A last-minute itinerary change is rocking the boat for Royal Caribbean’s newest addition.
Passengers who are currently onboard Legend of the Seas for an 8-night sailing from Rome, Italy, to Barcelona, Spain, have reported that the planned call to Naples, Italy, on July 28, 2026, has been unexpectedly cancelled.
Cruise tracking data confirms that the 248,663-gross ton ship has turned around and is now sailing away from Naples.
“8 hours earlier we received a notification that we would not be stopping in Naples. We had booked and paid for the tours,” one of the frustrated passengers posted on Facebook.
“I am on Legend of the Seas and it is 11:45 pm and they canceled our port stop at Naples tomorrow with no warning. We had booked a very expensive day and it is all lost,” another shared on Reddit.
For context, Royal Caribbean will typically refund guests for any cancelled shore excursions that were booked directly through the cruise line.
However, guests who booked with independent tour providers are subject to the outside companies’ cancellation policies.
Reasons for the Sudden Itinerary Change
Royal Caribbean has not publicly commented on the itinerary change, but current guests onboard the 5,610-guest mega-ship have said that weather may be to blame.
“Rough waters, Italian authorities won’t allow us to dock,” one guest commented as a brief explanation.
According to marine forecasts, the port is expecting winds of around 13 knots when the Icon-class ship was scheduled to arrive at around 7 a.m. on July 28, which is nothing a ship of this size can’t handle.
However, gusts of 32 knots are also expected, which is when things start to get dicey. Strong winds increase the likelihood of potential collisions with port infrastructure or other vessels in the vicinity.
Adding to the confusion, some guests thought that there was a ban against the Royal Caribbean ship in Naples because of how the itinerary change was explained.
“The captain said there was a ban against the ship? Or is that just the hallway rumor for why the stop was cancelled,” one cruiser asked.
“It is not a rumor. I am on the boat and the Captain came on the PA and that is what he said,” a current guest replied.
While it’s possible that port authorities blocked this specific visit due to potentially dangerous conditions, there are no cruise bans in Naples.
In fact, Legend of the Seas is scheduled to visit Naples four more times in August, with calls scheduled for August 7, August 14, August 21, and August 28.
What’s Replacing Naples?
Per current passengers, the ship didn’t skip Naples without another destination in mind. Guests have been told that they will now be spending the day in the Provence region of France.
“Unfortunately we are heading for Provence, France instead. We will definitely be visiting Italy in the future,” one passenger commented.
“We are almost there and will turn around to Marseille,” another passenger said.
This also isn’t the first time that this itinerary had been adjusted. Cruise Hive previously reported that this sailing, which embarked on July 25, was updated due to operational adjustments.
Most of the original ports remained on the itinerary and were reordered, aside from Alicante, which was replaced with a visit to La Spezia (Florence/Pisa).
The visit to La Spezia already happened on July 26, with the final port calls in Palma de Mallorca and Malaga, Spain, expected to occur as scheduled on July 30 and July 31.
Disembarkation will take place on the morning of August 2, 2026, in Barcelona.
