Carnival Cruise Line Debunks Recent Concerns and Rumors

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald has responded to a range of wild rumors, questions, and concerns this week, addressing popular topics of concern to guests.

From tablecloths to toppings bars to loyalty gifts to ducks, Carnival Cruise Line remains responsive to guests concerns and ensuring everyone has a fun and enjoyable cruise.

Line Ambassador Addresses Rumors and Concerns

John Heald is the official “brand ambassador” for Carnival Cruise Line, and as such, he maintains a strong social media presence and regularly addresses guests’ questions and concerns.

At times, those concerns may seem silly, while other questions may be based on misinformation or asking about future options. What crazy topics has Heald addressed recently?

New Charges for the Guy’s Burgers Toppings Bar

Guy’s Burger Joint is one of the most popular eateries onboard Carnival ships, serving up fresh-grilled smash burgers and delicious fries. One of the biggest attractions of the burgers is the toppings bar, where guests can add onions, lettuce, tomatoes, condiments, and other deliciousness to truly make their burger unique.

A rash of comments to Heald have mentioned the toppings bar and the incessant rumor that Carnival Cruise Line will soon begin charging guests for access to customize their burger.

“As Jacinta [Heald’s assistant] and I have had to answer ‘this is not true’ countless times over the last few days I thought I would let everyone know. The toppings are at no charge,” Heald confirmed.

This rumor began as an April Fool’s post from another website, and quickly went viral as readers did not finish the article and see the “April Fools!” note at the end.

While the toppings bar does occasionally shift its offerings – bacon is not always available, for example, and lately there have been fewer mushrooms offered to smother one’s burger – it remains free and available for all Guy’s Burger Joint lovers to enjoy.

Lack of Tablecloths

Many cruise travelers love the elegance of the main dining room, and part of that elegance can be crisp linen tablecloths. Carnival Cruise Line, however, no longer uses tablecloths on all but one of its ships, and guests have noticed and wondered why.

Carnival Spirit does still use tablecloths, but the reason isn’t due to elegance, nor is Carnival Cruise Line working to have more casual dining room experiences by removing the linens – it’s just a matter of environmental sustainability.

“Carnival Spirit has them because the ship does not have the beautiful gloss finished tables that all the other ships have,” Heald explained. “The ship will, I am sure, eventually have these tables added.”

Likely, this change may be made during a future drydock or renovation, when there is time available to change out the hundreds of tables in Carnival Spirit‘s Empire restaurant, the two-story main dining room.

“Tablecloths will not be returning,” Heald confirmed for the rest of the fleet. “The cost to the environment of having to wash thousands of them each week is not something we will return to doing.”

VIFP Gift Delivery

With new VIFP gifts being offered to loyal cruisers in the coming weeks, some guests have asked about whether or not gifts will be hand-delivered to individual staterooms, as was done before protocols were implemented during the industry-wide shutdown to minimize how many people enter different cabins.

Heald did consult with management – which he calls “the beards” – about beginning stateroom gift delivery again.

“However, having read so many negative comments from people saying they do not want the gift and would either throw it away, etc., I think this is not the time to do this,” he said. “For now, please do collect the bag from the [Pixels] Photo Gallery.”

The new fanny pack / bum bag gift, a navy blue bag with a red zipper and VIFP patch, is scheduled to debut starting from April 6 on all Carnival cruise ships except Carnival Luminosa and Carnival Splendor, which are still waiting for delivery of the items.

Cruising Ducks Discarded Overboard

The cruising duck phenomenon is making a splash aboard all cruise lines, but none more so than aboard Carnival, where the trend really took off in 2018. Hiding small rubber ducks around cruise ships has become a fun game and an expression of kindness.

While it is not an official cruise activity, Heald recently addressed the idea that crew members who find ducks are throwing them overboard.

“This is completely untrue,” Heald said. “If any crew member throws anything overboard they would be in serious trouble and would for sure face disciplinary action.”

Just as many cruisers enjoy finding ducks, so do many crew members enjoy discovering the quirky surprises. “Many of the crew love finding the ducks and have them in their cabins as they bring them cheer,” Heald explained.

Anyone who does not like the ducks does not need to participate in the activity, and can simply leave the cruising ducks wherever they have been hidden for another guest to discover.

Getting Your Questions Answered

No matter what type of question or concern a cruiser may have, Carnival Cruise Line always tries to provide correct and timely information.

This is why it is important for booked guests to be familiar with their cruise contract, to give the cruise line their updated contact information in case of alerts or changes, and to take the time to choose the very best cruise line to meet their travel expectations.

Cruises Cancelled Unexpectedly for MSC Cruise Ship

MSC Cruises has announced the cancellation of multiple cruises scheduled for April 2023 due to the extended shipyard stay of the MSC Seaview in Malta. The company is now working to accommodate affected passengers.

The drydock period for MSC Seaview was supposed to take just two weeks. However, this timeline has now more than doubled.

Unexpected Delays Lead to Cancelled MSC Seaview Cruises

MSC Cruises has been forced to cancel several cruises in April 2023. The cruise ship arrived in Paolo, Malta, on March 31, 2023, following its last voyage, which concluded in Barcelona two days prior. The ship was initially scheduled to spend two-and-a-half weeks in dry dock before resuming cruising on April 17 in Genoa, Italy.

However, the nearly five-year-old ship is now facing longer-than-expected repair times, according to Kreuzfahrt Aktuelles. This has led to the cancellation of seven cruises, with guests being informed by MSC Cruises about the changes to their plans.

During the shipyard period in Malta, technical and inspection work was planned for MSC Seaview. It is not clear what the exact issue is that is taking longer, although several online sources mention extensive engine work that is being performed. The cruise ship’s sistership, MSC Seaside, suffered engine problems in July last year, forcing the vessel into dry dock for repairs.

The cancelled cruises include those departing from Genoa on April 17, 24, and May 1; Civitavecchia on April 19 and 26; and Palma de Mallorca on April 21 and 28.

MSC Cruises is working to accommodate affected customers and provide them with alternative options for their travel plans while also providing them with onboard credit to be used on a future voyage. MSC Seaview is now expected to resume operations on May 3, departing from Civitavecchia – two and a half weeks later than initially scheduled.

MSC Seaview: Summer in Europe and Winter in Brazil

Upon resuming operations, the MSC Seaview will spend the 2023 summer season cruising the Western Mediterranean through November 18. During the winter month, the cruise ship will sail around Brazil.

During the summer, guests can sail on week-long voyages from various ports in the Western Mediterranean, including La Spezia, Barcelona, Cannes, and Genoa. MSC Cruises offers passengers the flexibility to begin and end their cruises at different ports, with the cruise duration also variable.

From November 18 to December 5, 2023, MSC Seaview will sail on a 17-night MSC Grand Voyage cruise. The voyage will start in Genoa, Italy, on November 18, before going to Palma de Mallorca, Cartagena, and Malaga, Spain.

Following the calls in Spain, MSC Seaview will visit Casablanca, Morocco, and the Canary Islands, from where the ship will sail across the Atlantic Ocean. In Brazil, the ship will visit Salvador de Bahia and Ilheus and conclude in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on December 5.

The 153,516 gross tons MSC Seaview is a Seaside-class cruise ship constructed by Fincantieri, in Monfalcone, Italy. Delivered in June 2018, the 4,132-guest cruise ship is the sister ship to MSC Seaside

MSC Cruises Marks Milestone With 12 Million in Donations

Donations from guests sailing aboard the MSC Cruises’ fleet have made it possible for the line to reach a major milestone in its financial contributions to UNICEF, the nonprofit humanitarian agency that helps children across the globe. The fundraising effort onboard MSC Cruises’ 19-ship fleet is coordinated by the MSC Foundation.

Fundraising Passes 12 Million Euro Mark

MSC Cruises, for the past 13 years, has partnered with UNICEF in a program that accepts donations from cruise guests who wish to contribute to the line’s fundraising efforts. The line announced on April 5 that the “Get On Board With Children” campaign has surpassed the 12 million euro mark, or roughly $13 million.

Through its partnership in helping to fund six UNICEF programs, the MSC Foundation since 2009 has extended financial aid to children in eight countries.

The donated funds have provided desperately needed food to more than 115,000 children suffering from severe malnutrition in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia and Malawi, and have supported education programs for some 8,000 children in more than 100 communities in Brazil. Monies also have been distributed to mitigate malaria in African countries and to boost China’s food supplement program that prevents child malnutrition.

MSC Foundation Executive Director Daniela Picco said, “It is an honor to work hand in hand with UNICEF. Our partnership has grown from strength to strength ever since we set out together 13 years ago. It’s been a journey of great teamwork, working on very different programs across the world, but always achieving incredible results for the children.”

She added, “We are extremely proud of this new milestone and very grateful for the generous donations of the millions of MSC Cruises guests who have been moved to assist UNICEF’s wonderful work over these years.”

As part of the “Get On Board With Children” campaign, MSC Cruises also offers shipboard edutainment activities meant to engage young cruisers. The line’s Kids United magazine, for instance, is designed to ben an interactive way for children to learn about important topics as part of their cruise experience.

Multi-faceted Aid Programs Across The Globe

The MSC Foundation’s work with UNICEF doesn’t end with financial assistance to children’s programs. Recent initiatives that benefitted from guest donations include helping communities affected by flooding in Malawi, and by severe weather events in Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

In 2019 the foundation expanded its role with the humanitarian organization by becoming the first partner in a program called “Plastic Waste Goes to School,” in the West African nation of Ivory Coast. The project’s goal is to build schools using bricks constructed from recycled plastic waste. The program empowers the country’s vulnerable women by training them as plastic waste collectors.

So far, 188 women have participated in the program, which enables them to earn money working in the UNICEF-supported plastic waste factory. Some 1.3 million pounds of plastic already has been recycled into construction bricks that today are used in 112 classrooms. As a result, more than 6,000 children have access to those classrooms.

UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein CEO Bettina Junker said: “We are extremely grateful that our partnership with the MSC Foundation has reached yet another impressive milestone with EUR 12 million donations to date. We highly appreciate the MSC Foundation’s generous support and powerful awareness-building around UNICEF’s work. We look forward to the next chapter in our partnership and are excited to continue driving change for children and young people every day.”

MSC World America to Debut in 2025

MSC Cruises currently has four ships sailing Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from North American ports. The ship is being designed specifically for the US market, and will accommodate 5,240 guests and 2,138 crew. Once home-ported in Miami, the ship will operate 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises.

Eastern Caribbean itineraries will call at Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, The Bahamas. Western Caribbean sailings will visit Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and the MSC Marine Reserve.

Richard Branson’s Virgin Voyages Seeks New Funding

Sir Richard Branson’s cruise-line venture, Virgin Voyages, is in the early stages of seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in fresh funding from new and existing investors.

The new funding round comes as the Virgin Group founder faces financial turbulence in other parts of his business empire. Virgin Orbit has recently gone under, and Branson has been vocal about the impact of the pandemic on its leisure activities, although it is unclear what the impact has been on Virgin Voyages.

Virgin Voyages in Financial Turmoil?

According to Sky News, Virgin Voyages is planning a new investment round involving new and existing investors, with the company looking for hundreds of millions of dollars. Although it’s too early to determine the scale of the fundraising or the mix of debt and equity, it would involve.

Virgin Voyages’ latest talks about raising funding come just seven months after it secured $550 million from investors. With two ships in the pipeline for this year, one of which has already been delayed, it’s not unlikely the company needs funds to make it to the end of the year.

This disclosure of Virgin Voyages’ talks to secure new capital comes just days after Virgin Orbit, Sir Richard’s commercial satellites business, announced it would lay off the majority of its staff and cease operations due to a lack of funds. Branson injected $11 million into the business this week to fund the redundancies of nearly 700 staff members.

Despite the possible financial issues, Virgin Voyages has been extremely successful in doing what it set out to do. From the get-go, Virgin has been a company that has shaken up the cruise industry and has proven that a new cruise line can show up and be successful.

The adults-only cruise line launched in 2021, following a 15-month delay caused by COVID-19, with its maiden journey from Portsmouth in August of that year.

The company operates two cruise ships, the Scarlet Lady and the Valiant Lady, with a third vessel, the Resilient Lady, set to launch next month and a fourth, Brilliant Lady, due later this year.

The delay of its first ship due to the pandemic, a delay for its third ship due to global supply issues, and low occupancy levels in the year following the pandemic due to pandemic-related measures have certainly played a role in the company now searching for additional funds.

Virgin Voyages is continuing to sail and amaze guests on board, with the company adding a new destination in the Caribbean in January 2024.

New Caribbean Destination

Virgin Voyages is adding another new destination in the Caribbean, Antigua and Barbuda, showing the cruise line is continuing to develop its product despite the investments Virgin is seeking.

The fast-growing cruise hotspot of Saint John’s, the capital of Antigua and Barbuda, will begin receiving calls from Virgin Voyages in January 2024

Cruises that include calls to Antigua also include calls to Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Pointe A Pitre; Bridgetown, Barbados; Castries, St Lucia; and finally Antigua, before returning to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Juan Trescastro, VP of Global Destinations at Virgin Voyages, announced that Antigua will be a port of call for Brilliant Lady. The ship will stay in Antigua until 10 PM during each stop, giving guests more than enough time to explore what Antigua has to offer.

All three of the “ladyships” weigh in at 110,000 gross tons and can welcome as many as 2,700 guests per sailing, with 93% of the cabins offering ocean views and 86% of the cabins featuring spacious balconies.

Virgin Voyages currently has two ships sailing, Valiant Lady and Scarlet Lady. Resilient Lady is set to launch on May 14, 2023. Its first cruise is the seven-night Resilient Lady Athens Mermaiden itinerary.

Brilliant Lady is set to launch on December 24, 2023, with a five-night Brilliant Miami Mermaiden Holidays cruise, including stops in Puerto Plata/Amber Cove, St. Croix, and San Juan.

Norwegian Cruise Line Clarifies About Popular Prohibited Item

Norwegian Cruise Line has made a further adjustment to its prohibited items list, clarifying its new policy about guests bringing fans onboard. Now, the policy will permit small fans, subject to inspection and approval by ship’s security if necessary.

Policy Defined, Small Fans Now Permitted

Norwegian Cruise Line has clarified its new prohibition on fans, which are now listed on the cruise line’s prohibited items list.

When fans were recently added to the prohibited list, the inclusion only read “All types of fans including handheld, battery operated, electric etc.” which indicated that every type of fan, no matter its size or power source, would not be permitted onboard.

Travel Fan
Small Travel Fan

Now, the list item has been clarified to read “All types of fans with the exception of small electrical and battery-operated fans.”

While there is no specific size listed as acceptable, the list does go on to state that “fans are subject to confiscation by the ship’s security team for inspection and approval.”

“Small” is a subjective measurement, and fans come in a range of sizes from very tiny handheld personal fans that may run on AA batteries and measure just a couple of inches in diameter, to large towers, box fans, and stand fans with oscillating heads.

It’s fair to consider that most fans labeled specifically as portable, personal, or travel may be acceptable, while larger models are more likely to be rejected and confiscated.

The fan’s power source, no matter what size the fan may be, will also be a consideration as to whether or not a particular fan will be allowed, and fans may be inspected to be sure their cords and casings are also secure and present no risk of fire or injury.

Do You Need a Fan Onboard?

There was significant outcry when guests first learned of the outright ban on fans, as there are many reasons why cruise travelers often bring fans along.

For some, the white noise of a fan is necessary for more comfortable sleep, depending on overall noise levels, sounds of the ship, or whether or not a travel partner may snore.

For other travelers, slow or poor air circulation in a stateroom can make it less comfortable for sleeping, especially on tropical itineraries where temperatures are naturally higher. While cruise ships are air conditioned, extra airflow can make the room seem much cooler.

Guests who may have health conditions that cause excess perspiration or body temperature irregularities may need fans available to stay comfortable as well.

Finally, some cruisers also use a small fan to help dry swimwear, wet shoes and socks, or other clothing after a day at the beach or pool, so damp items will be ready to wear for the next day’s adventure. Most cruise ships do have small clotheslines available in the bathroom, but lack of air circulation can mean it may take many hours for something to dry.

Bringing Your Fan Onboard

For guests who do want to bring a fan on a Norwegian cruise ship, it is best to bring the smallest possible fan that will meet your needs. Choose a travel-sized fan or small portable fan if possible.

If you have used the same small fan for several years, it may be a good idea to upgrade to a new model that might be a bit smaller but more energy efficient, with lower power requirements that will be less of a concern to ship officials.

Less complicated fan models may also be more readily acceptable, so choose a simple fan to pack for a cruise vacation. Just in case the fan is confiscated at embarkation, it will not be as much of a loss if you are unable to retrieve it after the cruise.

Carnival Cruise Line Addresses Another Recent Price Increase

Carnival Cruise Line passengers have recently noticed price increases onboard. While the most attention has gone to WiFi and gratuity prices that have gone up on April 1, another price increase that has gotten people to become outraged is the bottled water price.

Carnival increased the price of a 12-pack of bottled water by more than double in November last year. However, as the price hikes receive online attention, comparisons with other cruise lines reveal that Carnival Cruise Line remains the cheapest option.

Bottled Water Price Increases on Carnival Cruise Line

Guests aboard Carnival cruise ships have started to notice further hikes in onboard prices, particularly for bottled water. In November last year, the price of a 12-pack of 16.9 oz. bottled water increased from $4.95 to $9.95. The attention to this issue was intensified as Carnival also increased the price of gratuities and Wi-Fi rates on April 1.

Carnival Bottled Water
Carnival Bottled Water

Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald addressed the water price issue: “Good morning again from Hockley and as I promised Stella in my opening post this morning I will indeed address the price of our bottled water. I am sure I have discussed this before but anyway, yes, prices did go up a bit recently with our bottled water because of inflation which I know many of you are facing on land as well.”

“The price of a 12-pack of Crystal water is $9.95. That works out to 0.83 cents a bottle. Still not too bad. I do not know what water prices are where you live, but when I fly and travel through airports, I head to the shops to buy bottled water and don’t even flinch when the checkout lady asks me for $3.99 or $5.00 if I want my water to come from a volcanic spring in Cleveland, Ohio.”

The cruise line has not changed the price for the 8-pack of bottled water at 50.72 oz. This package still remains at $20.00 per pack.

Onboard Carnival Cruise Line ships, guests can order bottled water in their cabins. However, it’s also possible to pre-order bottled water, and many other items, before the start of the cruise.

Read Also: How Do Cruise Ships Get Fresh Water?

Guests can make an order via the Carnival Cruise Line website, so it’s already in the cabin when the voyage begins. From a price point, there is no difference between pre-ordering a pack of bottled water to your cabin vs. ordering from room service while onboard.

Comparing Cruise Line Bottled Water Prices

Guests on John Heald’s Facebook page questioned whether Carnival Cruise Line’s water prices were more expensive than other lines.

As the previously mentioned Stella commented: “This is gouging. Carnival is taking advantage of us. I think it’s in bad taste to charge so much when other lines are reasonable about it. These are the things you should be writing about.”

Carnival Cruise Ship Bar

However, is this right? We’ve done some fact-checking, and here is a comparison of bottled water prices on different cruise lines:

  • Carnival: $9.95 for 12 12 oz. bottles
  • Royal Caribbean: $11.99 for 12 12 oz. bottles
  • MSC Cruises: $37 for 14 one-liter (24 oz. bottles) in the water package
  • Celebrity Cruises: Drinking tap water is free, or guests can purchase a premium beverage package that includes water.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line: $34.95 for 12 16.9 oz. bottles of water

As the above shows, despite the 101% price increase for water, Carnival Cruise Line remains the cheapest option for having bottled water delivered to your cabin.

Royal Caribbean comes in at a close second. Carnival’s policy does not currently allow guests to bring packaged water or sodas onboard, so purchasing through the cruise line is important for many.

MSC Cruises comes in third place; however, the Italy-based cruise line does not allow guests to bring drinks onboard. Celebrity Cruises offers reasonably priced drinks packages that include bottled water, and reports are that the tap water is also very drinkable. In last place, Norwegian Cruise Line with a pretty incredible $34.95 for 12 16.9 oz. bottles of water.

Although the price increase may be disconcerting for some guests, it is important to consider the overall value offered by each cruise line. In this case, Carnival Cruise Line still offers the most affordable option for bottled water.

Carnival Cruise Director Change Aboard Newest Ship

One of Carnival Cruise Line’s most popular cruise directors has returned to lead the Fun Squad team aboard the cruise line’s flagship, Carnival Celebration. Lee Mason has begun his new contract assignment with the cruise line, bringing his distinctive brand of fun and charismatic energy to the ship.

Cruise Director Handoff Complete

Lee Mason officially took back the microphone for Carnival Celebration this week with the ship’s Sunday, April 2, 2023 departure, a 7-night Eastern Caribbean sailing from Miami to Puerto Plata, San Juan, and St. Maarten.

The popular cruise director has been between contracts, but returned to Carnival Celebration recently to transition back into his leadership role. The handover period is used to help teams adjust to new leadership styles, and for a new or returning cruise director to learn any new policies or practices since their last contract.

Mason was the first cruise director assigned to Carnival Celebration when the ship debuted, and now returns to continue the fun.

“We’re about to set sail on my first cruise back of the contract,” Mason announced from the bridge just prior to the guest safety briefing on Sunday morning. “So much fun to be had!”

Mason takes over from another of the cruise line’s most popular cruise directors, Chris “The Flying Scotsman” Williams, who is now himself between contracts and enjoying time off with his family.

“It is always an honor and a joy to experience a cruise with [Williams] – he has done wonders for Celebration and the Fun Squad family here onboard,” said Mason.

Williams will return to Carnival Celebration in late July and will become the ship’s primary cruise director from July 31. Mason will once more become Carnival Celebration‘s cruise director in September. At the moment, there are no other cruise director assignments announced for Mason.

It is not unusual for cruise lines to move cruise directors around to different vessels, especially to fill in gaps for other cruise directors’ vacation periods, or to participate in training on different ship classes or in different sailing regions.

What Cruise Directors Do

No matter which ship he serves on, Mason brings a distinct personality and creative energy to his cruise director role.

Cruise directors work all over the ship with duties such as making shipboard announcements, introducing main production shows, hosting question-and-answer sessions, and leading dance parties and other special events, as well as greeting and interacting with guests.

Each one brings their own style to the role, whether it is through certain jokes, colorful outfits, dance moves, or other flairs that cruise passengers love. In fact, many frequent cruisers plan future sailings depending on where their favorite cruise directors are currently serving.

Mason has served with Carnival Cruise Line since November 2016, and has served as cruise director on a dozen ships across the fleet, including Carnival Celebration‘s sister ship, Mardi Gras.

Not only is Mason one of the line’s most popular cruise directors with guests, but he is also popular with the teams he leads. Mason has received several peer awards during his service with Carnival, including the Cast Champion Award, Peer Choice Award, and Leader of the Year Award.

Carnival Celebration is homeported from PortMiami, offering 7-night roundtrip Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean voyages calling on some of the region’s most popular ports, including St. Thomas, Roatan, Cozumel, and Costa Maya.

Select departures are also available for 8-night Southern Caribbean itineraries visiting Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao.

The 183,521-gross-ton ship can welcome 5,374 guests aboard at double occupancy, or as many as 6,500 passengers when fully booked. Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras will be joined by their third Excel-class sister ship, Carnival Jubilee, in November 2023, which will be homeported from Galveston, Texas.
