Royal Caribbean Delays Reopening of CocoCay Private Island

Royal Caribbean has decided to delay the reopening of its private island in the Bahamas Perfect Day ta CocoCay.

CocoCay Re-Opening Later Than Expected

Royal Caribbean has stated that its private island in the Bahamas Perfect Day at CocoCay will open after a full assessment has been made. It was first hoped that the island would reopen on Wednesday, September 4 but that is now not the case. It was closed due to the Hurricane on August 28 with cruise ships changing itineraries.

With Abaco Island and Grand Bahama Island to the north devastated by Hurricane Dorian the cruise line has been checking the conditions of CocoCay through webcams. However, the full impact is not clear so a team of experts consisting of the Coast Guard and Army Corp Engineers is making their way to the island on Wednesday.

The cruise line has already posted photos of CocoCay during Hurricane Dorian and the majority of the main structures seem to be ok. Also, the large helium balloon was being held down by weights so the gale force winds would not blow it away. The construction of the new rides and buildings have been done with Hurricanes in mind.

The island now plans to open back up on Saturday, September 7 but it will depend on the assessment by the team of experts. Until then, vessels will continue to sail alternative itineraries.

Cruise Line Private Island Hurricane Coverage:

The good news is that the cruise line evacuated everyone from the island which was about 400 people with the majority being Bahamians. They were able to go back to their homes to prepare for Hurricane Dorian.

CocoCay is located around 110 KM south of Grand Bahama Island which includes Freeport. The cruise line opened the newly renovated $250 million island in May 2019.
