How to Make Your Cabin Feel That Little Closer to Home

Like any hotel room on Earth, a cruise cabin can also be lacking that character every now and again. We’ve all craved our own bed and home comforts, but there’s not much you can do when you’re basking in the sun in the heart of the Caribbean.

Or is there?

People use a variety of tactics to create a home away from home when cruising, transforming their cabin into a place that’s genuinely comfortable to stay in. So, how do you do it?

Perhaps unsurprisingly you need to consider what you find comfortable at home and be able to replicate that no matter where you are in the world…

Bring Entertainment

Entertainment is a major part in that. Television is a part of our routine, with many of us watching our favourite series before bed, and the same news channels when waking up.

That’s not always possible while away on a cruise however. Geoblocks can prevent you from watching certain shows on Netflix, while some channels only let you view exclusively in one country.

The way around this is with a VPN downloaded to a device. If you’re travelling with an iPad, laptop or even smartphone, you can download a VPN and access all the shows you do back home.

That’s because a VPN can connect you to a server in a different part of the world. It’s a method of how to watch Netflix from other countries used by many and works a charm whether in a hotel room or connected to a cruiseliner’s Wi-Fi in the middle of the ocean.

Bring Your Own Toiletries

Relying on toiletries being provided is often quite a safe bet, and in many cases onboard, you might be handed the life of luxury when it comes to the brands provided.

For many people though using the same shampoo, shower gel or conditioner is part of a routine and the familiarity of the smells, smoothness and feel can be an integral part of a morning.

If this is you, stocking up on your usual products and taking them away with you will ensure you get off to the best possible start each and every day.

Pack a Pair of Slippers

Following a similar idea, packing your slippers is also a great idea, particularly for walking around the room or heading to breakfast in the morning.

Again, they offer a sense of familiarity and comfort that is otherwise compromised with a pair of flannel slippers, if you’re lucky.

If you like wandering around your cabin and relaxing on your balcony, a pair of slippers are ideal.

Take Your Tea Bags

Similarly to your own toiletries, your regular strain of tea or coffee in the morning can also set the day up right.

Many people take their own tea away with them, and that’s for the reason that it genuinely helps.

Cabin room teabags and coffee can often be a little drab, so a proper cup, that you’re used to can be a real perk.

As well as tea and coffee, packing your favourite snacks are also a good way of adding a little familiarity, particularly for those of us who are fussy eaters.

Use An Air Purifier

Unfortunately, many of us can fall into some bad luck with rooms and cabins that aren’t particularly smelling of roses.

For the most part, we just open the window and hope that it leaves. However, packing a miniature air purifier can make a significant difference and make your stay ten times better.

There are a number of travel air purifiers on the market, and use top of the range technology to create healthier air, blasting away the likes of mould, smoke and dust.

Add Some Home Comforts

Most people like to take a few home comforts when travelling and there are a number of ways you can make your cabin a little more welcoming on your cruise.

We’ve of course already mentioned slippers and tea bags, but pictures of the family, blankets and even candles can also add that extra layer of comfort to people.

If you’re the sort of person who doesn’t like to spend too long away from home, this can be a particularly useful way of sprucing up your cabin if you’re on a longer cruise.

Unpack!

Far too many of us are guilty of not unpacking our suitcases when travelling. Cabin rooms will always have plenty of space to hang things up, so use it.

Living out of a suitcase isn’t going to make you settled, as convenient as it may feel, while you’ll also be able to air out any wrinkles once hung up in a wardrobe.

It should be one of the first things you do upon arrival as it’ll get your routine back and also maximise the space you have within your room.
