Major Royal Caribbean Change With Leadership at Celebrity Cruises

A high-level change at the helm of Celebrity Cruises will see the cruise line’s current president and CEO transition to a corporate position while an executive vice president steps up to the top job at the brand.

Cruise line parent company Royal Caribbean Group on April 6 detailed new roles for Lisa Lutoff-Perlo and Laura Hodges Bethge.

Laura Hodges Bethge Is Named President, CEO

Royal Caribbean Group, parent of the Celebrity Cruises brand, announced that the line’s president and CEO, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, will become the group’s corporate vice chair of external affairs effective on May 1.

At the same time, Laura Hodges Bethge, currently Celebrity Cruises’ executive vice president, shared services operations, will be named president of the line.

Hodges Bethge joined the company 23 years ago and has held senior positions in product development, hotel and marine operations, sales, marketing, product innovation, market development and investor relations.

She played leadership roles in conceptualizing new ships and private island destinations, including Royal Caribbean Group’s Perfect Day at CocoCay experience.

Hodges Bethge said, “Now 15 ships strong, this is an exciting time for Celebrity Cruises. This year alone, we’ll be welcoming Celebrity Ascent, and reaching key construction milestones in the yet-to-be-named fifth ship in the revolutionary Edge Series. I look forward to building on the incredible achievements of Lisa and this world-class team, as we continue to break boundaries and chart new courses in the industry.”

Outgoing President Known as Trailblazer

Lutoff-Perlo has served as president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises since 2014, overseeing the launch of three Edge-class ships, two expedition vessels and a major fleet-wide revitalization project.

She joined the Royal Caribbean Group as a district sales manager in 1985 and rose to executive-level positions, including senior vice president of hotel operations and executive vice president of operations for Royal Caribbean International.

Widely considered a trailblazer in the cruise industry, Lutoff-Perlo was the first cruise executive to name a female captain of a cruise ship when she appointed Kate McCue to Celebrity Summit in 2015.

Lutoff-Perlo also presided over Celebrity Cruises as it won a major recognition early this year from the prestigious Forbes Travel Guide, which named five Celebrity Cruises’ ships to its Forbes Star Awards list.

Royal Caribbean Group President and CEO Jason Liberty said, “Lisa has been instrumental in transforming the Celebrity Cruises brand to what it is today. From helping us introduce the revolutionary Edge Series of ships to advancing the role of women in maritime careers, Lisa has had an incredible career during her time leading Celebrity Cruises, and multiple parts of our Royal Caribbean International brand.”

Liberty also congratulated Hodges Bethge: “With her operational experience, business acumen and deep understanding of our company and the cruise industry, I know Laura is the right person to lead Celebrity Cruises to its next phases of growth.”

Celebrity Ascent to Debut in Late 2023

The new Celebrity Cruises’ president will preside over the launch of the line’s newest ship, the 3,260-guest Celebrity Ascent, under construction at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in France and slated to launch in late 2023.

The fourth in the line’s Edge Series, Celebrity Ascent reached a major construction milestone in January 2023 when she was floated out of the shipyard. Work on the 140,600 gross ton vessel continues at her mooring location, prior to sea trials later this year.

Her maiden voyage is slated for December 3, 2023, from Port Everglades. The 7-night Western Caribbean cruise will call at St. Maarten, St. Thomas and Puerto Plata. Alternating Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises will follow the inaugural voyage.

Celebrity Ascent will also sail two preview cruises before the official maiden voyage. The first is a 4-night Western Caribbean cruise departing November 22, 2023, giving cruisers a Thanksgiving week getaway. The ship will call at Cozumel. The second preview sailing is a 3-night Bahamas cruise departing November 26, 2023, and calling at Nassau, Bahamas.

MSC Cruises’ New Ship to Tempt Wine, Food Lovers

MSC Cruises is beckoning wine and cuisine aficionados with new specialty dining options set to debut aboard the MSC Euribia when the ship enters service in June 2023. International flavors and immersive restaurant experiences await cruisers sailing on the 6,334-guest vessel.

Wine Bar, French Brasserie Debut on MSC Euribia

MSC Cruises’ newest ship, the Meraviglia-class MSC Euribia now under construction at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in France, will feature five specialty restaurants when she launches in June. The cruise line on April 6 revealed details about two of those dining options, the Helios Wine Bar and Le Grill.

Wine lovers who indulge at the Helios Wine Bar can enjoy the venue’s 96 featured wines while learning the history of the wine they’ve chosen, thanks to high-tech tables and digital coasters that will reveal a particular wine’s grape varieties, the regions it comes from and other interesting facts.

Food pairings will be offered, too, including a selection of cheeses, finger foods and nuts curated to enhance the chosen wine. The venue also will host master classes for guests who wish to learn more about wine.

Le Grill is a traditional French brasserie that will serve classic favorites and shared dishes, including oysters, caviar and lobster, beef and pasta selections, plus French onion soup, Dover sole Meunière and a range of fancy French desserts.

“We are always looking to anticipate the next big thing in food and beverage, and with MSC Euribia, we wanted to offer venues that are unlike anything we have ever done before,” said MSC Cruises Vice President of Food and Beverage Jacques Van Staden.

He added, “The same culinary quality and exceptional service that define our offering will remain at the heart of the experience but will be brought to new heights. We want to offer our guests something to talk about, something to marvel at and something to remember, long after their cruise has ended.”

Another specialty venue and a favorite across the MSC Cruises fleet, Kaito Teppanyaki & Sushi Bar will be featured on the line’s new flagship, dishing up the flavors of the Far East.

Chefs at the eatery’s teppanyaki grills will prepare dishes while guests watch. While Kaito is not a new venue, it is being enhanced onboard MSC Euribia with robatayaki, the popular Japanese barbecue cuisine.

Ship to Feature Five Main Dining Rooms

Along with her specialty restaurants, MSC Euribia will feature five main dining venues and 21 bars and lounges. The main dining rooms, all serving three meals a day and included in the cruise fare, are Colorado River, Green Orchid, Il Campo, Aurora Boreale and Aurora Borealis. Also covered in the fare is the ship’s 1,336-seat Marketplace buffet, which offers international cuisines.

Desserts will abound onboard MSC Euribia, with the Jean-Philippe Maury Chocolat & Café offering 40 types of chocolate goodies, and the Crêpes & Gelato venue tempting cruisers with 17 ice cream flavors and 10 signature crêpes.

Before or after enjoying the new ship’s dining options, cruisers will have a wide variety of entertainment spaces to check out. The cruise line in late March revealed that MSC Euribia will feature seven new theatrical productions, a reimagined Carousel Lounge, and one of the largest big band performances at sea.

MSC Cruises will officially name MSC Euribia on June 8, 2023, during a ceremony at Copenhagen Malmö Port. The ship, which will be the 22nd vessel in the MSC Cruises fleet, will spend her inaugural season in Northern Europe, sailing 7-night cruises from Kiel, Germany, and Copenhagen to the Norwegian Fjords, with calls at Geiranger, Ålesund, and Flaam.

Norwegian Testing Starlink for All Three Cruise Lines

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has announced a trial run for high-speed Starlink internet access onboard ships, and if successful, the company plans to roll out the service to all three of its cruise line brands: Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

The initial test of the high-speed, broadband internet service Starlink is being conducted aboard Norwegian Breakaway, one of the larger vessels in Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet. This will help improve internet speeds and reliability onboard the ship even while at sea, bringing guests a premium service.

“We are thrilled to offer Starlink on board our ships to improve internet connectivity at sea,” said Harry Sommer, president and CEO-elect of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

“This initiative is a testament to our continuous quest to find new and innovative ways to enhance the experience for both guests and crew while sailing on our award-winning brands.”

If successful, the improved internet service would permit guests and crew members alike better options for staying connected to family and friends, as well as to enjoy streaming services and online gaming if they prefer. At the moment, a slow rollout is tentatively planned.

The test period is essential to be sure the technology is as reliable as expected. “Ensuring that this technology meets our high standards of excellence for our guests is incredibly important to us, which is why we are introducing this cutting-edge technology across our fleet in a phased manner,” said Sommer.

“Once deployed, guests and crew will have a faster and more reliable method to stay connected with friends and family including by sharing in real-time the incredible memories they create while at sea.”

Starlink Coverage
Starlink Coverage

In addition to guest and crew usage, the enhanced high-speed service would also provide extra bandwidth to improve onboard services such as app usage, reservations systems, and daily schedule updates, as well as improve ship-to-shore connection for operational needs.

Starlink is the high-speed internet service offered by SpaceX, using low earth orbit (LEO) satellites to improve broadband internet connectivity around the world, particularly in remote and rural areas with less access to high-speed services.

To date, SpaceX has launched thousands of small but highly advanced satellites to create its ever-expanding “constellation” network for Starlink, and is able to frequently update its network with new launches of its Falcon 9 rockets.

Additional Ships to Be Equipped

If the test aboard the 145,655-gross-ton Norwegian Breakaway is a success, seven additional ships are planned to be outfitted with Starlink before the end of 2023.

Three of the ships are the newest additions to the NCLH fleets – the upcoming Vista for Oceania Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Viva, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur. The remaining four ships that will be the first outfitted with Starlink have not been announced.

In time and if successful, the company plans to roll out Starlink throughout all three fleets, a total of 32 ships – 19 for Norwegian Cruise Line, 7 for Oceania Cruises, and 6 for Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

More From Cruise Hive

The company is developing a timeline for the possible rollout across the three fleets, but no details about which ships would be first to use Starlink or when the service would be available are yet available.

Starlink on Other Cruise Lines

Several other cruise lines are already utilizing or planning to install Starlink access, including SeaDream Yacht Club, Hurtigruten, American Cruise Lines, and Windstar Cruises.

Other large cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International, have already announced their own plans to implement Starlink service on their combined fleets.

Royal Caribbean, for example, began testing Starlink aboard Freedom of the Seas in mid-2022, and is nearing completion of rolling out the service across its entire fleet. Carnival Cruise Line is also in the process of bringing Starlink aboard its fleet in 2023.

The cruise line has recently completed a searchable archival project of passenger manifests from 1900 to 1969, offering insights into some of the line’s earliest voyages.

Special heritage cruises throughout the year are also of special interest, highlighting 56 different ports of call and with special activities onboard each sailing.

With 150 years of cruising expertise and history to draw upon, Holland America Line is sure to have a spectacular year as it celebrates this very significant and unique milestone of serving cruise guests and exploring worldwide destinations.

Carnival Cruise Line Debunks Recent Concerns and Rumors

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald has responded to a range of wild rumors, questions, and concerns this week, addressing popular topics of concern to guests.

From tablecloths to toppings bars to loyalty gifts to ducks, Carnival Cruise Line remains responsive to guests concerns and ensuring everyone has a fun and enjoyable cruise.

Line Ambassador Addresses Rumors and Concerns

John Heald is the official “brand ambassador” for Carnival Cruise Line, and as such, he maintains a strong social media presence and regularly addresses guests’ questions and concerns.

At times, those concerns may seem silly, while other questions may be based on misinformation or asking about future options. What crazy topics has Heald addressed recently?

New Charges for the Guy’s Burgers Toppings Bar

Guy’s Burger Joint is one of the most popular eateries onboard Carnival ships, serving up fresh-grilled smash burgers and delicious fries. One of the biggest attractions of the burgers is the toppings bar, where guests can add onions, lettuce, tomatoes, condiments, and other deliciousness to truly make their burger unique.

A rash of comments to Heald have mentioned the toppings bar and the incessant rumor that Carnival Cruise Line will soon begin charging guests for access to customize their burger.

“As Jacinta [Heald’s assistant] and I have had to answer ‘this is not true’ countless times over the last few days I thought I would let everyone know. The toppings are at no charge,” Heald confirmed.

This rumor began as an April Fool’s post from another website, and quickly went viral as readers did not finish the article and see the “April Fools!” note at the end.

While the toppings bar does occasionally shift its offerings – bacon is not always available, for example, and lately there have been fewer mushrooms offered to smother one’s burger – it remains free and available for all Guy’s Burger Joint lovers to enjoy.

Lack of Tablecloths

Many cruise travelers love the elegance of the main dining room, and part of that elegance can be crisp linen tablecloths. Carnival Cruise Line, however, no longer uses tablecloths on all but one of its ships, and guests have noticed and wondered why.

Carnival Spirit does still use tablecloths, but the reason isn’t due to elegance, nor is Carnival Cruise Line working to have more casual dining room experiences by removing the linens – it’s just a matter of environmental sustainability.

“Carnival Spirit has them because the ship does not have the beautiful gloss finished tables that all the other ships have,” Heald explained. “The ship will, I am sure, eventually have these tables added.”

Likely, this change may be made during a future drydock or renovation, when there is time available to change out the hundreds of tables in Carnival Spirit‘s Empire restaurant, the two-story main dining room.

“Tablecloths will not be returning,” Heald confirmed for the rest of the fleet. “The cost to the environment of having to wash thousands of them each week is not something we will return to doing.”

VIFP Gift Delivery

With new VIFP gifts being offered to loyal cruisers in the coming weeks, some guests have asked about whether or not gifts will be hand-delivered to individual staterooms, as was done before protocols were implemented during the industry-wide shutdown to minimize how many people enter different cabins.

Heald did consult with management – which he calls “the beards” – about beginning stateroom gift delivery again.

“However, having read so many negative comments from people saying they do not want the gift and would either throw it away, etc., I think this is not the time to do this,” he said. “For now, please do collect the bag from the [Pixels] Photo Gallery.”

The new fanny pack / bum bag gift, a navy blue bag with a red zipper and VIFP patch, is scheduled to debut starting from April 6 on all Carnival cruise ships except Carnival Luminosa and Carnival Splendor, which are still waiting for delivery of the items.

Cruising Ducks Discarded Overboard

The cruising duck phenomenon is making a splash aboard all cruise lines, but none more so than aboard Carnival, where the trend really took off in 2018. Hiding small rubber ducks around cruise ships has become a fun game and an expression of kindness.

While it is not an official cruise activity, Heald recently addressed the idea that crew members who find ducks are throwing them overboard.

“This is completely untrue,” Heald said. “If any crew member throws anything overboard they would be in serious trouble and would for sure face disciplinary action.”

Just as many cruisers enjoy finding ducks, so do many crew members enjoy discovering the quirky surprises. “Many of the crew love finding the ducks and have them in their cabins as they bring them cheer,” Heald explained.

Anyone who does not like the ducks does not need to participate in the activity, and can simply leave the cruising ducks wherever they have been hidden for another guest to discover.

Getting Your Questions Answered

No matter what type of question or concern a cruiser may have, Carnival Cruise Line always tries to provide correct and timely information.

This is why it is important for booked guests to be familiar with their cruise contract, to give the cruise line their updated contact information in case of alerts or changes, and to take the time to choose the very best cruise line to meet their travel expectations.

Cruises Cancelled Unexpectedly for MSC Cruise Ship

MSC Cruises has announced the cancellation of multiple cruises scheduled for April 2023 due to the extended shipyard stay of the MSC Seaview in Malta. The company is now working to accommodate affected passengers.

The drydock period for MSC Seaview was supposed to take just two weeks. However, this timeline has now more than doubled.

Unexpected Delays Lead to Cancelled MSC Seaview Cruises

MSC Cruises has been forced to cancel several cruises in April 2023. The cruise ship arrived in Paolo, Malta, on March 31, 2023, following its last voyage, which concluded in Barcelona two days prior. The ship was initially scheduled to spend two-and-a-half weeks in dry dock before resuming cruising on April 17 in Genoa, Italy.

However, the nearly five-year-old ship is now facing longer-than-expected repair times, according to Kreuzfahrt Aktuelles. This has led to the cancellation of seven cruises, with guests being informed by MSC Cruises about the changes to their plans.

During the shipyard period in Malta, technical and inspection work was planned for MSC Seaview. It is not clear what the exact issue is that is taking longer, although several online sources mention extensive engine work that is being performed. The cruise ship’s sistership, MSC Seaside, suffered engine problems in July last year, forcing the vessel into dry dock for repairs.

The cancelled cruises include those departing from Genoa on April 17, 24, and May 1; Civitavecchia on April 19 and 26; and Palma de Mallorca on April 21 and 28.

MSC Cruises is working to accommodate affected customers and provide them with alternative options for their travel plans while also providing them with onboard credit to be used on a future voyage. MSC Seaview is now expected to resume operations on May 3, departing from Civitavecchia – two and a half weeks later than initially scheduled.

MSC Seaview: Summer in Europe and Winter in Brazil

Upon resuming operations, the MSC Seaview will spend the 2023 summer season cruising the Western Mediterranean through November 18. During the winter month, the cruise ship will sail around Brazil.

During the summer, guests can sail on week-long voyages from various ports in the Western Mediterranean, including La Spezia, Barcelona, Cannes, and Genoa. MSC Cruises offers passengers the flexibility to begin and end their cruises at different ports, with the cruise duration also variable.

From November 18 to December 5, 2023, MSC Seaview will sail on a 17-night MSC Grand Voyage cruise. The voyage will start in Genoa, Italy, on November 18, before going to Palma de Mallorca, Cartagena, and Malaga, Spain.

Following the calls in Spain, MSC Seaview will visit Casablanca, Morocco, and the Canary Islands, from where the ship will sail across the Atlantic Ocean. In Brazil, the ship will visit Salvador de Bahia and Ilheus and conclude in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on December 5.

The 153,516 gross tons MSC Seaview is a Seaside-class cruise ship constructed by Fincantieri, in Monfalcone, Italy. Delivered in June 2018, the 4,132-guest cruise ship is the sister ship to MSC Seaside

MSC Cruises Marks Milestone With 12 Million in Donations

Donations from guests sailing aboard the MSC Cruises’ fleet have made it possible for the line to reach a major milestone in its financial contributions to UNICEF, the nonprofit humanitarian agency that helps children across the globe. The fundraising effort onboard MSC Cruises’ 19-ship fleet is coordinated by the MSC Foundation.

Fundraising Passes 12 Million Euro Mark

MSC Cruises, for the past 13 years, has partnered with UNICEF in a program that accepts donations from cruise guests who wish to contribute to the line’s fundraising efforts. The line announced on April 5 that the “Get On Board With Children” campaign has surpassed the 12 million euro mark, or roughly $13 million.

Through its partnership in helping to fund six UNICEF programs, the MSC Foundation since 2009 has extended financial aid to children in eight countries.

The donated funds have provided desperately needed food to more than 115,000 children suffering from severe malnutrition in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia and Malawi, and have supported education programs for some 8,000 children in more than 100 communities in Brazil. Monies also have been distributed to mitigate malaria in African countries and to boost China’s food supplement program that prevents child malnutrition.

MSC Foundation Executive Director Daniela Picco said, “It is an honor to work hand in hand with UNICEF. Our partnership has grown from strength to strength ever since we set out together 13 years ago. It’s been a journey of great teamwork, working on very different programs across the world, but always achieving incredible results for the children.”

She added, “We are extremely proud of this new milestone and very grateful for the generous donations of the millions of MSC Cruises guests who have been moved to assist UNICEF’s wonderful work over these years.”

As part of the “Get On Board With Children” campaign, MSC Cruises also offers shipboard edutainment activities meant to engage young cruisers. The line’s Kids United magazine, for instance, is designed to ben an interactive way for children to learn about important topics as part of their cruise experience.

Multi-faceted Aid Programs Across The Globe

The MSC Foundation’s work with UNICEF doesn’t end with financial assistance to children’s programs. Recent initiatives that benefitted from guest donations include helping communities affected by flooding in Malawi, and by severe weather events in Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

In 2019 the foundation expanded its role with the humanitarian organization by becoming the first partner in a program called “Plastic Waste Goes to School,” in the West African nation of Ivory Coast. The project’s goal is to build schools using bricks constructed from recycled plastic waste. The program empowers the country’s vulnerable women by training them as plastic waste collectors.

So far, 188 women have participated in the program, which enables them to earn money working in the UNICEF-supported plastic waste factory. Some 1.3 million pounds of plastic already has been recycled into construction bricks that today are used in 112 classrooms. As a result, more than 6,000 children have access to those classrooms.

UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein CEO Bettina Junker said: “We are extremely grateful that our partnership with the MSC Foundation has reached yet another impressive milestone with EUR 12 million donations to date. We highly appreciate the MSC Foundation’s generous support and powerful awareness-building around UNICEF’s work. We look forward to the next chapter in our partnership and are excited to continue driving change for children and young people every day.”

Richard Branson’s Virgin Voyages Seeks New Funding

Sir Richard Branson’s cruise-line venture, Virgin Voyages, is in the early stages of seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in fresh funding from new and existing investors.

The new funding round comes as the Virgin Group founder faces financial turbulence in other parts of his business empire. Virgin Orbit has recently gone under, and Branson has been vocal about the impact of the pandemic on its leisure activities, although it is unclear what the impact has been on Virgin Voyages.

Virgin Voyages in Financial Turmoil?

According to Sky News, Virgin Voyages is planning a new investment round involving new and existing investors, with the company looking for hundreds of millions of dollars. Although it’s too early to determine the scale of the fundraising or the mix of debt and equity, it would involve.

Virgin Voyages’ latest talks about raising funding come just seven months after it secured $550 million from investors. With two ships in the pipeline for this year, one of which has already been delayed, it’s not unlikely the company needs funds to make it to the end of the year.

This disclosure of Virgin Voyages’ talks to secure new capital comes just days after Virgin Orbit, Sir Richard’s commercial satellites business, announced it would lay off the majority of its staff and cease operations due to a lack of funds. Branson injected $11 million into the business this week to fund the redundancies of nearly 700 staff members.

Despite the possible financial issues, Virgin Voyages has been extremely successful in doing what it set out to do. From the get-go, Virgin has been a company that has shaken up the cruise industry and has proven that a new cruise line can show up and be successful.

The adults-only cruise line launched in 2021, following a 15-month delay caused by COVID-19, with its maiden journey from Portsmouth in August of that year.

The company operates two cruise ships, the Scarlet Lady and the Valiant Lady, with a third vessel, the Resilient Lady, set to launch next month and a fourth, Brilliant Lady, due later this year.

The delay of its first ship due to the pandemic, a delay for its third ship due to global supply issues, and low occupancy levels in the year following the pandemic due to pandemic-related measures have certainly played a role in the company now searching for additional funds.

Virgin Voyages is continuing to sail and amaze guests on board, with the company adding a new destination in the Caribbean in January 2024.

New Caribbean Destination

Virgin Voyages is adding another new destination in the Caribbean, Antigua and Barbuda, showing the cruise line is continuing to develop its product despite the investments Virgin is seeking.

The fast-growing cruise hotspot of Saint John’s, the capital of Antigua and Barbuda, will begin receiving calls from Virgin Voyages in January 2024

Cruises that include calls to Antigua also include calls to Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Pointe A Pitre; Bridgetown, Barbados; Castries, St Lucia; and finally Antigua, before returning to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Juan Trescastro, VP of Global Destinations at Virgin Voyages, announced that Antigua will be a port of call for Brilliant Lady. The ship will stay in Antigua until 10 PM during each stop, giving guests more than enough time to explore what Antigua has to offer.

All three of the “ladyships” weigh in at 110,000 gross tons and can welcome as many as 2,700 guests per sailing, with 93% of the cabins offering ocean views and 86% of the cabins featuring spacious balconies.

Virgin Voyages currently has two ships sailing, Valiant Lady and Scarlet Lady. Resilient Lady is set to launch on May 14, 2023. Its first cruise is the seven-night Resilient Lady Athens Mermaiden itinerary.

Brilliant Lady is set to launch on December 24, 2023, with a five-night Brilliant Miami Mermaiden Holidays cruise, including stops in Puerto Plata/Amber Cove, St. Croix, and San Juan.
