All April Sailings Cancelled for Ships Stuck in the Middle East

With the tensions in the Middle East continuing and no signs yet that the critical Strait of Hormuz will reopen to permit vessels to safely exit the Arabian Gulf, Celestyal Cruises has made the difficult decision to cancel another month of sailings for its two vessels.

Now, all sailings for Celestyal Discovery and Celestyal Journey through April 2026 are cancelled, a total of 11 cruises between the two ships. The first planned Mediterranean departures for the vessels will now be May 1 and May 2, respectively.

“Our priority remains the safety and confidence of our guests, crew and partners,” said Lee Haslett, Chief Commercial Officer of Celestyal. “While we know this will be disappointing, making this decision now provides greater clarity and flexibility for those affected.”

Cruise Hive has previously reported on cancellations for both ships, as Celestyal Discovery remains in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) while Celestyal Journey is in Doha, Qatar.

At this time, all guests and “non-operational” crew members have been safely disembarked from both ships and the vessels are ready to leave the region as soon as they have authorization to safely do so. Neither ship is currently threatened in any way, nor has either vessel sustained any reported damage.

All impacted guests in this latest round of cancellations have the choice of a full refund for their cruises or they may accept a future cruise credit to rebook if they prefer.

If no further cancellations are necessary, Celestyal Discovery‘s first sailing for her summer Mediterranean season will be a 3-night Greek Islands cruise roundtrip from Athens with visits to Mykonos, Ephesus, Patmos Island, Crete, and Santorini.

Celestyal Journey‘s first sailing would be a 7-night Adriatic voyage, also from Athens, with port visits in Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, and Italy.

Both ships are scheduled to remain in the Mediterranean into November before they should return to the Arabian Gulf for another winter in the Middle East. As of now, those plans are unchanged, but the entire situation is fluid and further cancellations or adjustments may yet be necessary.

“We remain focused on returning to service in the Mediterranean as soon as it is safe to do so,” said Haslett.

Why Cancel a Full Month of Cruises?

The cancelled sailings are roughly 2,000 miles from the troubled waters of the Middle East, so why are they cancelled?

Unfortunately, both Celestyal Discovery and Celestyal Journey are currently unable to reposition to their Mediterranean homeport of Piraeus (Athens). To reach Athens, the ships need to sail from the Arabian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, around the Arabian Peninsula, through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, and on to Athens.

In total, that route covers roughly 4,400 miles. At an average speed of 20 knots (23 miles per hour), it would take each ship more than eight full days of nonstop sailing to reach Athens.

Of course, maintaining that high a speed for so long is impossible without the necessary changes for navigation, weather, refueling, canal transits, and other operational needs.

Once the ships reach Athens, it will also be necessary to bring crew members back aboard to full staffing, as well as to reprovision the ships for their new sailings.

Despite the inconvenience of cancellations, safety is always the primary consideration, and Celestyal Cruises will safeguard its guests, crew members, and ships to the best of its abilities.

Port Canaveral Announces Artemis II Impact on Operations

One of the most historic events of the decade is just two days away and cruise guests at Port Canaveral may have a front row seat. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Artemis II mission, the first to send humans to the moon in more than 50 years, is scheduled to launch on Wednesday evening, April 1, 2026.

Port Canaveral has released its plan for the high-publicity launch, including what parking is available for visitors and now traffic flow may be impacted.

The two-hour launch window opens at 6:24 p.m. and as it happens, no cruise ships will be in Port Canaveral on Wednesday. This is not a deliberate scheduling plan, just a coincidence after the launch was initially delayed from its first attempt in early March.

Nevertheless, cruise guests who may arrive on the aptly-named Space Coast a day or two before their sailings may want to take advantage of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

To see the launch, guests will need to be mindful of traffic and the expected surge of both local and distant visitors hoping to witness the launch that will send four astronauts around the moon for the first time since Apollo 17 in December 1972.

Day passes for Port Canaveral’s Jetty Park on the south side of the channel are sold out, and no other public parking options are available on launch day. Traffic is expected to be heavy and anyone headed toward the beach to view the launch should plan for extra driving time.

Similarly, port employees and vendors will likewise need to adjust their daily plans to accommodate the extra traffic.

The port has confirmed that all cruise terminal parking garages and surface lots are for cruise guests only. No day parking or visitor passes are permitted.

Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) deputies will be on site for parking enforcement, traffic control, and security operations. Marine units will also be patrolling waterways around Port Canaveral, and a strict no-fly zone will be in effect.

If cruise guests are staying at local hotels on the beach, they will have prime viewing positions for the launch, no parking needed beyond their hotel lot.

Can You See the Launch From a Cruise Ship?

While no ships will be in Port Canaveral on Wednesday, it is possible that cruise guests might get an unprecedented view if the launch is delayed.

Delays are not unusual, particularly for new and extremely complicated missions. Poor weather, mechanical concerns, equipment failures, and other factors could all cause a delay or cancellation.

Cruise Hive has even reported previously on ships impacting launch operations, such as when Harmony of the Seas inadvertently strayed into restricted waters and caused a rocket launch scrub in January 2022.

Should Artemis II not launch as planned on Wednesday, there are additional launch windows each evening from April 2-6. On each day, the 120-minute launch window does get later in the evening, by which time any ships departing Port Canaveral would have moved well out to sea.

On Thursday, April 2, Carnival Freedom would have a front-row seat for the launch, while five different ships – Utopia of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, Norwegian Joy, Disney Wish, and Disney Fantasy – would have prime viewing on Friday, April 3.

Six different cruise ships are in port on Saturday, April 4, followed by four vessels on Sunday, April 5 and four on Monday, April 6.

If cruise guests aren’t able to see a launch as it happens, pre- or post-cruise tours to Kennedy Space Center, whether arranged through the cruise line or independently organized, can be a great way to enjoy the awe and wonder of the space program.

Other local museums near Port Canaveral and even the splashdown monument on Grand Turk are other ways space travel can be part of any cruise vacation.

A scary situation unfolded at the Port of San Diego on the morning of March 30, 2026, while Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wonder was in the California port.

ABC 10 News San Diego reported that the B Street Cruise Terminal in downtown San Diego was put into a lockdown at approximately 7 a.m. due to an “unspecified bomb threat.” Disney was not allowed to disembark passengers during this time.

Harbor Police Sgt. Jose Torres told the news outlet that a port employee received the threat just before the lockdown and that both officers and Explosive Detection Canine Units were brought in to investigate out of an “abundance of caution.”

About two hours later, at approximately 9 a.m., police officers determined that the cruise terminal was safe and the disembarkation process was allowed to continue normally.

No further details have been released about the threat and where it came from, but Cruise Hive will continue to monitor for updates in this developing situation.

The Impact to Disney Wonder

As of the time of publication, cruise tracking data shows the 2,700-guest Disney Wonder is docked in San Diego as the ship completes the normal disembarkation and embarkation process.

The 84,130-gross ton ship had just returned from a 3-night sailing to Ensenada and is expected to set sail at around 3:45 p.m. PST on a 4-night voyage to Catalina Island and Ensenada.

Aside from a slightly delayed disembarkation, Cruise Hive has not been notified of any other impact to the Disney vessel’s operations.

The delay also wasn’t very significant, as disembarkation doesn’t even typically begin until around 8 a.m. for the earliest “Express Walk-Off” option, and the port resumed normal operations around 9 a.m.

And even if embarkation or departure is slightly delayed, the first scheduled call to Catalina on March 31 is very close, with the island only around 70-80 nautical miles away from San Diego.

After completing this sailing, Disney Wonder will continue to operate 3- to 4-night Baja-bound cruises from San Diego until May of 2026, when she will reposition to Vancouver to begin the 2026 Alaska season.

Are Bomb Threats Common?

Bomb threats at cruise ports are relatively rare, but when they do happen, they are treated as legitimate emergencies until authorities can prove otherwise.

Thankfully, the most recent bomb threats Cruise Hive has reported on before now were also false alarms. However, they were still very inconvenient and a gross misuse of emergency resources.

For example, an unfounded bomb threat in PortMiami on March 3, 2025, led to increased traffic and delays in what was already a congested day with five ships in the port.

Later in the year on August 9, 2025, P&O Cruises’ Ventura began evacuating guests due to a bomb hoax in Southampton, UK.

As bomb hoaxes cause significant delays and waste emergency resources, people who knowingly call in fake threats may face criminal charges for their actions.

Section 35 of Title 18 of the US Department of Justice’s Criminal Resource Manual, commonly known as the “bomb hoax” statute, provides civil and criminal penalties for knowingly conveying false information regarding attempts to destroy or damage aircraft, vehicles, or related facilities.

The criminal felony provision allows for penalties of up to five years in prison, a $5,000 fine, or both.

Of course, it’s still important to speak up if you see something suspicious. People who make reports in good faith will not be penalized if the threat turns out to be a false alarm.

Port of Barcelona Fire Delays Cruise Operations for Multiple Ships

Every cruise traveler who has attended a muster station drill or heard a safety briefing knows that fire is the biggest danger to cruise ships. That danger turned very real for three cruise ships at Port of Barcelona on Sunday, March 29, 2026 as a fire broke out and quickly spread, causing delays for guests and confusion in the terminals.

MSC Orchestra, MSC Armonia, and Costa Toscana were all in port at the time of the blaze, though none of the cruise ships was directly involved.

According to Inspain News, the fire broke out at the Grimaldi terminal area near Pont D’Europa, the bridge leading to the cruise terminals. A truck caught fire first and the flames spread to roughly 20 freight semi-trailers and containers nearby.

To clarify, the containers were parked in temporary storage at the time. They were not on a ship and no vessels were involved in the fire.

The first report of the fire was at roughly 1:15 p.m., and emergency response was immediate, with 10 crews and a fireboat responding to the alert. Water tankers, a ladder truck, an ambulance, and fire engines were among the assets that responded.

There were multiple reports of explosions related to the fire, though other witnesses only noted the extensive smoke.

The blaze was brought under control after about three hours, but continued to burn into the evening before being fully extinguished.

The strong black smoke plumes created by the fire caused dozens of calls to emergency services, while the Port of Barcelona implemented its Internal Emergency Plan in case further response was necessary. Because of that readiness, crews were well-prepared if the fire had spread.

For cruise guests, the emergency response resulted in various delays and temporary closures in the cruise terminals and along access roads. Fortunately, additional measures were not necessary in this incident.

No dangerous goods were present in the impacted trailers or containers and no toxic contamination has been reported. Thankfully, no injuries were reported related to the fire.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but the investigation is ongoing. Port operations have resumed and no further cruise ships are affected.

Fires are Always a Risk

Fires are always a risk on cruise ships, and surprisingly, they happen more often than many guests realize.

Small fires in shipyards or dry docks might cause damage to vessels that are currently out of service. These types of fires might also delay repairs, refurbishments, or vessel construction.

Fires onboard while ships are at sea can be much more damaging, but are quickly contained and extinguished.

Cruise Hive has reported on a number of fires, including a small fire aboard Disney Treasure in February 2025 and other similar small engine room and laundry room fires affecting vessels from different lines. Typically, such small fires do not significantly impact onboard operations.

In May 2022 and again in March 2024, Carnival Freedom suffered dramatic fires that damaged her iconic “whale tail” funnel. The second fire happened just months after the first damaged funnel had been replaced during a scheduled dry dock. For both of those incidents, multiple sailings were cancelled while repairs were made.

It isn’t just aboard ships that fires can impact cruise vacations, however. In January 2019, the popular private island destination of Princess Cays was devastated by a fire, resulting in port visit cancellations until the destination could be restored.

MSC Redeploys MSC World Europa Due to Escalating Middle East Tensions

As it’s become clear that the escalating conflict with Iran isn’t resolving anytime soon, MSC Cruises has decided to cancel MSC World Europa’s winter season in the Middle East.

The first World-class ship will now be in the French Antilles for the upcoming winter season, far from the war-torn region. This will be the mega-ship’s first season in the area.

For context, the French Antilles, or the French West Indies, are a group of Caribbean islands in the Lesser Antilles, which are famous for uniquely blending French culture with Caribbean creole customs.

“This adjustment offers guests a perfect winter-sun experience in one of the world’s most desirable warm-weather destinations, while offering all the innovative features and next-generation guest experiences for which MSC World Europa is known,” the cruise line stated.

Under the new deployment, guests will be able to choose between 7- and 14-night itineraries that embark from Fort-de-France, Martinique; Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe; and Bridgetown, Barbados.

Additionally, Cruise Hive has learned that the sailings will also call to popular cruise ports like Castries, Saint Lucia;  Saint George, Grenada; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; St. John, Antigua; Basseterre; Saint Kitts and Nevis; Roseau, Dominica; and Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Reason Behind the Itinerary Change

The 6,762-guest ship was originally supposed to spend the 2026-2027 winter season in the Middle East, operating 7-night sailings from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Doha between November 2026 and April 2027.

But as the conflict becomes more dangerous, MSC Cruises is putting the safety of its guests and crew members ahead of all else. 

Additionally, MSC Euribia is still stuck in Dubai, where she has been docked since the end of February due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which is on the north coast of Iran. It’s unclear when the vessel will be able to leave safely.

Because of the disruptions to this waterway, there is a good chance MSC World Europa wouldn’t even be able to make it to her ports of call. And even if she did, the cruise line would certainly like to avoid any risk of a second ship getting stuck.

MSC Cruises is reaching out to its travel partners and the thousands of guests booked on the now-scrapped Middle Eastern sailings to provide information about switching to a different sailing or acquiring a full refund.

MSC World Europa Replaces MSC Seaview

It seems like a bit of a domino effect is happening with the redeployment, as MSC World Europa is now meant to replace MSC Seaview in the French Antilles this winter.

The Seaside-class vessel will instead pivot to Brazil and Argentina, with information on the new South America itineraries coming soon.

“The deployment change sees MSC World Europa replacing MSC Seaview, which will be redeployed to Brazil and Argentina for the Winter 2026/2027 season, further reinforcing MSC Cruises’ commitment to offering diverse choices across its global portfolio. MSC Seaview’s itinerary for South America will be available soon,” MSC Cruises said.

Per cruise tracking data, the 4,132-guest MSC Seaview is currently deployed in Brazil through early April. She then sails to Europe, where her French Antilles season was supposed to start on December 5, 2026.

Royal Caribbean Reveals New Features Onboard Hero of the Seas

Excitement is building for Royal Caribbean’s upcoming fourth Icon Class ship, Hero of the Seas, and the cruise line has now revealed amazing first-in-fleet features for the new ship.

Among the most impressive new features are a total of nine onboard pools, family raft waterslides for all ages to enjoy, the largest swim-up bar at sea, and a whopping 28 dining venues, including an exclusive supper club experience.

“Icon Class truly set a new standard for family vacations, and Hero of the Seas takes that vision even further,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean.

“With more water, more thrills, and more choices for all ages, we’re continuing to build on what our guests love about Royal Caribbean and delivering the experiences families are looking for when vacationing together.”

Guests interested in being among the first to experience everything Hero of the Seas will offer can begin booking this week, with reservations opening to the cruise line’s Crown & Anchor Society members on Wednesday, April 1. Public bookings will open on Thursday, April 2.

The new ship is currently under construction at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Turku, Finland. Cruise Hive has already reported on several key milestones as the ship takes shape, including the installation of the Pearl in January 2026.

But what can guests expect onboard Hero of the Seas when she sets sail in August 2027?

Bigger-Than-Ever Splashtastic Fun

Poolside time is high on cruise travelers’ vacation plans and Hero of the Seas will deliver with nine different pools. The new Coconut Cove pool offers tropical vibes and in-water loungers adjacent to the Lime and Coconut bar, with stunning views over Central Park and its more than 30,500 plants.

Adults will love that The Hideaway will have not one but two pools, nearly doubling the water space in the adults-only area. Part of The Hideaway includes the largest swim-up bar at sea and an in-water DJ booth for outstanding vibes.

The Swim & Tonic pool and its swim-up bar are also being expanded for even more adults-only fun.

The youngest cruisers aren’t left out of expanded pools, however. In the Surfside family neighborhood, Spashaway Bay will have new features for junior cruisers.

When families want to splash together, they can head for the Category 6 waterpark and its two new family raft slides, including the first-ever family funnel raft slide at sea, a tremendous slide that extends out over the ship’s starboard side.

Dramatic Dining Options on Hero of the Seas

To refuel after so much fun, Hero of the Seas is offering 28 dining venues, including exclusive new options.

The Orleans Parish Supper Club continues the multi-course, entertainment-oriented dining experiences first introduced aboard Icon of the Seas. On the new ship, the venue will feature gourmet Cajun and Creole dishes reminiscent of the French Quarter, accompanied by live jazz music and curated cocktails for an upscale dining event.

“We’re really tipping our cap to kind of traditional cocktails that were invented in New Orleans,” said Ed Eiswirth, Senior Director of Beverage Operations for Royal Caribbean. “Then putting our own little twist on them!”

Also continuing on Hero of the Seas is the Royal Railway. The train car dining venue “travels” through different destinations and blends food, entertainment, and technology for an immersive rail journey even while guests are sailing.

Four new food stalls will be part of the AquaDome Market for even more expansive tastes, while iconic favorites such as Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar, Izumi, Chops Grille, Hooked Seafood, El Loco Fresh, and Sorrento’s will still be onboard.

Yet to be revealed is an all-new venue for the Surfside neighborhood. This new venue will host hands-on cooking classes for a variety of tastes, giving families even more experieences to enjoy together and memories to make on the most heroic vacations at sea.

Amazing Accommodations for Hero of the Seas

Sleep might be the last thing on guests’ minds on Hero of the Seas, but good rest is essential to make the most of every vacation moment.

With a capacity of up to 7,600 passengers, there will be plenty of different staterooms for guests to choose from for their best rest.

Of special note is the outstanding Ultimate Family Treehouse, a three-deck themed suite with a rooftop terrace, private whirlpool, and two main bedrooms each with a private bathroom and balcony. The rustic theme and nature touches offers a truly restful and nostalgic treehouse retreat for everyone!

Many couples reflect on the memorable moments of their relationship, from when they first met to their first kiss, first date, and the marriage proposal that truly started their life together.

One Texas couple, however, is enjoying reflecting on that moment with their engagement video on TikTok, which has gone viral almost nine years after they got engaged.

Now with more than 2.1 million views and nearly 3,200 comments, the video shows a very unique engagement that could have gone much differently.

The now-happily-married couple got engaged onboard the Dream Class Carnival Breeze, but the crew was celebrating for them even before that important question was popped.

According to multiple sources for the viral story, the humorous incident happened in October 2017 during what was to have been a family cruise vacation. Carnival Breeze was sailing from Galveston at the time, able to welcome as many as 3,690 guests onboard.

Gary Bratton III had meticulously orchestrated the proposal, from purchasing the ring at the onboard Effy store to coordinating with the serving team at dinner. The plan was for the ring to be “delivered” to the family’s table at the start of dinner, at which time Gary would propose.

Unfortunately, just like cruises can suffer from delays, itinerary changes, and rough weather that might derail even the most carefully laid vacation plans, Gary’s proposal also got somewhat derailed.

Instead of delivering the ring and then discreetly permitting Gary to propose to Amanda, his long-time girlfriend, the serving team brought the ring over with a piece of cake and a candle at the end of the meal, singing “Happy Engagement to You” at the same time.

Mind you, this is before Gary had the time to ask Amanda that most romantic question!

Amanda recently shared a video of the moment on TikTok, and it’s clear to see that Gary is flustered at the mix-up, while she is simply confused.

Just like cruisers have to adapt when other factors interfere with their vacation plans, however, Gary also adapted on the spot. Even as the crew was still singing, he got down on one knee and moments later, had that critical “yes” answer.

The rest of the dining room cheered and applauded as the couple kissed.

While it may have been frustrating for Gary at the time and perhaps wasn’t the proposal Amanda might have envisioned, years later, they can still enjoy it.

“That time Carnival celebrated our engagement before he proposed! Ah, good times! Best story all these years later!” Amanda captioned the throwback video, noting they still laugh about it together.

Was the Engagement Ruined?

Commenters viewing the video for the first time have split opinions on whether or not the couple’s engagement was ruined by the crew’s timing mix-up.

While some are outraged, many commend Gary for not reacting poorly and instead just going with the flow.

“He was upset,” one commenter noted from Gary’s facial expression. “He probably had it planned a different way, but I love how he jumped in. This was perfect in its own special way.”

Others note that Gary’s reaction is a definite “green flag” for a man who will be adaptable when challenges might arise, as they so often do in a marriage.

Authorities Investigate Gastro Cases on Disney Adventure Cruise

The brand new Disney Adventure has not even been sailing for a month, and the massive ship has already been hit with a gastrointestinal illness outbreak, or has it?

The Singaporean daily newspaper The Straits Times has reported that nine individuals on one of the first sailings of Disney Adventure had gastroenteritis symptoms. While individuals have not been identified, eight were guests and one was a crew member.

The impacted cruise was the ship’s March 16, 2026 departure, a 3-night sailing. All of Disney Adventure‘s voyages are cruises to nowhere with no ports of call, and the ship sails year-round from Singapore. The ship welcomed her first guests on March 10.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) is investigating the outbreak and will continue to monitor the ship to be sure no further cases are reported. As of Friday, March 27, there had been no further reported cases with gastroenteritis symptoms.

The infected individuals received medical treatment on March 18 and March 20, according to the SFA. No hospitalizations were required and each individual has since recovered.

Because the cruise ended on March 19, it appears some individuals did seek medical treatment after debarkation. While the cause of the outbreak has not been announced, norovirus is a very common infection that can be found not only on cruise ships, but anywhere large groups may congregate.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the incubation period for norovirus can be from 12-48 hours, and most people recover without significant intervention in 1-3 days. The virus is most widespread from December through April.

Cruise Hive has regularly reported on both types of outbreaks on different ships from different cruise lines.

So far in 2026, the CDC has noted just two outbreaks, one aboard Star Princess in mid-March (norovirus) and the other aboard Seven Seas Mariner in late January (e. coli, which has similar symptoms but a much longer incubation period).

Is This Really an Outbreak?

It may seem distressing that such a brand-new ship would feature a gastrointestinal outbreak, but the actual reported cases are extremely minimal compared to the ship’s overall size.

The Global Class Disney Adventure can host 4,222 guests at double occupancy and as many as 6,700 guests when fully booked with all berths filled. The ship is also home to approximately 2,300 crew members.

This means there may have been from 6,500 to 9,000 individuals onboard when the illness cases were reported. In total, the nine reported cases therefore represent just about one-tenth of one percent of everyone aboard.

Put another way, for every reported case onboard Disney Adventure, there were roughly 999 individuals who did not report any symptoms of illness.

It is possible, of course, that some travelers (or even some crew members) may choose not to report symptoms, particularly if their discomfort is mild and they may not even be aware that they are ill.

The CDC does not require an official report of any cruise ship outbreak in US waters until a minimum of 3% of guests or crew members report symptoms. Aboard Disney Adventure, though she is not sailing in the US, this would be at least 195-270 cases, depending on how fully booked the ship was at the time.

Guests on any cruise ship should take whatever steps they feel comfortable with to safeguard themselves from illness, including frequent and thorough handwashing, minimizing contact with high-use surfaces, and using hand sanitizer.

American Passenger Dies After Urgent Cruise Ship Evacuation

A heroic cruise ship rescue has sadly ended in tragedy for a recent passenger of Atlas Ocean Voyages’ World Voyager.

The guest was onboard the expedition vessel for a 9-night sailing to Antarctica, which embarked in Ushuaia, Argentina, on March 19, 2026.

But only one day into the sailing, on Friday morning, March 20, 2026, a 74-year-old cruiser from the US suffered a serious heart attack and required an urgent rescue, according to the Argentine Navy.

By this point, the 10,000-gross ton ship was in the northern portion of the notoriously rough Drake Passage, just south of the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago in South America.

Despite completing a heroic rescue that required semi-rigid boats, a helicopter and a ship from the Argentinian Navy, the man did not survive. Cruise Hive learned that the guest died after spending just 24 hours in a local hospital.

A Valiant Rescue Effort

Upon realizing the seriousness of the man’s condition, World Voyager’s captain contacted the Argentine Navy’s Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Ushuaia to ask for immediate assistance.

Cruise tracking data shows that the ship altered course to get as close as possible to the Ushuaia Cruise Port, but wasn’t able to move quickly enough to help the ailing guest.

World Voyager only has a maximum cruising speed of 16 knots and often has to operate at slower speeds while sailing in rocky conditions, which is what the Drake Passage is known for.

The ARA “Storni” ocean patrol vessel, which was already in the port of Ushuaia to fulfill search and rescue duties, was immediately deployed to help with personnel and equipment from the Ushuaia Naval Hospital onboard.

When the rescue team finally met up with the polar vessel on the afternoon of March 20, first responders from Storni deployed two fast semi-rigid boats that are capable of reaching speeds of up to 40 knots. They agreed the passenger was in need of an “immediate evacuation” and took over his care.

The MRCC also sent a helicopter to the scene and attempted to coordinate a medical air evacuation at Harberton Ranch, on the Beagle Channel, which would have been more efficient.

But as it was getting dark at this point, rescuers decided that it was safer to continue the evacuation by boat.

Medical personnel attempted to stabilize the patient on the way back to Ushuaia, where they arrived shortly after 10 p.m. The guest was then transferred to the Clinica San Jorge via ambulance, where he eventually died.

While it’s not the outcome that anyone was hoping for, the rescuers and medical team can take solace in the fact that they did their absolute best to save the cruise guest.

Per the Argentine Navy, Storni’s crew has already had to brush off the loss and has resumed its search and rescue duties within Ushuaia.

No Reported Itinerary Changes

Despite going off course, there were no itinerary changes reported for the 9-night sailing, with the ship visiting the Antarctic Peninsula from March 22 to 25 and passing through the Drake Passage twice. The sailing concludes in Ushuaia on March 28.

However, the sudden and tragic loss of a passenger like this on such an intimate sailing was surely felt by all onboard in other ways.

The smaller vessel only has room for 198 guests, and is likely operating at an even more limited capacity due to restrictions that only allow 100 guests to go ashore at one time in Antarctica.

This is also the final Antarctic expedition scheduled for World Voyager at this time, and it’s truly an awful way for the approximately 125 crew members onboard to end this deployment.

Cruise Hive is thinking of the passengers’ friends and family as they begin to cope with this tragedy.
