What should have been a day to enjoy the stunning destination of Santorini started with a tragic discovery aboard Oceania Regatta when a 62-year-old woman was found deceased in her stateroom as the 30,277-gross-ton ship approached the port.
According to the Greek Coast Guard, port authorities were notified of the incident on Sunday morning, July 26, 2026. Because Santorini is a tender port, a small boat was used to bring the woman ashore.
The woman was then transported to the General Hospital of Thira, just one mile from the center of town. She was officially pronounced deceased, and an investigation was begun, as is standard procedure.
Authorities ordered the body to be transferred to the Forensic Medical Service of Piraeus for an autopsy to help determine the official cause of death. There is no indication at this time that foul play may be suspected, but undoubtedly all possibilities will be investigated.
The woman’s name has not been released, but she was noted to be a UK citizen. It is not uncommon for cruise lines and authorities to withhold personal information to protect the privacy of the individual, their traveling companions, and family members at such a distressing time.
Which Cruise Ship Was Involved?
Authorities have not officially identified which cruise ship the woman was sailing aboard, but only three vessels were anchored off Santorini on Sunday: Celebrity Infinity, Oceania Regatta, and Celestyal Discovery.
The ship was noted to be flagged in the Marshall Islands, which confirms the vessel as Oceania Regatta. Celebrity Infinity is flagged in Malta, while Celestyal Discovery is flagged in Italy.
Oceania Regatta is currently sailing a 14-night one-way itinerary from Monte Carlo to Istanbul. The ship departed Monte Carlo on Friday, July 17 and has already visited destinations in Italy, Malta, Croatia, Montenegro, and Greece.
The July 26 visit to Santorini was the ship’s third port in Greece, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. that day. There appears to have been no delay to the ship’s itinerary and the vessel moved on to her next port visit in Mykonos as planned on Monday, July 27.
Additional stops at Izmir and Bozcaada Island in Turkey will follow before Oceania Regatta arrives in Istanbul on Thursday, July 30 for an overnight stay prior to debarkation on Friday, July 31.
Oceania Regatta first entered service in 1998 with the now-defunct Renaissance Cruises. She was transferred to Oceania Cruises in 2003.
The luxury vessel can welcome 684 guests at double occupancy or up to 824 guests when fully booked with all berths filled. Also onboard are roughly 385 international crew members to provide exceptional service.
The ship will conclude her service with Oceania Cruises in August, at which time she is being chartered for an extensive world cruise through My Cruises Explorations by Norwegian. That epic voyage will depart Sydney, Australia on February 17, 2027.
