Cruise Dreams Crushed After Booking Error at Travel Agency

A mother and daughter’s longed-awaited cruise aboard a P&O Cruises ship never left the port – all because of a travel agency oversight.

Ruby Poole, 87, and her daughter, Wendy Tucker, 63, arrived in Southampton, England, on May 24, 2025, for a 7-night cruise around the Norwegian Fjords aboard P&O Britannia.

The dream trip was meant to take the women to Haugesund, Skjolden, Lustrafjorden, Sognefjord, Stavanger, and Kristiansand, Norway, with two sea days before returning to Southampton on May 30.

According to Poole, who told her local newspaper, the Hereford Times, the cruise had been a lifelong dream. She had never traveled by ship and uses a wheelchair following a stroke 11 years ago.

But when mother and daughter arrived at the terminal, they were told they could not board. The issue? Their tickets did not include the required assisted boarding designation, and the ship did not have enough safety chairs onboard to accommodate Poole.

Safety chairs are specialized chairs that ships keep on board to transport people with mobility issues down stairs during emergencies.

“We went to Southampton in a taxi, we were excited, our cases were taken and put on the ship, and we were taken to board, and a man said to us, ‘We are very sorry, but you can’t come onboard as we have not got enough safety chairs,’” Tucker told the Hereford Times.

She said her mom was “in the terminal, sobbing her heart out.”

Tucker said the cruise had been arranged through a travel agency in Basingstoke, England, and that the staff there assured them that assisted boarding and an accessible cabin had been arranged.

However, it turned out the proper designation was not selected in the booking system, and their tickets did not reflect their accessibility needs.

The pair received a refund for the £2,400 trip but were left without the vacation and called the ordeal “devastating.”

The travel agency, Hays Travel, admitted the error and issued a statement to the newspaper.

“We always acknowledge when something has gone wrong and will adapt our colleagues’ training if required,” it read. “In this instance, our customer did not receive the level of service that they should expect from Hays Travel, for which we are sorry.”

The agency offered Tucker and Poole £100 compensation, which Tucker called “disgusting.”

“They didn’t press the right button to say that my mum was in a wheelchair,” she said in frustration.

A spokesperson for P&O Cruises also issued a statement, expressing regret that the guests were unable to sail.

“We’re very sorry Wendy and her mother weren’t able to go on their holiday, but I’m glad to hear our port team handled the situation well and that they’ve now received a refund,” the cruise line told local media.

Tucker and her mother are now warning others to carefully check travel documents and not rely solely on verbal assurances when booking through travel agents.

“It was our first time booking a cruise,” Tucker said. “So, we didn’t know what to check.”

Navigating Wheelchair Needs on a Cruise

Passengers who use wheelchairs or mobility scooters must be careful when booking and boarding a cruise. Cruise lines like P&O Cruises and its parent company, Carnival Corporation’s other cruise lines, have strict policies to ensure safety.

For example, Carnival Cruise Line requires that scooters fit through cabin doorways – 22 inches for standard rooms and up to 32 inches for accessible cabins. Oversized equipment may result in denied boarding.

Guests with powered mobility devices must be booked into fully accessible cabins to ensure proper storage and access.

Accessible cabins are limited aboard ships and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, so early booking is important. These cabins offer roll-in showers and maneuverable space.

Onboard, public areas are generally wheelchair-friendly with wide gangways, accessible seating areas, and elevators.

All Ports Cancelled for Disabled Cruise Ship Following a Fire

When travelers plan a cruise vacation, particularly to such a port-dense region as the eastern Mediterranean and Greek Isles, they anticipate exploring a variety of different destinations and immersing themselves in unique and beautiful cultures.

Guests now aboard Celebrity Infinity, however, are getting a much deeper look at Kusadasi, Turkey than they might have hoped for. In the meantime, they will be missing the remainder of their cruise visits and will not be sailing to Mykonos, Kavala, and Thessaloniki after all.

A letter delivered to guests’ stateroom on Wednesday, July 9, 2025 outlined the change as well as compensation being provided for the drastic changes to their itinerary.

“At this time, we have made the difficult decision to adjust the remainder of our scheduled itinerary,” the notification read.

“Celebrity Infinity will remain in the beautiful port of Kusadasi, Turkey, through Friday at 3:00 PM, with an all-aboard time of 2:00 PM. We will then set sail and return to Athens, Greece for debarkation as originally planned on Saturday.”

This new change in the ship’s itinerary follows a small electrical fire and subsequent power outage on Monday, July 7, 2025.

At the time, Celebrity Infinity was already docked in Kusadasi. The ship extended her time in port so the investigation and repairs could be completed. Now, however, it is clear that more work is necessary and the ship is unable to continue her “Best of Greece” itinerary.

All told, guests have only enjoyed on port of call in the archipelago nation – Santorini on Sunday, July 6 – prior to arriving in Kusadasi. Now, all the other Grecian ports of call are cancelled.

Compensation Offered

Guests are being offered significant compensation for the radical changes to their cruise.

First, all guests are receiving a refundable onboard credit equal to 50% of their cruise fare. This amount will vary depending on the fare guests paid, and any amount of this credit remaining at the end of the cruise will be refunded.

Furthermore, 50% of guests’ fare will also be issued as a future cruise credit valid toward any Celebrity Cruises sailing departing within the next year. This will give guests the opportunity to rebook a different sailing for their cruise vacation, on any ship in the Celebrity Cruises fleet.

Of course, any shore tours booked for Mykonos and Thessaloniki will be automatically cancelled and refunded to guests’ onboard accounts. Additional opportunities are also being offered for guests to explore further afield while the ship remains in Kusadasi.

“Though we are staying alongside a little longer, our staff and crew are very pleased to be able to offer complimentary curated tours for Thursday that will go beyond Kusadasi and Ephesus,” the notification letter confirmed.

The new tours can be booked on a first-come, first-served basis through the Celebrity Cruises app.

It is interesting that Celebrity Infinity will be remaining in Turkey for two more days, yet is seemingly able to make her way to Athens for debarkation.

In similar circumstances, different cruise lines might have opted to cancel the remainder of the cruise and helped guests make arrangements to return home from Kusadasi.

Obviously, the 91,000-gross ton Celebrity Infinity remains safe and seaworthy if she will be able to proceed to Athens for debarkation, though guests onboard are understandably concerned that the ship may not return to Athens as planned.

The reported problems following Monday’s small fire are mainly for guests’ comfort, such as air conditioning failures, kitchen delays, and lack of power in some staterooms.

At this time, there is no indication of any further changes for the second-oldest Celebrity Cruises ship, and hopefully, she will be fully repaired and have smooth sailing in the days ahead.

Carnival Mourns for Passengers Killed in Texas Flash Floods

Not long ago, three generations of the Harber family were enjoying a cruise vacation onboard Carnival Jubilee.

Today, two of the youngest family members are dead and two others are missing following the disastrous flash flooding in Central Texas over the 4th of July weekend.

Carnival Cruise Line has joined the world in mourning for the family’s tragic loss, and for all who were impacted by the natural disaster.

Blair Harber, who was 13 years old, and Brooke Harber, who was just 11 years old, died shortly after the deluge started in the early morning on July 4, 2025, in Hunt, Texas.

The sisters were staying with their grandparents, Charlene and Mike Harber, who are currently missing and presumed dead.

Both Brand Ambassador John Heald and popular Cruise Director Kyndall “Fire” Magyar remembered interacting with the Harber family as part of their recent sailing onboard Carnival Jubilee and publicly shared their sadness.

The family had joined the Excel-class vessel for a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise, which is an itinerary that the 2023-launched ship has been operating on repeat out of the Port of Galveston.

“I distinctly remember the two radiant smiles of these beautiful little girls, who the world now knows is Blair and Brooke Harber,” Magyar shared with a photo of the family in a tribute on social media.

“Not only did I have the opportunity to meet them, but their whole family. Their parents RJ and Annie, and their grandparents Mike and Charlene,” Magyar continued as she asked her followers to join her in sending their thoughts and prayers.

Heald also shared his own condolences on his Facebook Page and recalled sending the girls a small gift during their cruise to “make them smile.”

“Those beautiful girls, Blair and Brooke were lost to the floods in Texas. Their grandparents who had also been on the Carnival Jubilee with them were also lost,” Heald penned.

“On behalf of everyone at Carnival Cruise Line I send our condolences, love and prayers to the Harber family and to everyone affected by this tragedy,” he concluded.

The family made heroic efforts to get to their loved ones, with the girls’ father, RJ, even attempting to navigate the rough waters via a borrowed kayak.

But, unfortunately, the flooding and heavy rain came on too fast and were simply too intense.

The girls’ bodies were found less than a day after the flooding began in Kerrville, swept about 15 miles away from the home where they had been sleeping. They were still holding hands even in death.

Moving Past the Heartbreak

The Harber family are sadly just a small portion of the Texas community that is reeling from the intense flash flooding.

As of July 8, 2025, at least 110 people have been confirmed dead across six counties, with another 161 reported as missing.

First responders continue to search through the wreckage for possible survivors, but hope of finding living victims fades with every hour.

It will likely cost in the billions to repair the damaged homes, businesses, and infrastructure in the affected areas, and the heartbreak among those who lost loved ones may be irreversible.

That said, Carnival is trying to do its part to make things just a little easier in the wake of the tragedy.

On a smaller scale, Magyar shared the Harber Family’s GoFundMe with her hundreds of thousands of followers to help them raise money for the sisters’ joint funeral and services for their grandparents when they are finally found.

Surely helped by the publicity, the fundraiser has raised $310,030 as of the time of writing, which far exceeds the $275,000 goal.

On a larger scale, the Carnival Foundation, which is the cruise line’s philanthropic arm, actively supports disaster relief efforts through monetary donations, in-kind contributions, and fundraising initiatives.

While Carnival hasn’t specifically spoken about efforts being made to assist Texas, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the cruise line stepping up to the plate.

Cruise Hive also sends our condolences to the Harber family and all who were affected by this horrible tragedy.

Itinerary Changed, Labadee Nixed from Liberty of the Seas Cruise

Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas will be embarking on a 9-night sailing to Bermuda and the Eastern Caribbean on August 21, 2025, but the itinerary will look a little different than expected.

The sailing, which is based out of Cape Liberty, New Jersey, originally featured calls on King’s Wharf (Royal Naval Dockyard), Bermuda; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Labadee, Haiti.

While most of those destinations are still on the itinerary (stay tuned for an update on Labadee), the times in port have shifted.

“To provide you with the best experience while onboard with us, we’ve had to make some adjustments to our arrival and departure times in Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda, Philipsburg, St. Maarten, and San Juan, Puerto Rico,” Royal Caribbean notified guests.

Following a sea day, the first call on the itinerary is on Bermuda’s Royal Naval Dockyard on August 23, 2025, and was originally scheduled to last from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time.

However, the Freedom-class vessel will now depart an hour early at 3 p.m.

On August 26, the planned visit to San Juan will be shortened by a half an hour. Instead of staying in the port from 7:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., the 4,960-guest ship will depart at 2:00 p.m.

Instead of leaving early, the Royal Caribbean cruise ship will arrive late in Philipsburg on August 25. The visit will shift from 11:59 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

“We’ll now depart Royal Naval Dockyard on Day 3 at 3:00 PM instead of 4:00 PM and we’ll now depart San Juan on Day 6 at 2:00 PM instead of 2:30 PM,” the cruise line’s update continued.

“We’ll now arrive to Philipsburg at 2:00 PM instead of 11:59 AM and depart at 8:00 PM instead of 7:00 PM.”

Royal Caribbean did not provide a reason for the changes aside from providing a good experience, but it’s not uncommon for itineraries to be tweaked to accommodate unexpected port congestion or updated port availability.

Labadee, Haiti, Gets Replaced

It’s not just the times that will be changing on Liberty of the Seas’ August 21, 2025, sailing. Indeed, the port of Labadee, Haiti, has been removed from the itinerary entirely.

The visit to Royal Caribbean’s private destination in Haiti, which was planned as the final stop of the cruise on August 27, 2025, will be replaced with a day in Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos.

“We’ll now skip our visit to Labadee, Haiti, on Day 7 and visit Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, giving you plenty of time to explore what this beautiful destination has to offer,” Royal Caribbean added.

The cruise line did not provide a reason for the swap, but Royal Caribbean fans likely won’t be surprised by the change.

Royal Caribbean has been diverting several of its ships away from the private resort for months out of an abundance of caution due to the political unrest in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital city.

Labadee itself is considered safe because it has its own private security and is nearly 100 miles away from the violence (which equates to a 6 or 7 hour drive with the terrain), but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

In addition to Liberty of the Seas, Icon of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, and Voyager of the Seas have also been recently re-routed to avoid the destination (just to name a few examples).

With Haiti still under the most severe Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory in the US, more changes will likely be coming for the fleet.

Changes to Norwegian Prima Sailing Due to Unexpected Port Congestion

On July 8, 2025, Norwegian Cruise Line notified booked guests more than seven months ahead of their cruise of some important itinerary changes.

The letter, noting all the changes, was sent to passengers booked on Norwegian Prima’s 7-night sailing departing from Port Canaveral on March 1, 2026.

“Every now and then, unexpected changes pop up, like port availability, that can shake up even the best-laid plans,” the letter explained.

“Sometimes we are informed that space is no longer available for that the vessel cannot be accommodated due to its size and the number of other ships scheduled to be in port that day,” it continues.

Norwegian Prima is Norwegian Cruise Line’s seventh-largest vessel, sitting at 143,535-gross-tons with a maximum passenger capacity of 3,950 — meaning that berthing issues could impact this vessel.

While the cruise line tried its best to ensure that the itinerary guests booked was the one that happened, updated port availability warranted multiple changes to this particular sailing.

The first change made was the departure time from Port Canaveral, which was originally set for 6 p.m. but will now be at 4 p.m. local time.

Then, the stop in Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas on day two, as well as the stop in Montego Bay in Jamaica on day four, were both cancelled.

Other stops that have not been cancelled include George Town in the Cayman Islands, as well as the stop in Cozumel in Mexico

However, parts of the itinerary have been shifted to accommodate the replacements made for the cancelled ports.

Originally, day two was scheduled for the stop in the Bahamas, but it will now be a day at sea.

Then, Cozumel was moved from day six to day three, with the port time shifting from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. to now being 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Next, the stop in George Town was moved from day five to day four, replacing the stop in Jamaica that was cancelled. The port time was also updated from being 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. to now being 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

One new port of call was added on day five, with the vessel now stopping in Falmouth, Jamaica, from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The last change to the itinerary was the swap from the visit in Cozumel on day 6 to now being an additional day at sea.

Some booked guests are not thrilled by these changes, as there are now two cancelled ports, with only one new stop being added in Jamaica.

The good news is that Norwegian Cruise Line allows passengers to cancel without penalty up until the final payment is due for their cruise, which falls 120 days prior to embarkation.

That means that any guest wishing to now cancel this cruise due to the itinerary changes can do so by November 1, 2025, if they want a full refund.

While the itinerary changes may not be ideal, the guests booked on this cruise might want to be grateful that it was not fully cancelled.

Norwegian Cruise Line Cancels 41 Sailings

Just this past week, Norwegian Cruise Line announced the sudden cancellation of 41 of its sailings between November 2026 and March 2027.

This included 21 voyages on Norwegian Breakaway, as well as 20 on none other than Norwegian Prima.

Both ships are set to be redeployed to new homeports, but the cruise line has yet to provide further information about where either vessel will end up.

For now, most sailings have been cancelled from late 2026 into early 2027, and booked guests will receive a full refund along with a 10 percent discount as a Future Cruise Credit (FCC).

While cancellations might be worse than itinerary changes, in both circumstances, Norwegian Cruise Line is at least trying to communicate as early as possible with booked guests to allow them the time to rebook if need be.

New Details Revealed About Celebration Key’s Food, Access, and More

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador John Heald is getting bombarded with questions from guests wanting to know more about Celebration Key, the cruise line’s highly anticipated private destination on Grand Bahama Island in the Bahamas.

As a result, Heald shared a detailed video update on July 8, 2025, revealing new details about Celebration Key, including transportation, food options, accessibility, and what’s included for guests.

Accessibility Revealed

Set to open July 19, 2025, Celebration Key will be a 10-minute walk from ships that call, with transportation options for guests who need assistance, he began.

“If you come off the ship and you’re going to Celebration Key, you need to give yourself 10 minutes’ walk, that’s all,” he said.

The carts will be equipped with side ramps for wheelchair access, and Carnival Cruise Line is encouraging guests with mobility scooters to ride down the flat pier, if able.

There will be four ADA-compliant golf carts available, as well, each holding up to three guests, plus 14 larger trams seating up to 12 people each, with Heald pointing out that isn’t a lot for a ship carrying 4,000 people.

“If you can walk, please walk it,” he urged.

Dining Options

Heald also discussed food options and addressed what is free and what isn’t. Every passenger will receive one complimentary meal at any of the destination’s 14 quick-service food outlets.

“All you do is go up to one of these locations, hand them your Sail & Sign card, and they will scan it,” he explained. “That’s it. You don’t need to add a gratuity or anything else.”

The complimentary menu includes items such as hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken tenders, hot dogs, mac and cheese, Caesar salads, and vegan or vegetarian options like falafel.

“Everything will come with fries and a large cookie,” he added. “No matter what you order, you get a cookie.”

For those wanting more upscale options, Celebration Key will also feature a number of sit-down restaurants at an additional cost.

One of the featured venues, Gill’s Grill, will offer seafood options like shrimp, snow crab, Caribbean lobster, and salmon, and is where Heald says he plans to go.

Coffee and donuts will also be available for purchase. “There is apparently the best doughnut shop in the world,” he said, noting he was told that by Carnival Cruise Line’s senior vice president of hotel operations.

Heald also revealed a “swingers’ bar,” where guests can relax and swing while enjoying drinks from the bar.

Guests can use either their Sail Sign card or a personal credit card to purchase additional items, with the entire destination cashless.

What’s Free and What’s Not

Heald clarified several times that guests will have access to a number of complimentary amenities including shaded seating areas, beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels – “enough for everybody.”

Although he said with a grin, “please return the towels” and that guests are welcome to bring their own pool noodles and floats.

Freshwater and access to the massive lagoon, described by Heald as “epically massive” and “majestic,” are also included.

Excursions can be pre-purchased through Carnival’s website, but guests are also free to explore the open areas of Celebration Key without paying extra. “There are so many areas that you can go to for everybody,” he said.

Guests can also come and go between the ship and Celebration Key as often as they’d like. “But I think once you get there, you won’t want to leave,” Heald added.

He ended the video by promising additional updates and behind-the-scenes views once he’s onsite starting July 19, 2025, including footage of the lagoon, the ADA carts, and the sit-down restaurants.

Celebrity Xcel Cruise Ship to Feature Four New Spaces

With just four months to go before Celebrity Xcel enters service, the fifth Edge-class ship from Celebrity Cruises revealed more details about spaces and experiences guests can look forward to, such as pool parties and retro games.

The 3,260-guest new-build is under construction at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in France and will sail her first voyage, a 4-night preview cruise from Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades, on November 9, 2025.

The preview voyage was added in April 2025, when the line announced that construction was ahead of schedule and the vessel would debut earlier than originally planned.

The new onboard experiences detailed by the line on July 8, 2025 reflect an eclectic mix of activities, from playing darts, shuffleboard, and Pac-Man in a new lounge, to innovative relaxation areas in the ship’s spa, and a luxury-level pool club featuring chilled towels and a VIP option.

Also, the cruise line’s first Celebrity Flagship retail store will be the place where guests can find branded souvenirs of their vacation at sea.

Celebrity Xcel Spa

“Celebrity Xcel will set sail with seven new elevated experiences that invite guests to escape their daily routine and make memories that will last a lifetime, said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises

“With so much innovation at every turn, the journey will be just as fun as the destinations themselves,” added Hodges Bethge.

The cruise line earlier this year disclosed other newly envisioned spaces the ship will offer, including The Bazaar, a three-story area focused on local cultures that the ship’s itineraries will feature, and an open-kitchen restaurant called Mosaic.

New Relaxation Spaces, Poolside Galas Set to Debut

Let’s take a look at the new relaxation space guests can enjoy in The Spa aboard Celebrity Xcel.

The Hydra Room will be among several therapeutic areas in the facility, featuring a hot tub, heated lounge chairs, and a quiet, soothing atmosphere.

An outdoor deck, Vitamin D, will be accessible only to Thermal Suite guests and offer ocean views beyond the ship’s bow and a choice of complimentary non-alcoholic beverages.

A fundamental element of most cruises is the poolside ambience, and Celebrity Xcel is on track to deliver big time with its new Celebrity Pool Club. Comfy sun-beds and a pool valet who delivers chilled towels will lend a luxurious aspect to the club.

A VIP package will add a private cabana and dedicated wait staff service. (Prices have not been revealed.) The pool area will come alive on the final at-sea day of each voyage, with Caribbean-inspired music and drinks, plus pop-up shows and various pool games.

The event is called the Poolest Day Ever, and wraps up with a Shine the Night poolside party that will likely go into the wee hours.

Guests can step back in time at the new space called Attic at The Club, a lounge geared to adults who enjoy games such as Pac-Man — the video game from the 1980s, plus pool, foosball, shuffleboard, and darts.

The ship’s Celebrity Flagship store is being designed as a retail space but it also will have interactive screens that ask trivia questions. Souvenirs for sale will include clothing, water bottles, keychains, and lots of items that can be engraved.

Following Celebrity Xcel’s preview cruise, she will sail her maiden voyage on November 18, 2025, a 5-night cruise roundtrip from Port Everglades to Bimini, Bahamas, and Cozumel, Mexico.

The 140,600-gross-ton ship will offer 7-night Caribbean and Bahamas voyages until May 2026, when she repositions to Europe for a series of Western Mediterranean summer cruises roundtrip from Barcelona and between Barcelona and Athens.

The ship will return to North America in October 2026, when she will homeport in Miami and sail a winter series of Caribbean cruises.

Power Outage Hits Celebrity Cruises Ship, Extends Port Visit

Celebrity Infinity’s current 7-night voyage to Greece has met a major hiccup.

While docked in Kusadasi, Turkey, on July 7, 2025, the 2,170-guest ship allegedly experienced a small electrical fire that led to a power outage.

It’s unclear exactly when and where the fire occurred, but these situations are most common in engine rooms around electrical panels, switchboards, and cabling.

According to current passengers, the blackout lasted for several hours with no power for announcements from the crew and no air conditioning.

“While most guests (including myself) were ashore there was a small electrical fire onboard Celebrity Cruise’s Infinity while docked in Kusadasi, Turkey. It was a total blackout for a few hours,” a current guest shared in the early morning hours of July 8 from the port.

With the cruise port hitting a high of 91 degrees Fahrenheit on July 7, the lack of air conditioning was the biggest complaint in cruise forums.

But for the most part, guests have been expressing their appreciation for the crew during this difficult situation and making the most of spending a bit more time exploring the Turkish city.

“I have to shout out the crew on this ship as they fielded concerns for all aboard. No power meant no communications, power to rooms, AC, Delayed Shows, Delayed Meals (kitchens literally went into a near total standstill), and obviously disappointed guests,” the cruiser added.

“It was a very hot day in Turkey today as well, so that added to the pressure.”

It’s unclear if all power has been restored as of the time of publication, but the fire was quickly put out and crew members are hard at work on making the necessary repairs.

Cruise tracking data shows that the 90,940-gross ton ship has extended her visit in Kusadasi, as she is still docked when she was meant to depart at 9:00 p.m. on July 7.

Per current guests, she will remain in the port until the late afternoon of Wednesday, July 9, to ensure all systems are functioning properly before heading back out to sea.

Cruise Hive reached out for a statement and received the following from a Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson: “Our team is addressing a technical issue. We have communicated with our guests directly.”

For context, Royal Caribbean Group is also the parent company for Celebrity Cruises.

What Happens Next?

With Celebrity Infinity spending over an extra day in port, it goes without saying that the 7-night itinerary has been changed.

The planned calls on Mykonos, Greece, on July 8 and on Kavala, Greece, on July 9 will no longer be possible.

That said, a current guest reported that the crew was trying to replace the sea day on July 11 with a day in Mykonos.

“We’ll miss our scheduled port of Mykonos, Greece tomorrow, but they will remove our one sea day and replace it with that towards the end of the 7 day cruise,” the guest confirmed.

The final port call on Thessaloniki, Greece, on July 10 is so far unaffected, and the cruise ship is expected to disembark as planned in Athens, Greece, on July 12.

Of course, this plan rides on how smoothly the repairs go. If the damage is more extensive than initially expected or there are additional delays, the itinerary could change again.

Guests embarking on the subsequent 7-night Greek sailing on July 12 will also likely want to keep an eye out for any updates from Celebrity Cruises, just in case.

More likely than not, the repairs will go to plan and the Millennium-class cruise ship will soon be fully operational and back in action.

Power outages (and small electrical fires) like this aren’t super common, and thanks to the skill and training of the crew members, can be resolved quickly.

At the end of last week, Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas just suffered an overnight power outage due to minor electrical issues.

However, technicians were able to restore most of the power before the night was through and the only lasting impact was a slightly delayed embarkation for the next sailing.

Sitka Cancelled for Delayed Royal Caribbean Ship, Other Ports Adjusted

More than 24 hours after she was supposed to depart Vancouver to begin a 7-night Alaska Inside Passage sailing, satellite tracking data confirms that Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas finally began moving at about 6:30 p.m. local time.

The ship had initially departed Vancouver’s Canada Place cruise terminal Sunday afternoon, but turned around and returned to the dock after just a couple of hours.

An undisclosed technical issue caused the ship’s delay, and engineering teams worked on the issue throughout the day on Monday, July 7.

Guests were required to remain onboard the vessel and were not permitted to explore Vancouver while they waited for updates on their sailing.

Unfortunately, updates were not easily forthcoming. Finally, the Royal Caribbean app was updated with a refreshed itinerary, confirming that the first planned port of call, Sitka, Alaska, was cancelled.

The remaining ports of call on the cruise were still planned, though the times in port for each one were slightly adjusted. Serenade of the Seas will now explore the Last Frontier as follows:

  • Tuesday, July 8 – Day at sea (previously Sitka)
  • Wednesday, July 9 – Scenic cruising through Tracy Arm Fjords; Juneau, Alaska from 2:30-9 p.m. (previously 2-7:30 p.m.)
  • Thursday, July 10 – Ketchikan from 3-9:30 p.m. (previously 2:30-10 p.m.)
  • Friday, July 11 – Prince Rupert, British Columbia from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (previously 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Saturday, July 12 – Day at sea
  • Sunday, July 13 – Arrival back to Vancouver

While the time changes are not strongly significant at any one port destination, some shore tours will undoubtedly need to be adjusted slightly to accommodate the ship’s new schedule. If tours were booked through Royal Caribbean, these adjustments will be made automatically.

If tours are unable to be adjusted, guests will be notified individually of any cancellations, and refunds will be provided.

At this time, guests have not yet been informed of any onboard credit or pro-rated refund for missing Sitka. It is possible this may yet be forthcoming, but it would need to be approved and authorized from the cruise line’s headquarters.

On the previous sailing, her June 29 departure, Serenade of the Seas developed similar technical problems that required reduced speed and the ship skipped Icy Strait Point. For that disappointment, guests were provided an onboard credit equal to one day of their cruise fare.

It is entirely likely, though not confirmed, that similar compensation may be offered to guests currently onboard and finally setting sail on their Alaskan cruise vacation.

Has the Problem Truly Been Fixed?

Guests – both those onboard as well as passengers booked on upcoming sailings – are understandably nervous about whether or not the technical issue has been fully corrected.

Of course, if it has, Serenade of the Seas should have smooth sailing and guests are in for amazing experiences as they visit different ports.

If the problem recurs, however, it is possible that additional adjustments may be necessary and more ports could be removed from the itinerary if the ship’s speed must be reduced.

This could then have a knock on effect to additional sailings, possibly even leading to full cruise cancellations. This happened with Radiance of the Seas during her Alaska season in 2024.

Serenade of the Seas and Radiance of the Seas are sister ships – could they be having similar technical difficulties? Time will tell, but Cruise Hive wishes the ship and everyone aboard smooth and safe cruising.
