Passengers aboard the 180-guest river cruise ship Anna Katharina got a very rude awakening near 4 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026 when the ship crashed at full speed into a quay wall and the Freudenau lock gate on the Danube River near Vienna, Austria.
According to Kronen Zeitung, the ship’s bow was severely damaged and 14 guests sustained minor injuries in the collision. No serious injuries were reported, but six guests were transported to a local hospital for treatment of back, chest, and neck pain. All were discharged within a few hours.
Photos of the incident show the ship took the impact very nearly head on, completely crunching in the bow and collapsing an instrumentation structure at the front of the ship.
Emergency responders from the Vienna Fire Department were on site quickly and immediately inspected the vessel to determine whether anyone was overboard or if the hull had been breached. Initial reports are that no one was in the water and the hull, while badly damaged, remained intact.
Anna Katharina is a river cruise ship owned by German line Phoenix Reisen and operated by Scylla AG. Deck plans of the vessel show that the bow section is comprised of the Panorama Terrace and Lounge, a public area unlikely to have been busy at 4 a.m. when the crash occurred.

On the ship’s lower decks, the forward space is the galley, but it is unknown whether or not that area also sustained damage. The ship is 135 meters (443 feet) long and can welcome 180 guests when fully booked. Also onboard are 40 crew members.
Investigation to Proceed
The master of Anna Katharina, identified only as a 49-year-old Polish man, will be questioned by authorities about the incident. A full investigation will likely follow to determine exactly what caused the crash and whether proper procedures were followed at all times.
It is possible a technical malfunction caused the crash, but it may take weeks to make a final determination about how such a malfunction occurred.
While on a different scale, the incident has similarities to the March 2024 incident when the container ship Dali collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, ultimately causing the truss bridge to collapse.
In Baltimore, a catastrophic power failure on the cargo ship caused the vessel to drift into the bridge’s support. At this time, there is not yet any indication of what type of technical malfunction may have affected Anna Katharina.
The ship has now been secured at the shore and remaining passengers have been transferred to another vessel to complete their travels.
Anna Katharina began her current voyage from Passau, Germany on Sunday, July 19. The week-long roundtrip voyage was to have visited destinations in Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia. The next scheduled stop following the accident was planned for Weissenkirchen in der Wachau, Austria, approximately 56 miles west of Vienna, from 1-8 p.m. on Friday, July 24.
Due to the extent of damage, it is highly likely that upcoming voyages will be impacted. Booked guests should stay in contact with the cruise line or their travel agent for further details as plans are confirmed.
