Rope Swing Injury on Cruise Excursion Leaves Woman With $53,500 in Bills

Key Aspects:

  • A Louisiana woman suffered an unusual rope swing injury during a shore excursion from her first Carnival Cruise.
  • The severity of the injury accelerated quickly once the woman returned to the ship, eventually requiring evacuation.
  • Costs of the medical care, surgeries, and evacuation have risen to $53,500.

UPDATE: Cruise Hive received the following statement from Carnival Cruise Line about this incident:

We are aware of reports regarding a guest who was injured while independently exploring Honduras. After returning to the ship, the guest was promptly cared for by our onboard medical team, which provided treatment and facilitated access to additional medical resources. While the incident did not occur on a Carnival-sponsored excursion, we remain concerned for the guest’s recovery. The safety and well-being of our guests is always our top priority.

Even a small injury on a cruise is never welcome, but one Louisiana woman suffered a traumatic and unusual injury while visiting Honduras during her very first Carnival cruise, ultimately leading to an expensive medical evacuation from a foreign country.

According to KTAL NBC 6, Kirsten Lindsey from Shreveport, Louisiana, was injured while on an excursion using a rope swing. Video of the incident shows Lindsey holding the knotted rope swing on an elevated platform and swinging out over the water.

A retrieval line attached to the top of the swing appears to catch between Lindsey’s legs, and as she slips, it roughly snags her in a sensitive area.

She is held briefly by the thin retrieval line before letting go of the rope and falling into the water. Lindsey’s boyfriend, Blake Ford, believes the retrieval line was not connected properly.

“As she swung out, the line tightened between her legs just before she dropped, causing a catastrophic injury,” Ford described in a GoFundMe he has organized to help cover medical expenses.

At first, neither Lindsey nor Ford believed the injury to be serious, but within hours her pain had increased severely and the injury site was significantly swollen.

Expenses Quickly Rose

Lindsey initially spent more than 12 hours in the ship’s medical center and was eventually evacuated to Costa Maya in Mexico. From there, the couple had to make arrangements to return to the United States via air evacuation for further care, including surgery.

Ultimately, medical bills from the cruise ship reached more than $3,500, with the evacuation costs soaring to more than $50,000 for ambulance fees in Mexico and private medical jet transportation to Fort Lauderdale.

The ship and sailing date of the incident have not been revealed, only that Lindsey was injured on the third day of the sailing. Isla Roatan in Honduras, now known as Isla Tropicale, is a popular port visit for many Carnival ships on Western Caribbean itineraries.

Carnival Celebration from Miami, for example, typically visits the destination on the third or fourth day of its weeklong cruises, and was most recently in Honduras on Wednesday, July 15.

Carnival Jubilee also visits Isla Tropicale on its 7-night sailings from Galveston, but not always on the third day depending on the sailing date and exact route. The same is true on Carnival Liberty‘s 7-night sailings from New Orleans.

On her 6-night sailings from Tampa, Carnival Paradise often visits Isla Tropicale on the third or fourth day of the cruise. Most recently, the ship was in Honduras on Thursday, July 9.

Mardi Gras from Port Canaveral also visits the destination during 7-night Western Caribbean voyages, sometimes but not always on the third day.

Was the Excursion Unsafe?

UPDATE – Carnival Cruise Line has since confirmed this was not a tour purchased through the cruise line.

Many tour operators offer safe, enjoyable activities for cruise guests, but costs can seem unreasonable, particularly for new travelers or those on tighter budgets. Tours offered directly at the cruise port or close to the terminal area may seem like easier, more affordable options, but they are not always covered by the same guidelines and safety regulations.

Cruise Hive has reported unusual accidents before, both from tours recommended by cruise lines as well as independent tour operators.

For example, in March 2025, a young woman was drastically injured during an excursion in the Bahamas, ultimately losing both her legs. That incident occurred during a Carnival Celebration sailing and a tour purchased through the cruise line.

Carnival Cruise Line’s shore excursions FAQ, however, makes it clear that the cruise line is not responsible for the safety of excursions.

“Carnival is not responsible for any losses, damage, death, injuries, or claims whatsoever arising from, connected with, or related to any activities engaged in by guests while off of Carnival’s ships or tenders in any port of call,” the FAQ reads.

“This includes all shore excursions, whether sold onboard or by third parties ashore. You will engage in all such activities off the ship at your own risk.”

Guests should always be aware of their own abilities when selecting and participating in shore tours, as well as remain alert during excursion activities for possible hazards or uncertain situations.

Crew Death Aboard Celebrity Cruise Ship Prompts Italian Police Investigation

Key Aspects:

  • A 33-year-old female steward was found deceased in her stateroom on Celebrity Constellation on Sunday, July 19.
  • Authorities in La Spezia, Italy, joined the investigation efforts when the ship docked that morning.
  • The official cause of death has not been announced.

In a startling tragedy aboard Celebrity Constellation, a 33-year-old female steward was found deceased in her stateroom on Sunday, July 19, 2026 as the ship docked in La Spezia, Italy.

According to Il Secolo XIX, the woman, only identified as KD and stated to be from Mauritius, was found by her partner and co-worker. Medical personnel aboard the ship were alerted and the ship’s officers also responded to the situation.

As the ship arrived in port and docked successfully at 7 a.m., Squadre Volanti officers from the Office of General Prevention and Public Aid of the Italian State Police boarded the 90,940-gross-ton ship to join the investigation. It is standard procedure for local authorities to be involved in such investigations.

The cause of death has not been officially announced or confirmed. According to the report, authorities also found some discrepancies between when the woman’s partner claimed to have been in the stateroom and time-stamped footage from the ship’s security cameras.

This does not yet indicate any foul play or suspicion of guilt. No charges have been filed at this time and there have been no arrests made.

The woman’s body was moved first to a local funeral home and then to the Sant’Andrea Hospital morgue, just one mile from the La Spezia cruise terminal, to be available for authorities to investigate. The funeral home is taking steps to contact the Consulate of the State of Mauritius and the woman’s family to make further arrangements as needed.

Celebrity Constellation has a crew complement of roughly 1,000 team members from dozens of countries. Crew contracts generally last several months, but there is no indication of when the woman joined the vessel or whether this was her first contract with Celebrity Cruises.

The cruise line has not made any official statement about the woman’s death. This is standard procedure when an investigation may be necessary, though Celebrity Cruises is likely to provide counseling services and other support to other crew members during this difficult time.

No Delay for the Ship

The Millennium-class ship does not appear to have been delayed departing from La Spezia as planned at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, and the ship returned to Civitavecchia (Rome) on Monday, July 20. This was the end of the 10-day one-way sailing that first departed Ravenna, Italy on July 10.

La Spezia was the final port visit for the ship, following several other destinations in Italy, Montenegro, and Croatia.

Celebrity Constellation has already departed Civitavecchia on her next sailing, an 11-day one-way itinerary back to Ravenna. The 2,170-passenger ship is not scheduled to call at La Spezia on the current voyage but will be back to the popular port on the Italian Riviera on August 9.

Crew Deaths Rare But Do Happen

It is a tragic fact that crew deaths do happen occasionally onboard cruise ships. The stress of the job, combined with a heavy workload and being away from close friends and family members for several months at a time, takes a very high emotional toll.

Cruise Hive has previously reported overboard incidents that are believed to be deliberate actions, such as the crew member overboard from Hebridean Princess in Scotland in June 2026.

Similar incidents have been recorded from ships of all sizes as well as many different cruise lines, including Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, AIDA Cruises, and others.

In other cases, violent altercations as well as accidents have led to the deaths of crew members while at sea or in ports of call.

Princess Cruise Ship Investigates Mysterious Ghost Lifeboat Off Alaska

Key Aspects:

  • Guests and crew aboard Emerald Princess spotted a lone lifeboat off the coast of Alaska.
  • The ship investigated the mysterious lifeboat for around an hour before being cleared by the Coast Guard.
  • The lifeboat turned out to be abandoned from a cargo ship that sank last year.

A mystery unfolded off the southern coast of Alaska on July 18, 2026. Princess Cruises’ 3,090-guest Emerald Princess was sailing a seven-day, round-trip Alaska itinerary out of Vancouver in Canada.

The ship was sailing towards Ketchikan from Endicott Arm Fjord, when an orange object was spotted floating alone in the sea, approximately 13 nautical miles southeast of Port Alexander. At around 8:00 pm, guests onboard reported that the captain announced that the ship would be temporarily changing direction to investigate the object.

The object turned out to be a lone lifeboat, bobbing on its side, heavy with grime and wear. The words “lifeboat” and “rescue boat” could still be read on the boat’s portside hull. Mysteriously, there were no signs of life within the boat, nor any large vessel nearby that it may have been deployed from.

When a vessel is adrift in the ocean with seemingly no people aboard, it is commonly referred to as a “ghost ship”. Guests were quick to dub the adrift rescue boat a “ghost lifeboat”.

Due to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), an international treaty administered by the International Maritime Organization and first implemented in 1914 in response to the infamous Titanic disaster, all ships have a duty to investigate and aid any vessel found in distress.

Cruise Hive has reported on several similar cases recently, where a cruise ship following SOLAS regulations has led to lives being saved, such as in May 2026, when Carnival’s Mardi Gras rescued nine people adrift in a disabled boat off the coast of Florida.

Emerald Princess reportedly circled the lifeboat for around an hour, with crew attempting to assess the situation while in communication with the U.S. Coast Guard. All the while, guests onboard watched, with many speculating as to what was happening and where the lifeboat came from.

Eventually, the captain came back on the PA system and announced to guests that the Coast Guard had released them, explaining that the lifeboat had been abandoned. Emerald Princess continued on her itinerary as scheduled, docking in Ketchikan on July 19. She is scheduled to return to Vancouver on July 21.

Where Did The Lifeboat Come From?

It was eventually revealed that the ghost lifeboat was a remnant from Morning Midas, a 46,800 gross ton cargo ship that sank in June 2025. On June 3, 2025, Morning Midas was about 300 miles southwest of Adak Island in Alaska, carrying around 3,000 cars from Yantai, China to Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico, when a fire broke out onboard.

It is speculated that the fire may have been a result of a catastrophic lithium battery failure from one of the 70 electric or 681 partially electric hybrid vehicles onboard. Crews attempted to battle the fire for some time, but were unsuccessful.

All 22 crew members onboard safely evacuated the vessel, boarding lifeboats like the one found by Emerald Princess before being rescued by a nearby merchant vessel, Cosco Hellas. There were no reported injuries. Morning Midas finally sank below the waves from the fire damage twenty days later on June 23.

So, while there may not have been any actual ghosts on the lifeboat, it still served as a haunting reminder of how quickly things can go wrong at sea, and how regulations, like those implemented by SOLAS, can keep a bad situation from becoming deadly.

Barcelona Slams Cruise Passengers With Maximum €24 Daily Tax

Key Aspects:

  • Barcelona’s city council has decided to accelerate what should have been a gradual increase in taxes on visiting cruise guests.
  • Officials have pledged to increase the daily tax for cruise passengers to €24, the legal maximum.
  • The purpose of the tax is to encourage homeporting operations while mitigating overcrowding from short port calls.

Barcelona’s plan to slowly raise its taxes on cruise passengers is simply not fast enough for local officials.

Metropoli Abierta reported that the local government agreed to immediately increase municipal taxes to the daily maximum of €24 (About $27.39 USD) during a meeting of the Economy and Finance Commission on July 15, 2026.

As previously reported by Cruise Hive, the current city tax of €4 (approximately $4.57 USD) was originally supposed to double to €8 ($9.13 USD) in 2025. The cruise guest tax would then gradually increase over several years before reaching the legal maximum in 2029.

Additionally, cruise guests will still be required to pay a €6 (or $6.85 USD) regional government fee, meaning the daily per-person total is actually €30 (about $34.24 USD).

The fee will apply specifically to cruise guests visiting the capital of Catalonia for less than 12 hours on single-day port calls. Homeporting passengers, who begin and end their vacations in Barcelona, will be exempt from the tax.

To be clear, this is a fee that each individual passenger will be required to pay, though the cruise lines typically collect and pay the taxes on behalf of their guests.

While local authorities have already approved the new fee, it must officially be enacted into law, which is expected to coincide with fiscal meetings happening at the end of 2026.

Why is Barcelona Raising Taxes?

The purpose of the tax increase is to encourage homeporting operations while reducing the number of port calls that arrive in the city to mitigate overcrowding.

Supporters of the new tax order argued that the current cruise ship activity in Barcelona is unsustainable and that the number of cruise tourists still needs to be reduced. They said raising the tax was justified because of unsustainable overcrowding.

Currently, city leaders are also discussing an annual cap of 3.5 million cruise passengers, with the port welcoming nearly 4 million guests each year on average.

Previously, Barcelona implemented a partial cruise ban that forbids vessels from docking at the Northern docks (Muelle Barcelona Norte to the World Trade Center), primarily to mitigate pollution within the city center.

In 2025, the city cut the number of cruise terminals available at Barcelona’s Adossat Wharf from seven to five in an attempt to curb overcrowding.

And in an effort to modernize infrastructure, terminals A, B, and C will be demolished and replaced with a single larger and more efficient cruise terminal. This is expected to occur by 2030.

European Destinations Block Cruise Ships

Barcelona isn’t alone in its efforts to limit cruise tourism. Several other European destinations have attempted to deter cruise ships through increased taxes, bans and passenger caps, or all of the above.

Staying within Spain, Ibiza only allows a maximum of two cruise ships to dock at one time. Meanwhile, Palma (Majorca) has a daily maximum of three cruise ships per day, only one of which can be a mega-ship carrying over 5,000 passengers.

The Greek Isles, which have also struggled with overcrowding, implemented a seasonal cruise tax that took effect in summer of 2025.

Additional limitations have been implemented at destinations throughout Italy, France, Croatia, and the Netherlands.

Cunard To Give Queen Victoria A Three-Week Transformation

Key Aspects:

  • Cunard Line has unveiled plans for a major, three-week dry dock renovation for Queen Victoria.
  • Classic onboard spaces, such as the Grand Lobby and Queen’s Room, will see extensive upgrades.
  • The 2,061-guest ship will also see new spaces added, such as new staterooms and the popular Pavilion Wellness Cafe.

Every queen needs the occasional beauty sleep and wardrobe changes. Cunard Line just revealed plans and details to spruce up its own queen, the 90,049 gross ton Queen Victoria, in an extensive dry dock this autumn.

Cruise Hive has learned that the nearly twenty-year-old ship, first launched in 2007, will enter dry dock at Damen Shiprepair in Rotterdam, Netherlands from October 17, 2026 until November 5, 2026. Damen Shiprepair has worked with Cunard Line for many years and previously oversaw the dry dock renovations of Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth in 2025.

During her almost three-week transformation, the 2,061 guest capacity ship will be upgraded and enhanced, introducing new spaces and updating old classics. Cunard President, Katie McAlister, reflected on the cruise line’s second-oldest ship and expressed excitement for the coming upgrades.

“Queen Victoria has always held a special place in the hearts of our guests…,” said McAlister. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to refine the experiences and spaces she offers, with every decision approached with deep respect for the heritage and charm that make her who she is.

Queen Victoria will see some of her signature common spaces get a major facelift, including a refreshed Grand Lobby to greet guests with an immediate and elegant wow factor upon boarding. The ship’s Queens Room, which hosts Cunard’s afternoon tea as well as live music and gala evenings, will also see a refresh.

Queens Room
Queens Room

Other spaces seeing major enhancements will be Cunard’s Grill Suites, luxurious suites offering a royal experience and premium benefits, including priority embarkation, exclusive menus, and a dedicated concierge. Both Queens Grill and Princess Grill Suites will receive upgraded designs, with new furnishings and detailing.

New Onboard Spaces

Besides the refreshed spaces onboard, Queen Victoria will also receive some new additions. The vessel will introduce eight extra Britannia staterooms. Three of these new staterooms will be from a new premium category: Britannia Deluxe Oceanview.

These new staterooms, which are now officially open to bookings, will feature floor-to-ceiling windows, promising panoramic ocean views. While the ship returns to service on November 7th, bookings for the new Britannia Deluxe Oceanview staterooms are open for sailings from November 11, 2026 onward.

In another exciting move, Queen Victoria will become the third Cunard ship to receive the Pavilion Wellness Cafe. First introduced on Queen Anne upon her launch in 2024 and subsequently added to Queen Elizabeth in 2025, the Pavilion Wellness Cafe offers a wellness-focused, plant-based menu for breakfast, lunch, and dining throughout the day.

No official word yet on whether Cunard will add the popular eatery to their fourth and oldest ship, the 149,215 gross-ton Queen Mary 2, to round out the fleet. However, if this addition to Queen Victoria is any indication, it seems likely that the Pavilion Wellness Cafe may be on its way to Queen Mary 2 when she is scheduled for dry dock in early 2027.

Queen Victoria will return to service November 7, 2026. Her first sailing after her three-week renovation will be a four-night, round-trip Zeebrugge and Cherbourg sailing from Southampton, UK.

Developing Gulf Storm Could Reshape Cruise Plans in the Days Ahead

Key Aspects:

  • Tropical Depression Two has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and may impact ships from New Orleans and Galveston.
  • The storm is likely to strengthen over the next few days into Tropical Storm Bertha as it heads west.
  • No official cruise impacts have yet been announced, but guests on several ships should stay alert for possible changes.

The second official tropical system of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has developed in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America). With the potential course of what is likely to become a tropical storm tracking along the coast, ships from both New Orleans and Galveston may feel impacts over the next few days.

On Sunday, July 19, 2026, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued its first advisory on Tropical Depression Two. As of the most recent update, issued at 2 p.m. on Sunday, the center of the storm is 155 miles west of Port Tampa Bay and moving north-northwest at just one mile per hour.

This slow movement will encourage further development of the storm, which is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm by late Sunday night or early Monday morning.

“The sprawling nature of the system, nearby dry air, and some northeasterly vertical wind shear suggest that any strengthening
should be slow to occur, especially in the short term,”
the NHC explained.

“Nonetheless, the system is expected to become a tropical storm as it approaches the Florida Panhandle during the next day or two. There seems to be a better opportunity for the system to strengthen once it turns westward, however, the amount of strengthening will be dependent on how far offshore the circulation is.”

Maximum sustained winds are currently at 30 miles per hour with higher gusts. The winds will continue to rise as the storm strengthens.

A tropical storm watch is already in effect for the Florida Panhandle from the Alabama state line to south of Tallahassee, with localized flooding possible.

Will Cruise Ports Be Impacted?

Depending on exactly how the storm strengthens and the track it takes, both the Port of New Orleans and the Port of Galveston may be impacted.

As a matter of note, no cruise ships are currently sailing from the Port of Mobile, which is also in the storm’s path.

The storm, which will be named Bertha once she officially crosses the 39-mph wind threshold to a tropical storm, will be at the closest approach to New Orleans late Wednesday evening, July 22. No cruise ships are slated to visit the Big Easy on that day, or on either Tuesday or Thursday.

Carnival Valor is scheduled to depart New Orleans on Monday, July 20 for a 5-night Western Caribbean sailing to Cozumel and Progreso. That departure is unlikely to be impacted by the storm, but booked guests should stay alert to any notifications of schedule changes from Carnival Cruise Line.

On Friday, July 24, the storm may have a significant impact on Galveston, Texas. Carnival Breeze will depart the port on Thursday, July 23, and may have some adjustment for the storm depending on the exact path, speed, and strength of the system.

No ships are sailing from Galveston on Friday, but on Saturday, July 25, three ships will be in port: Carnival Jubilee, Carnival Dream, and Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas.

Depending on how the storm develops and whether the port sustains any damage, it is possible those three ships may be impacted.

Both Carnival Jubilee and Mariner of the Seas will be sailing Western Caribbean itineraries. Carnival Jubilee is scheduled for a weeklong cruise to Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Roatan, while Mariner of the Seas will begin a 5-night cruise to Costa Maya and Cozumel.

Carnival Dream will be sailing an 8-night Eastern Caribbean voyage with four ports of call: Key West, Celebration Key, Half Moon Cay, and Nassau.

There have been no confirmed itinerary changes to any of the ships as of this writing. Cruise lines monitor storm systems closely and will make any necessary adjustments with the most updated information as sailing dates approach.

2.4 Million Guests Prove Celebration Key’s First Year Was a Huge Win

Key Aspects:

  • Carnival Cruise Line celebrated the one-year anniversary of the opening of Celebration Key on July 19, 2026.
  • The occasion was marked by special performances and activities.
  • The cruise line reflected on the destination’s success, both as a financial enterprise and as a mechanism for positive impact.

As the old saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun. That’s certainly the case today at Carnival Cruise Line’s private destination, Celebration Key. The Bahamas cruise destination celebrated its one-year anniversary after Cruise Hive reported on the opening on July 19, 2025.

It’s been a busy first year for Celebration Key, too, as it has welcomed a staggering 2.4 million guests in that time, keeping a steady pace since welcoming its one-millionth guest after just five months of operation in December 2025.

“Our goal is to create unforgettable memories for our guests, and in its first year, the destination has done exactly that for more than 2 million people,” said Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line. “We’re proud to be part of those moments while also creating real, lasting impact in the local community.”

The private destination celebrated this milestone with a day jam-packed with special activities for guests visiting from Carnival Conquest and Carnival Freedom with a combined guest capacity of 5,960.

One highlight Carnival Cruise Line arranged was a special birthday-inspired Junkanoo performance. A Junkanoo is a traditional Bahamian street parade and musical festival, full of vibrant colors, music, and dancing.

Celebration Key Birthday
Celebration Key Birthday

Additional anniversary activities for guests include interactive scavenger hunts and a giant birthday cake displayed at the destination’s entrance.

In this first year, Carnival reports that Celebration Key has sent over 500,000 guests down waterslides, served over 400,000 sweet treats at Mini Donut King, and poured over 100,000 piña coladas.

The Greater Impact of Celebration Key

As if all of that wasn’t something to boast about, Celebration Key also received the distinct honor of becoming the first cruise destination to earn Sensory Inclusive Certification through KultureCity.

The cruise line has a long-standing partnership with the non-profit organization, which is dedicated to raising awareness and sensory accessibility for individuals with invisible disabilities.

Celebration Key has also helped the local economy in Grand Bahama and individuals living there. Approximately 1,000 year-round local jobs are supported by the private destination.

Carnival also makes an effort to partner with local Bahamian businesses. According to Carnival, more than 80 percent of Celebration Key’s retail and food operators are locally owned.

The destination also supports the locals in other ways, including its Less Left Over program, which aims to reduce food waste by donating surplus food and unserved meals to local organizations. This anniversary coincides with an expansion of that program, with Carnival Freedom and Carnival Conquest making the program’s first donations to the region.

Looking To The Future

Carnival isn’t looking to let its destination stagnate. While no details were given, President Christine Duffy alluded to more improvements and expansions coming to Celebration Key in the future.

“As we look ahead, we’re excited to continue building on this momentum, creating new experiences for our guests and deepening our commitment to Grand Bahama and its people,” said Duffy.

It’s already done work to improve the destination since opening, adjusting things based on guest feedback, and doubling its ship capacity by opening a new pier extension in June 2026. Whatever Carnival does with Celebration Key in the years to come, it’s sure to be a good time if the first year is anything to go off of.

Coast Guard Airlifts Woman from Carnival Ship Near California

Key Aspects:

  • A 51-year-old woman was airlifted from Carnival Luminosa after experiencing symptoms of a stroke.
  • Despite the difficult conditions, the rescue went off without complications.
  • The woman was taken to a Northern California hospital, where she is reportedly in stable condition.

One woman’s summer cruise aboard Carnival Luminosa came to an abrupt end when it had barely begun on the evening of Wednesday, July 15, 2026, when she was airlifted by the U.S. Coast Guard, in need of medical attention.

The 92,720 gross ton vessel was on the second-to-last day of its ten-day, round-trip Alaska sailing, which departed from San Francisco, California at 4:00 p.m. July 6, 2026 when an unidentified 51-year-old female passenger began experiencing symptoms of a stroke.

Crew members sent an urgent message requesting medevac to the Coast Guard, received by the Sector Humboldt Bay watchstanders at 5:10 p.m. Wednesday evening. An aircrew was dispatched from Humboldt Bay, California’s second-largest bay, 45 miles from Carnival Luminosa’s location at the time.

The aircrew had to battle 40-mile-per-hour winds and ocean swells up to ten feet high as they approached the ship in an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter. Despite these difficult conditions, the crew operated like a well-oiled machine.

U.S. Coast Guard personnel abseiled onto the ship and assessed the situation onboard. After meeting with the ship’s crew and the unwell woman, they successfully hoisted her up to the helicopter. Video shared by the U.S. Coast Guard on social media shows the harrowing rescue in action.

The woman was then taken to Mendocino Coast Hospital in Fort Bragg, California, for further treatment. She is reportedly now in stable condition. For one member of the Coast Guard crew, co-pilot Lieutenant Junior Grade Nathan O’Brien, this was a landmark career moment: his first life saved as a U.S. Coast Guard aviator.

Carnival Luminosa continued her itinerary without further interruption, returning to San Francisco with the remainder of her 2,260 guests on July 16, 2026. She has since departed on a 4-day, round-trip cruise stopping in Ensenada, Mexico, and is scheduled to return to San Francisco on July 20.

Other Recent Coast Guard Rescues

It’s been a busy first half of the year for Coast Guard rescues on cruise ships.

Shortly after this woman was airlifted from Carnival Luminosa on the west coast, on the other end of the country, a pregnant cruiser experiencing pregnancy complications was rescued via Coast Guard boat from Carnival Sunrise off the coast of Florida on July 16.

Those aren’t the only rescues in quick succession from Carnival Cruise Ships in 2026, however. Earlier in March, the U.S. Coast Guard similarly conducted two separate rescues in the same day, from Carnival Valor and Carnival Jubilee.

Being airlifted from a cruise ship may sound dangerous and scary to some people. One Facebook user, commenting on the Coast Guard’s post about the Carnival Luminosa rescue, expressed their fears at the thought of being in the same situation.

“Omg! Id of had a stroke going in the basket,” said the user.

While cruise ships do usually have medical personnel and facilities onboard, the nature of being on a ship at sea means that they are not equipped to handle every medical situation that may come their way. In those cases, a medical evacuation (medevac) is necessary so the passenger can receive the proper care for their condition.

Due to the difficulty of such extractions, this task usually falls to the U.S. Coast Guard to handle when sailing in U.S. waters.

Multiple Cruise Guests Arrested in a Single Day at Port Canaveral

Key Aspects:

  • Six different cruise ship guests were arrested at Port Canaveral on Friday, July 17, for different warrants and probation violations.
  • The ships the guests were sailing on were not identified, but Carnival, Disney, and Royal Caribbean ships were in port.
  • Background checks for outstanding warrants are common at cruise ports, and such arrests are always possible.

It was a busy day at Port Canaveral on Friday, July 17, 2026, and not just because of the three cruise ships in port. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office arrested six different ship guests that day due to different violations and outstanding warrants.

Of the six, two of the arrested guests were 24-year-old Martell Murray and his traveling companion, 24-year-old Kenderia Burney, both from Atlanta, Georgia.

“Murray had a warrant reference a violation of his release conditions for his Murder charges…yes you read that correctly, and Burney had warrant for Violation of Probation!” the sheriff’s office confirmed on Facebook.

Murray and Burney were set to embark a ship on Friday, but instead “still got to vacation together” at “Ivey’s Iron Bar Lodge,” the tongue-in-cheek description for the Brevard County Jail. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office often pokes fun at criminals that are arrested, increasing awareness on social media that fugitives will not be tolerated.

Both Murray and Burney are currently being held without bond.

The third and fourth arrests were of 38-year-old Veronica Hamlet from Tampa, Florida and 66-year-old James Brewton from Allendale, South Carolina.

Both had minor court violations of failure to appear and a violation of probation warrant, respectively. Hamlet was released Saturday, July 18 on a $1,000 bond, while Brewton was released on Saturday on a $500 bond. It is not known whether Hamlet and Brewton knew one another or if they were embarking or disembarking sailings at the time of their arrests.

The final two arrests were of disembarking passengers who were both on felony probation and did not have approval to leave the country. Therefore, their cruise vacations were a direct violation of those probation terms. Their names were not released.

“Whether you’re from Florida or Alaska, if you come to Brevard County and break the law…or in this case have a warrant…you better believe that we will lock you up!” the sheriff’s office noted.

Which Cruise Ships Were Involved?

None of the ships the now-arrested guests were sailing on (or were supposed to sail on) were identified, but the cruise lines were not themselves involved in the arrests in any way. There is no indication of poor behavior or altercations onboard any of the ships.

Three ships from three different cruise lines were at Port Canaveral on Friday. Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Glory had just finished a 4-night Bahamas trip that visited Nassau and Celebration Key. The 2,980-guest vessel offers 3- and 4-night cruises year-round from the Space Coast.

Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wish was also in port, having just finished a 4-night Bahamas cruise to Nassau and Castaway Cay. Disney Wish can welcome as many as 4,000 guests when fully booked and likewise offers short 3- and 4-night sailings year-round from Port Canaveral.

Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas was the final ship in port on Friday, having just returned from a 4-night Bahamas sailing to Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay. The Oasis-class vessel was the largest ship in port that day, able to host 5,668 guests at once at double occupancy. The ship also offers 3- and 4-night cruises year-round from Port Canaveral.

There were no delays for any of the ships. All three have since departed on their regular 3-night weekend sailings.

Arrests Not Uncommon

Unfortunately, arrests at cruise ports are not uncommon. While large-scale incidents such as major brawls are relatively rare, local law enforcement does work with port and cruise line officials to arrest individuals with outstanding warrants.

Cruise Hive has regularly reported on such arrests. A Kentucky man was arrested at PortMiami in December 2024 for more than $100,000 in unpaid child support, and a Pennsylvania woman was arrested in 2025 for misappropriation of GoFundMe donations, including buying herself a cruise.

Embezzlement, drug possession, casino fraud, planting hidden cameras, credit card fraud, forged documents, sexual assault, and other charges have all led to guests being arrested at cruise terminals either before or after their sailings.
