Eye-Tracking Study Unveils the World’s Most Stunning Cruise Ports

0

Key Aspects:

  • Eye-tracking technology was used to determine which cruise port views held guests’ attention the longest.
  • Valletta, Malta, ranked in the No. 1 spot globally.
  • Small and large ports, such as Nassau, Bahamas, were placed in the Top 20 list.

Anyone who has ever cruised knows the thrill that comes with arriving in each new port of call. Guests typically fill the outer decks to watch as the next exciting destination comes into view, all the while snapping photos to post on social media or send to friends.

So, where are the most beautiful cruise ports? According to a just-released study based on eye-tracking technology, the top 20 most beautiful ports represent a surprising mix of small and large ports.

The research was based on the cutting-edge technology that measures which cruise port views caught people’s attention first and held it the longest. The study was commissioned by a UK-based travel insurance company called All Clear.

“Around the world there are cruise ports and harbours that are set in some spectacular destinations, and those who love to sail around the world will understand how exciting that feeling really is,said Letitia Smith, head of communications at AllClear.

Onward to the results, which, by the way, contain no US-based ports.

Valletta Cruise Port, in Malta, ranks No. 1 on the list. The rocky island nation just off Sicily’s south coast is a growing cruise destination.

In 2024, it welcomed about 940,000 cruise passenger transits, a 4 percent increase from its pre-pandemic record. Its scenic Grand Harbour hosted 357 cruise ship calls last year.

The spotlight shone on Malta in May 2023, when Oceania Cruises held a gala christening ceremony there for Vista, the first of the line’s new Allura class. The whole city of Valletta is, after all, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Port of Ushuaia, Argentina, holds the No. 2 spot. Best known as the jumping off point for Antarctica voyages, the so-called End of the World port offers dramatic views of the Martial Mountains, located just north of the port city on Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego.

Roughly half of the top 20 ports are in Europe, and Palermo, Sicily, comes in at No. 3. With three cruise berths, the destination is a common stop on Western Mediterranean voyages.

For No. 4, we head to Stockholm, Sweden, and its Stadsgarden Cruise Terminal. One of three in the city, Stadsgarden is located within the city center and accommodates large ships.

Rounding out the top five is a true giant: Nassau, Bahamas. With its eight cruise terminals that can welcome the industry’s mega-ships, the port is situated in downtown Nassau.

The Port of Nassau welcomes more than 5 million cruise arrivals each year, according to its management firm Global Ports Holdings.

Following Nassau, Aruba Cruise Terminal came in at No. 6.

Ports in Canada, Norway, Mexico Rank No. 7

Some ports received the same ranking. For instance, Lisbon Cruise Port, Portugal, and the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Sydney, Australia, both rank at No. 7, while Port Sultan Qaboos, Oman, and Ege Port, Turkey, are No. 9.

There is no No. 8 ranking, nor is there a No. 10. The Port of Gruz, Croatia, is No. 11.

Moving farther down the list, the No. 12 spot goes to four ports — Cape Town Cruise Terminal, South Africa, Port of Kotor, Montenegro, Geiranger Cruise Port, Norway, and Funchal Cruise Terminal, Portugal.

All of the ports are visually appealing, but Geiranger, Norway’s second-largest cruise port, is particularly known for its spectacular views of the Geirangerfjord.

Three ports are listed at No. 16: Port of Quebec, Canada, Skolten Cruise Pier, Norway, and Cozumel Cruise Port, Mexico. Cozumel is another huge port in terms of annual cruise arrivals, which topped 4 million in 2024.

Port Hercules, Monaco, comes in at No. 19. The small, picturesque harbor is normally filled with luxury yachts, and the views of Monte Carlo are stunning.

Finally, at No. 20 is Port St. Maarten, a Caribbean island located in the Lesser Antilles. The port has two cruise ship piers and is a popular call on Eastern Caribbean voyages.

Norwegian Cruise Ship Skips Port Due to Weather, But Not Tropical Storm Erin

Key Aspects:

  • Rough weather has forced Norwegian Star to skip her visit to Nuuk, Greenland and remain at sea instead.
  • Wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour have been recorded, conditions far too risky for the cruise ship’s visit.
  • It is not unusual (though always disappointing) for ships to skip Greenland ports due to poor weather.

Despite Tropical Storm Erin causing concern among cruise passengers, another ship has adjusted course and skipped a port for entirely different weather-related reasons.

Norwegian Star has been unable to call on Nuuk, Greenland as planned due to rough weather thousands of miles away from the Caribbean.

The ship is currently sailing a 14-night one-way voyage from New York to Reykjavik, Iceland. The ship left the Big Apple on Thursday, August 7, 2025 and Nuuk was to have been her first of two planned stops in Greenland.

Unfortunately, as the vessel approached the capital of Greenland on the southwest coast, the weather was too challenging for a safe visit. The ship was to have been visiting from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 14.

As the ship was nearing the port, however, the winds were steady from 35-40 miles per hour. Winds were expected to increase through the morning, and by 9 a.m. gusts were as high as 80 mph.

Combined with rain expected to last for several hours, it was determined to be too unsafe for the ship to visit.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s website lists Nuuk as either a tender port or one with docking capabilities, but this varies based on ship and arrival date. Undoubtedly, the rough weather would have made either option unsafe for Norwegian Star.

Guests were notified of the cancellation with an announcement from the ship’s captain at approximately 7:30 a.m. as the ship was pulling away from the coast.

Satellite tracking data confirms that Norwegian Star attempted an approach and waited briefly nearby while assessing the conditions before departing.

The skipped port was not related in any way to the overboard incident earlier in the voyage, while the ship was sailing in Canadian waters.

Instead, the ship will spend Thursday at sea with extra activities and entertainment, in the hopes that she will successfully visit Paamiut on Friday, August 15 as planned.

Following Greenland, Norwegian Star will continue on to Iceland to visit Isafjordur, Akureyri, and Grundarfjordur on August 18, 19, and 20. The ship is scheduled to arrive in Reykjavik on Thursday, August 21.

Greenland Port Visits Are Always Challenging

While every guest is hopeful that their cruise itinerary moves forward as planned, it’s well known among experienced cruisers that Greenland is always an unpredictable destination.

Several times, Carnival cruise ships on special Greenland journeys have missed every port in the remote destination due to foul weather.

Because of the stunning fjords, cruising Greenland can be gorgeous. Those same fjords, however, make navigation extra challenging, particularly with strong winds and rough waves.

Furthermore, many Greenland ports are small communities with narrow harbors that do not have strong dock facilities to accommodate large cruise ships.

For example, Nuuk is Greenland’s capital and largest city, but only has a population of just over 20,000. For comparison, Norwegian Star is one of Norwegian Cruise Line’s smallest ships but can still welcome 2,348 guests – more than 10% of the city’s population.

Larger ships often use tenders in Greenland, but rough waves can make it too risky to use those smaller boats either for passengers or risk damage to the boats, as they may be tossed about.

Safety is the highest priority for any cruise line. Skipping a port is a far better alternative than risking guests, crew members, and the vessel itself in uncertain weather.

Hopefully, Norwegian Star will find smoother waters and have an enjoyable day at sea while she continues her amazing voyage.

Video Captures the Moment Waterslide Breaks on Icon of the Seas

Key Aspects:

  • A video that has been making the rounds shows the moment that the Frightening Bolt waterslide shattered under a guest onboard Icon of the Seas.
  • The clear panel breaks suddenly just after the man is dropped into the ride, sending shards of glass flying.
  • The slide remains closed on the Icon-class ships as an investigation is still ongoing.

It’s one thing to hear about something, but it’s entirely different to see it with your own eyes.

Cruisers have been dying to know what exactly happened when a waterslide broke while a passenger was riding it onboard Icon of the Seas.

But thanks to a video that is quickly going viral, cruise fans with a taste for danger can now see the actual moment that the Frightening Bolt waterslide shattered under a passenger on August 7, 2025.

Perhaps adding insult to injury, the guest didn’t even really get to enjoy the 46-foot-long slide before the scary incident unfolded.

For those brave enough to take on what’s considered the largest waterslide at sea, their experience begins with a trapdoor launch that sends cruisers flying into a free fall.

While most guests slip and slide their way to the bottom as intended after the free fall, the man had been sliding for mere seconds before an acrylic glass panel shattered underneath him.

Shards of glass went careening to the deck below as water began flooding out of the newly formed hole.

Contrary to some of the rumors being spread, the man also appears to be riding the slide as instructed, with his feet first and his arms crossed.

The passenger was injured in the unusual accident, from which he is said to have received significant skin lacerations. Royal Caribbean stated that medical care was promptly provided.

The man’s identity and the true extent of the harm has not been released at this point, presumably to protect his privacy and to preserve his legal rights.

The guest has now obtained legal counsel from leading maritime attorneys, Lipcon, Margulies & Winkleman, P.A., as he prepares to sue the cruise line for compensation.

Iconic Waterslide Remains Closed

Until Royal Caribbean can verify the root cause behind the shattered glass and make appropriate repairs, Frightening Bolt will remain shuttered.

The attraction is not just closed onboard Icon of the Seas, but also onboard the brand new Star of the Seas, which is being previewed ahead of her maiden voyage on August 31.

“The slide remained closed for the rest of the voyage while engineers assessed the damage,” Royal Caribbean said in a recent statement.

“The company has not provided a timeline for reopening and is investigating whether the failure was due to a manufacturing defect, installation issue, or an unexpected impact,” the cruise line continued.

Depending on the complexity of the issue and the subsequent repairs, an investigation of this sort can last anywhere from a few days to several months.

Despite what the chatter online would suggest, there is no known cause behind the surprise hole at this time.

It could be anything from a manufacturing defect with the panel, an installation error, or something else entirely.

Some witnesses have come forward to suggest that there were cracks in the ill-fated panel prior to this unlucky passenger’s ride, which could be indicative of wear and tear or an unexpected impact, but this has not been confirmed by the cruise line.

“As I understand it, it was cracked. Like the gentleman that went before him just (got) cut slightly, and then when the other gentleman went down, it sliced him, but he passed it, and then the glass fell and the water gushed,” a passenger named Lillian Destefano told Local 10 News.

But from the perspective of the video that has been circulating, there are no obvious indications that anything was wrong with the structural integrity until the panel broke.

While being patient is hard for the best of us (or at least it is for me), we’ll just have to wait and see the facts that Royal Caribbean’s investigation uncovers.

Glass Trouble Continues for Symphony of the Seas as Panel Breaks

Key Aspects:

  • A glass panel shattered aboard Symphony of the Seas for the third time this year.
  • Royal Caribbean has not identified a cause, though guests speculate the damage could be from a golf ball.
  • The panel broke on the sports deck near the zip line, thankfully not shattering onto the Boardwalk 10 decks below.

For the third time in just over two months, Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas has had a glass panel shatter. This time, the incident occurred on the sports deck near the ship’s zip line on deck 16.

The shattered tempered glass appears cracked but does not appear to have fallen, which is a relief, as the ship’s popular Boardwalk sits below it on deck 6.

Passengers posted about the latest incident on Reddit, showing the panel roped off by lounge chairs and under repair.

“Royal is really not having a good time with glass lately,” one passenger joked.

While some speculated that the damage could have been caused by someone on the zip line crashing into the glass, others noted the panel is easily accessible from the deck, suggesting it may have been struck by furniture or broken from a flying golf ball from the nearby mini-golf course.

“Look more like someone waiting for someone on the zip line hit the panel…. unless the person on the zip line is about 8-10ft tall,” said one Redditor.

But one commentator, who works in the glass industry, said poorly tempered panes can “just pop, no questions asked.”

The incident took place as Symphony of the Seas sails a 7-night round-trip itinerary from New York to the Bahamas, which departed on August 10, 2025.

The ship is currently calling in Nassau, and will continue to the cruise line’s Perfect Day at CocoCay private destination tomorrow.

Incidents Spark Safety Concerns

The new incident adds to a string of similar problems on Symphony of the Seas. On June 29, a glass canopy panel over the adult-only Solarium shattered as the vessel was preparing to dock in Port Canaveral, Florida.

The glass was positioned over deck chairs on deck 15 and above a bathroom entrance on deck 14. Passengers reported hearing a loud pop but said they did not see shards on the deck.

Just three weeks earlier, on June 8, a window in the exclusive Coastal Kitchen restaurant broke apart, sending shards onto the pool deck below and narrowly missing passengers – thanks to the speedy warning of crew member Nitin Kumar.

In all cases, the glass has broken into small, relatively safe pieces, as designed, and crew members have been quick to clean the areas and replace the glass.

While glass breaking on cruise ships is rare, Symphony of the Seas’ recent incidents are raising questions among guests. Some suspect vibrations may be a factor, while others wonder if extreme heat is a culprit.

The 228,081-gross-ton ship, which entered service in 2018, last underwent dry-dock maintenance in April 2023.

That 21-day maintenance included technical upgrades and general maintenance. However, years of constant exposure to vibration, temperature cycles, salt air, and more can have an effect on mounting brackets, degrade seals, and form stress fractures that eventually lead to breakage.

But Royal Caribbean’s unlucky accidents extend beyond Symphony of the Seas. Last week, on August 7, 2025, an acrylic glass panel on Icon of the Seas’ Frightening Bolt waterslide broke while a passenger was sliding through.

Royal Caribbean has not linked any of the recent breakages or confirmed their causes.

Cruise Passenger Cap in Bar Harbor Survives Appeal, But Fight Continues

0

Key Aspects:

  • Bar Harbor’s 1,000-passenger cap has been upheld by the US Court of Appeals.
  • However, the ruling sends one clause back to the lower court for further review.
  • The dispute began with a 2022 voter-approved referendum and doesn’t appear to be ending soon.

Bar Harbor, Maine, can keep its controversial 1,000-person daily limit on cruise-ship passengers disembarking. At least for now.

The US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit upheld most of a decision in a ruling issued August 11, 2025.

The ordinance, first approved by local voters in 2022, is designed to reduce passenger congestion in the town that serves as a gateway to Acadia National Park by limiting the number of people who can come ashore.

While supporters say it protects the quality of life for residents and improves the visitor experience, opponents argue it slashes tourism revenue.

The appeals court, in an opinion from Chief Judge David Barron, retired Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, and Judge William Kayatta, agreed… for the most part.

The judges say Bar Harbor has the authority to impose the restriction, and federal statutes regulating ports, navigation, or immigration do not override it.

“We largely affirm the District Court’s ruling in favor of the defendants as to these claims, but we do vacate and remand a portion of it,” the opinion states.

That means the court sent one part of the case back for further review, saying the lower court did not go far enough in weighing whether the ordinance creates an “excessive burden” on interstate commerce compared to the benefits it provides to the town.

Now the case heads back to US District Judge Lance Walker, who must take a look at how the ordinance impacts the cruise industry and regional tourism compared with its local benefits.

The dispute over Bar Harbor’s cruise-ship passenger cap began in 2022, when residents gathered enough signatures to place a referendum on the ballot limiting daily disembarkations to 1,000 passengers.

The measure passed that November with 58 percent of the vote, and town officials scheduled the cap to begin during the port’s 2024 season, which begins in the spring and ends in the fall.

This would give the cruise industry and local businesses time to adjust. However, a recount rejected the vote.

That same month, opponents filed a federal lawsuit saying cruise ships calling at the port often brought between 2,000 and 4,500 passengers at a time, far exceeding the new limit.

In February 2024, Judge Walker upheld most of the ordinance, but the battle didn’t end there. In 2024, the town cited Golden Anchor, owner of the Harborside Hotel & Marina, for allowing passengers to disembark without permits.

By March 2025, Bar Harbor had filed a $4 million lawsuit against the company, alleging nearly 98,200 passengers came ashore in violation of the new ordinance.

Meanwhile, appeals in the main case continued, and with the new ruling, will continue. Judge Walker’s next findings will undoubtedly upset one side of the argument and send the ruling to appeals again.

With all of the turmoil, many cruise lines have steered clear of Bar Harbor. Still, the port is welcoming regular arrivals from Norwegian Cruise Line’s 3,903-guest Norwegian Getaway and 2,344-passenger Norwegian Gem.

Seabourn’s 458-guest Seabourn Sojourn, Regent Seven Seas’ 750-passenger Seven Seas Splendor, and Crystal Cruises’ 740-guest Crystal Serenity are also sailing to the port, taking advantage of having smaller capacity ships that are allowed to call.

Departure and Port Time Tweaks for Norwegian Aqua in 2026

Key Aspects:

  • Norwegian Aqua will leave Miami 90 minutes early on select 2026 sailings in February and March.
  • Every port on those itineraries is also adjusted, but the changes are minimal and days are the same.
  • No port visits are cancelled and the ship’s return to Miami is not impacted.

A late winter or early spring cruise can be a wonderful escape from winter’s cold and ice. Guests booked on select sailings of Norwegian Aqua in February and March 2026 will enjoy that their getaway will now get away just a little sooner.

Norwegian Cruise Line has been contacting booked guests on sailings from February 8 through March 22, 2026 with details, which includes both embarkation changes as well as adjustments to every port of call.

First of all, Norwegian Aqua will depart Miami, Florida at 4 p.m. rather than 5:30 p.m. as previously scheduled. This is great for everyone who wants to get started cruising a bit earlier.

Guests who might be planning to embark later in the afternoon (a great strategy to avoid crowds!), however, may need to adjust their travel plans to be sure they don’t arrive too late to join the ship.

All the impacted sailings are Eastern Caribbean voyages. While every port of call will still be visited and the visit days remain the same, the time in each port has been adjusted as follows:

  • Sunday – Depart Miami at 4 p.m. (formerly 5:30 p.m.)
  • Monday – Day at Sea
  • Tuesday – Puerto Plata from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (formerly 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Wednesday – St. Thomas from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (formerly 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
  • Thursday – Tortola from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. (formerly 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
  • Friday – Day at Sea
  • Saturday – Great Stirrup Cay from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (formerly 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Sunday – Arrive in Miami at 7 a.m.

In total, Norwegian Aqua is losing one hour in Puerto Plata but gaining one hour in both St. Thomas and Tortola. The overall time at Great Stirrup Cay remains the same, but is shifted an hour later in the day.

Fortunately, these changes are minor enough that shore tours or other plans should not need significant adjustment. Nevertheless, any tours booked through Norwegian Cruise Line will be adjusted automatically if necessary.

These changes, particularly the embarkation time change, are similar to recently announced changes for Norwegian Escape. In that ship’s case, however, only the January 11, 2026 departure is affected.

Why Are Itineraries Being Tweaked?

While Norwegian Cruise Line has not provided details on why Norwegian Aqua‘s sailings are being adjusted, there are many possible factors that go into such changes.

Scheduling for pilots often impacts exactly when cruise ships can arrive or depart from various ports of call. The larger vessel cannot approach the dock without expert pilot guidance.

Worth Reading: 12 Itineraries Adjusted for Norwegian Aqua Cruise Ship

When multiple ships may be visiting on the same day, pilot schedules can be overcrowded or may need shifting to accommodate all arrivals and departures.

Furthermore, it is a safety consideration to limit how many large ships may be moving in or out of berths at one time. Final schedules must take into account the movement of all vessels.

Other port staffing, potential maintenance or repairs, and even tidal schedules could also have slight impacts that add up to shifting cruise itineraries.

Cruise lines also frequently tweak port times to permit better fuel efficiency or onboard maintenance, such as sailing at a slower speed so engines can be inspected or serviced.

Fortunately, receiving the notice of changes so far in advance means Norwegian Aqua‘s guests have plenty of time to adjust tours or plan for their earlier embarkation without difficulty.

Margaritaville at Sea Promises Spooky Thrills on Halloween Cruises

Key Aspects

  • Margaritaville Islander and Margaritaville Paradise will offer “Sail the Haunted Seas” cruises in September and October 2025.
  • The Hemisphere Dancer bar will become the Hemis-Fear Dancer bar, while costume parties and Halloween trivia contests will be held.
  • A third ship, Beachcomber, is expected to join the fleet later this year.

As the summer season begins to wane and thoughts turn to autumn, it’s time to look ahead to the cruise industry’s Halloween-themed voyages, and the Margaritaville at Sea cruise brand is getting in on the action.

The two-ship line (soon to become a three-ship fleet) has rolled out Sail the Haunted Seas, a series of cruises from early September through October that promise fun and frights as Margaritaville at Sea Islander and Margaritaville at Sea Paradise sail Caribbean itineraries.

The Florida-based cruise brand, inspired by Jimmy Buffett’s idea of laid-back Caribbean vibes, is known for its popular onboard dining and drinking venues such as the 5 o’Clock Somewhere bar, Hemisphere Dancer, Cheeseburger in Paradise, and License to Chill.

But on the upcoming special voyages, some of the spaces will be reimagined into the Hemis-fear Dancer and the Fright Flop Bar, for instance.

Along with surprise pop-up entertainment with spooky themes, the ships will feature activities such as White Hot Neon Nightmares, which transforms the line’s traditional glow party into an event with so-called “creepy cocktails and eerie beats.”

Special bubbling brews, called Potent Potions, will entice guests, as will a costume contest called Wicked Wins. Additional good times are planned with a program called Candy & Chaos, which is to feature dueling scream-alongs and Halloween trivia competitions, among other events.

The 2,650-guest Islander will offer the themed voyages from September 7 to October 26, 2025 departures, while the 1,680-guest Paradise will feature the special tricks and treats on departures from September 8 through October 31, 2025.

Based in Tampa, Islander sails 4- and 7-night Mexico and Western Caribbean cruises while Paradise, homeported in Palm Beach, offers shorter getaway cruises to the Bahamas and Key West.

While the cruise line has traditionally embraced short sailings, it announced earlier in 2025 that 8-night itineraries will be introduced in 2027 aboard Islander. The voyages, which opened for sale in April 2025, feature an overnight stay at the Port of New Orleans.

Third Ship Expected to Join Fleet in 2025

Margaritaville at Sea launched operations in 2022 with its first ship, Paradise, and added Islander in 2024. The ships were purchased from Costa Cruises and had previously sailed as Costa Classica and Costa Atlantica, respectively.

Margaritaville at Sea Beachcomber Cruise Ship

The cruise line recently acquired another Costa Cruises ship, Costa Fortuna, and renamed it Beachcomber. That ship, accommodating 3,450 guests, is in the process of being renovated and is expected to launch sometime later in 2025 — no firm date has been provided yet, nor has the ship’s homeport.

The cruise line has disclosed that Beachcomber will be redesigned to include the brand’s Caribbean-style decor and venues, and will introduce at least a dozen new spaces and experiences.

Margaritaville at Sea is not the only cruise brand that offers Halloween-themed voyages. Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean are among the lines that create similar onboard experiences that celebrate the season.

Nearly the whole Carnival Cruise Line fleet will offer its Frightfully Fun Sailings from September 26 to October 31, 2025, offering Halloween decorations and special activities, for example.

Carnival Explains Why No Changes for Tropical Storm Erin – Yet

Key Aspects:

  • Despite guest inquiries, Carnival Cruise Line will not change itineraries days ahead of a tropical storm or hurricane.
  • The cruise line constantly monitors storms and coordinates with authorities for the most accurate, updated information.
  • Tropical Storm Erin continues to spin in the Atlantic and may impact the Eastern Caribbean and Bermuda over the next few days.

With Tropical Storm Erin now churning away in the Atlantic Ocean and aiming for the Eastern Caribbean, should cruise guests be concerned about itinerary changes or cancellations?

Carnival Cruise Line is urging guests to be aware of the storm, but also to note that she is several days away and there can be great uncertainty this far away from her impact.

That is why the cruise line has not yet confirmed any itinerary changes, even though vessels like Carnival Celebration and Carnival Sunrise may be sailing toward the storm.

Brand ambassador John Heald offered a detailed explanation in his daily Facebook video, discussing just how Carnival monitors storms.

“Right now, Erin, the first of the tropical disturbances/tropical storms/possible hurricanes is forming,” Heald noted. “Many of you have written to me today and yesterday, four and five days before the cruises are due to leave, asking are we canceling the cruise.”

“Welcome to Hurricane Season,” he quips.

Guests’ concerns are reasonable, given that hurricanes frequently disrupt cruises this time of year. Furthermore, guests traveling to the homeport may want time to adjust their plans if their sailing will be impacted.

While Heald does put his witty spin on his video, he explains how the adjustment process works and when any such announcements may be made.

“We have this brilliant, unique fleet operations center at the Mother Ship in Miami. Brilliant ladies and gentlemen are there 24 hours a day monitoring the path of this storm, working with the different government agencies and weather centers and [the] National Hurricane Center,” he said.

“They will wait until the very last possible moment to look at the track of the storm to see if we can safely – underline that word, safely – bring you the cruise that you booked.”

Heald notes that such changes may be confirmed only the day before the cruise or even on the day the cruise departs.

Hurricane-related changes could range from alternative itineraries, changed ports of call, visiting ports in reverse order, or other adjustments.

Read Also: Cruising During Hurricane Season – What You Must Know!

“These decisions are never made three or four days ahead of time,” Heald said. “It would be pointless becuase hurricane tracks do of course change all the time.”

What Heald does emphasize is that ships are never put in jeopardy and never sailed into the path of a storm.

“We will never, ever take you toward a storm, never. We will always keep you safe,” he stressed.

Carnival Cruise Line’s hope is always to deliver the scheduled itinerary, though that isn’t always possible. Heald advises patience so guests can get the most updated information as soon as it is confirmed.

Tropical Storm Erin Update

As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, Erin remains a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour.

The center of the storm is located roughly 1,300 miles east of the easternmost Caribbean cruise ports, and is moving west at 17 mph.

While this path would put the storm heading directly into the heart of the Caribbean, a northward turn is expected in the next 3-4 days.

Tropical Storm Erin, Advisory 9
Tropical Storm Erin, Advisory 9

At this time, the National Hurricane Center forecasts Tropical Storm Erin to strengthen to a hurricane late Friday or early Saturday, possibly becoming a major Category 3 storm by Sunday morning when her northward turn begins.

Further tracks show the storm likely to impact Bermuda most directly. Because of that, Royal Caribbean has already adjusted Vision of the Seas’ next cruise, a Bermuda sailing, to ensure the ship is well away from the storm.

Booked guests sailing in the next week should make sure their contact information, including email addresses and cell phone numbers, is updated with their cruise line. This way, they can receive updates as soon as any changes may be made.

Star Princess Aces Sea Trials Ahead of October 2025 Launch

Key Aspects

  • Star Princess successfully performed a series of sea trials that tested navigation, propulsion, and other key systems.
  • The ship is undergoing final outfitting before being delivered to Princess Cruises from the Fincantieri shipyard.
  • Second in the line’s Sphere class, Star Princess is due to enter service on October 4, 2025.

As the clock ticks toward the launch of Princess Cruises’ second Sphere-class ship, Star Princess in October 2025, the 4,300-guest vessel has sailed through her sea trials and entered the final phase of construction.

Star Princess successfully performed at-sea maneuvers from August 9 to 12, 2025, testing key systems such as navigation, propulsion, safety, and other processes. The tests were held in the Adriatic Sea, near the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, where she is being built.

We confidently led Star Princess through sea trials, said Captain Gennaro Arma, master of Star Princess

As the proud leader of our newest vessel, I’m extremely impressed with the ship’s navigation capabilities and maneuverability. With the final countdown underway, my incredible teammates and I can’t wait to welcome guests aboard for unforgettable adventures this fall, added Captain Arma.

Construction of the 177,800-gross-ton ship began with her keel-laying in December 2023. Star Princess was floated out of her construction bay in September 2024, signifying the first time that the ship’s hull touched water.

With her sea trials behind her, construction now moves in the final phase of outfitting. Captain Arma is overseeing the ship’s build-out at the Fincantieri yard and will ultimately command a crew of 1,600.

The next major step in Star Princess’s journey will be the official handover to Princess Cruises from Fincantieri.

Her inaugural cruise is slated to depart on October 4, 2025, sailing an 11-day voyage roundtrip from Barcelona and calling at Marseille, France; Rome and Naples, Italy; Palermo, Sicily; Cartagena, Spain; and Gibraltar, UK.

The ship’s launch date is later than expected. Star Princess was originally scheduled to enter service in July 2025, however, the date was postponed to September 2025 and then to October 2025. No reason was given, but the changes prompted the cancellation of the ship’s first nine cruises.

The construction and design of mega-ships like Star Princess is a complicated business. Like her sister ship Sun Princess, which debuted in 2024, Star Princess is powered by liquified natural gas (LNG) and has state-of-the-art technology.

The ship features, for instance, two Azipod propulsion units that provide 360-degree thrust for both forward and reverse movement, and four controllable pitch bow thrusters that allow for precise lateral maneuvering—a key element in docking at crowded ports.

Sanctuary Collection, New Shows Sure to Delight Guests

Besides her operational processes, designers are building 30 restaurants and bars aboard Star Princess, scores of public spaces, and 1,500-plus accommodations in more than 30 stateroom and suite categories.

Among them is the new luxury-level Sanctuary Collection, which offers multiple cabin categories of its own.

The exclusive ship-within-a-ship area offers guests access to the private Sanctuary Club and restaurant, and features several key benefits and amenities that are included in the cruise fare, such as crew gratuities, unlimited specialty dining and premium spirits, and WiFi access.

In recent weeks, Princess Cruises has revealed details about onboard entertainment that guests sailing on Star Princess can enjoy.

Two new stage productions, “Meridien” and “Illuminate: A Spectacle of Joy,” will entertain cruisers in the ship’s Princess Arena, while the ship’s glass-enclosed space called The Dome will host the “Candlelight Concert Series.”

Another performance space, The Piazza, will be the venue for the debut of “Princess Jamz,” a show featuring the 15-piece Princess World Orchestra.

Following her inaugural cruise, Star Princess will sail one 7-night “Mediterranean With France and Spain” cruise before repositioning to Fort Lauderdale, where she will offer Caribbean voyages until mid-May 2026, when she deploys to Seattle for a series of summer cruises in Alaska.
