Key Aspects:
- Carnival lets cruisers visit two Bahamian private destinations: RelaxAway Half Moon Cay and Celebration Key.
- RelaxAway Half Moon Cay is geared toward low-key, relaxing days in port.
- Celebration Key feels more like a private resort.
Carnival Cruise Line has two different private destinations within the Bahamas that cruisers can enjoy during a Caribbean itinerary: RelaxAway Half Moon Cay and Celebration Key. RelaxAway is a private island on Little San Salvador that has recently undergone a major expansion, while Celebration Key was a purpose-built destination on Grand Bahama.
There are a few key differences between the two: how you get ashore, the overall experience, activities, dining, excursions, and overall scale.
One isn’t necessarily better than the other, but which will be best for you will depend on your expectations and preferred port day experiences.
Let’s take a look at what you can expect, so you can pick the best Carnival Cruise Line itinerary for your needs.

Getting to RelaxAway Half Moon Cay vs Celebration Key
Both of these destinations show up on Carnival Cruise Line Caribbean itineraries.
In the past, it was notable that you would have to tender at RelaxAway Half Moon Cay. While some cruisers are fine with this fact, other cruisers will avoid destinations where you have to tender, just due to the inconvenience.
Well, now, that’s no longer a worry.
Thanks to the new addition of a large pier, cruise line ships can dock, including the larger Carnival ships, with no worries, at RelaxAway Half Moon Cay. It makes the entire experience for cruisers easier, faster and more enjoyable. And to make things even easier beyond that, the island has its own tram service that’s new as well, allowing for more convenient access to the entire private island.

In contrast, Celebration Key isn’t on its own island and is on Grand Bahama. It has a pier that originally opened in 2025, but that pier expanded further in 2026, so four ships can now hang out here all at the same time.
Basically, this all means that you can easily get to either of these two private destinations quickly and conveniently now, thanks to recent improvements.
However, Celebration Key is purpose-built to handle more passengers at one time, which means you are likely to run into more people here than you would at RelaxAway Half Moon Cay.
Biggest Difference

Having visited both of these destinations, I find that the biggest overall difference is just the vibe.
RelaxAway Half Moon Cay is all about the natural setting and beach. You have the white sands and waters. There are plenty of amenities and your every need is taken care of, but, while you’re here, you really just want to enjoy being out on the beach.
In contrast, Celebration Key feels a little more built up. That’s certainly not a bad thing, but is something to consider. It feels more resort-y, if that makes sense. While you can definitely enjoy being on the beach and in the lagoon, your attention is definitely drawn away to all the other attractions that exist here.
Activities

Both RelaxAway Half Moon Cay and Celebration Key offer plenty to do. I was not bored for a single second in either destination.
At RelaxAway Half Moon Cay, you can enjoy a variety of water activities, from swimming to snorkeling to paddling. You can go on various tours (bike tours, horseback riding tours, etc.). You can just chill out in your cabana if you want to.
At Celebration Key, the offerings are a little more robust, because in addition to doing all these typical “beach” activities, you also have waterslides, sports courts and resort-style amenities like swim-up bars.
Which is Better for Families

Again, this is all just going to depend on your family. What might’ve been best for my needs and fellow travelers may not exactly be ideal for your crew. Neither is going to be necessarily bad for traveling families, though.
RelaxAway is going to offer up a more classic beach experience, but then Celebration Key is going to offer a little more in the way of kid-focused fun. There’s the Starfish Lagoon and Guppy Grotto splash pad, for families specifically. There are sports courts.
As such, if you do want a family-friendly typical beach day, that’s relaxing and enjoyable for everyone, RelaxAway definitely delivers. Celebration Key, though, is going to keep everyone entertained every second of your day.
Adults-Only Spaces

Not everyone is traveling with a kiddo in tow, and I appreciate it when cruise lines offer adults-only amenities alongside their family-friendly programming.
At RelaxAway, unfortunately, there are no dedicated adults-only areas. That doesn’t mean that adults can’t enjoy RelaxAway Half Moon Cay. It definitely has a more low-key vibe than Celebration Key so it’s good for, as the name implies, relaxing — but you’re not going to find a space just set up for the adults alone.
At Celebration Key, there’s the Pearl Cove Beach Club, though, which is an adults-only space with its own beach, pool, dining and drinks.
Dining

When you’re on one of these private cruise line islands, make sure you have somewhere to eat, especially if you plan to spend as much time as possible off the ship.
On RelaxAway Half Moon Cay, you can enjoy a complimentary buffet, as well as other venues that were either added or upgraded in this year’s expansion. Options include the Orchid Beach Grill, Hibiscus Beach Grill, Luna Tide Beach Bar, Stay Awhile Beach Shack and Lil’ Tiki Bar.
On Celebration Key, there are literally 30-plus dining and drinking options. Island Eats rules apply, though. This means that cruisers get one complimentary meal at fast-casual eateries, and then 40% off entrees at select full-service restaurants.
So, yes, you can get a free meal no matter of which of the two destinations you’re visiting, but the overall offerings will differ in terms of scope.
Excursions

Excursions are one of the big things that cruisers expect when docking at any destination, so what can you expect at RelaxAway vs Celebration Key, if you want to do more than just lie on the sands all day?
RelaxAway, given its lower-key vibe, does focus more on nature and water. Take a horseback tour, go snorkeling, see the stingrays, grab a bike and cycle around.
Celebration Key’s excursions, meanwhile, are a little more robust, given that the destination is located on Grand Bahama, giving cruisers access to activities beyond just Carnival Cruise Line’s little circle of influence. You can go out beyond the resort-style setting to see what’s offered throughout the rest of the island.
All that said, there’s really no need to book an excursion to have a great time. I didn’t and still enjoyed every second in both destinations.
Crowds

As already mentioned, Celebration Key is designed to hold a large number of cruisers at once. Its infrastructure is built up to offer a resort-style setting. As such, crowds are more likely to be found here. There is also a free shuttle where you can hop on and off at multiple stops.
Then, again, RelaxAway is less busy and people are more spread out. You’re not going to notice crowds as much due to the overall setup. The cruise line also offers a free shuttle tram you can get on from the pier that has multiple stops.
So, if you’re a cruiser who avoids crowds at all costs, you may find RelaxAway to be a little more to your liking.
Upgrades

Cruise lines are always making their offerings bigger and better for travelers, and this mission doesn’t just stop with the ships.
Half Moon Cay has undergone significant upgrades as of 2026. In the summer, the 1,005-foot pier opened, allowing for larger ships to dock and removing the need for tendering. Tram service was added to the island. New food pavilions and bars were also added to the experience. A new beach club is expected to arrive in fall 2026.
Celebration Key already had two berths, but in the summer of 2026, it added another two as part of a $100 million pier expansion. This allows for bigger ships to dock simultaneously and ups the destination’s daily capacity to more than 13,000 guests. It’s expected that the destination will welcome up to 4 million visitors each year by 2028.
More expansions for Celebration Key are expected in the years ahead.
Which Do You Pick?

So, if you’re still wondering if you should pick RelaxAway Half Moon Cay or Celebration Key, how do you come down on a firm decision as you’re booking your next Carnival Cruise Line Caribbean cruise?
I’d recommend that you ask yourself what it is that you truly want.
More From Cruise Hive
For a lower-key, beach-focused day, go for RelaxAway Half Moon Cay. After all, it’s in the name: relax. That’s what you’re going to be able to do here, and you do, of course, have amenities and excursions if you need something to add a little bit more to your day.
If, however, you want a lot more in terms of amenities, and enjoy a resort-style setting with ample opportunity to go-go-go, somewhere that everyone is going to stay entertained the entire day … well, Celebration Key is your place to go.
