What Goes on During Setup?
Setting up a new Carnival cruise ship is not as easy as it looks. The majority of the crew begins arriving at the shipyard to join the ship around 2-weeks before delivery so there is a limited amount of time to get everything ready for the maiden voyage. In fact, many departments need to be fully set up before the legendary Micky Arison and Carnival president arrive so that it all can be looking shiny and nice for photos and more.
Each department is different but there will usually be a lot to do. if we look at the gift shops just think of all that merchandise and stock that needs to be displayed and unpacked. For the Carnival Horizon, over 100 pallets were sent to the ship including all those logo items, jewelry, watches, cosmetics, perfume and a lot more. The spent most of the days pushing trolleys to lockers, carrying boxes from the pallets to the shops and making the displays stunning ready for the first cruise. You can actually read more about the Carnival Horizon gift shops and the company which maintains them.
In addition to the crews regular working duties there is also the safety aspect. As soon as a crew member arrives on the ship they are giving a safety briefing along with very important training which is ongoing in the first few weeks. Boat drills and muster station drills are essential and if it’s a new class vessel this is more important than ever due to new locations and routes. Crew members will often do several drills before official service begins.
It isn’t all hard work though as a setup and inaugural team is special where crew membrs bond well on this historic moment of bringing out a brand new shiny Carnival cruise ship! Crew parties will be put on and there is even some free time to head on into town away from the shipyard for some normality. It is hard but worth it for the experience and satisfaction of working on the latest great ship in the fleet. Nothing beats that new cruise ship smell!
For Carnival Horizon the ship has already departed the Monfalcone shipyard in Italy and heading towards Barcelona Spain for the maiden voyage on April 2. The ship is 133,500 gross tons with a passenger capacity of over 3,900. Discover more about the ship here.
