Key Aspects:
- Ovation of the Seas will be using Whittier instead of Seward for debarkation and embarkation on May 22, 2026.
- Port construction has made it impossible for the ship to use Seward as planned.
- No additional sailings have yet been impacted, but further changes will depend on the construction’s progress.
Guests setting sail aboard Ovation of the Seas in Vancouver on Friday, May 15, 2026 will enjoy their 7-night sailing but will not be ending the northbound Alaska itinerary in Seward as anticipated.
Royal Caribbean has notified guests of the change just one day before sailing, explaining that the cruise will now end in Whittier, Alaska instead.
“Due to port construction in Seward, Alaska, debarkation for your sailing will now take place in Whittier, Alaska,” the email posted by guests on Reddit confirmed.
“We’re terribly sorry for the last-minute change caused by the port construction. Our onboard team will share next steps during your cruise and will be available to assist to ensure your departure experience is as smooth as possible.”

Whittier is approximately 50 miles northeast of Seward and is another popular debarkation port for one-way, northbound Alaska cruises.
If guests have post-cruise tour or transfer arrangements booked through Royal Caribbean, the cruise line will make the appropriate timing adjustments automatically. Guests with private arrangements will need to contact their tour or transportation operators independently to make changes.
Next Cruise Embarkation Also Impacted
Guests on Ovation of the Seas‘ next sailing, departing on May 22, 2026, will likewise need to change their plans to meet the ship in Whittier rather than Seward for their southbound cruise.
Royal Caribbean has sent notifications to those travelers with similar information. Fortunately, those guests have two weeks to make alternative arrangements if necessary.
To be clear, there are no technical problems with the 168,666-gross-ton, Quantum-class ship. The change in debarkation and embarkation port is not a result of any propulsion difficulties or any other mechanical issues.
There should be no further impact on either sailing beyond the change in debarkation and embarkation port. No ports of call or onboard experiences need adjusting at this time, and the ship is ready to welcome up to 4,905 guests on each cruise.

Similarly, there has been no notification sent yet to the next set of northbound and southbound sailings, departing Vancouver and Seward on May 29 and June 5, respectively.
It is possible that the port construction impacting operations in Seward may be complete by that time and no change will be necessary for those or other future sailings. Royal Caribbean will undoubtedly notify travelers as soon as any changes may be confirmed.
Seward is currently replacing the passenger dock in a cooperative project with the Alaska Railroad, Royal Caribbean Group, Turnagain Marine, and the Seward Company. According to the city’s official site, the project should be completed and open this spring.
What Can Impact Homeport Operations?
Changing homeports is not a common occurrence for cruise ships, but it is not unprecedented. Whenever unusual circumstances impact a homeport, it may be necessary for ships to change where they embark or debark guests.
For example, this can happen during hurricane season when a storm may threaten one homeport but another port is able to receive the ship. This could be the case if one homeport is damaged and it may be several days or weeks before it could reopen.
When the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed in March 2024, both Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean temporarily relocated operations to Norfolk to keep cruises sailing from an alternative homeport.
Cruise Hive has also reported on homeport changes from flooding, berth availability, and other unusual circumstances affecting ships from different lines and in different sailing regions.
These situations can certainly be challenging for guests, but the cruise lines do offer whatever assistance they can to help keep the experience as smooth and efficient as possible.
