Guests currently aboard Carnival Sunshine may not be seeing much sunshine on the way back to the ship’s Norfolk, Virginia homeport, but her diversion further out to sea than her typical route is keeping the ship in somewhat smoother waters away from the worst of the nor’easter currently impacting the Atlantic seaboard.
Unfortunately, this means the 3,002-guest ship will be late returning to Norfolk and subsequently, the next cruise will be shortened by a day.
Carnival Sunshine departed on her current 8-night Canada cruise on Saturday, September 19, 2026 with plans to visit Saint John, Halifax, and Sydney. As the storm has developed along the US northeast coast through the week, however, her return plans had to be altered and the ship will be delayed. This will also impact the next sailing, the ship’s September 27 departure.
“Our Fleet Operations Center is actively monitoring the nor’easter affecting portions of the U.S. East Coast,” an email sent to guests on the next sailing explained. “Due to the storm’s location and in the interest of the safety and comfort of everyone on board, we have reduced the ship’s speed and adjusted our course toward calmer waters.”
AIS tracking confirms that Carnival Sunshine is not on her typical route close to the US coast, but instead is heading much further out to sea to skirt around the edge of the storm.
“As a result, we now expect to arrive in Norfolk on Monday, September 28, and your cruise will now operate as a 5-day voyage with a modified itinerary to The Bahamas,” the email confirmed.
The original itinerary departing on Sunday, September 27 was to have been a 6-night cruise with visits to Bimini, Nassau, and Celebration Key.
Carnival Cruise Line has not yet confirmed what adjustments will be made to the itinerary, but it is likely that one port of call may be dropped or the times for port visits could be changed.
“Our team is currently revising plans, and we will provide another update no later than 12:00 noon on Saturday, September 26,” the email noted.
John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, described in June 2026 what coordination is necessary when ports are changed or cancelled, including ensuring berth availability and quality time for guests to enjoy the port.
Above all, however, safety is the top consideration for any changes.
“Although itinerary modifications happen from time to time, any decision to change an itinerary is always done with the interest of guest and crew safety,” he stressed.
Heald noted that itinerary changes are not generally communicated to guests until the last minute, not because the cruise line is trying to hide anything, but because the arrangements can be complicated and weather-related changes may be unpredictable.
How Are Conditions Onboard Carnival Sunshine?
In the meantime, guests onboard Carnival Sunshine are feeling more motion and some onboard activities may be impacted. Guests have been advised to “take extra precautions while walking around and use handrails when possible,” according to a letter delivered to their staterooms on Thursday, September 24.
It is possible that outside decks and pools have been closed, especially if the winds are strong or the ship’s motion is creating too much swell activity in the pools, which makes them unsafe for use.
A passenger currently on Carnival Sunshine posted on Facebook on Friday evening a view of the ocean as the ship sails back to Norfolk against rough seas, nightfall, and stormy conditions:
“We are on the Carnival Sunshine and trying to make our way back to Norfolk where we are encountering some rough weather everything is good but anyone planning on getting on this Ship on Sunday it isn’t happening til Monday,” the passenger posted.
In times of rough weather, different entertainment shows might also be postponed or cancelled if it is unsafe for the performers. Alternative entertainment, such as an extra comedy show or improv act, might be offered instead.
“The seas have felt the motion and so have we but Carnival Cruise Line and their staff have done everything possible to keep us safe and make sure to keep us updated,” one guest currently onboard posted on Facebook.
