommodate two ships at once.
  • A second private island is also in development nearby, but few details are known at this time.

MSC Cruises’ private island destination in the Bahamas, MSC Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, is a favorite port visit for guests, and it’s about to get even more amazing with new upgrades and the ability to welcome more ships by late 2027.

The cruise line announced on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 that new upgrades are now underway, with “new facilities to enhance the guest experience.” But what experiences are being enhanced?

All of them! First, four new dining venues will be added around the island. While menus have not been released, the new offerings will include buffets, food market options, and a signature specialty restaurant. This will undoubtedly offer more dining options for guests will all types of dietary needs and preferences, while ensuring lines remain short and manageable.

The popular Seakers Cove Family Beach area will also be thoroughly upgraded with exciting new features. A kid’s playground and splash pad with fountains will be added for the youngest cruisers, while more adventurous guests can tackle the ropes course with slides, towers, and water elements sure to test balance and daring.

The whole family will enjoy new ping-pong and foosball, great options for all ages and multi-generational fun with tournaments and other interactive games.

For adults who want a quieter getaway for oceanside relaxation, Paradise Sands will be an adults-only retreat with a quiet beach featuring plentiful loungers and perfect sunset views.

Throughout the island, more cabanas of different sizes and styles will be added, giving guests even more chances for exclusive luxury that will define their perfect way to relax.

New Marine Conservation Experience Coming

Of special note is MSC Cruises’ ongoing commitment to conservation at Ocean Cay. From its first opening in December 2019, the island has had a focus on conservation and restoration. In fact, the island was formerly an industrial site for sand excavation that the cruise line restored to its natural beauty with a diverse and flourishing marine ecosystem.

Coming with the new enhancements will be a brand new “Shifting Perspective” marine conservation experience. This interactive encounter invites guests to explore different conservation approaches with immersive, hands-on activities.

From coral restoration to exploration of different oceanic ecosystems, the experience focuses on scientific discover, conservation, and preservation, helping guests connect to the water and marine life that makes MSC Ocean Cay Marine Reserve so special and unique.

Pier Extension to Accommodate Two Ships

With so many great things to come by the time the enhancements are finished in late 2027, a high priority is expanding the pier capacity to welcome more than one ship at a time.

Construction work to extend the pier is already underway and due for completion next year. This will ensure that multiple vessels can visit the popular private island, a critical need as MSC Cruises continues to expand its North American presence following the opening of its Miami headquarters just days ago.

With even more MSC ships coming to North America when MSC World Atlantic debuts from Port Canaveral in November 2027, the extended pier will be essential for more guests to enjoy the destination.

A New Island Coming?

As a special note, MSC Cruises has confirmed the development of a second private island destination as well.

“This as-yet-unnamed island, known internally as Little Cay, will stay true to the ethos of Ocean Cay, offering an experience that connects guests to nature, pristine beaches, and the beauty of the ocean plus luxury facilities and water features,” the cruise line said.

The new destination is “adjacent” to Ocean Cay but is a separate piece of property. No further details have been revealed, including any possible features, whether or not it will be an entirely separate destination or if guests can visit while docked at Ocean Cay, or when it might debut.

Stay tuned to Cruise Hive in the coming weeks and months as more details are released!

Carnival’s Zero Proof Drink Package is Finally Available for All 2026 Sailings

Key Aspects:

  • The Cheers! Zero Proof Drink Package is now available for all Carnival sailings in 2026 in North America and Australia.
  • Guests have been questioning Brand Ambassador John Heald for weeks about when the package would become available.
  • The news has also reinvigorated frustrations about Australia not getting all the same perks as US cruisers.

After weeks of waiting (and pestering brand Ambassador John Heald), Carnival Cruise Line has finally made the new Cheers! Zero Proof Drink Package available for purchase for all 2026 sailings based in North America and Australia.

As of January 27, 2026, the package can be purchased by all cruisers embarking on 2026 sailings throughout North America, Australia, and New Zealand.

While many are excited to secure their packages, this news has also brought old frustrations about what is included, especially for passengers based in the Land Down Under.

“Here is the direct link for you for sailings from North America for the zero proof program. It should now be open for all of you,Heald posted, along with a link to the drink package on Carnival’s US website.

“Good morning Australia. Here is the direct link to your Cheers Zero Proof package which is now open for all sailings,” Heald said in a subsequent post.

In addition to booking through Carnival’s website, guests can also book through the HUB App or by calling the cruise line’s customer service team.

Impatient Guests Pestered John Heald

The first-of-its-kind non-alcoholic drink package debuted in September 2025, and was initially only available to purchase for sailings embarking through the end of the year.

In November 2025, the package became available for purchase through the first quarter of 2026, which includes cruises setting sail in January, February, and March.

Carnival Cruise Line Zero Proof Drink Package
Carnival Cruise Line Zero Proof Drink Package

But this wasn’t quick enough for eager guests sailing later in the year, who repeatedly pestered Heald on his public Facebook page about when the purchasing window would expand again.

“In the last seven days, hundreds of you have asked me, yes hundreds of you asked me when we will open it up for the rest of 2026,” Heald lamented in a post on January 19, 2026.

As the classic Cheers! Drink Package can usually be purchased immediately after booking, the waiting game is not a typical part of the Carnival experience.

Differences Between the US and Australia

The Zero Proof package has similar offerings across North America and Australia, though there are some key regional differences that are leading to debate and frustration.

Most notably, Australia’s version of the package does not include premium teas and coffees, while the North American package does.

Some also noticed that bubble tea and slushies that were previously included in drink packages are no longer available at the links that Heald shared.

“Specialty coffee? Bubble tea? What’s going on here? Even McDonald’s knows Australian’s love coffee and therefore opened their very first McCafe in the world, here in Australia,” one cruiser said.

“Once again overpriced and not the full package for Australia, we really get the short end of stick here since Carnival took over,” another guest complained.

These drinks are still available onboard Carnival ships in Australia and New Zealand, but must be purchased separately.

Is the Zero Proof Drink Package Worth It?

This non-alcoholic drink package costs $29.99 per person, per day, and must be purchased for the entirety of the sailing. An additional 20% service charge is added to all drink packages as well.

Guests will ultimately have to decide if this investment makes sense for them and their consumption habits, which can be calculated using the Cruise Hive Cruise Drinks Package Calculator.

Additionally, keep in mind that guests staying in the same stateroom can’t mix and match packages, meaning one cruiser can’t get the Cheers! Package while their travel companion picks the Zero Proof option.

But unlike the Cheers! drink package, which includes alcohol, not everyone in the same cruise cabin has to purchase the Zero Proof package once one person does.

Legend of the Seas Will Debut Earlier, New Sailing Added

Key Aspects:

  • Legend of the Seas will now debut on July 11, 2026, a week earlier than previously planned.
  • This is the second time the ship’s inaugural sailing has been moved earlier.
  • Guests booked on the July 11 cruise have the option to move their sailing to July 4 if preferred.

Construction and outfitting is moving along at a truly legendary pace for Royal Caribbean’s upcoming third Icon-class ship, Legend of the Seas, and a new first sailing has now been added.

The ship will now debut on July 4, 2026, one week earlier than her initial July 11 maiden voyage and nearly a full month before the original August 2 debut date.

Royal Caribbean has reached out to guests booked on the July 11 sailing to give them the opportunity to move to the earlier voyage if they prefer. For many cruise guests, the privilege of being part of a ship’s maiden voyage is truly a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list adventure.

“We simply cannot wait to show off The Next Icon of Vacations,” the email notification reads. “We have no added one (1) extra sailing, a 7-Night Western Mediterranean Cruise on 4 July 2026, that will be the inaugural sailing to kick off the celebrations for our inaugural season!”

This new inaugural sailing will depart from Rome (Civitavecchia) and visit Marseille, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, and Florence before returning to Rome on July 11.

Legend of the Seas is currently under construction at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland. The ship still needs to be finished, complete her sea trials, and be handed over to the cruise line, but everything is ahead of schedule for her to join the fleet with great fanfare.

Booked Guests Can Set Sail Early

To be clear, the July 11 departure is unchanged, this new sailing is simply welcoming guests one week earlier. If that first-aboard feeling is especially important to guests, however, they do have an option to change their sailing date.

“As you may have booked your Legend of the Seas sailing to be first onboard, you’ll now have the opportunity to move your existing booking to the first 5-Night Western Mediterranean Cruise as of today!” the email explained.

Transfers to the earlier sailing are on a first-come, first-served basis and will be made in the same stateroom or, where necessary, a like-for-like stateroom.

Royal Caribbean's Legend of the Seas

The original price guests booked for the July 11 voyage is protected, but if the July 4 sailing is actually a lower fare, the lower price will apply and any overage will be refunded back to the original form of payment.

Guests will still be responsible for taxes, fees, and any add-ons such as drink packages, pre-paid gratuities, and shore tours at the prevailing rates for the new sailing date.

If guests are interested in moving to the earlier sailing and booked airfare through Royal Caribbean’s Air2Sea program, the team will adjust flights as necessary. Those guests who made independent arrangements for airfare or hotels can submit receipts for reimbursement for up to $200 (USD) for domestic travel or $400 for international travel, per person.

Will the July 11 Sailing Still Be Special?

Because an inaugural cruise is such a unique and truly once-in-a-ship’s-lifetime event, guests who cannot move to the earlier July 4 departure are naturally concerned about whether or not their July 11 departure will still have that special feel.

“Not to worry, our 11 July sailing that is part of our showcase will still take place,” the email confirmed.

Fortunately, cruise lines no longer treat just a single voyage as special, but the entire first season of a ship’s service has a unique and unforgettable feel with special souvenir swag, exclusive inaugural merchandise, and all sorts of fun onboard.

This ensures that more people can experience the unique opportunity to welcome a new ship to the fleet, and it helps assuage any disappointment when plans have to change, as they have for Legend of the Seas.

In fact, this is not the first time the ship’s debut has been moved earlier. In September 2025, Royal Caribbean announced three earlier sailings departing July 11, July 18, and July 25.

Similar offers were made for booked guests to adjust their sailing date if desired, giving everyone the opportunity to be the “first” aboard what will truly be a legendary cruise ship.

Two New Venues Change the Dining Landscape on Diamond Princess

Key Aspects:

  • Specialty dining venues Makoto Ocean and Crown Grill were added to Princess Cruises’ Diamond Princess.
  • Diamond Princess is based year-round in East Asia, with most guests hailing from the region.
  • Makoto Grill was formed in partnership with celebrity chef Makoto Okuwa.

The number of specialty dining venues aboard Princess Cruises’ Diamond Princess has grown, with the 2,670-guest ship now offering Makoto Ocean and Crown Grill.

The restaurants were added as the Gem-class ship continues her deployment in East Asia, adding more choices for guests who enjoy Japanese delicacies as well as American-style steaks and chops.

Princess Cruises announced its plan to add the two venues in August 2025. Makoto Ocean debuted on Sun Princess and Star Princess when the two new-builds debuted in 2024 and 2025, respectively. The dining spot was also added to Sapphire Princess in late 2025.

The venue was created in partnership with celebrity Chef Makoto Okuwa, who is famous for his Edomae-style sushi and owns six restaurants in the US, Brazil, Spain, and Panama.

On Diamond Princess, Makoto Ocean replaces Kai Sushi in a space situated on Deck 7. The venue’s entrees and cocktails appear to be a perfect fit for Diamond Princess, since the ship sails East Asia year-round and attracts the lion’s share of guests from the region.

Guests can dine on regional specialties such as Miso Sea Bass, Truffle Salmon, and Yellowtail Sashimi, while enjoying drinks like Makoto Gin & Tonic, Nagoya Negroni, and Murasaki Margarita.

Crown Grill, meanwhile, has been a longtime guest favorite aboard Princess ships since its debut in 2013 aboard Royal Princess. The venue offers some chicken and seafood dishes, but is primarily known for its sirloin, strip, and rib-eye steaks, and filet mignon.

Crown Grill was also added in late 2025 to Sapphire Princess, which is due to join Diamond Princess in East Asia from March to December 2027. Princess Cruises announced that the sister ships — both are Gem class and were built in Japan — would serve the Asia market together for the first time.

With Makoto Ocean and Crown Grill now onboard Diamond Princess, and also recently added onboard sister ship Sapphire Princess, we’re proud to enhance the guest experience as Diamond Princess sails across Asia and as we look ahead to our dual-ship Japan season in 2027,said Sami Kohen, Vice President of Food and Beverage at Princess Cruises.

The two ships will sail 50 itineraries and offer 78 departures between them, with cruises from seven to 28 days. The dual deployment in East Asia is a first for the cruise line.

Two Ships to Feature Japanese Festivals, Cherry Blossoms

The wide range of itineraries offered on Diamond Princess and Sapphire Princess in 2027 will allow guests to celebrate Japan’s summer festivals as well as its spring cherry blossom season.

Several “Cherry Blossom Voyages” are timed to coincide with the blooming season, as ships travel south to north, calling at Japan’s four largest islands.

Diamond Princess currently sails roundtrip from Singapore, and in February 2026 she will reposition to Yokohama, Japan, for a series of roundtrip voyages of varying lengths. Her 10-night Japan Explorer cruise features visits to Toba, Osaka, Kochi, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Shimizu, Japan, and Busan, South Korea.

Both Makoto Ocean and Crown Grill carry an upcharge of $55 per person and are included for guests booking the Princess Premier Package, a set of inclusive amenities that costs $129 per person, per day.

The package covers several key services besides unlimited specialty dining, such as unlimited drinks, a Wi-Fi plan, room service delivery, and shore excursion credits up to $300 per person, among other perks.

Urgent Diversion Leads to Last-Minute Port Swap on Freedom of the Seas

Key Aspects:

  • A medical emergency unfolded onboard Freedom of the Seas.
  • The Royal Caribbean ship made an early return to PortMiami to disembark the ailing guest on January 26, 2026.
  • Because of the diversion, the planned call to Grand Turk is no longer possible and has been replaced.

A medical emergency onboard Freedom of the Seas has led to an abrupt end to the sailing for one passenger and an altered itinerary for everyone else, with Royal Caribbean officially confirming a port change.

The Royal Caribbean ship is currently in the middle of a 5-night Caribbean sailing that embarked in Miami, Florida, on January 24, 2026.

The 3,926-guest ship wasn’t supposed to return to its homeport until January 29, so many were surprised to wake up in the early morning hours of January 26 to find that they were back in PortMiami.

The ship had diverted from its itinerary to evacuate an ailing guest who required hospitalization. A guest who appears to be the unidentified man’s wife disembarked with him.

His diagnosis and prognosis are unknown, but it must be serious as two ambulances were waiting to meet the ship.

“DUE TO MEDICAL EMERGENCY Early this morning 01.26.2026, FREEDOM OF THE SEAS SAILED and Docked Back In Miami at 3:00 AM to drop of the Passenger,” one current guest shared on social media.

“We watched the Emergency medical staff roll out a stretcher from the Smaller ambulance to the Ship. And watched them roll out with a gentleman on it… The ambulance drove out immediately afterwards,” the guest continued.

The evacuation took place at the new MSC Cruise Terminal, where MSC Seaside docked later that morning at approximately 7 a.m.

Second Port Swapped

At the time the emergency unfolded, the Freedom-class ship had already called to Nassau, Bahamas, on January 25 and was on its way to George Town, Grand Cayman, on December 27.

Because of the diversion, there simply was not enough time for the 2006-launched ship to make it to Grand Cayman.

George Town is approximately 830 nautical miles from PortMiami, which is a distance that would take Freedom of the Seas around 38 hours to cover – even when sailing at top speeds of 22 knots.

Instead, the call to Grand Cayman was cancelled and replaced with a day in Freeport on Grand Bahama Island on Wednesday, January 28.

“Late yesterday evening, our medical staff determined that one of our guests needed urgent medical attention, and we headed back to Miami, Florida, to safely debark them,” Royal Caribbean said in an official update.

“As a result, we’ll now enjoy a Sea Day tomorrow instead of visiting George Town, Grand Cayman, and we’ll visit Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas, on Wednesday,” the cruise line continued.

Freeport is just under 100 nautical miles from PortMiami, which is a much more doable distance.

Why the Diversion?

Some guests may also be wondering why Royal Caribbean diverted the ship rather than coordinating with the US Coast Guard for an airlift or evacuation at sea.

Many factors come into play when making these decisions, but it ultimately comes down to how quickly the guest needs shoreside care and what will be the most efficient way to get them there.

Weather and resource availability also come into play. Portions of Florida were temporarily under a tornado warning due to Winter Storm Fern, which was at its worst on January 25-26, 2026.

Even so, Florida wasn’t hit quite as hard as other US East Coast states. Because of this, they sent some of their resources up North to assist states like Georgia and South Carolina with their damage.

But more likely than not, the biggest decision maker was probably that the fastest and easiest way to get the struggling guest prompt treatment was to return to PortMiami.

While the cruise disruption may be frustrating to some, keep in mind that Royal Caribbean has to prioritize health and safety and would make the same choices for any passenger in distress.
