Norwegian Cruise Ship Suffers Technical Difficulties and Delays

Norwegian Sun, currently sailing on a 20-night Panama Canal cruise, has experienced technical issues since April 24 during its stop in Cartagena, Colombia.

The problems have led to power outages and the air conditioning system going offline. Although technical teams have worked diligently to resolve the situation, the ship remains docked in Cartagena on Tuesday.

At the very least, the scheduled transit of the Panama Canal will not happen today, while the impact on the remaining port calls on the Pacific coast remains unclear.

Extended Stay in Cartagena Due to Electrical Difficulties

Just days after departing from Miami on April 21, guests onboard Norwegian Sun have been quite literally left in the dark, as the 78,309 gross tons Sky-class cruise ship has been experiencing technical difficulties since arriving in Cartagena, Colombia, on April 24.

Norwegian Sun’s Captain Maksym Kyselov sent a letter to guests on April 24, stating that the stay in Cartagena would be extended due to technical problems. However, the issues appear more severe than initially anticipated as the cruise ship remains docked in Cartagena today, April 25.

Captain Maksym Kyselov: “We are committed to delivering exceptional guest experiences at sea, however, at times, unexpected circumstances may arise. Earlier today, we experienced electrical difficulties, which resulted in some amenities going offline. Since then, services have begun to return. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused”

Consequently, the Panama Canal transit scheduled for April 25 has been cancelled and will be rescheduled for later this week. In the letter, Captain Kyselov expressed his regret for the inconvenience and informed guests that the all-aboard time for the day was extended to midnight to allow for more exploration of the city:

One guest contacted Cruise Hive and shared their experience: “Power has been out on Norwegian Sun most of the day. Ship staying overnight in Port of Cartagena, Colombia, while the crew works to fix electrical problems. Tuesday’s Panama Canal transit won’t happen. No further updates expected until the morning.”

Tension Grows Onboard

While many will understand the situation onboard, the delay is unfortunate for the guests who boarded the Norwegian Sun on April 21 for the 20 Night Panama Canal cruise. In a follow-up message from a passenger currently onboard Norwegian Sun, the tension onboard seems to grow with little communication from Norwegian Cruise Line.

“Frustrating to be 12:07 p.m. here in Colombia and no information regarding the situation. No Freestyle Daily newsletter has been distributed for today, nor any other communications except for a vague announcement by the captain at about 8:20 this morning that they are working on a new itinerary.”

That the situation is indeed quite serious shows as Norwegian Cruise Line was forced to close the dining rooms on April 24, and guests were offered a buffet only for dinner.

“The dining rooms were closed for dinner last night. Only a lackluster buffet was offered. Although this is certainly annoying, we do appreciate NCL’s desire not to set sail without full power. And we’re lucky this problem happened while we were in port and not at sea.”

Impact on Cruise Itinerary

Norwegian Sun‘s itinerary covers multiple ports from April 21 to May 11. The cruise began in Miami, Florida, on April 21, followed by the now-extended stop in Cartagena, Colombia, on April 24.

From Cartagena, the cruise was scheduled to visit Puntarenas, Costa Rica, on April 27 and San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, on April 28. Subsequent stops include Acajutla, El Salvador, on April 29 and Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala, on April 30. The call in Nicaragua has been cancelled as the port is not currently allowing cruise ships to dock.

The ship would then sail to Mexico, making port calls at Huatulco, Acapulco, Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas; Victoria, British Columbia in Canada, and arriving in Seattle on May 11.

It remains unclear how the delay in Cartagena and the rescheduling of the Panama Canal transit will affect the remaining itinerary of the Norwegian Sun cruise. Guests eagerly await updates on any possible changes to the schedule and how the cruise line plans to accommodate them.

Following the repositioning cruise to Seattle, Norwegian Sun will sail in Alaska this summer with 9, 10, and 11-day cruises with ports of call such as Sitka, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, and more.

First Look at Disney Cruise Line Anniversary Treats for Passengers

Disney Cruise Line is marking its 25th anniversary this year with a sugary collection of new desserts sure to tempt cruisers with a sweet tooth, along with a special adult beverage and a few other anniversary-inspired novelties.

The cruise line, which launched operations in 1998, has five ships sailing and two more on the way.

Sweet Treats to be Offered May to September

Cruisers sailing aboard a Disney Cruise Line ship from May to September will likely be hard-pressed to keep from indulging in one of several bakery concoctions designed with a celebratory flair in honor of the line’s 25th anniversary year.

To mark the cruise line’s Silver Anniversary at Sea festivities, Disney Cruise Line’s pastry chefs and mixologists have come up with a slew of flavorful goodies including a hallmark 25th Disney Cruise Line Cupcake. It’s a vanilla sponge cake with vanilla frosting topped with sprinkles and a 25th chocolate decoration.

Chocolate lovers will surely be drawn to the Mickey Chocolate Sphere, which also will sport the 25th decor emblem and be filled with candy. Captain Minnie gets in on the dessert action, too.

She’ll be featured on the Vanilla Crisped Rice Treat offered at the ships’ Cove Café locations. This treat shows Minnie at the ship’s helm with special décor for both her and the anniversary, since the cruise line announced earlier this month that Disney Treasure, set to debut in 2024, will feature a likeness of Minnie on the ship’s bow.

Cruisers also can enjoy the Disney Cruise Line Anniversary Chocolate Marquise, a rich chocolate truffle crème topped with the 25th chocolate décor.

Some other delights, found in the Concierge Lounge, include the Chocolate Cream Cookie, which is a chocolate cookie with dulce de leche filling and decorated with sprinkles and the Silver Anniversary at Sea logo, and the Celebration Cupcake, featuring a red velvet sponge cake with vanilla frosting, shimmering sprinkles, of course, and 25th chocolate décor.

Many desserts already on the Disney Cruise Line menu will get anniversary upgrades. For instance, the 3 Layer Carrot Cake with lemon frosting will be spruced up with 25th chocolate décor, as will the line’s classic Chocolate Soufflé, which tempts diners with double chocolate sauce, vanilla crèmeanglaise, and vanilla bean gelato.

Adult Cruisers Can Try a New Signature Cocktail

A special drink is on the horizon, too. For adults 21 and older, the line has dreamed up its signature Jubilee by the Sea cocktail, which combines 818 Blanco Tequila, Luxardo Maraschino, and fresh lemon juice with a silver dusting and a blue sugar rim. Cruisers can take home a bookmark with the drink’s recipe on it.

Cruisers who order any drink are likely to have it served with 25th anniversary coasters and napkins, adding to the festive atmosphere. Additionally, at various beverage locations onboard the ships, guests will be able to purchase special Coca-Cola bottles adorned with the Silver Anniversary at Sea logo.

Other novelty items will be featured for purchase as well, such as the Silver Anniversary at Sea Popcorn Bucket, showcasing each of the Disney Cruise Line ships, plus coffee and beer mugs with the celebratory logo.

Disney Cruise Line’s fleet includes the 2,713-guest Disney Magic, the 2,400-guest Disney Wonder, the 4,000-guest Disney Dream, the 2,500-guest Disney Fantasy, and the 5,555-guest Disney Wish. When she debuts next year Disney Treasure will accommodate 4,000 guests.

A seventh ship, scheduled to enter service sometime after Disney Treasure, is the former Global Dream, which Disney Cruise Line bought in 2022 after its owner, Genting Hong Kong, was forced into liquidation. The ship was only partially built when Disney Cruise Line bought it. The ship is currently scheduled to eventually be deployed in Singapore.

New Zones Revealed for Upcoming Carnival Jubilee Cruise Ship

Carnival Cruise Line has revealed new themes for two zones aboard the upcoming Excel-class Carnival Jubilee, setting sail in December 2023.

The new ship will have a distinctive ocean theme “Currents” and “Shores” in two neighborhoods, with immersive décor and artwork emphasizing the nautical nature of the new ship.

New Zone Themes Revealed for Carnival Jubilee

Carnival Cruise Line has announced a fun and appropriately oceangoing theme for two of Carnival Jubilee‘s “zone” neighborhoods: Currents and Shores. You can take a look at all the new spaces reveled in the video below:

Currents

Currents will be the theme on Decks 6 and 7, a transformative space that brings guests below the waves and into fun underwater worlds with huge LED windows, a wave-shaped LED ceiling, theatrical show lighting, and captivating sound design for a truly immersive experience just aft of Grand Central.

Brand-new venues will carry the theme, including Dr. Inks, Ph.D (drinks, get it?) which is a fun bar inspired by a quirky sea creature – an octopus with a philosophical bent. Specialty ocean-themed drinks will include color-changing cocktails, jellyfish shots, and selections with boba pearls and unique garnishes that evoke undersea life.

The Golden Mermaid is another lounge in Currents, with secret cocktail recipes inspired by a mermaid’s explorations. Edible glitter, unique glassware, and specialty tastes will all be featured in the bar, while a live band provides an energetic atmosphere for guests to enjoy.

Emeril’s Bistro 717 is also located in Currents, with creole cuisine and an expansive seafood selection and raw bar. Serving delicious options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the menu includes delicious dishes such as shrimp and grits, fresh oysters, and Emeril’s signature jambalaya.

Also in the Currents zone will be guest favorites Alchemy Bar and Carnival Kitchen, as well as the entrances to the Atlantic Restaurant main dining room and the Limelight Lounge.

Shores

The Shores zone is located on Deck 8, and is a water-meets-waves theme inspired by how people enjoy the seaside including piers, boardwalks, and beaches.

Lanai in the The Shores Zone

Colorful designs in the space include a Ferris wheel-inspired ceiling, wood plank-styled floors, and tropical and festive hues throughout.

Coastal Slice will offer fresh, hot pizza, and Beach Buns is a deli-style venue for hot dogs and sandwiches. The Marina Bar includes more of the nautical theme with fish-scale wall patterns and a wooden ore beam ceiling. Seating is available both inside and outside for guests to connect with the water.

Also in Shores are popular and familiar venues such as Rudi’s Seagrill and Cucina del Capitano, along with the entrance to the Pixels gallery.

Connecting both Currents and Shores is a stunning sculpture of a school of fish, swirling three decks tall between Decks 6, 7, and 8 and surrounded by a glass staircase to bring guests between the themed zones.

Additional Zones

The four remaining zones aboard Carnival Jubilee are the same familiar themes already outrageously popular aboard Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration.

Grand Central is the heart of each ship, offering a transformative space with live entertainment enriched with innovative technology. Shopping, dining, and entertainment venues all branch off Grand Central, making it a meetup hub for all guests onboard.

The Ultimate Playground is the ship’s sports and thrill zone, with BOLT, the Ultimate Sea Coaster, along with the WaterWorks aqua park and SportSquare for every guest’s adventurous desires.

Summer Landing on Deck 8 aft is a relaxed, casual zone home to Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse as well as the Heroes Tribute Lounge and The Patio with a pool, whirlpools, and The Watering Hole poolside bar.

Finally, the ever-popular Lido on Decks 16 and 17 is the poolside zone and home to the Carnival Seaside Theater for blockbuster movies, as well as some of the cruise line’s most popular venues – RedFrog Tiki Bar, BlueIguana Cantina, Guy’s Burger Joint, and Shaquille O’Neal’s Big Chicken restaurant.

Setting Sail on Carnival Jubilee

Carnival Jubilee will be the third Excel-class for Carnival Cruise Line, sister ship to Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration.

Weighing in at 183,521 gross tons, the ship can welcome 5,374 guests at double occupancy, or up to 6,631 passengers when fully booked. Onboard, more than 1,700 international crew members will help ensure fun for all guests.

Though delayed from her initial debut date, Carnival Jubilee will now welcome guests aboard her inaugural sailing on December 23, 2023.

Homeported in Galveston, Texas, the ship will operate 7-night Western Caribbean sailings visiting Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico as well as Roatan, Honduras, with three days at sea for guests to thoroughly enjoy all the features the ship has to offer.

Carnival Cruise Line Begins Charging for Dining Venue

Carnival Cruise Line has begun testing extra charges for ChiBang, a specialty restaurant aboard the line’s two Excel-class ships, Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration.

At the moment, the extra charges apply only on Mardi Gras, and all guests are still able to enjoy some free meals at the venue. Additional meals, however, will now incur a nominal $8 per person charge.

New Dining Charge at ChiBang

Carnival Cruise Line has recently begun adding a surcharge to some meals at ChiBang onboard Mardi Gras. While all guests can still enjoy one complimentary dinner at the restaurant per sailing, as well as unlimited lunch visits with no charge, the second, third, and more dinner visits now have an $8 per guest surcharge.

The cruise line is testing out this new charge at the moment, only on Mardi Gras though the restaurant is also present on Carnival Celebration and will be part of the dining lineup on the upcoming Carnival Jubilee as well.

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald has addressed the change, noting that it is a limited charge and only a test at the moment.

“To give everyone an opportunity to dine in this unique venue, we are implementing a pilot project on Mardi Gras only, not on Carnival Celebration,” Heald explained. “All guests are welcome to enjoy a complimentary dinner during their voyage. A nominal charge of $8, per guest, will be assessed for additional visits.”

The note that the charge is “to give everyone an opportunity to dine in this unique venue” indicates the test is, at least in part, a way to manage crowds on a ship that can welcome 5,282 guests at double occupancy, or up to 6,465 guests when fully booked.

The $8 (USD) charge is certainly minimal, and only applies after a guest’s first dinner at ChiBang. “Lunch remains complimentary for everyone irrespective of the number of visits,” Heald confirmed.

The new charge only applies on Mardi Gras, not Carnival Celebration, and thus far, is not expected onboard Carnival Jubilee when she debuts from Galveston in December. This plan could change, however, depending on the success of the test period and guest feedback.

About ChiBang on Carnival Cruise Line

ChiBang is a unique dual-menu dining venue, featuring both Chinese and Mexican dishes, but not a fusion-style menu. Instead, guests can select from both menus for their appetizers and entrees, enjoying either Chinese or Mexican tastes, or both. Specialty desserts are also included.

“Mardi Gras is truly a game-changing ship and that, of course, includes her amazing dining options which offer our guests a broad spectrum of cuisines from around the world,” said Cyrus Marfatia, Carnival’s vice president of culinary and dining.

Guest feedback drove the decision to create ChiBang and offer both Chinese and Mexican dishes, menus that were not previously available at other specialty venues in the Carnival fleet.

ChiBang’s delicious menu options include egg drop soup, shrimp pot stickers, lettuce wraps, Kung Pao chicken, mandarin honey crunch salad, and hakka noodles for Chinese flavors, with sopas, queso fundido, carnitas, steak ranchero, camarones diablo, and frijoles providing Mexican tastes.

For dessert, guests can enjoy coconut tea tres leches cake, crema catalana, or the specialty chocolate “C-Bang” chocolate and salted fudge ganache with ginger and caramel ice cream.

Free Onboard Dining Venues

Mardi Gras features more than 15 dedicated dining venues, many of which remain included in the cruise fare. In addition to the main dining rooms, guests can enjoy Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, or Shaq’s Big Chicken for casual fare, with Lido Marketplace providing the all-you-can-eat buffet.

Street Eats is another unique option for a rotating menu of unique tastes, or guests can indulge in amazing barbecue at Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que. Unlimited ice cream and frozen yogurt is available at Swirls, while Pizzeria del Capitano has a selection of delicious pizzas.

Norwegian Cruise Line Releases New Video on Bold Climate Targets

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has unveiled new short- and near-term greenhouse gas (GHG) targets as part of an updated climate action strategy, aiming to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

The company’s global sustainability program, Sail & Sustain, will concentrate on three main pillars; Efficiency, Innovation, and Collaboration. These include improving the fleet’s energy usage, developing technologies that enable the use of green fuels, and seeking partnerships to develop green fuels.

Ambitious Greenhouse Gas Reduction Goals

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) has set ambitious goals in its climate action strategy to reduce greenhouse gas intensity by 10% by 2026 and 25% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. The targets include emissions from the company’s ships, islands, and facilities and activities related to fuel production and energy sourcing.

You can watch the newly released video below:

These interim goals are part of Norwegian’s commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050, including its entire greenhouse gas footprint.

Harry Sommer, President and CEO-Elect of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd., said: “We are proud to further refine and strengthen our climate action strategy and commitments including by setting milestone GHG intensity reduction targets which will guide us on our ambitious pursuit of net zero by 2050.”

At the same time, NCLH former CEO has been clear in the past the company will not be pursuing LNG-powered ships, as many others in the cruise industry are doing. Instead, Norwegian is focusing on three separate ‘pillars’ to reach its goals.

Focusing on Efficiency, Innovation, and Collaboration

NCLH has developed its climate action strategy around three central pillars, Efficiency, Innovation, and Collaboaration. Efficiency involves improving the existing fleet’s energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions.

NCLH plans to achieve this through investments in systems and technologies, equip approximately 70% of its fleet with shore power technology by 2025, and implementing smart itinerary and voyage planning.

Innovation is centered on the development of long-term solutions and technologies that enable the use of green fuels, such as methanol and biofuels. In 2022, the company successfully tested biofuel blends on multiple ships.

Norwegian has already been taking steps to reach this goal by modifying the plans for two future Prima Class newbuilds using green methanol

“We also recently took an important step forward on our pursuit of net zero by announcing the modification of two of our future Prima Class newbuilds to accommodate the use of green methanol in the future,” Sommer continued.

Collaboration, the third pillar, stresses the importance of working with stakeholders to collectively address climate change. Norwegian is creating partnerships to develop green fuels and participates actively in industry associations and regional forums, such as the Methanol Institute and the Pacific Northwest to Alaska Green Corridor initiative.

The Pacific Northwest to Alaska Green Corridor initiative is a collaborative effort between ports, governments, and cruise operators in the region.

The initiative aims to explore the establishment of a maritime green corridor that accelerates the deployment of zero greenhouse gas emission ships and operations between Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington.

In the last weeks, all major cruise operators have revealed their plans that should take them to 2050 and becoming net zero carbon. Carnival Corporation, MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean Group have set their sights on LNG as a transitional fuel, as well as a large number of other innovations.

Another Sailing Cancelled for Iconic Cunard Ship

Shortly after cancelling a Queen Mary 2 transatlantic crossing at the very last minute on embarkation day, Cunard has also reached out to guests booked aboard the following sailing – a return transatlantic trip from New York to Southampton – that the second voyage is also cancelled.

Because that sailing is a week away, guests have slightly more flexibility to arrange alternative travel plans if necessary.

Second Crossing Cancelled for Queen Mary 2

Guests have been notified that the April 30, 2023 transatlantic crossing of Queen Mary 2 from New York to Southampton has been cancelled for the same “technical issue” that caused the last minute cancellation of the April 23 sailing even as guests were heading to the cruise terminal.

The April 30 crossing was to be the beginning of a 26-night roundtrip voyage for some travelers, going from New York to Southampton, then visiting Hamburg, Germany, briefly before exploring the Norwegian Fjords with four different ports of call. The ship would then return to Hamburg for a second visit before returning to Southampton.

The following leg of the cruise would be from Southampton to Paris (Le Havre), then on to New York, arriving on May 26 to complete the round-trip loop.

Queen Mary 2
Queen Mary 2

While guests booked aboard the second now-cancelled crossing may also receive a full refund of their cruise fare plus a 20% future cruise credit (FCC) for a future sailing, they do have another option.

Because the second crossing was to have been part of a longer trip with multiple legs, guests booked on the more expanded itinerary may also make their own arrangements to reach Southampton on May 7, 2023 to join the ship for the sailing to the Norwegian fjords and on to the westbound crossing back to New York.

No word is available on whether Cunard will be assisting with those travel plans, including any compensation for the missing portion of the trip, but it does give guests more options for continuing what would undoubtedly be a once-in-a-lifetime sailing.

Guests with travel insurance should contact their insurance carrier right away to discuss options either for the full cancellation or the abridged trip as applicable.

Why the Cancellation?

Cunard has informed guests that both cruises are cancelled for a “technical issue” that cannot be repaired quickly, and the ship is unable to sail until the repair is completed.

There is no detail on what type of technical issue is causing the difficulties, nor which of the ship’s systems is impacted, but it is likely a safety or engineering issue that impacts the ship’s overall operation. “We are sincerely sorry for the inconvenience this will cause,” the email to guests concluded.

Cruise lines must be very strict about repairs, particularly to safety systems or engines. It is possible that the type of repair Queen Mary 2 now requires may need the expertise of certain specialist engineers, or a specific type of replacement part or repair equipment that may take a few days to arrive at the ship.

Queen Mary 2 is the oldest ship actively sailing in the Cunard fleet, having been constructed in 2003 and officially debuted in 2004. In the 20 years since the vessel’s construction, there have been significant advances in engineering, materials, and other aspects of ship design, and it may be challenging for the cruise line to procure certain replacement parts.

Weighing in at 149,215 gross tons, Queen Mary 2 is also the largest ship in the Cunard fleet and serves as the line’s flagship. She will also outweigh the 113,300-gross-ton Queen Anne when the new ship joins the fleet in spring 2024.

Queen Mary 2 was christened by Queen Elizabeth II, and has had a productive and memorable service life to date. Able to welcome 2,695 guests onboard for each cruise, Queen Mary 2 is staffed by more than 1,200 international crew members who provide the line’s signature elegant service for all aboard.

Norwegian Cancels Transatlantic Crossing Two Years Early

Norwegian Cruise Line has reached out to guests booked on Norwegian Breakaway‘s transatlantic crossing to alert them that the sailing is now cancelled – even though it wasn’t due to depart until February 2025.

The cancellation is due to a change for where the ship’s technical maintenance, a regularly scheduled drydock, will take place, which puts the vessel out of position to make the cruise efficiently.

Transatlantic Crossing Cancelled for Norwegian Breakaway

The February 7, 2025, departure for Norwegian Breakaway has been cancelled to better facilitate the ship’s regular maintenance and technical upgrades.

The 12-night cruise was to have been a transatlantic crossing, repositioning the ship from Miami, Florida to Barcelona, Spain for the summer season in the Mediterranean.

In between the crossing and beginning departures from European ports, the ship was planned to spend six weeks undergoing technical refurbishment and stateroom upgrades.

Those upgrades will still take place, but will now be at a different shipyard than originally planned, which means the transatlantic cruise – bringing the ship to Barcelona – is no longer possible in order for the ship to arrive for refurbishment on schedule.

Guests impacted by the cancellation have been notified, and their cruise fare is automatically being fully refunded back to the original form of payment. If guests paid for the now-cancelled cruise with a future cruise credit (FCC), that credit is being automatically returned to their loyalty account.

As a further gesture of goodwill, Norwegian Cruise Line is also providing all booked guests with an (FCC) with a value of 10 percent of the cruise fare. The FCC must be used toward any published sailing through December 31, 2025.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” the email to guests concluded. After the dry dock, the 145,655-gross-ton Norwegian Breakaway is still scheduled for a summer of Mediterranean sailings.

Other 2025 Norwegian Cruise Line Transatlantic Cruises

Transatlantic cruises, while once the only way to move across the Atlantic Ocean, today are amazing voyages and once-in-a-lifetime sailings for many cruise travelers. Because there are only a few such sailings each year, the cancellation of Norwegian Breakaway‘s cruise will be a disappointment to everyone already booked.

Fortunately, the cancellation is early enough – nearly 22 months prior to sailing – that guests should not have difficulty changing their travel plans while still enjoying a transatlantic cruises. (Unlike Cunard, which recently cancelled a transatlantic crossing on embarkation day!)

Norwegian Bliss has a transatlantic crossing scheduled to depart Miami, Florida on January 4, 2025, visiting the Azores, Portugal, Spain, and France on its way to Southampton, England, and will return in reverse order one month later, departing Southampton on February 2 for a westbound transatlantic sailing back to Miami.

On March 31, 2025, Norwegian Epic is setting sail from New York to reposition to Rome, and will visit Bermuda, the Azores, Portugal, Spain, France, and other ports of call in Italy along the 15-night sailing.

Norwegian Pearl is offering a 14-night transatlantic from New York to Southampton departing on April 24, 2025, calling on ports in Canada, Iceland, Ireland, and France along the way. Norwegian Prima is doing a similar itinerary just three days later, departing New York on April 27, 2025.

With so many options and nearly two years to make plans, guests eager for a transatlantic sailing are sure to still find fantastic cruises that will exceed their vacation expectations.

Cunard Cancels Transatlantic Crossing on Embarkation Day

Guests planning to set sail aboard Queen Mary 2 for a classic transatlantic crossing on April 23, 2023 were notified the morning of embarkation that the cruise is now cancelled for a technical issue.

Generous compensation is being offered for the extremely last-minute cancellation, but guests may face many difficulties to replace a transatlantic sailing.

Last Minute Cancellation of Queen Mary 2 Crossing

The elegant Queen Mary 2 will not be making her 7-night transatlantic crossing from Southampton to New York departing on April 23, 2023 as planned.

Instead, booked guests were notified via email and text message just hours before embarkation that the cruise had been cancelled due to a technical problem that requires immediate repair.

“Queen Mary 2 Arrived into Southampton last night for assessment of a technical issue,” the email read. “Unfortunately, after further investigation, it has been confirmed that this work will take longer to resolve than anticipated and the ship is unable to sail until this is completed.”

The type of technical issue has not been disclosed, but it may be related to the ship’s propulsion, safety operation, or other critical systems.

There is no indication that the ship will move into dry dock or be taken to a different shipyard for extensive repair, but delays in receiving proper replacement parts could be a concern.

At this time, only the 7-night crossing from April 23-30 is impacted, with no indication about whether or not the ship’s next voyage, a return crossing one-way from New York back to Southampton, will also be cancelled. Guests booked on that sailing should stay in close contact with Cunard as well as their travel agent for updates.

“We are sincerely sorry for the inconvenience this will cause,” the email concludes.

Generous Compensation Offered

Due to the last-minute nature of the cancellation, all guests are receiving a full refund of their cruise, as well as a future cruise credit (FCC) equal to 20% of the monies paid.

The credit will be registered to guests’ Cunard World Club member numbers, and will be valid on any future booking until April 23, 2025.

Any pre-booked shore tours arranged through Cunard are also being fully refunded to the original method of payment. If guests booked tours independently, they will need to reach out to those tour operators to discuss options.

How to Get to New York or Southampton

Because the cancelled cruise was to have been a one-way journey, many guests using the ship to travel home to New York are now without transportation plans, while guests on the return April 30 crossing may be similarly left without arrangements if the ship cannot be repaired and make it to New York in time for the next sailing.

Guests will likely need to make their own arrangements either to fly to New York if necessary, or else to arrange a different transatlantic cruise from Southampton to replace the cancelled sailing, or from New York to Southampton for the following week if a second Queen Mary 2 cruise is cancelled.

Queen Mary in New York

Because many cruise lines are currently repositioning ships to Europe for the summer sailing season, a number of vessels are making transatlantic journeys from North America to Europe.

Royal Caribbean International, for example, has three ships crossing the Atlantic in the coming days.

Anthem of the Seas is departing May 1, 2023, from New York to Southampton via an 11-night sailing with ports of call in the Azores and France, while Rhapsody of the Seas is sailing a 17-night crossing from Miami to Haifa, Israel departing on April 29. Enchantment of the Seas is leaving New York on April 30, 2023 to reposition to Rome, Italy via a 15-night cruise.

If guests can delay their plans to reach Europe and are able to make more convoluted arrangements, Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, Norwegian Prima, is sailing from New York on May 14 and will arrive in Reykjavic, Iceland on May 25, with a second cruise onward to Southampton that will arrive in England on June 4.

Guests will be unable to make similar sailing arrangements through Cunard, as the line’s other two ships are not sailing similar crossings at this time.

Queen Elizabeth is currently sailing in Asia and will not return to European waters until September, while Queen Victoria has a full schedule of round-trip European sailings.

Threat of Icebergs Cancels Ports for Norwegian Cruise Ship

Guests aboard the Norwegian Dawn transatlantic crossing are not going to enjoy as many ports of call as they planned for, as just one day after setting sail, the ship’s master has notified passengers that two ports visits are unable to be kept on the itinerary – one due to icebergs and another due to weather.

Some compensation is being provided, but not all guests are pleased with the result, given that two full ports are being cancelled.

Norwegian Dawn Transatlantic Sailing Adjusted

Norwegian Dawn departed on her transatlantic repositioning sailing between New York and Southampton on Thursday, April 20, 2023.

The very next day, guests received letters in their staterooms notifying them that two upcoming ports were being cancelled – St. Pierre & Miquelon, as well as St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Both ports are northeast of New York along the route to Iceland, but are currently posing hazardous conditions for visiting cruise ships.

“Unfortunately, due to the presence of icebergs near St. John’s, Newfoundland and forecasted adverse weather conditions enroute to Reykjavik, Iceland, our itinerary has been revised,” the email, signed by the ship’s captain, Asen Gyurov, explained.

Norwegian Dawn Cruise Ship

Norwegian Dawn was to have called on St. Pierre & Miquelon on Sunday, April 23 from 12:30-8 p.m., and on St. John’s on Monday, April 24 from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The two ports of call are approximately 260 miles (418 kilometers) apart for sailing distance, but just 185 miles (298 km) in a straight line measurement.

Weather in the region is forecast with showers and strong winds reaching 20 miles per hour (32 kilometers per hour) or higher on the previously scheduled port days, conditions that can make either docking or tendering too dangerous.

Furthermore, a visit on such poor weather days would be a very disappointing experience for guests and could result in cancelled excursions.

The ship was able to visit Halifax, Nova Scotia, successfully on Saturday, April 22, and the remainder of the ports of call are unchanged at this time.

During the 14-night cruise, Norwegian Dawn will also call on Reykjavik, Iceland; Belfast and Dublin in Ireland, and Paris in France, before arriving in Southampton on Thursday, May 4, 2023.

Compensation Offered

Because two ports of call are cancelled with no alternative ports being offered, Norwegian Cruise Line is providing guests with $25 of onboard credit each for the first and second guests in each stateroom (maximum of $50 per stateroom). That credit is non-refundable, but can be used for onboard purchases.

All shore excursions booked through the cruise line for the now-cancelled ports of call are being automatically cancelled and fully refunded to guests’ onboard accounts.

There is no word on whether taxes and fees may be refunded for the missed ports, and not all guests onboard are pleased with the compensation offer, considering the ship will now spend half of the lengthy sailing – a full seven days – at sea.

It must be noted, however, that any cruise line can alter a ship’s itinerary for any reason, and many cruises lose ports of call due to weather.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Guest Ticket Contract explicitly outlines that the cruise line may “cancel any scheduled call at any port for any reason and at any time before, during or after sailing of the vessel.”

Are Icebergs Really a Threat?

The idea that icebergs might be of concern in late April can be a surprise to travelers who may be accustomed to setting sail in more tropical destinations, but icebergs are a real threat to cruise ship safety and navigation throughout the year.

In late June 2022, Norwegian Sun hit a small iceberg while sailing in the Hubbard Glacier area, resulting in a mid-cruise cancellation and several cruises cancelled afterward while the ship underwent repairs.

Furthermore, one of the world’s most famous cruise ships – Titanicstruck an iceberg and sank in mid-April 1912, roughly 550 miles (885 km) southeast of Newfoundland; well south of Norwegian Dawn‘s itinerary route.

With these ports of call cancellations, the 92,250-gross-ton Norwegian Dawn can take a much safer route and be sure guests enjoy their transatlantic crossing in comfort.
