Fourth Edge-Class Celebrity Cruise Ship Floats Out at Shipyard

Celebrity Cruises has reached a significant milestone with its fourth Edge-class cruise ship, Celebrity Ascent. The vessel, currently under construction, has floated out onto the water for the first time at the shipyard.

Celebrity Ascent Float Out

The cruise line, which Royal Caribbean owns, marks a major construction milestone for its upcoming new cruise ship, the Celebrity Ascent. The fourth Edge-class ship officially touched water for the first time at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, on Sunday, January 21.

This now marks a new phase in the construction process, with most of the exterior work completed. Workers at the yard and contractors will begin to shift their focus on the interior spaces, bringing the Celebrity Ascent to life just in time for delivery at the end of 2023.

“So much more than a ship, Celebrity Ascent will be the embodiment of a relaxed luxury resort at sea, and I can’t imagine a more exciting way to start the new year than by celebrating this important construction milestone,” said Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo.

“The collaboration between the shipyard and Celebrity teams continues to be extraordinary and I am grateful to all involved for their passion and expertise. Momentum and anticipation is quickly building for this ship and we’ll continue to share her progress and all that awaits our guests onboard this next installation in our groundbreaking, next-generation Edge Series,” Perlo added.

The last major construction milestone took place in August 2022, when Celebrity Cruises celebrated the keel-laying ceremony. Less than a year later, the ship’s substructure is already complete!

Over the coming months, the Celebrity Ascent will be moored at another location out of the dry dock as work continues. Still to come will be the much important sea trials to ensure the ship is sea-worthy. The delivery ceremony will then take place not long after, just before the maiden voyage.

Fourth Edge Class Cruise Ship

The Celebrity Ascent is scheduled to debut in December 2023. When it does, the ship will bring all the innovative features that sister ships Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Apex, and Celebrity Beyond have brought.

Celebrity Cruises’ newest vessel will have transformational accommodations, including two-story Edge Villa staterooms, allowing guests access to the ship’s suite-only Retreat Sun Deck. Just like the other ships in the class, there will also be Infinite Veranda staterooms that take advantage of what would be a balcony.

One of the most notable features of the Edge class is the Magic Carpet; located on just one side of the ship, it can become a platform that lowers to water level and can be used for things such as tendering. The venue can also be used as a bar and restaurant when not being lowered.

The ship also features the Nate Berkus-designed Sunset Bar and 30 different food and drink venues, including Le Petit Chef, the Eden Restaurant, and Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud.

Following a transatlantic journey from Europe to Florida, Celebrity Ascent will debut on December 3 out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with guests for the first time. The maiden voyage from the port will be a seven-night Western Caribbean cruise, including visits to St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and Purto Plata, before returning home on December 10, 2023.

The new 140,600 gross ton Celebrity cruise ship will continue to sail alternating seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries. The ship will be able to carry 3,260 passengers at double occupancy.

New MSC Cruise Ship Suffers Unforeseen Technical Issue

The MSC Seascape, a newly constructed cruise ship based out of Miami, has been forced to change its scheduled itinerary due to problems with one of its engines.

Captain Francesco Di Palma sent out a letter to guests explaining the situation, stating that the ship had been experiencing a technical issue with one engine, which had resulted in a power reduction and is affecting its speed.

As the problems could not be resolved, the vessel was forced to cancel its call to Ocho Rios in Jamaica and will be sailing at reduced speed for the remainder of the cruise.

MSC Seascape Limps Back to Ocean Cay

Despite the efforts of the technical team and specialized personnel brought on in Grand Cayman, an engine software issue has not been resolved onboard MSC Seascape, and the scheduled call to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, today, January 20, has been cancelled.

Although there were no issues with the vessel until the stop in Cozumel, Mexico, the problem started after departure from Mexico. The cruise ship arrived 4.5 hours late to Grand Cayman, where it was announced that the call to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, would be cancelled.

The Captain announced in his letter to guests that MSC would give a 50% refund on the cruise fare after the sailing and reimburse guests for any pre-booked shore excursions in Ocho Rios:

Captain Francesco Di Palma, in a letter delivered to guests onboard MSC Seascape on January 19: “As you are aware, MSC Seascape has been experiencing a technical issue with one of our engines, which has resulted in a power reduction and consequently is affecting our speed.”

“Despite the continuous efforts of our technical team combined with the expertise of the specialized technician who embarked today in Grand Cayman, I regretfully have to inform you that the issue has not been resolved, and we will be forced to cancel our scheduled call into Ocho Rios, Jamaica tomorrow.”

The plan is now to proceed with the vessel’s available speed to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve for an afternoon stop on Saturday, January 21, followed by the scheduled arrival into Miami on Sunday, January 22.

During an announcement on board, the Captain stated that the issue was an engine software problem that compromised one engine. However, several crew members supposedly stated that 3 out of four engines were not working due to the problem.

The Brand New MSC Seascape

The 170,412 gross-ton MSC Seascape was completed in 2022 and arrived in Miami in December of last year after the naming ceremony in New York City on December 7. The MSC Seascape sails seven-night Western and Eastern Caribbean cruises, which can be combined into 14-day cruises with an additional stop in Miami halfway through.

Ports of call include Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and, typically, Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on the Western Caribbean itineraries. In the eastern Caribbean, the vessel calls on San Juan, Puerto Rico, Nassau in the Bahamas, and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. Every voyage includes a stop at MSC’s private island resort Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

MSC’s gesture of offering a 50% refund on the cruise fare and reimbursement for pre-booked shore excursions in Ocho Rios is an excellent way to compensate for the inconvenience caused to the thousands of disappointed guests onboard.

The cruise line will investigate the cause of the engine problem and take necessary steps to prevent a similar incident. However, incidents such as these are not uncommon on new cruise ships. So far, the following cruise for MSC Seascape on January 22 is not affected. If this changes, Cruise Hive will keep you informed.

Who Owns Viking Cruises?

In this article, we’ll talk about this rich and robust cruise ship company with strong European roots and a foothold in its market niche.

The History of Viking Cruises

The history of Viking Cruises is a rich one. It is a company with over two decades of longevity and a sterling reputation in Europe and America. It has received ratings such as the Best River Cruise Line and the number one Ocean Cruise Line by Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers Choice Awards of 2022.

Founded in 1997 by Torstein Hagen, Viking Cruise Line is a smaller cruise ship company dedicated to cultural immersive and destination-focused journeys. Viking Cruises offers trips to all seven continents through rivers, oceans, and other expedition channels.

It entered the American market at the turn of the millennium, in 2000. Committed to its values of facilitating in-depth excursions for intrepid travelers, each Viking river ship offers deep immersion in its destinations, programs replete with music, art, cooking demonstrations, information-rich port talks, and guest lectures by cultural experts. Some significant rivers it covers include the Nile, Danube, Seine, Rhône, and most recently, the Mississippi River.

About Torstein Hagen

Torstein Hagen started Viking Cruises with only four ships, all purchased from Russia. He brought Viking Cruises into the American market in 2000 and established a sales and marketing office in Los Angeles, California.

Ever committed to careful yet robust expansion of his fleet and its offerings, in 2013, he introduced Viking Cruises to ocean expeditions with its first ocean vessel created in 2015. His ships have stunning verandas, and the ships most recent to the fleet are all named after planets. Viking has just begun to offer cruises on American rivers in 2022.

Torstein Hagen
Torstein Hagen

Hagen is a Scandinavian native, born in Norway, so his company’s name is apropos. His tenure in the cruising industry is vast. From 1980 to 1984, he held the esteemed position of CEO at Royal Viking Line, arguably the most prominent cruise line of its time.

Having also served on the board of directors for two other major cruise lines and as a management consultant for McKinsey and Co. (Europe), his knowledge of the business principles of managing a successful enterprise runs deep.

Hagen studied computers at the esteemed Wesleyan University, one of the preeminent liberal arts colleges in America. Having received one of the most prestigious university awards available, the Fulbright Scholarship, he also completed his master’s at the Norwegian Institute of Technology and studied Business Administration at Harvard University.

Features of Viking Cruise Ships

Viking Cruises’ ships are equipped and power-packed with many features and amenities, which differ between its river and ocean ships.

River Ships

All Viking Cruises’ longships – its river ships – have an abundance of stateroom categories and two-room suites with verandas overlooking the majesty of the ships’ surroundings. Each Viking longship is identical and includes a restaurant, bar and lounge, sun deck, and library.

A separate terrace for al fresco dining (open-air dining) boasts elegant Scandinavian designs that promote environmentally-friendly features such as solar panels, an onboard garden, and high-efficiency hybrid engines.

Viking River Cruise

For the new Mississippi River ship, environmental consciousness was key to its construction and vision. It is designed to maximize energy efficiency and minimize emissions expenditures. It’s a diesel-electric hybrid system (better than most hybrid cars!), electric hydraulic units, and an exhaust scrubbing system that significantly reduces sound and emissions. This ship also has expansive windows and views.

Ocean Ships

These luxurious vessels are equipped with the connoisseur’s paradise of amenities and features. Every stateroom has a private veranda, several restaurants to choose from – including fine dining, a Nordic spa, and many other cultural resources and gems to make ship goers’ visits indelible memories.

One of the unique features of Viking Cruises’ ships – and indeed, borne of its philosophy of cultural immersion – is that they dock at ports for travelers to maximize their time off-ship. From Northern Europe (including an emphasis on Scandinavia) to the Mediterranean and everything in between, Torstein Hagen has designed a modern luxury travel fleet to enrich and inspire.

Lastly, Viking’s ocean ships are also deliberately engineered to respect the environment as much as possible. Their internal mechanics have won the Best Energy Efficient Design Index (EEDI) in its class. Each Viking ocean cruise ship has a closed-loop exhaust system to migrate and dispose of pollutants safely.

Conclusion

Viking Cruises is an exceptional cruise ship line because it cares so much about its visitors being immersed in the culture of their selected destinations. Offering a full boutique of restaurants featuring cuisine local to the countries it visits, it has both Viking river cruises and ocean cruises replete with verandas, haute couture, and educational offerings.

With hybrid engines, efficient hydraulics and pollutant disposal systems, solar panels, and more, Hagen has built an enterprise based on sound principles and superior attention to detail. Go figure that Viking Cruises has earned coveted top spots in reader’s choice magazines.

MSC Cruises Launches New Sustainability Global Campaign

MSC Cruises launched a new global brand campaign, meant to educate consumers on the importance of sustainable vacationing and the critical role sustainability will play in the company’s future.

The campaign—“Discover the future of cruising”—spans more than 30 countries with television ads and outdoor, print, digital, and social media.

Focusing on Environmental Performance

A new concept from MSC Cruises, which has been released worldwide today, January 19, illustrates the vision the cruise line has for future cruise vacations by showcasing the fleet’s environmental performance alongside glimpses of life on board.

The program includes several different factors. One of the main factors is the cruise line’s marine conservation program, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Once an industrial sand excavation site, the cruise line transformed Ocean Cay into a private island destination surrounded by crystal blue waters that are home to critical marine species and coral habitats.

A TV special focusses on the unique environmental technologies and solutions on board the 215,863 gross tons, 6,762 passenger MSC World Europa, MSC Cruises’ first LNG-powered and most environmentally advanced ship to date. The special was filmed onboard the cruise ship over the last couple of months.

MSC World Europa
MSC World Europa

The campaign further showcases the cruise line’s broader commitment to the environment and progress made on sustainability across its fleet of 21 ships alongside the wider Cruise Division of MSC Group.

“Already cruising is one of the best holiday options for consumers today, but many of our guests don’t realize that it has important sustainability aspects as well,” said Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division of MSC Group.

“We have long had a steadfast focus on sustainable and environmentally responsible business practices and on protecting guests, employees, and the communities in which we operate.

MSC Cruises works closely with tour operators and industry partners to support and promote sustainable tourism practices. The MSC Cruises shore excursion team works with tour operators worldwide to identify activities founded on strong sustainability principles.

Known as ‘Protectours,’ these excursions are designed to educate guests. Around 70% of Protectours include low-impact transportation—including walking, cycling, or kayaking—and many make a direct contribution to the environment by supporting species or habitat protection.

“Today more than ever, brands like MSC Cruises recognize the vital importance of the environment and a healthy and viable planet, and this is why we think it is important for us to take a leadership role and make our sustainability commitments a key element of our discourse,” Vago continued.

Leading the Industry in Sustainable Cruising

MSC Cruises is well on its way to meeting the International Maritime Organization’s objective of a 40% carbon reduction by 2030, having improved its fleet carbon efficiency by 35% since 2008. The cruise line and the broader Cruise Division of MSC Group remain committed to achieving the net-zero emissions target for marine operations by 2050.

The “Discover the future of cruising” campaign is an essential step for MSC Cruises as it continues to lead the way in sustainable cruising. It has taken sustainability to a new level with low-noise hull designs that protect wildlife, advanced waste processing systems, intelligent ventilation and air conditioning systems, innovative LED lighting systems, and much more.

The commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility will become increasingly important as the cruise industry continues to grow and evolve. MSC Cruises’ new global brand campaign indicates that they are taking this responsibility seriously and are committed to leading the way in sustainable cruising.

Over the last years, we have seen several initiatives showing how the cruise industry seems to have gotten the message that emissions and pollution need to come down. However, achieving the goals for 2050 will not be enough. The industry will need to go much further to be seen as a sustainable vacation option in the future.

Winds Cause Carnival Cruise Ship to Skip Port of Call

Windy conditions have made it unsafe for Carnival Pride to make its scheduled call to Costa Maya, Mexico on Thursday, January 19, 2023, and instead, the ship will be spending the day at sea.

While this will understandably be disappointing to guests eager to explore the culturally-rich destination, safety is always the first priority for any cruise ship.

Costa Maya Cancelled for Carnival Pride

Carnival Pride is currently sailing a 6-night Western Caribbean itinerary roundtrip from Port of Tampa. The ship departed on Sunday, January 15, and has already called at Cozumel, Mexico and Belize City, Belize. Costa Maya was to have been the ship’s last port of call before a day at sea and the return to Tampa on Saturday, January 21.

Due to high winds, however, the Spirit-class vessel has been unable to safely dock, and will instead be spending Thursday at sea rather than at Costa Maya.

Carnival Pride was scheduled to dock at approximately 8 a.m. Winds in Costa Maya are steady at 9-10 miles per hour (14-16 kilometers per hour) from the south-southeast.

While the wind speed is not necessarily shocking, higher gusts could make the conditions much more severe and impede navigation as the ship approaches the dock. Furthermore, the direction of the winds could push the ship into the dock, potentially causing damage either to the vessel or the pier structure.

Safety is always the primary concern for cruise ships, including the overall safety of the vessel as well as the safety of guests and crew members.

Any shore tours booked through Carnival Cruise Line will automatically be refunded back to guests’ accounts. Onboard, the cruise ship’s Fun Squad and entertainment staff will be putting together additional activities, games, and contests for the unexpected day at sea, and the ship’s casino will be open as well.

Other Ships in Costa Maya

While Carnival Pride is unable to make the call to Costa Maya, Princess Cruises’ Sky Princess has safely docked as scheduled. The two ships, however, have significant size differences.

Carnival Pride weighs in at 88,500 gross tons, with 12 guest decks to welcome and entertain as many as 2,124 passengers at double occupancy, with 910 crew members.

Sky Princess, on the other hand, is a Royal-class ship and the largest in Princess Cruises’ fleet, weighing in at 145,281 gross tons with 19 guest decks. The ship can host 3,660 passengers at double occupancy, with a crew of 1,346 international team members.

Because Sky Princess is a much heavier ship, she will not be as affected by the current wind speeds in Costa Maya, and will be able to dock more safely. Sky Princess will be in Costa Maya today from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Other Weather Cancellations

Every cruise line, and every captain of an individual cruise ship, assesses safety conditions carefully when considering any itinerary adjustments. While it is always the intention to keep planned itineraries and port schedules intact, safety is paramount and will always be protected first.

It is not unusual for cruise ships to skip ports of call based on weather. Just recently, several vessels in The Bahamas altered itineraries due to widespread poor weather and high winds, causing missed days at Nassau and nearby private island destinations. Similar poor conditions have also caused changed itineraries in Australia and New Zealand in recent weeks.

Even something as simple as fog can cause delays when visibility is severely impeded, making it difficult for cruise ships to navigate into channels and harbors safely. This happened at the beginning of the month for three ships returning to Port of TampaBrilliance of the Seas, Celebrity Apex, and Norwegian Dawn, all of which were delayed approximately 10 hours due to heavy fog.

No further delays are expected for Carnival Pride, which should return to Port of Tampa on Saturday.

Disney Announces New Fireworks and More for Silver Anniversary

Disney Cruise Line reaches a momentous milestone this year as it celebrates 25 years of cruising – the silver anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, the cruise line is planning a number of “Silver Anniversary at Sea” specials, including a new fireworks show from its vessels, delicious menu treats, exclusive souvenirs, and more.

Light Up the Night for 25 Years of Disney Cruises

Disney Cruise Line first set sail on July 30, 1998 with the inaugural cruise of Disney Magic, a short sailing from Port Canaveral to The Bahamas. In 25 years, the fleet has grown to five phenomenal ships offering a wide range of itineraries around the globe. To celebrate the traditional silver anniversary, Disney Cruise Line is planning a range of special onboard events and other commemorative options for guests to enjoy.

The most brilliant and visible celebration of this spectacular anniversary is a new signature fireworks show. Fireworks have been an at-sea staple for Disney Cruise Line since the beginning, but this new show will be an evening extravaganza set to iconic Disney music and a new signature song created especially for this year’s festivities.

The new show will be featured on most Bahamas, Caribbean, and Mediterranean cruises from May through September 2023, though weather conditions can always impact show performances.

Guests already familiar with Disney’s fireworks at sea should note that this special anniversary show will be a second night of pyrotechnic brilliance, in addition to the Pirate Night fireworks that are a long-standing favorite of many guests.

Toasting the Silver Anniversary

Another new event for all guests to enjoy to celebrate the cruise line’s 25th anniversary will be a special “Silver Anniversary at Sea” toast with the ship’s captain and cruise director. This will be held one evening on each sailing, and will be a glittering event in the ship’s atrium.

Also in attendance will be Captain Mickey Mouse and Captain Minnie Mouse, in their new teal, blue, and white attire that emphasizes their connection to the sea.

Part of the festivities will also be the “Silver Anniversary at Sea” signature theme song, the lyrics and tune of which have not yet been revealed.

Exclusive Loyalty Gifts

All Castaway Club members – Disney Cruise Line’s loyalty program – who set sail during the “Silver Anniversary at Sea” will receive an exclusive limited-edition framed art print to commemorate their celebratory sailing (one per stateroom, while supplies last).

The design was created by Disney artist Joe Kaminski, whose work is featured in The Art of Disney galleries, Disney resort hotels, and Disney Cruise Line ships, and showcases a nautically-attired Mickey Mouse welcoming guests, with a whimsical confetti overlay.

This loyalty perk comes as Disney Cruise Line is set to unveil the newest tier in its loyalty program, what will be the “Pearl” tier guests can reach after 25 Disney Cruise Line vacations.

When to Sail for the Silver Anniversary

Disney’s “Silver Anniversary at Sea” sailings are only offered for a limited time from May through September 2023. Exact sailing dates vary by ship, and each vessel is offering a variety of itineraries as part of the festivities.

  • Disney Wish – Port Canaveral departures from May 1 through September 8, sailing to The Bahamas
  • Disney Fantasy – Port Canaveral sailings from May 6 through September 6, with both Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises
  • Disney Dream – Departures from multiple homeports (Southampton, Rome, Barcelona, Miami) from May 7 through September 17
  • Disney Wonder – Alaska itineraries departing from Vancouver from May 15 through September 11
  • Disney Magic – Bahamas and Caribbean sailings from Miami from May 25 through September 4

SpaceX’s Starlink Rolls Out Across Carnival Cruise Brands

Carnival Corporation, the world’s largest cruise company, announced an agreement with SpaceX’s Starlink to provide faster and more reliable Wi-Fi on its ships. The roll-out of Starlink will begin with the Carnival Cruise Line and AIDA Cruises ships.

The company then plans to expand to several of the company’s other cruise brands, including Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, P&O Cruises (Australia), Costa Cruises, P&O Cruises (UK), and Cunard.

Fast Internet Finally Comes to Carnival

After struggling to meet the demand for a significant amount of time, with several ships losing connection during cruises, the wait was for Carnival Corporation to follow Royal Caribbean and switch to Starlink. Today, January 18, the cruise company finally announced the two parties had signed a new agreement.

Installation of the satellite connection packages started in December onboard the Carnival Cruise Line and AIDA Cruises ships and is expected to roll out further across all brands soon.

The agreement is part of Carnival Corporation’s ongoing plan to provide guests and crew across its cruise brands with the best available Wi-Fi experience at sea. In the last few years, the company has nearly tripled fleetwide bandwidth, yet WiFi problems seem to continue. In a time when the internet has become a basic necessity instead of a luxury, it was time that Carnival Corporation took action.

“For many of our guests, it has become more and more important to maintain the type of connectivity at sea that they’ve become accustomed to at home, and of course to share the unforgettable experiences of their cruise with friends and family,” said Josh Weinstein, CEO of Carnival Corporation.

“We are in the business of delivering happiness, and Starlink makes it as easy as possible for our guests to share all their great moments and memories, giving them even more joy out of their cruise vacation.”

The move by Carnival Corporation is a massive step forward and one that will be welcomed with open arms by those sailing onboard one of the Carnival Cruise Line or other brands’ ships in 2023.

Starlink is the leader in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology providing fast and more reliable Wi-Fi on a global scale. The added bandwidth will give the brands the capabilities and flexibility to introduce new guest services and features and help boost operational functions like onboard equipment monitoring and real-time communications between ship and shore teams.

“High-speed, low-latency broadband internet is critical in our modern age, and we’re excited to provide Carnival Cruise Line and AIDA’s guests an internet experience that makes their travel even more enjoyable,” said Jonathan Hofeller, vice president of Starlink sales for SpaceX.

Starlink

“In even the most remote waters, guests onboard Carnival Corporation ships will be able to share real-time updates with friends and family.”

The performance of Starlink Maritime is predicted to surpass that of many traditional home internet service packages, with speeds ranging from 100-350 Mbps for downloads and 20-40 Mbps for uploads and low latency. This is a significant improvement over regular Starlink terminals, which typically provide download speeds of around 100 Mbps but can vary widely depending on the location and access to the signal.

The Maritime connection is expected to be vastly superior to the land-based connections, mainly because the system uses a dual satellite connection.

Guest and Crew Experience

The new agreement with Starlink is set to transform the guest and crew connectivity experience with faster internet and more capacity onboard ships. Guests can share photos and videos, stream movies and live sporting events and enjoy other content onboard with a reliable connection, such as, or better than, they would have at home.

Adding Starlink’s innovative technology to the company’s existing connectivity platform will also help the crew stay in touch with friends and loved ones.

“Importantly, adding Starlink’s innovative technology to the company’s existing connectivity platform will also help our amazing crew stay in touch with friends and loved ones,” Weinstein continued.

Carnival Corporation’s agreement with SpaceX’s Starlink is a significant step towards enhancing the guest and crew connectivity experience on its ships. Guests onboard the Carnival Cruise Line ships will soon notice the difference in speed onboard the ships as the cruise line brings the systems online.

More From Cruise Hive

What and if Carnival Cruise Line will charge for using the new WiFi connectivity is unknown. Several companies have chosen to offer the service for free, as it is significantly less expensive than the older satellite systems. Elon Musk revealed his companies previously paid up to 150,000 dollars per month for a reliable internet connection. Starlink Maritime has a $10,000 installation price tag and a $5000 monthly fee.

Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Hurtigruten, and SeaDream Yacht Club were among the first to switch to Starlink Maritime Internet last year. The system was tested onboard the Norwegian Cruise Line cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway, and American Cruise Lines also announced the new system earlier this month.

Carnival Cruise Line Remains Confident in E-Muster Safety Briefing

While different cruise lines are making adjustments to safety briefings as best suit their operational needs, Carnival Cruise Line remains committed to the e-muster safety briefing or virtual mustering.

While rumors have persisted that the cruise line may be returning to the more traditional in-person group muster, Carnival has confirmed that the new, updated drill remains in place.

E-Muster to Remain

In addressing online rumors about the return of in-person muster drills from February 1, 2023, Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald has confirmed that Carnival will continue to e-muster and noted the success of the new drill in demonstrating real-world application of the safety procedures.

“The new way of doing the drill shows guests where to go in a real emergency and how to wear the life jacket,” Heald said. “In a real emergency that is what guests have to do and from there listen to the Captain, listen to the crew. Trust the captain, trust the crew.”

Carnival E-Muster Drill

The e-muster drill was initially implemented as part of pandemic precautions to minimize crowding and promote social distancing. Rather than bringing all guests together in close quarters at muster stations to go over safety information, the e-muster drill has guests view safety videos either online or through the Carnival Hub app prior to setting sail.

Once on board, guests report to their muster station at their leisure, where their Sail and Sign cards are scanned to record their attendance. At that time, a crew member confirms that this is the guests’ muster station, and a life jacket demonstration is made if necessary. Young children will also be fitted with wristbands printed with their muster station.

The new drill takes just a few minutes, and if guests report to their muster station right away, might only take a few moments. The old drill, by comparison, could take 30-45 minutes, with delays if not all guests report to the proper station or if there are late arrivals to the cruise terminal.

Another component of the drill is sounding the ship’s horn in the emergency signal – seven short blasts and one long blast – which is still done just before sail away, so all guests hear the sequence. At that time, food and beverage operations shut down and there are no ongoing activities, as this is the safety drill for crew members.

“Safety is always the top of our list,” Heald said. “Your safety, the safety of the crew and ultimately the safety of the ship herself will always be most paramount.”

Encouraging Guests to Muster

Many Carnival guests report to their muster stations in the first few minutes of their cruise vacation, and crew members are on hand at the gangway to help direct guests to the proper station.

The new drill, however, does permit some flexibility in when guests choose to muster. Some guests prefer to enjoy lunch first, while others wait until they have been able to visit their staterooms – which are generally open at 1:30 p.m. – to drop off luggage, then they can proceed to their muster station unencumbered.

Because the safety drill is essential and all guests must participate and complete their mustering before the ship sets sail, Carnival Cruise Line takes several steps to encourage mustering.

First are the crew members at the gangway encouraging mustering as guests embark. The ship’s cruise director will also make periodic announcements to remind guests to muster. As the time for sail away approaches, the last few guests’ names may be called over the intercom for muster reminders.

The cruise line also has it set up that after ordering two drinks, guests’ Sail and Sign accounts are locked and they cannot order any additional beverages until after completing the muster drill.

These methods have largely proved effective, and the vast majority of Carnival guests muster successfully and appreciate the ease and efficiency of the e-muster.

Future Changes Possible?

While Heald does admit that he is “not in a position to never say never,” it seems unlikely that Carnival will revert to the old-style group mustering.

“I don’t know if it will ever change or not but what I can say is that we are not returning to the previous way of doing this next month or indeed, at all,” Heald clarified recently.

These rumors do occur regularly, and notably, every cruise line has to make the decisions and implement procedures that work best for their operations. Disney Cruise Line, for example, transitioned back to the more traditional group drill in November 2022, and other cruise lines may follow if that option works best for their crew and guests.

So long as guests continue to comply with safety procedures and those procedures are deemed effective by maritime authorities, Carnival’s e-muster is likely here to stay.

In addition, the Knicks and MSC Cruises will partner on a sustainability initiative that will provide a donation to an Ocean Conservation Cause for every three-pointer made by the Knicks this season. The amount donated throughout the year will be shown on the Knicks Digital Channels and Gardenvision.

Finally, MSC Cruises will be displayed on the digital boards outside of Madison Square Garden, which will be visible to the millions of people who walk by Madison Square Garden daily.

Partnership to Continue Onboard

The collaboration between the Knicks and MSC Cruises will extend beyond just Knicks games at Madison Square Garden. This spring, the Knicks will host a Jr. Knicks clinic on the basketball court of the MSC Meraviglia during its inaugural visit to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal.

The clinic will feature basketball drills, skills training, and games led by the Jr. Knicks coaching staff. Attendees will also have the chance to meet with Knicks alums and receive branded giveaways from the Knicks and MSC Cruises.

MSC Cruises will also be the Official Cruise Line Partner for the Westchester Knicks, a minor league team that plays its games in the G-Leaugue, and the Knicks e-sports 2K team, Knicks Gaming. This will include LED signage at Westchester Knicks home games and virtual on-court signage at Knicks Gaming home games.

MSC Cruises has become more heavily involved in sports sponsorships in the last two years. The cruise company is also the official cruise partner for Formula 1 racing.
