Construction Begins On New “Celebrity Edge” Cruise Ship

Construction has officially started on Celebrity Cruises all new Edge Class cruise ship. The piece of steel was cut at the STX France shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France which is the first major milestone in the long build process. A traditional ceremony was held at the STX France shipyard where the first steel part was cut. The piece is just one of many which will make up the blocks as the large vessel begins to come together.

Richard D. Fain, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd, said:

“Edge Class is destined to be a trailblazer in modern luxury travel.”  “The new ships will be on the cutting edge of innovation and the leading edge of design, so the ship names are spot on and offer a sense of how Celebrity Cruises is looking into the future.”

Celebrity Cruises also announced that the ship’s name will be Celebrity Edge. The ship has been known as the Edge Class during the concept phase and now that name will continue as the first in its class. once completed the ship will be 117,000 gross tons and carry around 2,900 guests. The cruise line is yet to reveal the ship’s design, we can expect further details in 2017.

Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, Celebrity’s President and CEO, said:

“We set the bar high for the architects and designers on Edge class, and we were rewarded with a stunning design. Cutting the ship’s first piece of steel is the traditional first step in the shipbuilding process, and I’m excited to see our dreams turn into reality over the next 24 months.”

“We are excited to reveal more details soon, and travelers, trade partners and enthusiasts alike will not be disappointed — this ship is going to be amazing.”

The cruise line also revealed Celebrity Beyond as the sister ship of Celebrity Edge. The second ship in the class will be identical and help expand Celebrity Cruises even further. Celebrity Edge will be delivered in fall 2018 and the Celebrity Beyond in 2020. Another two ships in the same class will be delivered in 2021 and 2022.
