UK Report Slams Spirit of Discovery’s Storm Response After Deadly Incident

A UK government investigation into the death of one cruise passenger and injuries to dozens more during a storm at sea in 2023 is highly critical of the actions taken by shipboard officials and medical staff.

An accident report published on March 11, 2026, by the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) revealed the details of a weather emergency that impacted Saga Cruises’ Spirit of Discovery as the ship sailed a Canary Islands cruise roundtrip from Portsmouth, England, on October 24, 2023.

The violent weather, which included 10-meter waves (32 feet) and strong winds, hit while the 58,250-gross-ton ship was crossing the Bay of Biscay.

One guest, 85-year-old Trevor Gilks, died from injuries he sustained during the storm, but the MAIB report puts the blame on the ship’s medical staff, who it says provided “suboptimal treatment.”

More than 100 guests were treated for injuries, including fractured hips and ribs, a shoulder injury, head trauma, and spinal injury. It was a spinal injury that claimed Gilks, and the accident report details a lack of sufficient care by the onboard medical team.

According to the report, Gilks was sitting in a high-back chair when the ship violently rolled by 10 to 13 degrees, causing him to fall backward, severely injuring his neck.

Gilks was taken to the ship’s medical center, where an X-ray was taken of his neck and emailed to an onshore radiologist. The specialist was unable to say whether his spine was damaged or broken. No additional X-rays were taken and transmitted ashore.

Due to the storm, a helicopter evacuation was not possible, so Gilks did not receive hospital care until the ship returned to Portsmouth. He died four days after his injury.

Findings Point to  ‘Overstretched’ Medical Team

MAIB’s report indicates two medical determinations: The lack of implementation of a mass casualty incident plan contributed to the medical team becoming overstretched, and the delay in identifying that a passenger had suffered a spinal injury led to him receiving suboptimal treatment.

While cruising remains safe and accidents rare, Spirit of Discovery’s violent motion in heavy weather caused injury to over 100 passengers and, very sadly, one passenger lost their life as a result of injuries sustained,said Rob Loder, chief inspector of the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.

“A complex sequence of events led to this accident and we have identified a number of clear lessons around vessel safety, crew decision-making and medical response,added Loder.

According to the report’s findings, Spirit of Discovery lost propulsion due to violent motion, which caused propeller exposure, overspeed, and automatic shutdown. Also, the decision to cross the Bay of Biscay during the storm was not effectively managed by the crew and onshore management, it added.

A Closed Port Prompts an Unlucky Route Change

On the fifth day of the 14-day voyage, the report revealed, the ship’s captain and Saga’s shore team began discussing the approaching storm. Three days later, the decision was made to skip the itinerary’s final Canary Islands port call, to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and sail instead to La Coruna, Spain, on November 4. The ship would then continue on to Portsmouth on November 5.

However, on November 3, as Spirit of Discovery sailed past Portugal’s southern coast, it was learned that the port of La Coruna had closed due to the weather. At that point, the captain decided to sail directly to Portsmouth, arriving there on November 6, a day earlier than scheduled.

Among the recommendations from MAIB are two that were specifically made to Cruise Lines International Association. One, that cruise ships should increase the number of medical personnel with an Advanced Trauma Life Support qualification, and two, that passenger vessels should update their policies on securing furniture in heavy weather.

While the report reads like a lawyer’s dream document, given the placement of blame and the exacting details of crew and medical staff actions, it also specifically notes that it is not written with litigation in mind.

In fact, its contents are deemed inadmissible in any judicial proceedings whose purpose is to attribute liability or blame.

Lawsuits brought by injured cruise guests are common across the industry. In a recent case, three people sued Carnival Cruise Lines for negligence after they were injured when a tender boat experienced turbulent conditions.

It is not only injuries that prompt lawsuits; more than 100 guests who became ill while sailing on a P&O Cruises’ ship in 2024 are suing the line for compensation.

Spirit of Discovery accommodates 1,000 guests and 530 crew members. The ship entered service in 2019 and sails European cruises year-round from Portsmouth and Dover, England.

Cruise Hive reported yesterday on a grandmother’s unintentional entitlement of asking that all 6,780 guests aboard the ship change their White Night attire plans so as not to detract from her granddaughter’s wedding day on the third night of the cruise.

While the initial post quickly went viral through social media with the assumption of entitlement, it’s actually just a case of a grandmother wanting her granddaughter to have the most memorable and amazing wedding day.

Now, the bride has responded to the viral conversation to explain the rest of the story.

“I did not personally request that anyone change their attire or that the ship changes the theme night. Part of why we chose to get married on a cruise is that we’re pretty easy going, low-key people that don’t like the spotlight too much,” she explained.

“I’m honestly mortified that this has all happened. I’m aware that my grandma’s post was quite bold, but it was just a loving grandma with good intent, trying to make her granddaughter’s wedding day as perfect as possible.”

Cruise Hive spoke with the bride directly to get more details of their very special day at sea. This will be the bride’s third cruise and her fiancé’s first time setting sail.

The couple will be accompanied by approximately 40 friends and family members on the cruise for their special day. The wedding will be aboard Oasis of the Seas, and yes, the bride herself will be wearing white.

Bridesmaids will be in sage green, and as for the thousands of other guests onboard, the bride doesn’t mind whatever they might wear.

“I do think it would be hilarious if everyone did wear white or maybe even use this as an excuse to bust out your own wedding dresses and veils! But most importantly, of course, it’s whatever you choose to wear,” she said.

And her grandmother? She will be walking the bride down the aisle and is sure to be lovely in whatever color she wears.

Guests Support Both Bride and Grandmother

Reaction to the story has been on both extremes. While at first it seemed the grandmother was being very entitled to expect other guests to dress accordingly for a wedding they aren’t a part of, many guests now see the love behind the request.

“Honestly I thought it was so endearing that your grandma put in the effort to make sure you felt special,” one commenter said.

“We will all be celebrating you!! You will now have the biggest wedding ever! And we’ll give a round of applause for Granny too,” another laughed.

In an interesting twist, it appears that Royal Caribbean may, in fact, have changed White Night away from the bride’s wedding day. While the cruise line has not officially commented on the situation, updates in the Royal Caribbean app can show when theme nights change.

Theme nights and overall activity schedules do fluctuate from cruise to cruise, depending on port schedules and when different activities can be worked into the schedule without too much conflict from signature events.

On this particular 8-night sailing, the first two full days of the cruise are at sea as Oasis of the Seas makes her way to Oranjestad, Aruba on Tuesday, March 24. The next day will be a visit to Curacao, followed by two more days at sea as the ship heads north again.

The last port of call is a visit to Perfect Day at CocoCay on Saturday, March 28, the last night of the cruise before the ship returns to Fort Lauderdale.

MSC Cruises is Upgrading its Exclusive Restaurant Across Four Ships

Since 2008, MSC Cruises has been giving its guests the luxury VIP treatment with MSC Yacht Club, and that experience is about to get even more premium.

MSC Cruises has announced a complete redesign of the Yacht Club Restaurant on the cruise line’s four Fantasia Class ships: MSC Fantasia, MSC Splendida, MSC Divina, and MSC Preziosa.

The refurbished restaurants will feature a more contemporary design and layout, bringing modern elegance to the over ten-year-old ships.

The upgraded Yacht Club Restaurant is already available aboard MSC Splendida, which re-entered service on February 7, 2026, following completion of her refurbishment at Palumbo Malta Shipyard.

Guests aboard the 139,936 gross ton ship are currently enjoying the new Yacht Club on a 7-night, round-trip Mediterranean cruise with stops in Italy, France, Spain, and Tunisia.

Other itineraries aboard MSC Splendida featuring the redesigned Yacht Club are now available to book, including 7-night Mediterranean sailings from MSC’s new terminal in Barcelona, which opened last year.

Meanwhile, the oldest ship in the class, MSC Fantasia, which debuted in 2008, is expected to complete her refurbishment in December 2026, followed by MSC Divina in April 2027, and MSC Preziosa in February 2028.

The restaurant isn’t the only thing changing on these ships, however. 

As a part of this massive refurbishment effort, MSC is also rolling out a completely redesigned Future Cruise Office, with the same modern luxurious design sensibilities they’ve applied to the Yacht Club.

What is Yacht Club?

This premium experience is built around a “ship within a ship” concept, providing guests willing to pay the premium cost with a private, luxurious escape.

Yacht Club guests get access to a private butler service, complimentary drinks, exclusive shore excursions, a personal photographer, and a plethora of private, luxury spaces onboard, including an exclusive restaurant. 

Yacht Club is currently available on fifteen ships:

  • World Class: MSC World Europa, MSC World America
  • Seaside Class: MSC Seashore, MSC Seascape, MSC Seaside, MSC Seaview

In February, Cruise Hive reported that the cruise line is adding the yacht club to MSC Musica and MSC Orchestra, to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.

The other two Musica Class ships, MSC Poesia and MSC Magnifica, will debut their Yacht Clubs in summer 2026. When all currently announced upgrades and refurbishments are complete, MSC’s Yacht Club will feature on 20 of the 24 ships in the fleet.

Other MSC Refurbishment Efforts

The Fantasia Class ships aren’t the only vessels in MSC’s fleet to get a modern sprucing up. Lately, the cruise line has been making major investments in getting its entire fleet up to modern luxury standards.

Following a two-month-long refurbishment in December 2025, MSC Magnifica unveiled its own Yacht Club redesign and expansion, set to debut by summer 2026.

It’s not just the ships getting a facelift either. In 2025, MSC welcomed guests to two brand new, state-of-the-art cruise terminals in PortMiami and Barcelona.

Between major upgrades like these and brand new ships rolling out in years to come, including the 6,750-guest MSC World Asia debuting in December 2026, MSC Cruises is showing their dedication to premium cruising experiences.

Thousands Impacted as Carnival Firenze Unexpectedly Cancels Multiple Fall Sailings

Thousands of Carnival guests-to-be who were looking forward to sailing onboard Carnival Firenze this fall have just received the disappointing news that their voyages have been cancelled.

Carnival has cancelled just over a month of departures for the 4,126-guest ship, starting with the October 12, 2026, sailing and ending with the November 16, 2026, sailing.

These voyages would have all been 3- and 4-night getaway cruises to Baja based out of Long Beach, California.

“We have made some changes to the itinerary plans for Carnival Firenze and, unfortunately, your cruise has been cancelled,” Carnival wrote in a letter to impacted guests, which was obtained by Cruise Hive.

“We sincerely apologize for this change and thank you for your understanding. We look forward to having you sail with us,” the cruise line continued.

The cruise line did not elaborate on why this decision was made and what, if anything, will replace the cancelled sailings. As of the time of publication, the impacted itineraries have been removed from the Carnival website and nothing new has appeared to take their place.

It’s possible that the Carnival ship is making an unexpected visit to dry dock, which would be her first since launching in 2024. In this case, no new itineraries would be added.

Multiple Compensation Options Provided

Of course, Carnival isn’t simply leaving passengers of these now scrapped sailings high and dry. Cruise Hive has learned of two separate options through which they can receive compensation.

The first option is to contact the cruise line to reschedule on a comparable sailing, which must be done by March 25, 2026.

Guests’ original cruise fares will be protected if they go this route, and they will also receive a $50 USD onboard credit per person (up to $100 per stateroom) as an apology for the inconvenience.

If guests would rather just cut their losses and cancel, no action is required. Reservations will be automatically cancelled after March 25 and passengers will be provided with a full refund, including pre-purchased packages, Carnival shore excursions, and normally non-refundable deposits.

Refunds will take an estimated three weeks to process, but the exact timeline will depend on how guests’ individual banks work.

Could More Sailings be Impacted?

At this time, only Carnival Firenze’s sailings between October 12 and November 16 have been impacted by the mass cancellations.

But interestingly, the Italian-themed ship is already operating these 3- and 4-night Baja-bound itineraries, and is scheduled to continue to do so after the surprise break and through the end of the year.

The cruises around the cancellation window, including the 3-night sailings embarking on October 9 and November 20, are also still expected to go ahead as planned.

For context, the longer 4-night itineraries visit Catalina Island, California, and Ensenada, Mexico, while the 3-night versions sail straight to Ensenada. The alternating itineraries are otherwise identical.

Without knowing the reason for why these cancellations were made, it’s hard to predict if more sailings will be impacted. Guests can always sign up for Carnival Text Alerts to receive immediate, real-time updates if changes are made to their sailing.

Carnival Warns of Another High Traffic Weekend in PortMiami

Saying there is traffic in Miami is like saying the sky is blue, but some days can be worse than others. This coming weekend, March 14-15, 2026, will be two unusually bad days.

With a high number of ships on the schedule, construction taking place both in and around the port, and a major cancer fundraiser, guests can expect delays, road closures, and detours throughout the weekend.

Carnival has warned guests of three ships embarking in PortMiami this weekend – Carnival Horizon on March 14 and Carnival Celebration and Carnival Magic on March 15 – to plan accordingly.

“We’d like to inform you that PortMiami will be operating with a high number of ships the day of your embarkation, amidst construction in the downtown area and within the port premises,” Carnival warned its soon-to-be-guests in a letter, which was obtained by Cruise Hive.

The construction that the letter refers to is the multi-phase development project underway in Downtown Miami, as well as the construction of the new Terminal G, which Royal Caribbean broke ground on in January 2026.

“We suggest you allow ample travel time to account for any delays. Please check traffic conditions of the area on embarkation day, so you may adjust your route accordingly,” the cruise line instructed.

The vessels will not wait for guests who arrive after the final boarding cutoff time.

Fundraiser Event Contributes to Saturday Traffic

On March 14, the 3,960-guest Carnival Horizon will embark on a 14-night Southern Caribbean sailing, and will be joined in Miami by six other cruise ships trying to get through their own turnaround days.

These include Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, Virgin Voyages’ Resilient Lady, NCL’s Norwegian Encore, MSC Cruises’ MSC World America, Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur.

For context, this brings the total number of expected ships to seven, and the Florida port has successfully accommodated up to ten large vessels in a single day.

Beyond expecting a large number of ships, including massive mega-ships like Icon of the Seas and MSC World America, guests may encounter extra detours and road closures due to the annual Bounce Back for Cancer event taking place from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. on March 14.

“If you’re sailing Saturday, please note Miami will also be hosting the Bounce Back from Cancer event. Consequently, there will be detours and heavier-than-normal traffic in and around the area,” Carnival advised.

During the event, participants run, walk, and bounce basketballs through the streets while following a 14-mile course, which obviously necessitates road closures that inevitably lead to increased congestion.

Relatedly, the City of Miami has also issued an alert that its Brickell, Biscayne, Coral Way, and Coconut Grove trolley routes will be diverted because of the event.

Sunday Promises a Busy Schedule

Cruisers embarking on Sunday won’t have to contend with delays related to the Bounce Back from Cancer event, but there will still be seven ships in the port – which is more than enough to cause congestion.

Of course, the 3,690-guest Carnival Magic will be in the port to disembark its current 8-night Southern Caribbean sailing and embark on a new 6-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary.

Similarly, the 5,362-guest Carnival Celebration will make an appearance to disembark its current 7-night Eastern Caribbean voyage and launch a new 7-night sailing to the Western Caribbean.

The Carnival ships will be joined by Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Beyond, Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas, and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Jewel.

Given the number of passengers that will be coming and going, guests should definitely plan plenty of extra time to reach not just the cruise port, but also their exact terminal.

Thinking of Tipping Crew With a Gift Card? Carnival Says It’s Not That Simple

Cash is king, of course, but if guests want to offer a significant tip or just don’t feel comfortable carrying higher amounts of cash, how about a gift card?

One guest reached out to Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, John Heald, asking about whether or not crew members would be able to use gift cards.

“We always take gift cards and add to our Sail and Sign account,” the guest noted. “If we were to leave [our] steward a $100 gift card can they use it onboard?”

The question is an intriguing one. Offering gift cards would be an easier way to offer generous gratuities without the need for large sums of cash or if one’s cash might run low toward the end of the cruise. The answer, however, depends on the type of gift card.

“That is absolutely very, very lovely of you,” Heald replied. “If this is a Carnival Cruise Line gift card, I’m afraid they can’t really utilize this. I’m so sorry.”

The same restriction would likely apply to any cruise line, and crew members would be unable to use gift cards from their own cruise line. Fortunately, there are many other types of gift cards that could be useful.

“If it’s not a Carnival Cruise Line gift card that you are mentioning then yes, I’m sure they will be able to use it,” Heald said. “Thank you for being so generous and kind.”

Cruise Planning: Calculate and Compare Cruise Gratuities

Pre-paid Visa or similar general use gift cards would likely be the most versatile for crew members to use on whatever purchases or expenses they may have. Amazon gift cards might also be very popular, because crew members could have purchases delivered to their homeports or might even send gifts home to their families.

Other fun options might be gift cards for fast food restaurants or retailers in ports of call where crew members might have time for a break.

Unique Tips Can Cause Controversies

Guests who might consider gift cards as extra gratuities should be aware that there could be problems with them. Monthly fees, for example, could make the gift card less valuable for crew members, especially if they are not able to use it quickly. Gift cards for retailers or restaurants crew members may not like are also less useful.

Cruise Hive has previously reported on some tipping controversies, such as the practice of laying out cash in different words or patterns. While the generosity is appreciated, there is some argument that it is less than a professional way to thank crew members and might actually make more work for them.

Another unique option is offering $2 bills as a gratuity, which are very welcome and considered especially lucky by many crew members.

Of course, while any extra gratuity is certainly appreciated, it is never expected and guests should not feel obligated to offer any additional gratuity, gift, or other token.

Carnival Cruise Line is firm that guests have the ability to adjust automatic gratuities at their discretion, a policy that has no plans to change.

Disney’s Massive New Ship Debut Hit by Mattress Shock and Early Letdowns

Disney Cruise Line is known for many superlatives, including spectacular service, extraordinary theming, decadent menus, and outstanding entertainment. It stands to reason that guests onboard Disney Cruise Line’s newest, biggest ship would be in for even more wows.

The first reviews are trickling in from Disney Adventure‘s maiden sailing from Singapore, however, and not all the notes are exceptional.

Popular YouTuber Theme Park Express has shared some first impressions from the ship’s March 9, 2026 departure on social media. During the 3-night cruise to nowhere, there was time to check out all the ship had to offer.

Unfortunately, not all the offerings were as amazing as expected. Of greatest concern was the size of the interior stateroom, along with the condition of the mattresses (if they can be called mattresses!) and noise.

Theme Park Express had an interior stateroom on Deck 13, a first-in-fleet feature for Disney Cruise Line with interior staterooms having views overlooking public spaces. In this case, the stateroom overlooked Disney Imagination Garden. While the view was lovely and convenient, the noise was not so pleasant.

“There’s definitely noise [bleeding] through even with the door closed and locked,” Theme Park Insider noted.

This type of stateroom is currently the cheapest onboard Disney Adventure, but that doesn’t mean it really is “cheap” for upcoming sailings. The cheapest rates for 3-night sailings in the coming months start at roughly $700 per person.

The room, which can sleep four, is surprisingly bare-bones and doesn’t have a traditional bed. Instead, two couches pull out at night, while two more bunks are lowered into position for additional guests.

Disney Cruise Line notes that this stateroom arrangement is expected to be popular with young, single travelers as a lower-priced option but guests still have access to all onboard experiences, dining opportunities, and more that the biggest ship in the fleet offers.

When the beds are made up for the night, along with ladders to access the upper bunks, there is very little floor space to move around in the stateroom. Even more surprising, however, is the state of the bedding.

“I DON’T EVEN HAVE A **** MATTRESS!” said Theme Park Insider. “They just put a cover and a thin pad on the couch cushion!”

In the photo, it appears a mattress topper is layered over the couch cushion (which itself is fairly thin) and held in place with thick elastic straps. This would create a very firm feeling for sleepers, which might be fine for some travelers but could be very uncomfortable for others.

Other less-than-pleasant surprises onboard include a much darker color palette in the Walt Disney Theater than onboard other ships in the fleet, as well as lackluster menus in some restaurants. Of course, menu offerings are always subjective and not everyone shares the same tastes.

Finally, one exciting feature of the ship just wasn’t available to the initial cruisers. Ironcycle Test Run, the longest roller coaster at sea and a first for Disney Cruise Line, was never operational during the voyage.

While it isn’t unusual for different attractions to have downtime, the loss of one of the ship’s most unique attractions is certainly disappointing to guests.

In response to onboard feedback and frustrations, Disney Cruise Line did offer guests $100 of onboard credit that was posted on the last night of the sailing.

“We understand that you may not have been able to experience everything you had hoped to enjoy on the cruise,” a letter delivered to guests’ staterooms read. “As a thank you for sailing with us and for your understanding – we are pleased to extend an onboard credit of $100 per stateroom.”

Theme Park Insider notes that while the gesture is a nice one, it’s not very useful for those who might not spend much onboard. The credit is exclusive to purchases during this specific cruise and cannot be transferred to any future sailing.

Some Spectacular Fun Aboard

All the reviews aren’t negative, however. Despite some glitches and disappointments, Theme Park Insider not-so-subtly shares the best points of the voyage as well.

“‘Remember’ is [hands] down the BEST Disney Cruise Line show ever created! It left everyone in our group in literal tears (including me) by the end,” they said. “The puppetry is incredible and the whole company is fantastic! Disney truly brought Pixar to life with this show and gave us a story that left me wanting another hour in show length.”

Equally enthusiastic was the response to the “Lion King Celebration in the Sky” fireworks show, which Theme Park Insider calls the “crown jewel” of the fireworks displays the cruise line puts on. The pyrotechnic entertainment was nearly 12 minutes long, definitely longer than most at-sea fireworks displays.

Other great details that wowed guests were the dynamic lighting in the Animator’s Table restaurant, fantastic menus in select restaurants, and the classic Mickey churro waffles that made a highly anticipated appearance on the last morning of the cruise.

Other guests onboard Disney Adventure‘s first sailings have used words such as “floored,” “overwhelmed,” “absolutely beautiful,” and of course, “magical” to describe the new ship, which is sure to amaze thousands of travelers each week.

It’s not unusual for brand new cruise ships to experience some glitches or be missing some finishing touches while the details of new operation are ironed out. Hopefully Disney Adventure‘s upcoming sailings will be smoother and better than ever, giving all 6,700 guests onboard amazing adventures to enjoy.

Sickness Sweeps Through Guests and Crew on Newest Princess Cruises Ship

Star Princess, which debuted at the end of 2025, has experienced a lot of firsts in her first year in service. An outbreak, however, is one milestone the young cruise ship was hoping to avoid.

As of March 12, 2026, the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) has confirmed an outbreak of the highly contagious norovirus on the Princess cruise ship.

This is the first outbreak ever on the 4,300-guest ship and the second official gastrointestinal outbreak of the year reported by the CDC, which only covers US-based ships. The first outbreak was caused by E.coli and struck Regent Seven Seas’ Seven Seas Mariner in January.

104 of the 4,307 passengers onboard (or 2.4% of the guest population) experienced gastrointestinal symptoms. 49 of the 1,561 crew members (or 3.1% of the workforce) also became ill.

For context, gastrointestinal outbreaks must be reported when more than 2% of the onboard population becomes sick, and the VSP publicly declares an official outbreak when numbers reach 3%.

The impacted voyage is the current 7-night sailing to the Western Caribbean and Mexico that embarked in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on March 7, 2026. It will disembark at the same port on March 14, 2026.

The sailing is also being operated simultaneously with a 14-night sailing, which also embarked on March 7 and combines the Sphere-class ship’s 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries.

Preventative Protocols Implemented on Star Princess

Cruise lines do their best to keep their ships clean and sanitized at all times, but are prepared to implement increased sanitation protocols in the event of an outbreak.

The crew members are following the guidance of the VSP, including isolating symptomatic passengers and increasing cleaning and disinfection of public spaces, eateries, and high-touch surfaces, such as railings and elevator buttons.

The onboard medical team also aided in collecting stool specimens to confirm the causative agent was indeed norovirus. As much as an outbreak can put a damper on the vacation experience, current guests have been laudatory toward Princess’s proactive response.

“I see staff members cleaning everywhere. They are constantly sanitizing the railings in the stairwells and the piazza stairs. Table wipe downs are thorough and I’ve seen items like salt and pepper shakers and the like being removed after use,” one current guest shared on Reddit.

Multiple guests have also said that their room stewards are taking extra time to more thoroughly clean their cruise cabins, and the effort is paying off.

“I am on Star right now. Captain just announced things are looking better with the “gastrointestinal concerns.” Staff is cleaning like crazy and they changed everyone’s bed linen last night,” another guest added.

The passengers went on to note that crew members have been stationed at the entrances of restaurants to encourage passengers to wash their hands, and added additional hand sanitizer stations around the ship.

They also said that there have been ship-wide announcements keeping passengers informed of the situation and advising them on what to do if they experience symptoms.

Next Embarkation Slightly Delayed

When the 177,800-gross ton ship arrives in Fort Lauderdale on March 14, there will be a slight delay before passengers can embark for the next 14-night Caribbean sailing.

“I am supposed to board the Star in FLL on March 14 and I just got an email that there seems to be an outbreak of Gastrointestinal issues on board. They are delaying boarding in FLL to do a deep clean,” a soon-to-be guest also shared on Reddit.

It’s not uncommon for cruise ships to delay boarding to do a deep clean of the cruise terminal and the ship with fewer passengers around.

For example, Cruise Hive reported that this same protocol was followed for Crown Princess, Coral Princess, and Sky Princess following gastrointestinal outbreaks in 2025.

The extra cleaning is not something that future guests should be concerned about, but rather one more step that crew members can take to ensure that the outbreak will not continue on the next sailing.

Tense Standoff as Carnival Adventure Denies Access to Inspectors

Carnival crew members were caught on camera denying entry to Australian government and union officials, and the tense confrontation is going viral.

On March 9, 2026, officials from SafeWork NSW and the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) attempted to board Carnival Adventure in Sydney, Australia, which is where the 2,636-guest ship is currently homeporting.

For context, the MUA is a division of the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), which represents more than 100,000 members across Australia.

According to local outlet Sky News, the organization was attempting to carry out an investigation after receiving multiple reports of “seafarer health and safety issues.”

The reports claim that crew members are subjected to overcrowded living conditions below deck with no safe drinking water and earn extremely low wages, allegedly making as little as $2.50 USD per hour.

However, Carnival did not let the representatives onboard, with members of the security team and several senior crew members stopping them in their tracks.

“That’s my badge, I’m a government official,” a SafeWork employee tried to explain in the video, which has been obtained by Cruise Hive.

“So, you’re refusing the government official’s access,” the man behind the camera then said.

“Do you guys understand? You’ve been formally advised that you won’t be attending the ship today so I respectfully ask you to leave…you won’t be entering the ship today,” a senior officer replied.

Is Carnival Hiding Something?

There are always two sides to every story, and on the MUA’s side, suspicion against Carnival is growing.

MUA and SafeWork NSW allege that they have now been wrongfully refused entry to Carnival ships on three separate occasions.

“I don’t know what this company has got to hide but they set their entire squad of thugs down to refuse the state government inspectors from getting on board,” Union Member Shane Reside said in the video.

The officials say that they have the proper permits to conduct an inspection and will continue to fight for access.

“We have a right to come on board to speak to our members that work on these vessels,” an MUA official affirmed.

Notably, updated legislation in New South Wales now allows worker safety organizations, including the MUA, to launch proceedings in the court against companies that refuse entry to authorized inspectors.

If Carnival is found to be in the wrong, they could be on the hook for a maximum of $74,849 per incident.

Carnival Pushes Back Against Allegations

Carnival Cruise Line, meanwhile, stated to local outlets that they wouldn’t be “threatened” by the union and that only the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) had permission to board their ships.

“We won’t be threatened by the CFMEU. They have no authority to board our ship, bully our crew or violate security protocols that create risks for our guests,” a Carnival spokesperson said.

“The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is the proper regulator for protecting seafarers’ working and living conditions, and they are always welcome onboard,” the cruise line continued.

Carnival also alleges that the brand was told that the union representatives would be meeting the ship at the port to discuss conflict resolution and there was no prior mention of inspecting the ship.

“SafeWork NSW had written to us on Sunday saying they [would] not be seeking to board the ship, which had been communicated to our crew. We were certainly surprised by SafeWork’s about-face and the pressure applied to our crew,” Carnival added.

Interestingly, the reports about the 108,865 gross-ton vessel have surfaced after whistleblowers sounded the alarm about unsafe and poor living conditions onboard Carnival Encounter, which is also based in Australia.

Ultimately, an inspection by the AMSA, which Carnival happily accommodated, was not able to substantiate the claims.
