Carnival Cruise Line is going to increase gratuities from December 1, 2018, for all sailings. Now it’s time to see what other cruise lines will do especially sister lines.
Carnival Hikes Gratuities
The Miami-based cruise line is hiking gratuities which will go into effect from December 1, 2018. For guests in traditional staterooms, the rate per day is increasing from $12.95 to $13.99 per person. For those booked in suites, the rate will go up from $13.95 to $15.99 per person.
For all sailings departing prior to December 1, 2018
- Standard Staterooms: $12.95Â USDÂ per person, per day
- Suite Staterooms: $13.95Â USDÂ per person, per day
For all sailings departing on or after December 1, 2018
- Standard Staterooms: $13.99 USDÂ per person, per day
- Suite Staterooms: $15.99 USDÂ per person, per day
The new rates won’t apply to those who have already paid their gratuities online or through their travel agent. It’s also important to note that for those on upcoming cruises after December 1 can still pay the current rate by also paying online or through a travel agent.
The increase in gratuities is to help the hard-working crew members. The amount per day is shared between them including the stateroom stewards and the dining room staff. Crew members working in departments like the gift shops, casino and spa are not included as they are paid separately.

As always when it comes to cruise line gratuities the amount can be adjusted at the guest service desk after they have been charged on their Sail & Sign account at the end of the voyage.
However, some guests who feel that the hard-working crew members don’t deserve this much-needed money are often seen on the last day of the voyage lowering the amount they have to pay. It is best to follow the suggested amount and some cruisers go as far as leaving an envelope of money for their amazing room steward and waiter.
