As MSC World Asia nears completion, one of her most distinctive features has officially taken its place on board. Just months ahead of the 215,863 gross-ton vessel’s debut in December, crews have installed the Dragon above the World Promenade.
The massive sculpture’s installation was shared in a video posted by MSC Cruises. Cranes lifted the Dragon’s individual sections over the ship and lowered them on board. The pieces were then assembled before the completed sculpture was raised into its final position above the promenade.
Cruise Hive first reported on plans for the Dragon in December 2025. A year before the third World-class ship’s scheduled debut, the cruise line unveiled details of the Asian-inspired features on board, with the Dragon as the centerpiece.
The stainless steel sculpture, fabricated by Milan-based Balich Wonder Studio, measures 39 feet long and 11.5 feet wide. It features a pearlescent white finish and is outfitted with 680 mirrors.
The sculpture is also adorned with 400 meters of strip lighting and over 3,000 LED lights. The lighting illuminates the sculpture at night, adding to the ambience on board.
Asian Inspiration Throughout MSC World Asia
The Dragon isn’t the only Asian-inspired detail aboard the new mega-ship. Asian culture, art, and landscapes are at the center of MSC’s design philosophy for MSC World Asia.
In June 2026, Cruise Hive reported on the installation of the 8-ton Tree of Life. This illuminated architectural structure was inspired by contemporary Asian cities and Singapore’s Supertrees at Marina Bay.
The Tree of Life serves as a focal point of The Harbour and the entry point to the Spiral. This 266-foot dry slide stretches across 12 decks of the ship from The Harbour to the Promenade.
The ship will also feature Asian-inspired dining, including a pan-Asian specialty restaurant. This currently unnamed venue will serve dishes inspired by Southeast Asian cuisine. An adjacent bar will serve beverages influenced by flavors from across the region.
These architectural installations help to distinguish MSC World Asia from her World-class sisters, MSC World Europa and MSC World America. While the vessels share many similarities, the distinct cultural theming gives each ship a unique identity.
MSC World Asia Nears December Debut
Construction on MSC World Asia began in April 2024 with a steel-cutting ceremony at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard. This ceremony took place just two days after the 216,638 gross-ton MSC World America floated out at the same shipyard.
The Dragon’s installation comes roughly nine months after MSC World Asia reached the same milestone, floating out in November 2025. Interior and exterior work has continued since then, with initial sea trials taking place in July 2026.
Despite the Asian theming, MSC World Asia’s debut will be distinctly European. Her inaugural voyage is set for December 4, 2025 with a seven-night Mediterranean voyage out of Barcelona.
One other World-class ship, MSC World Atlantic, is currently under construction, set to enter service in 2027. Two additional World-class ships have also been ordered by MSC from Chantiers de l’Atlantique, with the vessels scheduled to debut in 2030 and 2031.
