A dinner aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship quickly turned chaotic after a large ceiling panel suddenly fell inside one of the vessel’s dining venues, sending guests scrambling for safety during a Caribbean sailing.
The incident occurred on May 14, 2026, aboard Norwegian Luna while the ship was operating a 7-night roundtrip cruise from Miami. According to a TikTok post shared by a guest, the collapse happened inside The Local Bar & Grill while passengers were eating.
“This [was] the scariest experience my fiancé and I have had,” the passenger wrote. “We were having a meal at the Local Bar and Grill in the world’s newest cruise ship, Norwegian Luna, which first sailed last month, when the roof panels fell on us while eating.”
The guest said she instinctively ran from the complimentary 24-hour dining area located on Deck 8, while her fiancé remained behind to help other passengers trapped beneath the fallen panel.
Photos and videos circulating online appeared to show large ceiling sections collapsed across tables and seating areas inside the restaurant. Several crew members and guests could also be seen gathered around the damaged area immediately afterward.
In a statement provided to Cruise Hive, a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed the incident and said a limited number of guests received medical attention onboard.
“On May 14, 2026, an isolated incident involving a ceiling panel occurred in a guest area onboard. As a result, a small number of guests were evaluated and treated by the ship’s medical team for minor injuries,” the spokesperson said.
No details were released on exactly what injuries the affected passengers experienced or the number of passengers requiring medical attention. The dining area was temporarily closed for repairs and a review of what happened.

The cruise line added that the safety of guests and crew is always a top priority and that company is in touch with the affected guests to assist them, although the spokesperson did not say if those passengers will be receiving any compensation for their injuries.
NCL added, “Out of an abundance of caution, the area has been temporarily closed while repairs and a review are completed. The safety of our guests and crew is always our top priority. Our team is in touch with the affected guests to assist them.“
At the time of the incident, Norwegian Luna was nearing the end of its Caribbean itinerary that departed Miami on May 9, 2026.
The cruise included calls to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; St. Thomas and Tortola in the Virgin Islands; and NCL’s private island destination, Great Stirrup Cay, before returning to Miami on May 16.
Ship Entered Service Just Weeks Ago
The incident comes less than two months after Norwegian Luna officially entered service, making it one of the cruise industry’s newest ships currently sailing.
The vessel is the second Prima Plus-class ship for Norwegian Cruise Line and was constructed by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri at its Marghera shipyard near Venice.

At 156,000 gross tons, Norwegian Luna completed sea trials in the Adriatic Sea in late November 2025, successfully completing those trials before being delivered to the cruise line on March 5, 2026. The 3,565-passenger ship made her debut in Miami with a christening ceremony on March 27, 2026.
Injured passengers had been dining at one of the ship’s busiest dining venues, as the only place that serves food 24 hours a day. The venue features comfort food favorites like burgers, sandwiches, salads, wings, and desserts, and is designed as a relaxed gathering space.
The Local Bar & Grill is part of the line’s Prima-class dining lineup and is also found onboard Norwegian Aqua, Norwegian Viva, and Norwegian Prima.
