What Does an Upside-Down Pineapple Mean on a Cruise Ship?

Key Aspects:

  • Upside-down pineapples on cruises are displayed and worn by swingers to discreetly signal their lifestyle to others.
  • Some cruise lines no longer allow passengers to display non-family-friendly symbols such as pineapples on their cabin doors.
  • A lot of on-ship décor and symbols worn by cruisers have no specific meaning and are just tropical and for fun.

If you spot an upside-down pineapple on a cruise, there’s a good chance it’s a quiet little wink between couples who swing. Of course, for some, it’s nothing more than simple décor or a playful accessory.

But knowing what it can mean could save you from some awkward encounters while traveling. And trust me, nobody wants that kind of surprise on vacation.

The Hidden Meaning Behind Upside-Down Pineapples on Cruise Ships

Have you ever seen an upside-down pineapple sign on someone’s cabin door during a cruise?

If so, you might’ve seen someone (or two someones!) indicating that they are open to swinging with other couples. But there’s also a chance you saw nothing more than a tropical decoration meant to be a friendly greeting to other passengers.

So how do you tell the difference? Honestly, you usually can’t. There’s a chance you’ll never know for sure unless you participate in an alternative lifestyle and/or you’re willing to ask the passenger in question.

The point is to discreetly signal to others who participate in consensual non-monogamy (CNM), so unless you’re interested in pursuing that experience, it’s better not to comment.

Where Did the Upside-Down Pineapple Symbol Come From?

Traditionally, pineapples are a welcome sign. They’re a sign of friendliness and hospitality. This is often still the case when a pineapple is right-side-up.

However, if the pineapple is upside down, chances are you’re seeing a secret code being communicated to those in the swinging community.

The upside-down pineapple popped up online in the early internet days and was found on message boards and forums used by swingers. It was around the 2010s when people outside of the community learned about its meaning via social media.

And now that the symbol is widely recognized, some cruise lines have banned passengers from displaying upside-down pineapples on their cabin doors.

Where You Might See Upside-Down Pineapples on a Cruise

The most common display of the upside-down pineapple on a cruise is on the cabin door. However, you might also see them on clothing or jewelry. Some people even go so far as to get a pineapple tattoo.

In addition to understanding the secret code when you’re on a cruise, it’s also a good idea to be careful not to accidentally communicate an invitation by wearing anything pineapple-themed, especially if the print is upside down.

Do People Actually Use the Pineapple Symbol on Cruises?

Yes, people really do use it.

However, if you’re going on a cruise and you expect to see upside-down pineapples all over the ship, you’ll likely be disappointed.

The use of the pineapple is usually discreet and often only appears on adults-only cruises or cruises specifically designed for swingers, depending on the cruise line.

If you’re taking your family on a cruise and would prefer not to have to explain the symbol to your children (or your grandma!), don’t worry. You’re probably not going to see a single upside-down pineapple, so don’t stress.

Cruisers who are still uncomfortable with the idea can opt for more family-friendly cruises where people are discouraged or “banned” from communicating with the pineapple symbol, and crew members will remove them from your door if you display them.

Other Cruise Symbols with Hidden Meanings

Pineapples aren’t the only little hints or subtle invites you can expect to see associated with the CNM lifestyle on a cruise. Other ways a couple might signal to others that they are interested in swinging include displaying or wearing clothing items with flamingoes, wearing a black ring and/or wedding ring on the right hand, and displaying pampas grass.

Anklets and toe rings can also be a message to other passengers that you’re open to being approached, but it isn’t necessarily tied to swinging.

There are also several non-sexual items or symbols you might see on cruises that are usually fun, family-friendly games. This includes hidden rubber ducks, gnomes, and door décor like magnets, birthday signs, passenger names, and more.

In most cases, symbols and door décor are all in good fun. Unfortunately, even when things are family-friendly, they can cause a stir. Some passengers have expressed frustration over stolen door décor.

Your best bet, if you’re interested in expressing yourself with symbols and door décor while cruising, is to understand the various symbols and not use anything of value if you plan to leave the items unsupervised.

Should You Avoid Wearing Pineapples on a Cruise?

Remember, none of these things automatically means someone is interested in swinging.

In some cases, the person likes the print. It’s easy to understand why tropical-themed items like flamingoes and pineapples would be popular for cruise passengers, especially those sailing to destinations like Hawaii.

The most important thing to remember when it comes to this topic: context matters. People use cabin door decorations and symbols for a variety of reasons.

If you’re new to swinging or curious about it, seeing a symbol like a pineapple can be a way to broach the subject, as long as you’re discreet and respectful.

If you’re not into it, no worries. And if you see one, just walk on by. And if you’re new to cruising and want to know what you’re getting into before embarking, we have plenty of resources to help you learn the ropes before you set sail.

Miami Couple Charged in $200K Cruise and Jewelry Fraud Scheme

Key Aspects:

  • A Miami couple was arrested after collecting more than $200,000 for cruise vacations and luxury watches that were never delivered.
  • Victims paid over $44,000 for fake reservations on a July 2023 sailing aboard Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas.
  • The suspects face multiple felony charges and up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

A discounted cruise vacation sounded like a good deal to several South Florida residents. But it turns out the deal was too good to be true.

Investigators say it was instead the center of a fraud scheme that lasted nearly three years and cost victims more than $200,000.

Authorities in Miami-Dade County arrested Maria Blasco Diaz and her husband, Antonio Diaz, this week after detectives said the pair collected money for cruise packages and luxury goods that were never delivered.

According to an arrest report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began after victims reported paying thousands of dollars for cruise packages arranged through Maria Blasco Diaz.

One of the trips was scheduled for July 2023 aboard Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas, a 4,198-passenger Quantum-Ultra-class cruise ship that sails Caribbean itineraries from Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades.

Detectives said the victims paid more than $44,000 for cruise-related expenses for the planned sailing. But as the departure date approached, the trip never materialized.

According to investigators, Maria Blasco Diaz blamed the failed booking on a cruise line employee who had allegedly been fired.

“She told them the cruise reservations were cancelled because the employee who handled the booking was fired,” the arrest report states.

In one case described by local media, nearly 20 family members had their bags packed for a graduation cruise when the trip was cancelled just two days before departure after the reservation turned out to be fraudulent. The cruise offer was only part of what detectives say was a broader fraud scheme.

Authorities say the couple also collected large deposits from friends and acquaintances who believed they were purchasing luxury watches and jewelry at discounted rates.

Investigators said Maria Blasco Diaz offered what she described as a “friends and family” discount of about 50 percent on Rolex watches through her husband, who worked at a jewelry store.

In total, authorities say the couple collected $200,259.85 from victims, which the couple attempted to repay with checks drawn from bank accounts with insufficient funds.

Facing Serious Charges

The charges filed against the Miami-Dade couple carry some of the most serious penalties under Florida law.

According to the arrest report, Maria Blasco Diaz and Antonio Diaz face multiple felony charges, including organized fraud exceeding $50,000, grand theft of more than $100,000, issuing worthless checks, and theft involving an elderly victim.

If convicted, the penalties could include decades behind bars. Under Florida law, organized fraud and grand theft are first-degree felonies, punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

Cruise scams involving fake bookings are rare but not unheard of, particularly when trips are sold through unofficial channels.

In one recent case reported by Cruise Hive, a New York travel agent was accused of collecting thousands of dollars from clients for cruise vacations that investigators said did not exist.

Those fake cruise bookings were also for Royal Caribbean sailings, this time from Bayonne, New Jersey.

Cruise guests should be cautious when asked to pay large deposits through personal payment apps, wire transfers, or checks made out to individuals rather than established travel agencies.

Most cruise lines and accredited travel advisors process payments through secure booking systems that provide receipts and confirmations.

Passengers can stay safe by using a credit card, which typically offers protections and the ability to dispute charges if a booking turns out to be fraudulent.

Passengers can reduce the risk of fraud by confirming cruise reservations directly with the cruise line once a booking is made, as legitimate reservations generate a confirmation number that can be verified online or through the cruise line’s customer service department.

Authorities in Florida say anyone who believes they may have been affected by the Miami-Dade scheme should contact investigators.

Port Availability Forces Norwegian Dawn to Swap Homeport

Key Aspects:

  • Norwegian Dawn will be embarking from Tarragona, Spain, instead of Barcelona on August 2.
  • Guests have been notified of the embarkation port change, which is due to port availability updates.
  • Barcelona has demolished three terminals for the construction of a new terminal to be completed by 2030.

Traveling to a cruise homeport for embarkation is both exciting and stressful for many travelers. For guests setting sail on Norwegian Dawn on August 2, 2026, the situation has just become less about excitement and more about stress as Norwegian Cruise Line has unexpectedly changed the embarkation port for that sailing.

Guests have been notified about the adjustment, which includes a departure time change for the ship. Now, Norwegian Dawn will be embarking in Tarragona, Spain instead of Barcelona.

“While we coordinate closely with port authorities to confirm every detail well in advance, operational conditions can change, and at times we’re informed that space is no longer available,” the email notification explained.

“Due to recent port availability updates, our embarkation port has changed from Barcelona, Spain to Tarragona, Spain.”

The two cities are roughly 70 miles apart, depending on the exact route taken between them. Driving between the two ports takes roughly 90 minutes in typical traffic.

Norwegian Dawn‘s August 2 sailing is a 7-night one-way cruise to Lisbon, with stops in Palma de Majorca, Valencia, Motril, Gibraltar, Cadiz, and Portimao along the way. The ship will arrive in Lisbon on Sunday, August 9.

While the change to the embarkation port may be startling, there are no further changes to the ports of call or the ship’s arrival to Lisbon at this time.

Fortunately for travelers, Norwegian Dawn will also be departing Tarragona three hours later than the departure that was planned from Barcelona. Originally, the ship was to have set sail at 4 p.m., but now she will not leave until 7 p.m.

This extra time can help travelers who might now have to rearrange travel plans ensure they still arrive at the homeport in time for their sailing. This may be especially necessary for travelers flying into Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), which is just west of the Port of Barcelona and only a 20-minute drive.

With the homeport change, guests flying to Barcelona-El Prat Airport will now need to make their way to Tarragona, which can take more than an hour.

Since the cruise does not depart for nearly four months, there is plenty of time to investigate available options through trains or other public transportation, ride share services, private drivers, or other choices.

If guests have booked pre-cruise plans through Norwegian Cruise Line, those arrangements will be automatically adjusted to reflect the embarkation port change to Tarragona rather than Barcelona.

Why Is the Homeport Changed?

Cruise Hive has previously reported on these types of rare homeport changes. The circumstances for each shift vary, but can be due to flooding or other problems at a homeport, port construction, or local changes in policies that may prohibit multiple ships or ships of certain sizes from docking.

Norwegian Cruise Line has not offered further details for the switch to Norwegian Dawn. The Port of Barcelona is currently at a lower capacity than typical, however, as three cruise terminals have been demolished to accommodate construction on a new facility, which will open in 2030.

On August 2, 2026, there are five other ships planned for Barcelona in addition to Norwegian Dawn. Also in port will be Legend of the Seas, Scarlet Lady, Oosterdam, MSC Splendida, and Costa Toscana.

While the construction is ongoing, the Port of Barcelona can only dock five vessels. Norwegian Dawn is one of the smaller vessels that day, with a capacity of just 2,340 guests. Oosterdam is only slightly smaller with a capacity of 1,964 guests, while all the other vessels are larger.

Barcelona is the busiest cruise port in the Mediterranean and is popular not only as an embarkation and debarkation point, but also as a port of call on various itineraries depending on how individual cruise lines schedule their sailings.

Carnival Cruise Line Testing New Lunchtime Menu on Select Ships

Key Aspects:

  • Carnival Cruise Line is testing a new Chicken, Waffles, & Waves lunch venue on select ships.
  • The new menu has been reported on most Conquest Class vessels on Deck 10.
  • Guest reactions are mixed to the offerings, but the new menu may yet be further refined.

Guests looking for some southern comfort food will enjoy a tasty new lunch option Carnival Cruise Line is testing on select ships. Chicken, Waffles, & Waves is now available aboard Carnival Freedom, Carnival Liberty, Carnival Glory, Carnival Valor, and possibly other vessels.

Brand ambassador John Heald confirmed the new menu is being tested, and guest comments note that it has appeared on different ships over the past month.

“We are testing some new food options, some very, very exciting new food options on different ships,” Heald confirmed.

The Chicken, Waffles, & Waves menu is similar to a cross between Guy’s Pig & Anchor and Shaq’s Big Chicken, though the new venue is not specifically branded to either one.

As the name indicates, chicken and waffles are on the menu, albeit separately, so guests can combine the waffles with whatever type of chicken they prefer.

Fried chicken is available with both classic seasoning and spicy flavor, as well as a hot honey glazed variety. Saucy chicken tenders come in either buffalo or saucy Korean varieties. Guests can also have crispy plain chicken tenders, and crispy chicken burger is served with a soft bun topped with pickles, mayo, and lettuce (or just ask for plain!).

On the barbecue side of the menu, there is a choice of slow cooked pork butt or beef brisket, both of which are gluten free. Sauces are available for guests to top their meats however much they wish.

Three different side items are also available: a classic creamy coleslaw, creamy mac and cheese, or a potato salad with crispy bacon.

Where the new venue is already in place, it is located on Deck 10 aft, above the Lido Marketplace buffet space. Guests can reach the venue either from the outer deck entrances or from the stairs across from the buffet.

Previously, the space was the “‘Ol Fashioned BBQ” venue, though that option did not offer the chicken choices on the menu.

Chicken Waffles and Waves Menu
Chicken Waffles and Waves Menu

As a bonus for Carnival guests in the know about the new space, lines are generally either non-existent or very short, making the venue a great choice to grab a quick, satisfying bite. Seating is also plentiful in the area, even during the lunch rush, though one side of the seating area may be closed off for Camp Carnival diners.

There is no charge for the new venue, though its hours are limited, similar to the lunch buffet hours.

Heald has not indicated when or if Chicken, Waffles, & Waves may be expanded fleetwide or even if it will be featured on all ships. For example, it may be restricted to the Conquest Class of ships that have the convenient barbecue space, and it is unlikely to be added to the Excel Class, where Shaq’s Big Chicken is already a favorite.

Cruise Hive has previously reported on other new menu options Carnival Cruise Line is testing, including the Bagels at Sea now offered fleetwide for breakfast.

Guest Reactions to the New Menu

The Chicken, Waffles, & Waves menu does not change from day-to-day. Therefore, guests have a reliable selection of popular items each day, which can be especially helpful for parents whose children may be in a “chicken tenders” phase (heck, I’m in that phase some days). But what do guests really think of the choices?

Reactions are somewhat mixed from those who have already tried the new menu. Many guests enjoy the variety, but do wish there were a few more options.

“[It would] be nice if there was a grilled chicken option not just all fried,” one guest commented, and several agreed.

A choice of a honey glaze without the heat and additional sides such as baked beans, fries, and collard greens are other popular suggestions. There has also been feedback that the cooking style on the waffles needs to be adjusted for a bit more crispiness.

While Heald has not indicated if the menu will be adjusted in the weeks to come, it isn’t uncommon for cruise ships to test menu selections and make changes after considering popularity and guest feedback.

Cruise Passenger Brings Assault Claim Against Carnival Cruise Line

Key Aspects:

  • A brother and sister were followed, harassed, and assaulted by other passengers onboard Carnival Jubilee.
  • The siblings feel that Carnival’s security team did not do enough to protect them from the known threat, and are suing for negligence.
  • Carnival has a zero-tolerance policy for violence, with violent acts punishable by confinement, fines, early debarkation, and lifetime bans.

Two siblings are pursuing legal action against Carnival Cruise Line after their vacation onboard Carnival Jubilee was ruined by a group of aggressive passengers.

They feel that Carnival’s security team did not do enough to protect them from their attackers and are accusing the cruise line of negligence in a lawsuit that was filed on March 31, 2026.

Aiden Chambers, a 19-year-old, and his 12-year-old sister were guests onboard the 183,521-gross ton ship in June of 2025, during which time they were allegedly harassed by a group of unidentified young adults.

The duo claim they were followed and verbally harassed by the other passengers for a significant time period before the situation escalated into a physical attack that left the older brother with a brain injury.

But even though the attack came from unruly guests, the siblings are holding the cruise line responsible for the pain and suffering that they have allegedly endured.

Did Carnival’s Security Team Do Enough?

The siblings’ ordeal first began on Deck 9 of the 5,362-guest ship while the vessel was in transit on June 20, 2025. The siblings say they did not provoke the other guests, and believe they were targeted, possibly because Aiden is autistic.

Fearing for their safety, the Texas residents immediately reported the harassment to Carnival’s onboard security team. However, the lawsuit states that the crew members did not take any action to disperse the aggressors or protect the victims.

Of course, there are two sides to every story. While security personnel are able to place potentially dangerous guests under cabin confinement or in the brig (onboard jail), they must also verify the facts.

This means going through a process that includes taking statements, interviewing involved parties and witnesses, and/or reviewing security footage.

It’s not clear at this time how far security personnel had gotten in this process when the harassment escalated into a physical assault a short time after the report was made.

According to the lawsuit, the siblings were cornered while on their way to their cruise cabin, during which time Aiden shielded his sister and was severely beaten. His minor sister was also assaulted before she was able to escape into their stateroom.

The lawsuit claims that security personnel did not arrive on the scene in a timely manner. It further alleges that crew members later admitted they had not properly monitored the known threat.

These are allegations stated in the lawsuit, and Carnival has not yet filed a response in court. Carnival Jubilee is also operating normally at this time and is currently offering Western Caribbean sailings from Galveston, Texas.

Carnival Does Not Tolerate Violence

One of the main arguments in the lawsuit is that Carnival was aware of the risk of onboard violence based on past events, but failed to provide a sufficient security presence and to monitor the alcohol intake of its guests to keep everyone safe.

It’s not the first time violence has broken out among passengers of the Excel-class ship either, with Cruise Hive reporting on a fight that broke out in the Galveston cruise terminal after disembarking from the vessel in April 2025.

But while the cruise line has not publicly commented on this specific situation, the brand has made it clear that it has a zero-tolerance policy for violence.

According to Carnival’s Code of Conduct, guests who pose a danger to themselves or others risk consequences like detainment, early disembarkation, and fines of up to $500.

“Any violation may result in a fine of $500, possible stateroom confinement and removal from the ship. Guests may also be liable for reimbursement of expenses incurred by Carnival as a result of the detainment or disembarkation,” the policy states.

In past fighting incidents, Carnival has banned the perpetrators for life without any hesitation. For example, the 24 people involved in the aforementioned fight in Galveston were immediately placed on the Do Not Sail list.

Carnival also banned passengers after a late-night brawl onboard Carnival Paradise in 2024 and after a chair-throwing incident onboard Carnival Sunrise in 2025.

The cruise line would have conducted its own investigation into the incident with the Chambers siblings, but the results of this inquiry are not publicly known. Assuming the claim is accurate, the aggressors likely also received a lifetime ban.

Royal Caribbean Adjusts Dozens of Alaska Cruises to Avoid Landslide Risk

Key Aspects:

  • Royal Caribbean has now cancelled scenic cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord for 2026.
  • Carnival, Holland America Line, and Virgin Voyages have all made similar itinerary adjustments.
  • The cancellations are due to a massive landslide in the Alaskan fjord in August 2025.

Just as the Alaska sailing season gets underway, a fourth cruise line has now abruptly changed dozens of sailings to remove Tracy Arm Fjord due to “a recent landslide and ongoing navigation safety concerns.” Royal Caribbean has joined the growing list of cruise lines that won’t be visiting Tracy Arm Fjord in 2026.

Instead, impacted itineraries will sail through Endicott Arm to view the magnificent Dawes Glacier. The two passages are just 20 miles apart in southeast Alaska, but that provides enough distance for cruise ships to be safer in the dramatic landscape.

Itineraries for Serenade of the Seas as well as Voyager of the Seas are being adjusted. While the other ports on each individual sailing are not changed, some adjustments are necessary to accommodate the shift in scenic cruising. Booked passengers have started sharing their letters online.

Serenade of the Seas will reposition to Vancouver in early May, and her first impacted Alaska itinerary is the May 24 departure. Not all of the ship’s seasonal voyages include Tracy Arm Fjord, but 16 itineraries do have the fjord on the schedule.

Voyager of the Seas will begin sailing from Seattle on May 8 after she arrives from Brisbane, but her first impacted itinerary is the May 15 departure. A total of 15 of her sailings have been scheduled to include Tracy Arm Fjord and all may be affected.

Pre-paid shore excursions booked through Royal Caribbean will be automatically adjusted for new port arrival and departure times if possible. If any tours cannot be shifted adequately, they will be cancelled and fully refunded to the original form of payment.

Guests who may have made independent tour arrangements will want to reconfirm plans and times with their tour operator to be sure their Alaskan adventures are still possible.

Cruise Hive has previously reported that Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line, and Virgin Voyages have already made similar adjustments for their Alaskan sailings through 2026.

At this time, ships from Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Cunard Line, Celebrity Cruises, MSC Cruises, Seabourn, Windstar Cruises, and several smaller lines are still scheduled for Tracy Arm Fjord visits this year, but additional cancellations may be forthcoming.

Why Not Sail in Tracy Arm Fjord?

The caution regarding sailings in Tracy Arm Fjord stems from a landslide on August 10, 2025. That landslide caused a localized tsunami and dislodged significant debris, estimated to be as much as 100 million cubic meters, into the fjord.

That debris can make ship navigation unsafe, and there remains the potential for additional landslides.

No cruise ships were inside Tracy Arm Fjord at the time of the August 10 landslide, which occurred at roughly 5:30 a.m. Tsunami waves stretched more than 35 miles past the landslide. According to the Alaska Earthquake Center, the event was the largest landslide recorded in the region in the past decade.

With so many other amazing scenic vistas in different fjords in Alaska, it does not make sense to continue sailing in Tracy Arm Fjord when more stable alternatives are available. To be clear, the destination has always been just a scenic cruising day and guests do not actually disembark their ships.

Guests on the dozens of sailings from different cruise lines that will now be visiting Endicott Arm instead will still enjoy the phenomenal views and iconic wildlife renowned in Alaska.

Endicott Arm is slightly further south than Tracy Arm Fjord, and both scenic cruising spots are popular on different Alaskan itineraries.

Princess Cruises Adjusting Some Juneau Visits to Tender Operations

Key Aspects:

  • Grand Princess will be tendering instead of docking in Juneau, Alaska on May 27.
  • The ship’s time in port is unchanged and will still be from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Other itineraries may also be impacted and guests should stay in contact with the cruise line for notifications.

With the Alaska cruise season just getting underway, Princess Cruises is advising guests on select itineraries that they will be unable to dock at the pier when visiting Juneau. Instead, certain ships will be using water shuttles to ferry guests ashore, which can cause some delays and limitations.

For example, guests onboard Grand Princess for the ship’s May 23, 2026 departure from Whittier have received notice that they will be using tenders.

“Due to operational considerations, Grand Princess will now be at anchor in Juneau, Alaska on Wednesday, May 27, rather than alongside,” the email notification explained. “A ship-to-shore water shuttle service will be available to enable you to go ashore.”

To use a water shuttle, guests must be able to board the small boat without crew assistance. This might include a few stairs or crossing a moving ramp, depending on which small boats are used and the conditions at the time.

Mobility scooters may not be able to be accommodated on every water shuttle, and large strollers can also be difficult to manage.

The time Grand Princess is visiting Juneau on this sailing is not changed and the ship will be at anchor from 6:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Guests should note, however, that it will take longer to debark and reboard the ship using water shuttles.

Typically, guests who book shore excursions through the cruise line will be the first ferried off the ship in the applicable port of call, and tour operators are made aware of any delays due to tendering.

On Wednesday, May 27, there are five ships scheduled to visit Juneau. In addition to Grand Princess, Ruby Princess and Star Princess will also be in port, as well as Holland America Line’s Westerdam and Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas.

Grand Princess Cruise Ship
Grand Princess Cruise Ship (Photo Credit: Macklin Holloway)

In total, the five ships will be bringing nearly 15,000 guests to visit Alaska’s capital that day. In comparison, Juneau’s regular population is roughly 32,000 residents.

There is one additional change to Grand Princess‘s itinerary on this particular sailing. The ship will arrive in Skagway 90 minutes earlier than planned, at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, rather than at 7 a.m. as originally scheduled. The 8:30 p.m. departure is not changed.

Why Is Grand Princess Tendering?

There is no explanation for why, of all five ships, Grand Princess will be the vessel tendering on May 27. She is not the smallest ship in Juneau that day, but she will be the first arriving with an anticipated arrival at 6-6:30 a.m.

The other ships are arriving from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be departing from 9-10 p.m. Grand Princess, on the other hand, is departing much earlier at 4 p.m.

Other factors that might determine which ship on a particular port’s schedule will be tendering can include what water shuttle facilities are available, what types of berths are available at which piers, and whether there is any pier construction or maintenance planned.

It is possible that other ships may also be tendering throughout the season, particularly on days when Juneau is particularly busy. On Sunday, May 31, for example, there will be eight cruise ships in port.

At times, it will undoubtedly be necessary for different ships to use water shuttles instead of docking in order for all guests to enjoy Juneau.

Each cruise line will undoubtedly notify impacted guests about tendering operations as soon as possible to let them prepare for their cruise vacation and expectations for visiting the city.

Sun Princess Turns Away After Fishermen Block Port Access

Key Aspects:

  • Sun Princess was forced to abandon its Corsican call after protests disrupted the ship’s arrival.
  • Fishermen blocked harbor access while protesting rising fuel prices.
  • All but one port on the island remains shut as of press time.

What should have been a routine day of arrivals and departures on the Mediterranean island of Corsica instead turned into a logistical headache for hundreds of passengers when protests halted ferry and cruise traffic.

Fishermen protesting rising fuel prices blocked access to several Corsican ports on April 7, 2026, preventing ferries and cruise ships from docking and leaving tourists stranded on the island or at sea.

Princess Cruise Line’s 4,300-passenger Sun Princess was one of the affected ships unable to arrive to Port Ajaccio due to the blockade.

A passenger on board said the Captain attempted to negotiate with the fisherman and was told they could enter but would not be allowed to leave, eventually forcing Sun Princess to abandon the port stop.

Instead, the ship continued its 7-night voyage from Barcelona and is making its way to its Genoa, Italy, call. It will also visit La Spezia for an overnight visit before concluding in Civitavecchia (Rome) on April 11.

Hopefully, the vessel will be allowed to stop in Corsica on its return voyage, scheduled for April 28.

The demonstrations are part of a growing movement by maritime workers who say soaring diesel costs from Middle East tensions are threatening their livelihoods.

Passengers hoping to leave Corsica or arrive by ferry and cruise ship faced cancellations and long delays as the blockade unfolded, beginning at 6 a.m. Some cruise and ferry routes were suspended while authorities assessed the situation.

The disruptions come at the start of the island’s busy travel period, when ferries regularly connect Corsica to mainland France and Italy and serve as a key gateway for tourists exploring the Mediterranean.

AIDA Cruises, a sister cruise line to Princess Cruises under the Carnival Corporation umbrella, also features Corsica’s Port Ajaccio on its current season, with AIDAcosma’s April 8 arrival in question.

Corsica Ports at Center of Protest

Corsica, the mountainous French island in the Mediterranean Sea between mainland France and Italy, is one of the region’s most-visited cruise and ferry destinations. Its ports, including Ajaccio, Bastia, and Porto-Vecchio, serve as a major gateway between the island and mainland Europe.

Ferries connect to Corsica to cities such as Marseille, Toulon, and Nice in France and to Italian ports, including Livorno and Genoa. Cruise ships frequently include the island on Western Mediterranean itineraries.

Cruise Boards: Best Cruises to Take out of Europe as a First Timer

Both Sun Princess and AIDAcosma have multiple calls to Ajaccio scheduled in April, along with Oceania Cruises’ Oceania Marina, Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Splendor, Marella Cruises’ Explorer 2, Azamara Club Cruises’ Azamara Quest, and Saga Cruises’s Spirit of Discovery.

It is unclear how long the fisherman plan to block the port or if local authorities will be able to regain control. The protests could broaden beyond the fishing industry, with the Corsican agricultural union saying farmers are facing similar pressure.

Fisherman and agricultural groups are warning they may expand demonstrations, potentially forcing further cruise itinerary changes and cancellations.

Driving up fuel costs is the volatility in global fuel markets tied to the recent tensions in the Middle East, which already forced cruise lines to abruptly end seasons early and reroute vessels from the region.

Cruise Guest Sues Celebrity Cruises After Tripping Over Misplaced Speaker

Key Aspects:

  • A former guest of Celebrity Reflection tripped on a speaker while dancing and is suing the cruise line.
  • She feels that the cruise line was negligent because crew members put the speaker in a dangerous location.
  • Celebrity Cruises adheres to strict safety standards, which includes guidance for preventing trip and fall hazards.

One former passenger of Celebrity Reflection felt a lot less like dancing after her sailing ended in an injury.

On January 14, 2025, a Florida resident named Jeannette Beres was enjoying the entertainment in the grand foyer (or atrium) on Deck 3 of the 125,366-gross ton vessel when she tripped over a speaker that was left on the dance floor.

The grand foyer is a popular spot for evening dancing, and the space frequently hosts performances from instrumentalists, jazz trios, and vocalists to set the mood. It’s also home to events like the popular ABBA dance party.

While attempting to get her groove on, Beres tripped and fell on a speaker that she claims was left in the center of the dance floor by Celebrity crew members, in the way of where guests were supposed to walk and dance.

The cruiser suffered a fractured foot in the incident, as well as additional injuries to her body and other extremities. She filed a lawsuit against Celebrity to seek compensation for pain, suffering, and related financial losses on March 26, 2026.

Celebrity Cruises Accused of Negligence

Beres’ is raising multiple counts of negligence against the cruise line, including negligent maintenance, negligent failure to inspect, and negligent failure to warn.

Her legal team argues that the cruise line failed to keep the dance floor in a reasonably safe condition and failed to conduct proper inspections that would have flagged what they feel is a hazardously placed speaker.

Additionally, Beres claims that the crew members did not provide signage, floor markings, or verbal warnings to make sure passengers were aware of the speaker.

Of course, there are always two sides to every story and Celebrity Cruises has not publicly commented on the lawsuit. If a public statement is made, Cruise Hive will issue an update.

While cruise companies can be liable for failing to maintain safe, dry, and unobstructed dance floors, it has to be proven that this was indeed the case. No security footage of the incident or pictures of the dance floor have been publicly released to help confirm the circumstances.

It’s also worth noting that Celebrity Cruises carefully follows safety standards outlined by Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), which includes guidelines for slip and trip hazard reductions.

There may also be an assumption risk to consider, where Beres voluntarily assumed the inherent risks of dancing on a moving cruise ship in a potentially crowded environment.

Despite the legal battles, guests are still happily dancing onboard Celebrity Reflection as the 3,046-guest ship operates 3- to 4-night sailings to the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Beres is not alone in wanting someone to take responsibility after a cruise ship fall. This is actually a fairly common lawsuit that the cruise lines are forced to address.

For example, Royal Caribbean, which is a sister-brand to Celebrity Cruises, was slapped with three lawsuits from guests who fell during their sailings at the end of March.

Earlier this year, Cruise Hive also reported on a slip and fall lawsuit that was filed against Princess Cruises. In this case, the passenger slipped on ribbons in one of the dining rooms onboard Ruby Princess.

Ultimately, only time will tell if the cruise lines will be found liable in these accidents or if the allegations of negligence will be thrown out for good.
