Cruise Gratuities – Guide to Tipping on a Cruise Ship

When planning for your next adventure on the high seas, leave an opening in your budget for cruise gratuities. This is an expense that many travelers overlook when tallying the cost of a voyage. Yet, it can add hundreds of dollars to the final numbers and falls into the category of an important item for most passengers.

What Are Cruise Gratuities?

Cruise gratuities are the tips that each passenger pays during the trip. These are usually calculated on a per person/per day (or night) basis by the cruise lines.

While the exact fees can be determined by the type of cabin you book, they are different than a hotel stay in that every person in the cabin will be assessed the charge. (Children three years old and younger excepted in some instances.)

On your bill, cruise gratuities may be listed in several different ways: tips, service charges, crew appreciation fees, crew incentives and others. These costs are added onto the price of the journey and are often an automatic charge.

The stated reason for the latter (compulsory nature of this fee) is to ensure that all passengers pay their fair share. Although not technically “required,” tips are nonetheless expected.

Charging every passenger an automatic cruise gratuity also assures that crew members who work behind the scenes to deliver an exceptional vacation experience receive a share.

In the years past, cash in envelopes would only benefit the staff who directly interacted with the passengers. This “new” practice of automatic cruise gratuities allows a greater number of the crew to add this important contribution to their income. It is also a simple way for passengers to tip since all the calculations and distributions are handled by the cruise line.

To determine the final total of these costs, simply visit your selected cruise line’s website. All the exact numbers are there to help you plan accordingly for the actual price of your upcoming cruise.

How to Pay Tips on a Cruise Ship

There are three basic ways to pay tips on a cruise vacation. The first is to pre-pay cruise gratuities when you book your reservation. Passengers say that the best benefit to using this method of payment is sticker shock avoidance. While it may not sound like much money when quoted as a per person/per day cost, seeing the total on your final onboard bill can feel expensive.

Additionally, if you pre-pay and the tip amount per person/per day increases before your cruise date, you have saved some money by locking in the lower rates. While raising the tip rates does not often happen, if it did, your cumulative costs for the trip would be higher.

The second option is to allow the charge to be added each day to your onboard account. All expenses accrued (and not included in the price of your trip) will be due at the end of the voyage. For most large lines, cruise gratuities are part of the line items charges along with other “extras” you bought along the way.

Since all purchases on cruise ships are “cashless” (with the possible exception of the casino), it is a good idea to keep an eye on your onboard account. Download the app or check on your cabin’s TV for up-to-date charges.

The third option for tipping is to pay the old-fashioned way – cash. (See below about removing automatic cruise gratuities from your bill.) These cash tips can be given at the time of service or at the conclusion of your trip.

The benefit here is to directly thank specific crew members. However, it is unlikely that you would be able to tip any of the crew members who work out of the public view with this option.

You may also want to create a hybrid method by combining the basic options. For example, you can pre-pay and supplement with cash to those crew members who are above-and-beyond in their service skills.

This is also the suggestion for covering the tips for the personnel who are not in your cruise line’s automatic gratuity group. (See below for who does not get a share.)

NOTE: Most luxury lines fold tips into the price of the cruise. Additionally, some have a “no tipping” policy for their crews. With that said, however, exceptional service may warrant a gratuity offer. On these ships, your offer may be accepted or politely refused.

Who Shares the Automatic Cruise Gratuities

It takes a combined effort of a team of crew members to keep the ship in tip-top shape and create an enjoyable experience for the passengers. While we only interact with certain people in particular positions, they represent dozens of others who work hard at their jobs.

In former times, tips were only given to the crew who had face-to-face interactions with the passengers. This practice favored the front-of-the-house staff while others working behind the scenes had little opportunity to make more money.

How Much Do Cruise Ship Workers Make

For example, passengers were once assigned a dining table and saw the same wait staff throughout the voyage. Today, we can eat in any number of venues and have a host of different servers.

The newer system of charging cruise gratuities on a per person/per day basis has helped equalize this situation. In addition to the waitstaff and room stewards receiving portions of the fee, the funds are also shared by some cruise lines with crew members in other jobs. For example, food preparation, general housekeeping and maintenance, laundry and other important positions may receive a percentage.

Who Does Not (typically) Get a Share of Cruise Tips

With so many activities and venues to enjoy on a cruise ship, you will interact with a number of other crew members who will most likely not receive a portion of your automatic gratuity fee.

One example of this situation is childcare services. The people working in the areas responsible for the safety and entertainment of your children will (likely) only receive a tip if you offer one!

For some cruise lines, bartenders will have to “earn” their tips during the voyage. If you find a favorite spot at the same bar, chances are quite good that the bartender will learn your name (and maybe even your choice of beverage). Start the cruise with a nice tip upfront, and thank him or her at the end with another.

Similarly, if a waiter (or sommelier) is keeping track of your wine bottles, they are also expecting to receive an appropriate gratuity. And, if you enjoy ordering room service, it is still customary to offer a small tip each time the staff appears at your door with delicious food.

If a visit to the spas or salons onboard will be part of your cruise, keep in mind that these crew members may not be part of the tip-sharing program. After receiving good service, leave a nice tip.

Another circumstance where tipping is recommended beyond the automatic cruise gratuities is during shore excursions. If you have booked a tour with your cruise line at a port of call, your guide should receive a tip at the end.

This is also true for any tours booked with local guides. Look for a tip jar at the front of the bus or van; if you are on an extended tour with other shipmates, passing around an envelope to collect tips may be in order.

Also, anytime you hire transportation onshore, gratuities for the driver are appropriate (public transit excepted). This is often an important part of their income stream.

Tip Jar
Tip Jar (Photo Credit: yanishevska / Shutterstock)

The last (and first) person you will likely see is the luggage porter or baggage handler. Just as in other travel situations at airports, hotels and so forth, this person should be on your list to tip. This is particularly true if you are a “heavy” packer!

NOTE: When paying the cost of any of these or other services on the ship, check to see whether an automatic tip has already been included in the bill. This can be quite specific to the activity and the cruise line.

For example, some cruise lines have an automatic gratuity charge per drink or drinks package (including “free drink packages,”) and others add a tip percentage to all spa treatments.

So, if it is unclear, it is acceptable to ask if and which tips have been automatically charged to your bill. This will allow you to add an appropriate gratuity AND avoid double tipping.

How to Remove Cruise Gratuities from Your Bill

The debate continues as to the inclusion of “forced” cruise gratuities on board ship. Depending on your customs, culture or country, this will either seem perfectly fair or an unnecessary expense for services that are “part of the job.” Still others feel that tips should be earned and given in recognition of a “job well done.” Regardless of where passengers stand on the issue, this remains a monetary consideration during the next cruise vacation.

Read Also: Should You Tip on a Gratuities-Included Cruise?

Should the occasion occur that you feel the service on your cruise is consistently below standards, you do have the option to remove the gratuities from your bill. Prior to doing so, however, speak with someone at the front desk (purser’s desk or reception desk) to try to resolve the issues.

If this does not solve the problem, then you can request a refund of all or part of the amount; or, reduce the rate. Depending on the cruise line, this may be removed from your bill or issued as a ship credit. This can only be done on the ship prior to the end of the cruise since all funds will have been distributed to the crew after that point.

Carnival Guest Services Desk

If this is your course of action, consider offering a cash tip to those individuals who provided good service during your voyage. It is not often the case that all interactions with all crew members are substandard. So, take this opportunity to recognize the folks who worked hard to make your cruise pleasant.

Additionally, make a list of the employees who provided the best service and send a note of appreciation to the cruise line with their names included.

NOTE: If you are opposed to automatic gratuities and have decided to cancel them regardless, it is a good idea to let your room steward and front desk know that you will be tipping throughout the voyage instead. This is a respectful way to advise the crew ahead of time about your plans.

Also, there are certain cruise lines that do not allow cancellation or alteration of this expense. Read the fine print when you make your reservation.

How to Give Extra Appreciation

Whether you opt for pre-paying cruise gratuities, having them added to your charges during the voyage or passing out tips along the way, bring small bills (lots of them!). Waiting in line to exchange large denominations at guest services can be a hassle.

Also, bring along some envelopes or even a pack of small, printed thank you cards. When you have great service (or need to tip those above who are not part of the gratuity pool), hand the cash, envelope or card directly to the person. And, as the time to disembark approaches, make sure you let the crew members whom you have come to know that you appreciate them.

NOTE: With all the folks depending on tips for their income, the captain, officers, directors, executives and performers (piano bar performers excepted) are not. Do not tip them! Instead, write them a note of appreciation or mention them specifically in any positive reviews of your trip.

Final Note on Cruise Gratuities

While planning for your next voyage, search for cruise lines that are bundling onboard items and selling them at a discounted price. For example, you may be able to secure significant savings by purchasing a WiFi, drink and tips bundle when you book your reservation.

This usually requires deciding and paying in advance. And, the crew will still get their regular share even though you have received a discount on the cost.

Who Owns Celebrity Cruises?

Celebrity Cruises is one the most famous and innovative cruise lines around. Celebrity Cruises draws in all types of people, from young adults to families, to enjoy a relaxed luxury cruise without luxury prices. But who owns Celebrity Cruises?

In this article, you’ll learn who owns Celebrity Cruises, the history of this popular cruise line, and what to expect if you choose to take one of their luxury cruises.

The Owner of Celebrity Cruises Is…

Let’s jump right into who owns Celebrity Cruises.

Celebrity Cruises is owned by Royal Caribbean Group – the second biggest cruise company after Carnival Corporation. The CEO & President of Celebrity Cruises was Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, but in May 2023, she was promoted to Vice Chair, External Affairs for Royal Caribbean Group.

Currently, Laura Hodges Bethge holds the helm at the cruise line after being promoted from her previous role of executive vice president of shared services operations. The President & CEO of Royal Caribbean Group is Jason Liberty.

Celebrity is one of the three cruise brands the global cruise company owns, the other two being Royal Caribbean International and Silversea Cruises. When a cruise company operates more than one cruise line, people often wonder what makes them different. In this case, what makes the Celebrity Cruises line different?

What sets Celebrity Cruises apart from Royal Caribbean Group’s other offerings is it offers a more premium experience. While Celebrity Cruises may be a little more expensive on average, the experience will also be more elevated.

Celebrity Cruises has its headquarters in Miami, along with Royal Caribbean Group’s other brands.

The History of Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises was founded in 1988 by Chandris Group, a former Greece-based cruise line. Chandris Group initially operated cruises to Bermuda and characterized themselves as an option for the lower-end cruise passenger market.

Here’s how Chandris Group created Celebrity Cruises. In 1988, another large cruise line that operated in Bermuda, Home Lines, was bought out by another large cruise line.

They had a contract for two ships with Bermuda. But the company who bought them decided to withdraw their ships from this service.

Chandris Group was interested in these two new contracts up for grabs, but Bermuda would only award these contracts to upmarket cruise lines, which, as mentioned, Chandris Group was not.

So they created Celebrity Cruises and negotiated with the Government of Bermuda until they were awarded the contract. Once won, Chandris Group marketed the Celebrity Cruises line as a luxury cruise.

Celebrity Cruises started with one cruise ship, the Meridian, until a second cruise ship, the Horizon, entered service in 1990.

Chandris Group operated six cruise ships under Celebrity Cruises by the end of their run. In 1997, Chandris Group sold Celebrity Cruises to Royal Caribbean Group, which has been operating the cruise line ever since. However, you’ll still see hints of the cruise line’s Greek roots, as the logo contains the Greek letter “chi” for Chandris.

Cruises Offered By Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises offers cruises all over the world – to all seven continents. This means that there are no limits to where you can go.

Embarkation Delays for Royal Caribbean Sailing

Guests setting sail on Royal Caribbean International’s Serenade of the Seas today, February 18, 2023, were slightly delayed to starting their cruise, due to a medical debarkation that occurred during the previous sailing.

Ultimately, the ship was delayed one hour in leaving Tampa, Florida, but the rest of the 4-night sailing should not be impacted.

Embarkation Delayed for Medical Debarkation

The February 18, 2023, departure of Serenade of the Seas was delayed by one hour due to a medical debarkation from the previous cruise and a delayed return home.

This means that a passenger on the February 11, 2023 sailing, a 7-night Bahamas cruise with four ports of call in the island nation, needed to be debarked during that voyage in Miami, Florida. The Royal Caribbean cruise ship also had to remain docked at PortMiami until cleared to depart before the ship could return to Tampa.

To safeguard the privacy of the passenger and their family or traveling companions, no further details about the nature of the medical debarkation have been released.

Guests on the next cruise were contacted via email and messaging the day before embarkation to alert them to the brief delay. “This impacts your check-in window and our departure,” the email read. “We kindly ask that you arrive to the cruise terminal later than your original arrival window.”

Due to limited seating in the terminal, guests were asked to delay their arrival to Port Tampa Bay by 1.5 hours after their originally selected time, but before 3:30 p.m. to ensure all passengers could be processed and onboard by 4 p.m. in preparation for the 5 p.m. departure.

The ship was originally scheduled to depart Port Tampa Bay at 4 p.m. “Thank you for your cooperation and understanding,” the email concluded.

Embarkation Terminal Changed

In addition to the slight delay in boarding, guests were also advised that Serenade of the Seas was changing departure terminals at Port Tampa Bay and was now leaving from Terminal 2 rather than Terminal 6 as originally planned.

The change of terminals may have been to better facilitate emergency access to the ship, or simply to ensure the ship could dock more quickly.

While the terminals are close to one another, Terminal 2 is the first passenger terminal ships reach as they enter the port area and is immediately adjacent to the Ybor Turning Basin for faster docking.

No ships were scheduled to use Terminal 2 on Saturday, February 18. The terminal is most often used by Norwegian Cruise Line vessels.

Setting Sail

Serenade of the Seas departed Port Tampa Bay with no further delays. The sailing is a 4-night Western Caribbean cruise, calling on Cozumel, Mexico on Monday, February 20. That is the only port of call for the impacted cruise, which will also have two days at sea for guests to thoroughly explore and enjoy the vessel.

A Radiance-class ship weighing in at 90,090 gross tons, Serenade of the Seas can welcome 2,490 guests on board, with nearly 900 international crew members to provide excellent service no matter where the ship is sailing.

No further delays or schedule adjustments are expected for the cruise, but travelers should always remain flexible with their plans and expectations, as emergencies can arise at any time.

Norwegian Reaches Out to Passengers Regarding a Past Sailing

On February 17, Norwegian Cruise Line sent a letter to guests who are booked on the February 19 cruise aboard Norwegian Prima to inform them that two guests who sailed on the ship late last year were diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease after their travels.

Although the guests’ diagnosis was likely not associated with their time aboard the ship, the cruise line is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support their investigation efforts.

Norwegian Cruise Line Informs Guests

Norwegian Cruise Line has informed guests booked onboard the Norwegian Prima that two previous guests were diagnosed with Legionnaires Disease.

These two guests sailed onboard the vessel on the November 19, 2022 voyage, which visited Isla Roatan, Honduras; Harvest Cay, Belize; Costa Maya; and Cozumel, sailing roundtrip from Miami.

Norwegian Cruise Line states that the letter has been sent out due to an abundance of caution: “As you know, health and safety is our top priority. We operate to the highest public health and sanitation standards. We are reaching out to you today to inform you that it has come to our attention that two guests who sailed aboard Norwegian Prima on her 19, 2022 voyage were diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease following their travels.”

The letter continues by stating that the cruise line is working with the CDC to support their investigation efforts as part of their standard operating procedures, and testing is underway:

“Testing of devices and fixtures that use water, including hot tubs, showers, and faucets, is underway. It is not currently known whether the two passengers with Legionnaires’ disease were exposed from the ship’s water system or some other source. The investigation is ongoing.”

The letter provides further information about the disease and how to recognize its symptoms. Norwegian Cruise Line has also provided details on how to handle the situation if guests experience symptoms of the disease during their cruise.

Additionally, they have also outlined the steps guests should take if they exhibit symptoms within two weeks after their voyage onboard Norwegian Prima ends.

How do Cruise Ships Prevent and Deal With It?

Cruise ships must follow strict guidelines to prevent the growth and spread of Legionella bacteria on board. The CDC requires all vessels that sail to US ports to have a comprehensive water management program. This program must adhere to strict United States Public Health (USPH) guidelines, and all cruise ships must comply with these regulations.

One key element of this water management program is regular testing of ship water systems for Legionella. This testing is a critical aspect of the ship’s water management program and is required to prevent the growth and spread.

Additionally, all water lines on cruise ships are sanitized regularly. This sanitization process is part of the ship’s routine maintenance and is critical to maintaining a clean and healthy environment for passengers and crew members.

Of course, while prevention is key, that doesn’t mean that it will never occur onboard a cruise ship. In 2021, two guests were possibly infected onboard the Carnival Horizon.

It is implausible that Legionnaires’ disease was present onboard the 143,535 gross ton Norwegian Prima for several reasons. First, the ship is brand new; she entered service in August 2022, giving it little time to cultivate Legionella bacteria. This is important because Legionella bacteria can grow in water systems that are not properly maintained.

Also Read: 10 Reasons Why Cruise Ships Are Not Floating Petri Dishes

Secondly, the ship is heavily used, which doesn’t provide the ideal conditions for bacteria to grow. The bacteria require a specific environment to grow and spread, and a heavily used ship is not conducive to its growth. In fact, the constant use and flow of water on the ship’s plumbing systems can help prevent the growth.

Will This Impact the Upcoming Cruises?

Although the ongoing investigation is not expected to impact the guests’ onboard experience, Norwegian Cruise Line has provided guests booked on the February 19 cruise onboard Norwegian Prima with the necessary information.

If they experience symptoms during their cruise, they should immediately notify the onboard medical staff. Complimentary Legionella testing will be provided; if they test positive, all medical care will be provided free.

If guests experience symptoms in the two weeks after their cruise ends, they are advised to seek medical attention and show their doctor the letter provided by Norwegian Cruise Line. They should also request Legionella testing if they believe they may have contracted the disease.

Norwegian Prima is currently based out of Port Canaveral, Florida. The ship is operating a series of seven-night eastern Caribbean cruises.

Ports of call include Cozumel, Mexico; George Town, Grand Cayman; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas. From April 2, Norwegian Prima will begin a series of cruises from New York City to Bermuda.

Where Do Cruise Ships Go To Die? The Dismantling Process

After their extraordinary lives sailing passengers all over the world for exquisite cultural experiences, decommissioned cruise ships have to say farewell, too. Where do they go to be dismantled?

Why Do Cruise Ships Get Sent to Graveyards?

Before the pandemic, cruise ships stayed in commission for a lot longer. Larger cruise companies sold their older ships to smaller cruise lines. The smaller companies would refurbish them, change their names, and continue to book cruises full of passengers, significantly extending the ships’ lifespans.

However, when the pandemic hit, the cruise industry took a substantial hit. Smaller companies no longer bought older cruise liners from the large companies because no one was cruising, so there was no way to make the money back on the investment. Larger cruise lines started sending their fleets to ship graveyards and selling their parts for scrap, as there would be no voyages for months.

Carnival Fascination Cruise Ship Before Being Scrapped
Carnival Fascination Cruise Ship Before Being Scrapped

Luckily, cruise ship travel is back, guests are happy, and the cruise industry is recovering.

Still, modern cruise ships don’t live forever. Once old cruise ships have lived out their magnificence, power tools and heavy machinery in the ship-breaking yard crunch the hotel rooms, elegant restaurants, and terraces into bits and pieces. These pieces are usually composed of electronics, glass, wood, and other repurposable materials. The components then get carted away to be repurposed.

The meticulous detail required to pull these vessels apart is staggering, from the light bulbs and their fixtures to treadmills from the gyms – and even the pianos. Thankfully, the pianos, artwork, furniture, and exercise equipment can go to worthy new homes.

The Process of Taking Apart A Cruise Ship

The process of disassembling cruise ships necessitates thousands of skilled laborers who are familiar with cruise ship anatomy and how to organize parts of the vessel. It’s dangerous work, and with the process taking anywhere from eight months to a year, the workers do an excellent job of ensuring that there’s nothing left after the job is done.

The first pieces of a cruise ship to be dismantled are usually the communications and navigation equipment, as these are the most valuable pieces on board. Then, the guest furniture and beds are brought out, as they can usually be repurposed.

Where everything inside the ship goes is wide and variable, and there’s no real way of determining who collects it all. But environmentally-friendly cruise lines ensure that these materials are duly repurposed for public benefit.

Benefits and Hazards of Shipbreaking

There are several economic benefits to dismantling cruise ships.

One of the main benefits is the amount of steel recovered. A large part of a cruise ship is made of steel, and by recovering and reusing it, the countries where the ship breaking yards are located do not have to import steel.

Cruise Ship Scrapping

Because breaking cruise ships apart in this way allows companies to reuse and recycle many parts of the vessels, it provides a lot of raw materials that can be used to build other cruise ships. Various components, like oil, lubricants, and electrical wiring and equipment, can also be reused.

That said, there are many hazards to the death of a cruise ship. According to the NGO Shipbreaking Platform, it is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world and a job that not many people in the world are very familiar with. There are also significant environmental costs to consider.

Where Are Cruise Ship Scrap Yards Located?

There are ship scrap yards in various places, mostly in south Asia, but they do not all use the same methods. About half of all cruise ships go to a scrapyard in Alang, India. About 30% are sent to scrap yards in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and other scrap yards in India.

The rest go to scrap yards in China and Turkey. In addition to the one in Alang, India, some of the most prominent scrapyards are located in Gadan, Pakistan; Chittagong, Bangladesh; and Aliaga, Turkey.

It’s worth pointing out that the pandemic caused a considerable uptick in the number of cruise ships sent to these scrap yards. Since the pandemic, business in the Aliaga shipbreaking yard alone is up by 30%

Ship dismantling is a long and arduous process, done almost entirely by hand with no automation, which is the primary reason shipbreaking yards are located in countries like India, Pakistan, Turkey, Bangladesh, and China. Labor costs are lower in these parts of the world, and environmental laws are not as strict.

Conclusion

Decommissioning or breaking a cruise ship requires hundreds or thousands of workers and months of work. For the ship-breaking process, ships head to a shipyard and dock.

Celebrity Cruises Becomes First Line to Earn Coveted Award

Five ships operated by Celebrity Cruises received Star Awards from Forbes Travel Guide, marking the first time that the rating service and online publication has recognized an ocean cruise line with its top honor.

The 2023 resort-at-sea awards to Celebrity Cruises place the Royal Caribbean Group brand in good company, joining an exclusive collection of land-based luxury properties.

Two Edge-Class Ships Among Winners

This year, Forbes Travel Guide, the global rating authority for luxury hotels and resorts, spas, and restaurants, expanded its reviews to include ocean cruise ships for the first time. Celebrity Cruises is the only cruise line to have its ships listed in the prestigious Forbes Star Awards.

Ships honored with the award are the 3,405-guest, 130,818 gross ton Celebrity Apex, and the 2,908-guest, 129,500 gross ton Celebrity Edge, both Edge Class vessels; two Millennium Class ships, the 2,138-guest, 90,963 gross ton Celebrity Millennium, and the 2,158-guest, 90,940 gross ton Celebrity Summit; and one of the line’s Galapagos vessels, the 100-guest, 5,592 gross ton Celebrity Flora.

Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo said, “We always reach for the stars at Celebrity Cruises, whether it’s in our exceptional level of service, our innovative ship design, or the highest quality of relaxed luxury experiences we provide onboard.”

“To now be Star-rated multiple times over is such an incredible honor from the Forbes Travel Guide team. It’s confirmation that with our resorts at sea, our guests truly sail on the world’s best places to the world’s best places.”

According to Celebrity Cruises, the remainder of the line’s 15-ship fleet will be evaluated in the year ahead, except for the line’s smaller Galapagos ships.

A Set Of Exacting Standards

The Forbes Travel Guide ratings come from its professional inspectors who anonymously evaluate hotels, restaurants, spas, and now, ocean cruise ships, based on hundreds of exacting standards that determine the annual star ratings.

Forbes Travel Guide CEO Hermann Elger said, “Celebrity has delivered on Forbes Travel Guide’s standards time and time again during meticulous incognito inspections – offering guests experiences that rival those at the very best land-based properties. We congratulate Celebrity Cruises on this spectacular and historic accomplishment.”

A statement from Forbes said that a second wave of cruise lines will be announced later this year, and evaluations are underway on several ships earning their star rating for 2024.

Some of the onboard innovations cruisers find on Celebrity’s Edge Class ships include the industry’s first cantilevered floating bar called The Magic Carpet, its two-story Edge Villas staterooms with private plunge pools, and an outward-facing resort deck.

The line’s fourth Edge Class ship is under construction at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. The Celebrity Ascent will carry 3,260 guests and is scheduled to launch in late 2023.

Celebrity Cruises recently announced that two Greek brothers will co-captain Celebrity Ascent. Captains Dimitrios Kafetzis and Tasos Kafetzis, both veteran officers with the line, will share the helm of the new ship, on rotating three-month assignments onboard.

Norwegian Cruise Line Will Visit New Dominican Cruise Port

Norwegian Cruise Line will offer trips to Cabo Rojo-Pedernales, a new tourist destination, and cruise port in the Dominican Republic. The cruise line has included Cabo Rojo-Pedernales as one of the destinations for its January, March, and April 2024 itineraries, sailing from La Romana to Cabo Rojo, Curacao, Aruba, Bonaire, and more.

The Pedernales-Cabo Rojo Tourism Development Project is a project promoted by the Dominican government and aims to create a maximum capacity of over a million cruise ship passengers annually and will include the construction of four berths and various entertainment options.

Norwegian One of the First to Use Cabo Rojo

Norwegian Sky will be one of the first cruise ships to use the newly constructed cruise port at Cao Rojo in the Dominican Republic.

The 126-million-dollar development aims to allow guests to explore the region’s beautiful beaches, mountains, hidden caverns, and various wildlife species, including flamingos, manatees, sea turtles, and iguanas. Construction started in August last year, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

Norwegian Cruise Line said the following about the new port: “Trade the glittering resorts, bustling promenades and city centers of other Caribbean ports for the refreshingly untamed landscapes of Pedernales Province. Situated in the southwestern corner of the Dominican Republic near the border of Haiti, this region is a nature lover’s dream destination. Travel from the unspoiled beaches, lagoons and mangrove forests dotting the coastline to dramatic mountains and hidden caverns beckoning you inland. Whether you wish to hike, snorkel, kayak, bird watch or sunbathe, finding your slice of paradise in Pedernales Province is a breeze.”

So far, the cruise port has been included on six different sailings in January, February, March, and April 2024. During the cruises, which sail from La Romana in the Dominican Republic to Curacao, Aruba, Bonaire, Grenada, Barbados, St Lucia, and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, Cabo Rojo will be the first port of call after departure.

Sigmund Freund, the executive director of the General Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships, expressed his excitement about Norwegian Cruise Line’s inclusion of Cabo Rojo-Pedernales in its upcoming trips.

Sigmund Freund: “The fact that a company of the category of Norwegian Cruise Line has already identified Cabo Rojo and is scheduling it within its trips starting in January shows that the project promoted by the Government is a reality and that the potential of this project is already being seen internationally.”

Benefits for the Local Economy

The Puerto Cabo Rojo cruise port will become one of the most significant tourism players in the Caribbean, potentially bringing in millions of cruise guests to the region.

The port area will boast four berths, a water park, a spa, a beach area, shopping, and entertainment facilities, offering visitors a wide range of activities to enjoy during their stay.

The Pedernales-Cabo Rojo Tourism Development Project is a joint venture between the government and private companies, with the objective of transforming the Cabo Rojo-Pedernales region into a world-class tourist destination. Two massive hotels with 1100 rooms are also being built in the port area, which can accommodate overnight guests.

The investment in the Dominican Republic’s cruise infrastructure is a strategic move to make it the largest cruise destination in the Caribbean. The Puerto Cabo Rojo cruise port is expected to significantly increase the number of cruise ships and passengers visiting the Dominican Republic, creating numerous job opportunities and boosting the local economy.

Once complete, the port will have a maximum capacity of over a million cruise ship passengers annually. Together with existing cruise ports at Amber Cove, Isla Catalina, La Romana, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, and the capital of Santo Domingo, this will provide a much-needed boost to the economy.

Unexpected Passenger Earns Top Carnival Cruise Line Status

Many frequent cruisers eagerly set sail to earn loyalty points and benefits with their favorite cruise line, and one very privileged pooch is now among the top tier of Carnival Cruise Line’s VIFP program.

The retired U.S. Army service dog, Sarge, was honored aboard Carnival Celebration not only for his cruise line loyalty, but for his overall commitment to service.

A Carnival Diamond Dog

Sarge was aboard his 55th Carnival cruise when he was celebrated for reaching Diamond status in the cruise line’s VIFP (Very Important Fun Person) loyalty program. Appropriately, the sailing was on the brand new Carnival Celebration, a roundtrip, 7-night Eastern Caribbean sailing from Miami and visiting Amber Cove, San Juan, and St. Maarten that set sail on February 5, 2023.

It wasn’t in port that Sarge was really able to shine, however, but during the past guest loyalty party. At that time, he was awarded his official Diamond status for spending 200 days at sea, the highest level of recognition offered by the cruise line.

“I have shamelessly confessed that some of my favorite cruisers have four legs and wet noses,” said Lee Mason, Carnival Celebration’s Cruise Director. “This is a special story that I was honored to play my part in.”

Mason presented Sarge with his official VIFP status to recognize the dog’s loyalty, which is even recognized by higher-ups in the Carnival Cruise Line leadership team.

“What could be more fun than celebrating a beloved four-legged friend as a Diamond cruiser?” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We’re proud to celebrate and support veterans at Carnival, as the cruise line that carries the most service members, and I’m delighted to count Sarge among them.”

As a Diamond cruiser, Sarge is now entitled to all the honors and benefits of that elite rank as a “Very Important Fun Pooch” – priority check-in and boarding, a special event invitation from the Captain on each sailing, and unlimited wash and fold laundry service, and more.

At 14 years old, Sarge also has the distinction of being the youngest Diamond cruiser at his commemorative celebration with other VIFP guests.

About Sarge

Sarge is a Belgian Malinois (also known as a Belgian Shepherd), an athletic, highly intelligent breed of herding dog related to the more familiar German Shepherd and known for excellent service roles as detection dogs, guard dogs, police dogs, and search and rescue dogs. Belgian Malinois have served in the military through both World Wars, and continue to fulfill military roles today.

Sarge spent most of his life serving in the U.S. Army, and is now enjoying his retirement with his owner, Justin Marcum, Sr., who is also a Diamond VIFP guest aboard Carnival ships. To date, Sarge has sailed with Carnival 55 times!

Service Dogs on Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival welcomes working service dogs aboard all its ships, provided the animals are “legally defined and individually trained to meet disability-related needs.” Dogs must be updated on appropriate vaccinations, and meet the requirements of all ports of call for animals, which may differ from port to port.

Guests interested in sailing with their service dog should contact the Guest Access Department at Carnival Cruise Line to discuss the requirements and ensure their dog is eligible to begin building up their own loyalty points.
