Social Media Helps Locate Missing Cruise Ship Passenger

Thanks to social media posts that were shared by many concerned community members, a teenage girl missing from Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Spirit has been safely located and reunited with her family. Thankfully, what must have been a worrying time for the girl’s family was able to have a happy ending.

Teen Missing From Norwegian Spirit

When Norwegian Spirit docked in Dunedin, New Zealand on Saturday, December 30, 2023, one family went ashore for fun exploration that quickly turned frightening when a 15-year-old girl named Cameron was separated from her parents and missing in the city.

Cameron – whose last name has not been identified to preserve her and her family’s privacy – did have a cell phone, but did not have a New Zealand sim card. Therefore, the phone could not be used to contact her parents or for her parents to locate her via any tracking features.

When the girl was noted as missing, her parents quickly alerted authorities, who then spread the word via social media posts and outreach, including Cameron’s description – 5.5 feet tall, wearing black leggings and a black crop top, and with a dark red hoodie.

Time was of the essence to locate the missing teen, as Norwegian Spirit was scheduled to depart Dunedin at 4 p.m. that afternoon. Cruise ships must keep very strict schedules and it is well known that passengers may be left behind if they do not return to the ship for the scheduled departure.

Fortunately, a member of the public spotted Cameron after seeing the social media posts, and was able to alert local police. An officer then found the girl and reunited her with her parents, well before the ship’s departure.

“The missing girl was located by someone who had seen our original Facebook post,” said a statement by the Southern District Police. “Police would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our wonderful Dunedin community, who shared that original Facebook post and got the word out far and wide.”

The 75,904-gross-ton, Leo-class Norwegian Spirit is currently sailing a 12-night holiday cruise that departed Sydney, Australia on Saturday, December 23. The ship has already called in Melbourne and enjoyed beautiful cruising in Fiordland National Park. After Dunedin, the ship will visit Wellington, Picton, Napier, and Tauranga before arriving in Auckland on Thursday, January 4.

Keeping Safe in Ports of Call

While the details of how Cameron was separated from her parents have not been disclosed, there are many ways a family could inadvertently become separated in a busy port of call.

Dunedin is the second-largest city on South Island, after Christchurch, with a population of nearly 135,000 people. Port areas can be notoriously crowded, especially around security stations, popular retail shops, or areas where tour buses may be picking up or dropping off cruise passengers.

As Norwegian Spirit can welcome 2,018 guests aboard for each sailing, this can make for a very crowded port area indeed. Also in port at the same time Cameron went missing was Regent Seven Seas’ Cruises Seven Seas Explorer, adding as many as another 750 passengers to the port crowds.

It would be very easy for any teen to have been looking at items in a shop, or perhaps taking a selfie at a spot with a great view, or even simply looking for a restroom and get disoriented, unable to find their parents again.

Parents should always try to stick close by their children, though with teens this is often less practical. Using walkie-talkies could be a way to stay in contact even if a family becomes separated, though the range is often very limited.

A pre-arranged meeting spot and time, someplace very visible and easy to find, is another option families and groups could use if they become separated.

Children of all ages should also be instructed to seek out authority figures if they become lost, such as local police or even to ask a store employee for assistance.

Carnival to Celebrate New Year’s Eve Across the Fleet and Ashore

Carnival Cruise Line certainly knows how to party, and there’s no better time to party than New Year’s Eve. While every ship in the fleet will have festivities onboard to ring in 2024, guests who aren’t sailing a New Year’s cruise can also enjoy Carnival fun from the iconic Times Square New Year’s Rockin’ Eve broadcast.

Carnival Cruise Line Sponsoring Times Square Party

Millions of people will be able to enjoy Carnival Cruise Line’s special party style with New Year’s Eve festivities from Times Square in New York City as 2023 ends and 2024 begins. This year, America’s Cruise Line is not only lighting the iconic ball, but is the official cruise line sponsor for Times Square New Year’s Eve for the third year in a row.

Furthermore, Carnival is a musical sponsor for the ever-popular “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2024” on ABC, a live broadcast of the festivities that will start at 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 31, 2023 and continue into 2024 until 2 a.m. iHeartRadio stations and the iHeartRadio app will also broadcast the celebration.

“We’re bringing the signature Carnival fun back to Times Square in celebration of our remarkable achievements this year,” said Josh Weinstein, President & CEO and Chief Climate Officer of Carnival Corporation & plc.

“Looking back on 2023, we delivered stellar vacations to millions of people and saw record bookings and unprecedented growth from several of our brands, including Carnival Cruise Line. We have raised the bar, so now it’s time to raise the Ball! We have plenty to be proud about and we’re confident that 2024 is set to be another record-breaking year across our company.”

While the ball has already been tested to be sure it functions properly, the official lighting for this year’s party will be at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, when the ball will be raised to the top of One Times Square for all to see.

The iconic New Year’s Eve Ball is a geodesic sphere 12 feet in diameter, weighs 11,875 pounds, and is covered with 2,688 triangular crystals. A total of 32,256 LEDS illuminate the ball.

For more than 30 years, the ABC special has been the top viewing choice for New Year’s Eve celebrations, with more than 17.9 million viewers at the peak moment when midnight is reached.

During the celebration, several LED billboards in Times Square will also display Carnival Cruise Line’s new “No One Does Fun Like Carnival” advertising campaign.

New Year’s Eve at Sea

While the Times Square New Year’s Eve party is well-known worldwide, it is at sea that end-of-year parties are truly global. Carnival Cruise Line’s 26 ships will all be holding their own celebrations to ring in the new year, at destinations around the world.

Carnival Luminosa and Carnival Splendor are sailing in Australia and will be the first ships to ring in the new year, while the new Carnival Jubilee will be enjoying her second-ever sailing from Galveston for the new year festivities. From New York to New Orleans and Baltimore to Mobile to all the Florida homeports, Carnival ships are ready to sail into 2024.

Onboard celebrations will include deck parties, countdowns, balloon drops, champagne toasts, and more, including the New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner with special treats as well as themed activities throughout New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

All of these festivities are to ring in the new year with Carnival’s signature fun, leading to what should be a fantastic 2024 for the cruise line.

“We start off 2024 with gratitude for our great guests, team members, travel advisors and business partners who have helped make our brand such a success and position us for a great year ahead,” said Christine Duffy, Carnival Cruise Line President.

“Now, as we ring in 2024, we’re also set to share more plans for our new exclusive destination, Celebration Key, which opens in 2025 and will truly be a game-changing addition to Carnival cruises.”

Another thing to look forward to with Carnival Cruise Line in 2024 will be the addition of Carnival Firenze to the fleet in late April, sailing from the West Coast and bringing a distinctive Italian flair to new Carnival itineraries.

Carnival Ready to Celebrate in 2024 With New Deck Parties

Carnival Cruise Line has released the updated list of onboard parties for every vessel in the fleet, including exclusive parties for the new Carnival Jubilee – just in time to ring in the new year.

From popular favorite events to exclusive events for some ships and special Carnival Journeys voyages, there are fun parties awaiting every guest who sets sail with Carnival in the coming months.

Carnival Cruise Line Updated 2024 Theme Party List

Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald has released the updated list of themed parties for every Carnival cruise ship. These parties are a highlight of each sailing for many cruisers, who may choose what to pack based on what outfits match the different parties onboard.

It should be noted that outdoor deck parties may change due to weather, if conditions will not permit the event to be held on the Lido Deck as planned. This could be due to high winds or rain that might endanger sound equipment or make the surface unsafe for guests to get their groove on.

“Take a look at what our brilliant stable of Cruise Directors and their Fun Squads will be hosting for you when you cruise,” said Heald.

The themed parties for every Carnival ship are the following:

Enjoying Onboard Parties

The onboard parties are a highlight of any cruise and a fun way for guests to enjoy music, dancing, and more. Depending on the type of party, some events are held on the Lido Deck, while others are hosted in the ship’s main atrium, where guests can join in from different decks with great views. Other events may be held in the onboard nightclub or other spaces as necessary.

Different cruise directors also add their own flair to each party, whether through crowd interaction, music trivia, flashy costumes, prizes tossed to the crowd, and more. Line dances or dance-offs can be part of different events, or there may be costume contests, singing challenges, or other competitions.

Many guests will specifically pack items to coordinate with the theme parties, such as an all white outfit for the Silent White Party, or day-glo gear for the Rock and Glow events. This is not necessary, however, and everyone is welcome to enjoy each party in their own way.

Each cruise will have several parties onboard, but passengers should check the Fun Times (either through the Carnival Hub App or the printed version available from Guest Services) for the days and times of each event. These special-themed parties are only offered one time per sailing.

Some parties are also limited-time events and may not be offered on future sailings once ships change sailing regions or itineraries. During the Alaska sailing season, for example, ships in the Last Frontier will often offer themed Alaska parties, but may drop other parties to accommodate the exclusive event.

Which theme party is your favorite? (I enjoy the Mega Deck Party and all the fun line dances, myself!) Share your onboard party tips on the Cruise Hive boards!

Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas Voted Best Cruise Ship of 2023

After two straight years of being a runner-up, Royal Caribbean International has the top-ranked cruise ship in the 2023 Cruise Hive Awards. Wonder of the Seas took top honors in the annual contest.

Wonder of the Seas Tops for Best Overall Cruise Ship

Wonder of the Seas came out on top among ships across multiple cruise lines nominated by readers in 2023 for the Cruise Hive Awards. Royal Caribbean International came in second place for the honor in 2021 and 2022.

Royal Caribbean also scored first place for most anticipated cruise ship for 2024 – Icon of the Seas. The ship is scheduled to make her inaugural cruise on Saturday, January 27, 2024.

Best Overall Cruise Ship
Best Overall Cruise Ship

The Cruise Hive Awards started as an annual feature in 2014, though the Best Overall Cruise Ship category began in 2021. Voting opened on October 1, 2023, and closed on Friday, December 22, with Cruise Hive readers casting a single vote in each of the eight categories. Check the results for all other categories here.

Wonder of the Seas currently is homeported in Florida’s Port Canaveral, where it’s sailing 7-night itineraries to the Eastern and Western Caribbean with a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay, the cruise line’s private island.

The Oasis-class ship, which was the world’s largest cruise ship when she made her maiden voyage on March 4, 2022, is 236,857 gross tons and has a maximum occupancy of nearly 7,000 guests.

Among its features are FlowRider, a 30,000-gallon surf simulator, and the AquaTheater, the deepest pool at sea with 30-foot diving platforms that serve as a set for mesmerizing water shows.

Nearly a dozen specialty dining venues await guests, including The Mason Jar Southern Restaurant & Bar, which debuted on Wonder of the Seas. The rustic-designed eatery offers a southern-accented menu with items such as johnnycakes, crab beignets, and fried green tomatoes. For guests looking for a little more zing, more than a dozen American whiskeys are offered.

Wonder of the Seas is organized into eight signature neighborhoods. On deck, guests can enjoy ample attractions, including zip lines, mini golf, and Ultimate Abyss, a twisting slide that travels down 10 stories over the ship’s stern.

Construction of the ship – the fifth of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class of vessels – began at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, in May 2019. Its original delivery date of 2021 was ultimately pushed until 2022 due to the COVID pandemic.

Carnival’s Celebration and Mardi Gras Among Top 3 Ships

Wonder of the Seas landed in first place in the Cruise Hive Awards by a handful of votes over Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Celebration, which is homeported at PortMiami where it also offers 7-night itineraries to the Eastern and Western Caribbean. Carnival Celebration made its maiden voyage in 2022.

Royal Caribbean International came in second place for the honor in 2021 with Symphony of the Seas and again in 2022 with Wonder of the Seas.

Carnival’s Mardi Gras, which won the title for best overall cruise ship in 2022 and 2021, came in third place for 2023. Mardi Gras, like Wonder of the Seas, is homeported at Port Canaveral and likewise sails on 7-night Eastern and Western voyages.

Other ships finishing in the top six for 2023 were Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Beyond (fourth place), Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas (fifth place), and Disney Cruise Line’s Fantasy (sixth place).

In 2022, Carnival’s Mardi Gas was tops, followed by Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, and Celebrity Cruise’s Celebrity Solstice. In 2021, Mardi Gras was followed by Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas and Carnival Horizon.

The annual Cruise Hive Awards were created in 2014 to offer insights from real cruise fans on different cruise lines and experiences to help others better plan cruise vacations.

Cruise Ship Guests Spot Fishermen Stranded in the Sea

Guests sailing aboard a Costa Cruises’ ship in the Arabian Sea are credited with helping to rescue five fishermen stranded in the sea near the vessel’s location. The incident, which happened on Christmas Day, December 25, 2023, took place between Mumbai and Kochi, India.

Shipwreck Victims Spotted From a Balcony

The view from a ship’s balcony usually provides a calming ocean scene, perhaps with a pretty coastline in the distance or some seabirds soaring nearby, but on Christmas Day 2023, guests aboard Costa Cruises’ Costa Serena spotted something unusual: A group of people stranded in the water wearing life vests.

The guests immediately alerted crew members, and the ship’s Captain, Andrea Bardi, altered the ship’s route in the direction of the stranded group. It was roughly one mile from the ship’s location where five fishermen were located bobbing in the water, the victims of an apparent shipwreck off India’s southwest coast.

Costa Serena’s crew assisted the fishermen aboard the ship, while officials contacted the Indian Coast Guard, which arrived on the scene a few hours later. The rescued men were transferred to a coast guard ship and ultimately brought to a hospital in Mumbai. All were reported to be in good health.

On December 26, 2023, Indian Coast Guard officials visited Costa Serena while she was docked in Kochi, India, and delivered a plaque to the ship’s captain and crew in appreciation of their efforts to rescue the fishermen.

Costa Serena, a Concordia-class ship that entered service in 2007, is seasonally home-ported in Mumbai and operating a series of 23 2- to 5-day cruises to Kochi, Goa, and the Lakshadweep Islands. The 3,780-guest ship began her winter series on November 3, 2023 and will sail the route until January 11, 2024.

At the time of the rescue, Costa Serena was operating a 5-night sailing roundtrip from Mumbai, with calls at Kochi and Bangaram, India. The sailing will conclude on December 29, 2023, and embark that day on a 3-night New Year cruise, with one port call at Goa, India.

No Shortage of Rescues Around the Globe

Cruise ships are obligated to safeguard all life at sea and offer assistance to anyone who may be in distress, whether they are commercial fishermen, cargo vessels, pleasure craft, ferry boats, or even makeshift refugee boats.

Rescues by cruise ships in locations around the globe are not uncommon, and appear to be happening with increasing frequency.

A recent incident happened near the Dominican Republic on December 13, 2023, when Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Vista rescued six men whose cargo vessel had capsized. The victims were located on a life raft and rescued by the ship’s crew.

Carnival Dream Rescue

Additional victims were reported missing, and the US Coast Guard arrived on the scene to take over search and rescue efforts, allowing Carnival Vista to continue on her itinerary.

Carnival Vista was operating a 6-night Eastern Caribbean cruise from Port Canaveral, Florida, and rescued the group as she sailed from Nassau, Bahamas, to Amber Cove, Dominican Republic.

The Costa Serena rescue wasn’t the first one involving fishermen. In November 2023, an MSC Cruises’ ship helped to rescue six fishermen from a sinking boat near Brazil’s Ilha Grande Bay.

MSC Preziosa, a Fantasia-class ship operating a 3-night cruise roundtrip from Sao Paolo, received an SOS call from the disabled ship. The cruise ship crew rescued the men, who had embarked on a deep-sea fishing trip and encountered a storm at sea.

Six fishermen were treated by the ship’s medical personnel and transported to a nearby town, while one of the group died and was later recovered.

Icon of the Seas Voted Most Anticipated New Cruise Ship of 2024

It is no surprise that what will be the biggest, most innovative cruise ship history has ever seen has been voted as the most anticipated new ship coming in 2024.

Royal Caribbean International’s upcoming Icon of the Seas – already en route to Miami, Florida for her January debut – has taken the honors in the Cruise Hive Awards.

Most Anticipated New Cruise Ship for 2024 – Icon of the Seas

Cruise Hive’s readers have spoken and 47.23% of voters selected Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas as the most anticipated new ship of 2024. Tremendous buzz has surrounded the immense ship since her first steel was cut in June 2021, with teaser videos and behind-the-scenes looks at the new features and amenities the vessel will offer.

Yet other upcoming ships also fared well with great anticipation in the new year. Princess Cruises’ Sun Princess came in second with 13.93% of the votes, followed closely by the final Oasis-class vessel for Royal Caribbean, Utopia of the Seas, with 13.07% of the votes.

Disney Cruise Line’s new Disney Treasure, sister ship to the popular Disney Wish, is another top choice with 11.16% of the vote.

Most Anticipated New Cruise Ship
Most Anticipated New Cruise Ship

Cunard Line’s Queen Anne garnered 5.92% of the vote as the most anticipated new ship, with Viking Vela from Viking Cruises gaining 4.20%. Explora II from Explora Journeys came in with 2.86%, followed by Silversea Cruises’ Silver Ray with 1.43% of the vote. Together, TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 7 and Mein Schiff 8 rounded out the voting with just .19% of the vote.

It is no surprise that the smaller, niche cruise lines – luxury cruises and expedition cruises – did not have as many votes, as fewer travelers have experience with those lines. All the new ships, however, are sure to offer amazing experiences to every guest who sets sail.

Most Anticipated New Cruise Ship of 2024
Most Anticipated New Cruise Ship of 2024

It should also be noted that Norwegian Cruise Line has no upcoming ships set to launch in 2024, as the new Norwegian Aqua will be setting sail in 2025. Similarly, Carnival Cruise Line does not have any new build ships on order for 2024. The upcoming Carnival Firenze, which will debut in April 2024, is not considered a “new” ship, though she will undergo extensive refurbishment before joining the Carnival fleet.

When Will Icon of the Seas Set Sail?

Cruise fans will not have long to wait for Icon of the Seas in 2024, as the ship is already sailing for Miami, Florida and is currently in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on her way to her new homeport. Before she arrives, however, she will have a resupply stop in Puerto Rico, taking on additional fuel and final crew members before she arrives in the Sunshine State.

The exact date when Icon of the Seas will sail into PortMiami for the first time has not yet been announced, but is sure to be a grand occasion with great fanfare to greet the new ship.

The first guests will board Icon of the Seas for her inaugural cruise on Saturday, January 27, 2024. That first voyage is a 7-night Eastern Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise, with visits to St. Kitts, St. Thomas, and Perfect Day at CocoCay. The new ship will be alternating Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Miami year-round at least through April 2026.

Why Icon of the Seas Took the Title

Why is Icon of the Seas the most anticipated ship of 2024? It could be her impressive size at 250,800-gross-tons, or her amazing capacity of 5,610 passengers at double occupancy and up to 7,600 travelers when fully booked.

It could also be the ship’s engineering marvels, such as the largest waterpark at sea with Thrill Island, the amazing structural support provided by the unique Pearl, or the phenomenal transformational space of the AquaDome.

The ship’s family-oriented atmosphere, with the Surfside neighborhood and a range of venues and features dedicated to young families, are also appealing not only to family cruisers, but to multi-generational families who want to enjoy a cruise vacation together. Icon of the Seas truly has something for everyone.

MSC Cruises Kicks Off Wave Season With New Year’s Sale

Christmas might be over, but the holiday savings haven’t wrapped up just yet. MSC Cruises is celebrating New Year’s and the beginning of Wave Season with discounted sailings to the Caribbean and North America, the Mediterranean, and Northern Europe.

MSC Cruises Announces New Year’s Sale for US-Based Sailings

Now through January 15, 2024, MSC Cruises is offering discounted cruises in honor of New Year’s and the beginning of Wave Season, with many round trip sailings embarking from Florida.

The cruise line is offering sailings starting at $279 (USD) that include an Easy Drink package, free Wi-Fi for up to two devices per stateroom, and up to $400 (USD) in onboard credit. During the sale, kids are also invited to sail with their parents or guardians for free. The savings can be used on cruises departing now through the end of the winter 2024-2025 season.

Notably, MSC Cruises is offering more sailings from the US than ever before. All five MSC ships sailing from US ports – MSC Seashore, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Seascape, MSC Magnifica, and MSC Divina – will be included in the savings.

“This year, MSC Cruises has more ships and itineraries sailing from ports in the U.S. than ever before. This Wave Season deal is our way of inviting travelers to try our amazing, innovative ships and enjoy the unique and memorable experience MSC Cruises has to offer, while giving loyal guests a fantastic way to save on their next cruise,” says Suzanne Salas, SVP, Marketing & E-Commerce, MSC Cruises USA.

Cruising is already a huge value compared to land-based vacations and with value-adds like an all-inclusive drink package, Wi-Fi, kids sailing free and a credit to use on board, the savings are even greater,” adds Salas.

MSC Seascape will be taking guests on seven-night Eastern Caribbean sailings embarking from Miami, Florida. The voyages will include port calls at Nassau; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island in the Bahamas.

MSC Divina will be embarking on three-night sailings to the Bahamas from Miami, also visiting Nassau and Ocean Cay.

MSC Seashore will embark on 10-night Western Caribbean Cruises from Port Canaveral in Florida, sailing to Nassau, Costa Maya, Mexico; Cozumel, Mexico; and will spend two days at Ocean Cay.

MSC Magnifica will be sailing from Miami on three and four-night cruises to the Bahamas and Key West, before moving to the Mediterranean toward the end of 2024.

MSC Meraviglia offers various itineraries, ranging from six to 14 nights, including round-trip sailings from New York to destinations like Bermuda, Canada, New England, and the Bahamas.

In addition to the US based-sailings, the savings also apply to Northern European itineraries to visit destinations like Provence, France; La Havre (Paris), France; Hamburg, Germany; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Bruges, Belgium; Portofino, Italy; Naples, Italy, Taormina, Italy; La Valletta, Malta; and Barcelona, Spain.

What is Wave Season?

Wave Season takes place during the first quarter of the year (typically January through March), and is when cruise lines usually offer their best deals of the year. It’s essentially like Black Friday for cruise lines, but it takes place over a few months instead of one day.

Historically, the beginning of the year is a popular time for booking vacations to take later on in the year, such as during summer break. So, cruise lines roll out the red carpet to try to secure as many bookings as possible while demand is higher.

While deals vary based on the cruise line and ships, deals frequently include some combination of discounted sailings, onboard cruise credits or bonuses, and/or free excursions.

Princess Cruises Guests Reminded of Visa Paperwork Needs

Guests onboard the current sailing of Princess Cruises’ Diamond Princess are about to visit some very amazing ports of call in Vietnam, but need to be sure they’ve completed the appropriate paperwork to do so.

Letters have been delivered to passengers’ staterooms with information about necessary paperwork to ensure smooth visits to two outstanding ports – Chan May and Phu My.

Special Paperwork Needed for Vietnam Visits

Diamond Princess is currently sailing a 10-night Thailand & Vietnam cruise roundtrip from Singapore, with calls in Chan May (Da Nang) and Ho Chi Minh City (Phu My). Before guests can explore these intriguing ports, however, they need to have the appropriate paperwork ready for officials.

The Guest Services team aboard Diamond Princess is informing all guests of the necessary steps in order to make the process as easy and convenient as possible.

“In preparation for our arrival into Vietnam, [we] would like to take this opportunity to provide you some important information regarding our upcoming Vietnamese port of calls procedures,” a letter delivered to guests’ staterooms read.

The letter details that all passengers are required to have a Vietnamese Landing Card – provided to each guest – that should be carried ashore. Immigration officials at the gangway will verify and stamp the Landing Cards, which are valid until after the visit to Phu My on Sunday, December 31, 2023.

Landing Cards must be deposited in the designated drop boxes at the ship’s gangways when guests return to the ship after visiting Phu My.

Furthermore, guests must have Vietnamese visas to disembark in one (or both) of the Vietnamese ports. While travelers could have purchased the visas prior to sailing, they are also available for purchase onboard if necessary. Even if guests do not plan to disembark in the ports, all guests onboard are required to have appropriate visas.

Diamond Princess
Diamond Princess

Guests who already have valid Vietnamese visas, who hold a passport from a visa-exempt country, or hold a Certificate of Vietnamese Visa exemption booklet, will still be charged $3 per person for landing cards and the associated processing fees.

Visa fees and landing card fees can all be charged to guests’ onboard accounts.

It should be noted that the United States is not a visa-exempt country for visits to Vietnam, though several European nations, including the UK (except British National Overseas passport holders), are. Japan and a number of other Asian nations, including the Philippines, are also visa-exempt. A total of 26 countries are visa-exempt at this time, though that list can be updated at any time.

Exploring Asia Aboard Diamond Princess

Diamond Princess is currently homeported from Singapore, offering lengthy sailings visiting Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Depending on the sailing date and itinerary length, ports of call include Saigon, Bangkok, Phuket, Nha Trang, and more amazing destinations that will give travelers a diverse and intimate experience in such an exotic region.

Diamond Princess in Japan
Diamond Princess in Japan

In mid-March 2024, Diamond Princess will offer a one-way sailing from Singapore to Yokohama, a 23-night journey visiting top destinations in Vietnam, China, Korea, and Japan along the way.

The ship will then remain homeported from Yokohama offering Japanese sailings through August 2024, at which time she will reposition to Australia for the southern summer season. In March 2025, Diamond Princess will return to Yokohama and resume her Asian explorations at least through August 2025. Itineraries beyond that date have not yet been released.

The 115,875-gross-ton Diamond Princess is a modified Grand-class vessel built in Japan, making her uniquely suited for Asian sailings with respect to safety and environmental features. The ship can welcome 2,670 passengers when booked at double occupancy, and is also home to 1,100 international crew members.

Florida’s Port Canaveral has been named the Best US Homeport for 2023 in the annual Cruise Hive Awards. It’s the fourth consecutive year the port has won the honor.

Port Canaveral Retains Crown as Top Homeport in United States

Located on the state’s east coast, Port Canaveral earned 34% of the vote, more than twice the votes of second-place finisher PortMiami. Nearly 20 ports in total competed for the annual honor.

The Cruise Hive Awards have been an annual feature since 2014. Voting opened on October 1, 2023, and closed on Friday, December 22. Cruise Hive readers could each cast one vote in each of the eight categories. Check the results so far right here.

The Cruise Hive Awards make the second milestone for Port Canaveral in 2023. In February 2023, the Florida Ports Council announced that the port – east of Orlando on the state’s Atlantic coast – had 4.07 million multi-day passengers in 2022. That topped Miami’s total of 4.02 million, making Port Canaveral the world’s busiest cruise port for 2022. That designation was reversed this December when PortMiami regained the title for 2023.

Port Canaveral is home to many of the industry’s top cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, and Royal Caribbean International. It offers easy access to more than 50 destinations, including the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Eastern and Western Mexico.

Guests traveling through the port laud its short transfer time from Orlando International Airport and the parking availability. Its proximity to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios Florida, and SeaWorld Orlando makes it a convenient port for family vacationers.

PortMiami and Port Everglades Finish in Top 3 for Best US Homeport

Finishing second in the Cruise Hive Awards for Best US Homeport in 2023 was PortMiami with 16% of the vote. Its location on the southern tip of Florida makes it a popular spot to begin cruises to the Eastern, Western, and Southern Caribbean, hence its nickname the “Cruise Capital of the World.”

In third place with 14% of the votes was Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, giving Florida ports the top three spots on the Cruise Hive list. Port Everglades is home to various cruise lines, including Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises, and Royal Caribbean.

PortMiami and Port Everglades also finished in second and third place, respectively, in the three previous years.

Port of Galveston in Texas finished in fourth place in 2023 with 8% of the vote. Positioned on the Gulf of Mexico, the port recently invested $250 million in improvements to accommodate Carnival’s newest ship, Carnival Jubilee. The ship began its sailings from the port beginning December 23, 2023, and is scheduled to remain home-ported in Galveston until at least April 2026.

Port Tampa Bay was voted into fifth place with 3% of the reader vote, followed by Port of San Diego (3%), Port of New Orleans (3%), Port of Baltimore (3%), Bayonne in New Jersey (2%), Port of Seattle (2%), and Manhattan Cruise Terminal in New York (2%).

Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles in California, Port of Charleston in South Carolina, Port of Boston, Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, JAXPORT in Florida, and Port of Mobile in Alabama also received votes but garnered less than 2% of the overall total.

Port Canaveral Projects More Growth in 2024

Located 45 miles east of Orlando, Port Canaveral initially opened in 1953 and primarily served Florida’s commercial fishing industry. In the 1960s, it took on an important role in America’s space program as the homeport for the nearby Kennedy Space Center.

In 1982, Port Canaveral opened its first dedicated cruise terminal. Carnival Cruise Line homeported its first ship there in 1990, followed by Disney Cruise Line in 1998, and Royal Caribbean in 2000.

We’re very excited for the future,” said Capt. John Murray, Port Canaveral CEO, at November 2023’s State of the Port address. “We have some great assets coming online in the next few years and a lot of surprises for the business as a whole.

For 2024, officials at Port Canaveral project its terminals will homeport 13 cruise ships, host 7.3 million passengers and expect 913 ship calls.
