New cruise ship from British cruise line Saga Cruises has floated out of the construction hall at the Meyer Werft shipyard for the very first time.

Spirit of Discovery Floats Out

Spirit of Discovery which is the first new build vessel for British based Saga Cruises has floated out of its construction hall for the very first time. The major construction milestone took place at the popular Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

The shipyard has released some new photos before during and after the technical process of the vessel hitting the water for the first time. The floating commenced earlier than expected in the early hours of Sunday morning to stay ahead of any bad weather.

Once Spirit of Discovery was floated out of the hall it was transferred to the outfitting pier for further interior work. The first crew members will also soon begin to arrive and the ship will depart Meyer Werft for its River Ems conveyance at the end of May ending at Emden. Still to come will also be sea trials and then finally delivery to the British cruise line.

The new ship is 58,250 gross tons and has a guest capacity of 999 along with 517 crew members. Measuring 236 meters long the ship offers a cruise experience for those of 50 years old. A second identical ship named Spirit of Adventure which is currently under construction will arrive in summer 2020.

The ship will debut from Dover, England on July 10 and in October will reposition to Southampton for the 2019-2020 winter season.
