Room Service May No Longer Be Free on Disney’s Newest Cruise Ship

Key Aspects:

  • Beginning in June, a $5 surcharge and an automatic 18% gratuity will allegedly be added to all room service orders onboard Disney Adventure.
  • Assuming this comes to pass, this will be the first time Disney Cruise Line has implemented an automatic room service fee.
  • At this time, Cruise Hive does not know of any plans to introduce room service fees on Disney’s other ships.

As one of the more expensive family-friendly cruise brands, one thing Disney Cruise Line has always had going for it is that room service is free and available 24 hours a day.

Only alcoholic beverages and a few select food items are not included in the cost of the cruise fare.

Other major brands like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, Celebrity Cruises, and Princess Cruises all charge flat delivery fees that are usually $10 or less.

However, this may no longer be true for Disney Adventure, the newest and largest addition to the most magical fleet at sea.

According to several outlets, a $5 delivery charge and an automatic 18% gratuity will be implemented on all room service orders for the 208,108-gross ton ship starting the week of June 1, 2026.

The 18% gratuity would be in addition to the daily gratuity and any other tips guests may want to add on.

Breakfast room service, which includes items like coffees and teas, bakery treats, cold cereals, and fresh fruit, will allegedly still be complimentary. But that is the only exception. Lunch, dinner, and snacks will all be subject to the charge.

“Well…THIS is what happens when people abuse a good thing. Eventually… the system fights back. And now, I’m sad to report that ONLY on the DISNEY ADVENTURE…ROOM SERVICE WILL no longer remain completely FREE,” one of many circulating social media posts stated.

However, this change has not been officially confirmed by the cruise line. As of the time of publication, Disney Adventure is also the only ship missing from the room service information page on Disney’s website.

Interestingly, this news comes soon after DCL introduced a paid dessert party for The Lion King: Celebration in the Sky fireworks show that is unique to Disney Adventure. The other Disney ships usually launch fireworks during Pirate Night.

This “Dazzle and Delight” package costs $49 per guest and includes a reserved VIP viewing area, desserts, drinks, and an exclusive trading pin.

Why Would Disney Introduce the New Fee?

Some current guests are theorizing that the size of Disney’s new ship is the reason behind the fee, potentially because crew members can’t keep up with the demand.

With room for 6,700 guests, Disney Adventure is about 45% bigger than the largest Wish-class ships.

“If this is true then I’m not surprised they went this route. Wait times for room service have reached well over an hour and there isn’t enough delivery crew members to meet demand. This is the most logical step,” one outlet posted on X.

Several guests have complained that room service is slow and plagued with issues. But with this logic, the fee would deter passengers from placing as many room service orders, which would make it easier to complete deliveries timely.

Other cruise fans had heard that food waste was a problem onboard, and that the fee would encourage guests to be more mindful.

“I’ve heard it’s because specifically people are being very wasteful on the Adventure,” one person theorized on Reddit.

But ultimately, this is all speculation until Disney confirms the reasoning one way or another.

Will the Fee Impact Other Ships?

As news of this fee spreads across the cruise community, fears that the charge will soon be coming to other ships in Disney’s fleet are taking hold.

“Disney Cruise Line to start charging room service for Disney Adventure! I really hope this only stays on one boat and doesn’t come to the other ships,” another cruiser posted.

While Cruise Hive doesn’t have a crystal ball to show what the future will hold, there are no known plans to implement the surcharge on other vessels.

It’s also worth noting that Disney Adventure is unique as the biggest ship in the fleet and the only vessel designed specifically for the Asian cruise market. Therefore, she may be treated as a special case.

The Singapore-based ship is currently operating 3- and 4-night cruises to nowhere, and she will continue doing so through at least August of 2027.
